3) WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED FROM
YOUR AUDIENCE FEEDBACK?
By Hayley Hall
How did you respond to the original
brief with the audience in mind?
In the planning stages we undertook a video questionnaire, this involved us asking a range of
different people, including different ages and different genders. We then asked them a range of
questions based on the storyline. Through doing this it gave us ideas of what people expected
from our film e.g; locations and music. From finding this information we were able to adapt what
the audience wanted from a romantic comedy film into our own film. This research also allowed
us to decide on what genre people expected our film to be and also the film certificate.
From conducting this research it allowed us to see whether people understood the storyline and
whether they would watch our film. The feedback which we got back was positive and everyone
understood the storyline and the majority would watch the film in cinemas. The locations which
people recommended we took into consideration and used a few of them in our film if we thought
they matched the scene.
Our Video Questionnaire
Below is the Video Questionnaire which we undertook in the planning stage:
In filming and editing how did you ensure the meaning
would be apparent to the audience?
In the filming and editing stage we made sure that the meaning of the film would be apparent to
the audience by using realistic locations of where people may see each other, for example in a
corridor at college. In the film when Harry wrote the note to Emily we showed the audience the
poem which many people have heard, therefore the audience were able to see what Harry’s
feelings for Emily were. Also, in the pizza scene, where Harry writes on the pizza box asking
Emily to be his girlfriend, this showed the audience what Harry’s intentions were. In the film we
also used many close ups to show the characters facial expressions, especially Harry when he
was faced with many complications in his journey to get Emily to be his girlfriend.
What creative decisions did you make in planning, rehearsing, filming and editing
that were influenced by your sense of the audience and how they might interpret
your finished film?
In the planning and filming stages the audience said that they would like to see some of the locations being a park
or a dog home. Therefore we adapted these ideas into our film and used a park for the scene where Harry eats
the pizza and also a dog home when Harry is faced with the complication of Emily’s friend giving him the wrong
number. Therefore the fact that we have used ideas which the audience gave us will appeal to them as there
ideas have had an impact on our film.
In the editing stages, we showed a number of people a rough cut of the film. This was before the film had been
fully finished and we just wanted to get an idea of what the audience felt about our film. One of the main things
which the audience pointed out was that the film needed more music adding to the film as some scenes had no
dialogue and therefore their was no sound. Having received these improvements we then added more music to
the film and showed a different audience the finished film and they felt that the right amount of music was being
used and the only improvement was that the dialogue of the characters needed turning up.

Question 1
Teenagers Everyone
Audience Feedback from our rough cut.
Questions 10, 11 and 12 all received all Yes answers.
How did the audience respond when you trialled aspects
of your film?
We posted a rough cut of the film on YouTube and got the audience to answer
questions based on the film. On the previous slide is graphs of the results from
each of the questions which we asked. The majority of the people asked said that
the target audience for the film is teenagers and one individual answering
everyone. Our target audience for our film was people aged 12-35 therefore this
matched what the audience thought. The audience felt that the film was funny, this
matched the comedic side of the film and showed that as well as Romance the film
was also funny and had comedic aspects. The majority of people felt that more
music needed adding and some felt that the film was fuzzy, we feel that this is only
because of the quality on YouTube and when played on a big scene, like we did in
the final film screening people didn’t find the quality to be an issue.
How did the audience respond when you
trialled aspects of your film?
The majority of people who answered the questionnaire felt that the music was suitable however
one individual felt that the music could be more dramatic. We feel that if the music was any more
dramatic it would take away the fact that the film is meant to be a happy and fun film and would
make the film more of a drama. The majority felt that the film was a PG film certificate which was
what the film is however a number did feel that the film was a 12, we feel that this is because these
individuals don’t know the content of what is allowed in a PG and also associate PG films to be
linked with children, however our film is a PG as the content of the film meets the PG guidelines.
The majority of people who watched our film felt that the genre of the film was Romantic Comedy
which is what the genre of the film is however some people felt that the genre of the film was
Romance or Drama. The audience felt that the locations which we used matched the film. This
could be due to the initial research we conducted and then used in our film.
How did the audience respond to the final
film?
The audiences response to the final film was positive, the audience felt that the only improvement
which needed making was the dialogue in the film needed to be louder as the background music
was too loud in some scenes. The audience felt that the storyline was good and easy to follow
and understand with some good comedic aspects to the film. The audience also liked the
continuity used in the title sequence as each character enters the house. The audience also
mentioned the good range of different shots which were used.
