Advert analysis 1 - daft punk 'lose yourself to dance'
1. Advert Analysis – Daft Punk ‘Lose Yourself To Dance’
The first advert analysis I have
chosen to do is for the single ‘Lose
Yourself To Dance’ for the album
‘Random Access Memories’
released by Daft Punk on the 13th
August 2013. While their genre
(French-house) does not match the
genres that I am studying, but is
instead a combination of house
music and synthpop, the latter that
I am focusing on.
The poster mainly takes a form
reminiscent to a 70’s-80’s movie
poster, such as Star Wars or
Indiana Jones, showing portraits of
both members of Daft Punk, Guy-
Manand Thomas Bangalter, as well
as Pharrell Williams who is
featured in the song above a
cheering crowd illuminated in
orange. The black background
combined with the groups metallic
shiny clothing makes it seem like
they are radiating light. The title of
the song is located beneath the
image as not to obstruct the art, as
well as making the orange text
stand out more vividly on the black
background. The whole style of the poster links to the album and how it
pays tribute to the late 70’s and early 80’s era of music. As usual the Daft
Punk duo don their android-like suits that represent their ties to the
electro and synth genre of music that they focus on, while the display of
the shown instruments (guitar, bass, keyboard and synthesizer) shows off
the funk genre that the album pays tribute to. The display of what seems to
be a UFO beaming down above the group seems to be an indicator to the
in-joke that Daft Punk are not actually human, but instead are androids.
The main target audience for this album seems to be fans of the funk/disco
genre, and tries to create a nostalgic factor with its music, while still
appealing to Daft Punk’s usual core demograph.
