Question 5
If we had film posters they would be seem in London because it’s the capital, so there would be a mixture of people including our target audience who will see the advertisement, so therefore watch the film. If we use this form of advertising we would be able to interest more people than just our target audience. We would advertise at universities because most of their students are in our target audience. They would constantly see the adds around school and so would their friends. They are all more likely to persuade each other to watch it. We would advertise in the universities newspapers/magazines and put posters around school. It would also be a good idea to advertise at the cinema, while a film of the same genre is being shown. This is because once they’ve seen the other film they would want to see our film as well because they would be similar to some extent.
-5778541287700039147752349500We used the text we used because it looked gothic and eerie. The text was also linked to the name of the film, which was ‘fragmental’ because the size of the ‘f’ and ‘m’ in fragmental was bigger than the rest of the letters, which were in capitals. The text itself looked fragmented because it was abnormal. The colours of the word are red and white. The bit in white spells out ‘frag’ and the red bit spells out ‘mental’. The colours makes the fact that we stuck two words together visible to the audience. White symbolises innocence and purity, while red represents danger, fear and evil. The colours chosen link to our film because at the beginning the main character is innocent and good, but by the end of the film she becomes dangerous and evil to some extent; the fact that the white comes before the red shows the characters transformation in the film clearly because the character goes from good to bad. We chose red for our film because that’s what the audience would be expecting due to the fact that our chosen genre involves a lot of fighting, action, danger and blood. E.g. The Adulthood poster includes some of the main characters wearing at least a bit of red in their costumes; also the word “law” in the film Outlaw is also red on the poster. The credits were positioned on the top /bottom and right/ let corner of the frame and they only appeared for a few seconds before they disappeared. They have been positioned like this to keep the audiences main focus on the images rather than the text. This task was quite hard because the text was red, while the shots were in black and white, so your eye movement would naturally be drawn to the red. E.g. In the film Outlaw when they used the same technique the background was pitch black, so the only thing to concentrate on was the credits, so it was easier to use the colour code. We finally came to the conclusion that the video was much bigger than the text and that the character was constantly moving, so the audience would focus on the video more. This theory was proven when we asked a sample of our target audience to give us feedback on many occasions.
The main character is wearing leggings, a hoodie and a pair of trainers as part of her costume. We chose this costume because it is quite ordinary and easy for the audience to relate to, so our opening sequence seems more realistic. We also chose this costume because it’s what the audience would suspect because many other movies like our have used a similar costume. E.g. the main character in Kiidulthood is wearing a hoodie and trainers, the youths in Outlaw are wearing hoodies, trainers and jogging bottoms; it’s the same story with the films Green Street and Harry Brown. The costume we chose helped us out a lot due to the fact that the location in which we were shooting in was too nice to be a house from somewhere that was deprived. Usually in films like ours the characters live in flats and they go to academically poor schools. The costume made the audience focus more on the costume 417195045656500and forget about the surrounding area.
We made the whole of our opening sequence black and white because we wanted to show the audience how the main character was feeling, which was depressed and we thought this was a good way to show it. It also helped us to create that sad, depressed atmosphere, which is very typical for this genre as shown in the films Adulthood and Kidulthood. The colours also allowed the audience to focus on the movement and facial expressions more because in our case the images were telling the story more than the sound, so the audience were able to concentrate more.
The facial expression of our main character was always gloomy and sad, which is what we wanted, however you only saw the whole of her face properly at the very end. The main characters identity being hidden until later on in the opening sequence is sometimes expected from the audience because it is done quite often like in Kidulthood. The main characters movement is quite shaky, which is expected due to the type of character she is.
The main characters hair and make-up is natural because she isn’t wearing any make-up and she has mourning hair. This is expected seeming as characters in other films like ours have had natural make-up on because there was no need to look glamorous due to the storyline. We thought that in our case using make-up wasn’t necessary at all.
We used non-diegetic sound for the background music to make our opening sequence more entertaining seeming as there was no dialogue. The type of music we chose is in the hip-hop/R&B category, which is quite gritty and urban. This is the type of music that is expected from our target audience because it is most likely the type of music that they listen to. This is shown in media texts like Stomp the yard, misfits and Step-up2.
It also suits the genre of our film because the costume our main character is wearing is also linked to the type of music we used because many of the type of artists our target audience listen to wear these clothes. We also used diegetic noise for the some of the movements the main character makes e.g. when she’s shutting the door we hear a creaking noise. This has just been done to at some realism to the opening sequence. The sound effect we used near the end was the sound of glass shattering. This was used to show the audience how the main characters life is shattering to pieces like glass.
The most popular camera movement was panning because we wanted to establish the setting and tell parts of the characters story within two minutes. This is expected because the audience are now aware of the fact that only a little bit of information is revealed in the opening sequence.
