How did you attract/address your
audience?
QUESTION 5
We established early into production that our film would be aimed at a more
mature audience, mostly male, and that our film would be rated 15. Our film
will appeal to the film-noir audience with its use of typical noir aspects such
as a 1950’s setting, murder and specific camera work that apply to the
conventions of film noir such as silhouetted shots and close ups. Also, while
audiences within the teenage range may not fully appreciate our movie, our
rating is purely to show that our movie would not include any major graphic
violence or gore, and can still be viewed and enjoyed by anyone of any age.
When watching, the audience is asked to put
themselves in the point of view of the protagonist
(Nicholas Mangrum), a detective looking for revenge
over his friend. We use this as a way to make the
audience react to different situations that the
protagonist is put into, and to hopefully to make them
feel attached to him and what he does. For
instance, during the interrogation scene we showed a
point of view shot of the Associate while the sack
was over his head, to try and portray to the viewer
how claustrophobic the situation would have been. As
well as this we use a range of different camera shots
such as high/low angles, extreme close ups and eye
line matches, as they relate to the conventions of the
noir genre, Such as an extreme close up of Nicholas
holding the drill bit, in order to show the viewer what
was about to happen. By using the results from our
audience research, we managed to incorporate the
above points into our movie, appealing to what our
audience said they would best like to see.
We also included many conventions that have been
generalized in the noir genre, such as silhouettes and the
use of a black and white filter, which can be seen
throughout the entirety of our sequence, as the whole of
it is set in black & white. We also included different
suspense techniques such as a dramatic musical score and
twists in the plot, which are also typical in the noir genre,
for instance during the interrogation scene of our
sequence Nicholas ends up killing the associate as he will
not cooperate, when he was only meant to interrogate
him. Furthermore we created a questionnaire and asked
our general audience to fill it in, and used the feedback to
help structure the plot of our film. We used the results to
help decide on certain aspects of our plot such as our
location, certain scenes, characters and music. Again, we
incorporated the results of our audience research into our
movie, using what aspects they think would make an
intriguing storyline and what music they think would fit
best within the movie.
BELOW IS THE FEEDBACK WE RECEIVED FROM OUR AUDIENCE, WHICH WE THEN
INCORPORATED INTO OUR SEQUENCE:
