The survey results show that the target audience for the magazine is primarily male, aged 16-24, who enjoy rock and indie music genres. They spend around 6 hours online per day and prefer listening to music through electronic devices. In designing the magazine, the author will aim it at this demographic by featuring rock and indie artists and providing extra online content like downloads and games. The magazine also needs to appeal more than existing publications as only 25% of respondents currently read magazines.
2. The Method
• To collect the data that follows in the upcoming slides I created an
online survey through a website called Survey Monkey which allowed
me to create questions in a survey structure and then the site gave
me a unique website URL to send to people who would then be
directed to a page where they could complete my survey. To make
sure that the results that I gained were from my target audience I sent
the link to people I knew who were part of that target audience
through various social media forms, online forums and e-mails. This
then gave me the results that I received from the members of my
chosen audience.
3. Target Audience: Gender
What this question tells me is that the
majority of my audience are male.
This means that when designing my
magazine I will have to take this into
account and try and make the
magazine more suited to a male
audience by for example making it
very one topic heavy as this is usually
what males will buy into. However,
there is a female audience for my
target audience and so I will have to
try and attract both genders when
designing the magazine.
4. What these responses tell me
about my target audience is
that they are almost entirely
made up of the 16-24 age
bracket. This means that when
designing the magazine I will
have to design it to be aimed at
this age bracket otherwise I will
not get any sales. To try and
attract this age group I should
try and feature things that they
are currently interested in or try
and appeal to their age
specifically through mode of
address.
Target Audience: Age
5. Target Audience: Genres
With this question a lot of variation appears in
the types of music the respondents like and
this because multiple choice was allowed and
as the results show, 11 participants out of 16
like Indie and Rock music as well as other
types. This shows that the majority of the
target audience I have chosen like the music
genres that I have chosen to feature within
my magazine as it will be focused on Rock
and Indie music. This tells me that I definitely
need to feature Rock and Indie artists within
my magazine but it also tells me that within
my target audience R’n’B and Dubstep are
also popular genres and so to feature them
would not be a bad thing.
6. Target Audience: Music
Listening Preferences
In this question respondents were asked to rank from 1-6
the different ways they preferred to listen to music. This
question obtained interesting results as it definitely shows
the generation gap and how age affects preference. The
option that was placed at rank 1 the most was an electronic
device (phones, iPod etc.). This definitely shows that using a
free downloads system as an incentive to buy the magazine
would be a fairly successful marketing device as this seems
to be what they like the most. Downloading and YouTube
were the other highest ranking answers and so this
reinforces the idea that free downloads would work well as
an incentive. Live performances also did fairly well so
competitions to see gigs or performances could also work.
7. Target Audience:
Online Activity
This question also tells us a lot about the
difference between generations of people
as the most frequent answer to this
question was that respondents tended to
spend around 6 hours online every day.
This proves to us that an online presence
is a must have and a website for the
magazine and various social media forms
should all be accessible to the readers. If
online activity is taking up 25% of every
day of their lives then it is obvious that an
online presence with various features like
extra information, games and free
downloads is a must have.
8. Target Audience: Music Artists
This question received a huge variety of different answers with some people listing lots of
artists and others listing only one or two. To name a few of the more frequent artists we
had Foo Fighters, Enter Shikari, Linkin Park, YouTube Artists and many, many more. This
shows that there is great variety in preferred artists but judging from the previous question
most of them prefer rock or indie music and so featuring artists of those genres that were
mentioned in the respondents answers would be a smart move. A few Dubstep and R’n’B
artists also seemed to have a large presence in the responses received and so it may also
be viable to briefly feature some of these artists in the magazine as they seem to be quite
popular genres amongst my target audience. However, Rock and Indie should still be the
focus as focusing on too many artists may make the readers confused as to what the
magazine is actually about and it would also be difficult to conform to stereotypes of
multiple genres.
9. Various Audience Response Information
• Out of all of the participants only 25% of them currently read any magazines which tells us that to
attract their attention the magazine would need to be colourful and appeal to their personal
tastes and be different to what is currently out there as this is obviously not successful.
• There was great variation in the responses when asking for a role model but the frequent answers
appear to be musicians or artists, family members, powerful or rich people in society (Churchill,
Bill Gates etc.) and general celebrities. This tells us that in general the target audience would like
to be famous, powerful and rich so to feature people of this status would work well as a selling
point.
• When asked what their dream job would be the answers were again very varied but most of the
jobs specified were either very highly paid, celebrity status jobs or jobs in the music industry so
this reinforces my earlier point about featuring idols.
• When asked about favourite animals many different responses were given but the only real trend
was that male respondents would usually state a predator and female respondents would state a
more vulnerable or cute animal. This just tells us that the target audience conforms to the
stereotypical roles of men and women as the men like to feel powerful and so associate
themselves with predators
