QUESTION 3 - WHAT KIND OF MEDIA
INSTITUTION MIGHT DISTRIBUTE YOUR MEDIA
PRODUCT AND WHY?
Rebecca Fry
LIONSGATE
“Lionsgate is a leading global entertainment company with a strong and diversified presence in motion picture
production and distribution, television programming and syndication, home entertainment, family entertainment,
digital distribution, new channel platforms and international distribution and sales.”
https://www.lionsgate.com/corporate/company/
I took this summary from the Lionsgate website, as it shows the successful nature of this distribution – this is one of the
main reasons I chose Lionsgate.
“Lionsgate Entertainment finished 2012 in fifth place among the studios’ market share, claiming 11.6% of the domestic
box office.”

This figure shows Lionsgate’s success within the film industry as it’s share of the
market and box office success is growing.
REASONS FOR MY CHOICE OF LIONSGATE
 They distribute films of a range of different genres; this means I am not taking a risk of
releasing a film of a genre which fills a gap in their product portfolio which may be
unsuccessful.
 Lionsgate have had huge success by distributing many successful franchises such as ‘Saw’,
‘The Hunger Games’ and ‘Twilight’.All of these films have a similar target audience to
mine so my film may attract the loyal fans of Lionsgate who enjoy these films.
 Lionsgate are not an independent film company and therefore have built themselves a
good reputation due to the huge awareness of their company.
 They also have lots of experience in distributing films and there will to give advice when
choosing the release date and how to market the film.
 The huge finance available could help with promotion and marketing of new releases, as
Lionsgate have distributed many successful films they will know how to market films
successfully and specifically.
LIONSGATE FILMS
Through research I found that Lionsgate have
distributed films of every genre; for example
comedy – ‘What to ExpectWhenYou’re
Expecting’, drama – ‘Abduction’, romantic
comedy – ‘Good Luck Chuck’, adventure – ‘The
Hunger Games’, action – ‘The Spy Next Door’,
and also horror – ‘Texas Chainsaw’.This
diversified range of genres shows that Lionsgate
shows that the distributor has a huge target
audience. Therefore if they were to distribute my
media product, the horror genre and storyline
would fit with the many other films they have
distributed.
If Lionsgate did not distribute films with the horror genre there would be a gap in their product
portfolio. I did not want to chose a distributor with this gap as I feel that this would be risky as
the success of a horror film may not be ensured. For example, if Lionsgate was predominantly
well known for comedy films and I released a horror film the Lionsgate audience may not enjoy
the film.
WHY IS MY PRODUCT SUITABLE FOR LIONSGATE?
 When deciding which company I wanted to distribute my film I tried to chose one which distributed films similar to the one I
was creating. I found that Lionsgate had a similar target audiences to my media product for many of their films – young
adults with an interest in thrill/action and adventure. This includes three of their most popular franchises: The Hunger
Games, Twilight and Saw. By matching the target audience of these successful franchises I hope to attract a similar
audience to watch my film.
 Lionsgate has produced many successful horror films, including: (figures correct on box office mojo)
- ‘The Cabin InTheWoods’ - $66,486,080 worldwide box office
- Texas chainsaw (3D) - $47,241,945 worldwide box office
- The Possession - $85,446,075 worldwide box office
- Sinister $77,712,439 worldwide box office
 These figures demonstrate the success Lionsgate has had with distributing horror films of a similar nature to my film.
Therefore my film will match the genre of their existing media products and has the potential to attract these audiences as
they will know from the reputation of Lionsgate that it could be of interest to them.
EXAMPLES FROM MY MEDIA PRODUCT
I used the Lionsgate film opening in my media product. These screenshots of my film opening show how the first
title was of my film company ‘FryFilms’.This faded into the Lionsgate title and then faded again to show the title
of my film – ‘Hunted’. By using the Lionsgate title at the beginning of the film, the audience will imminently
recognise that this film has been distributed by an extremely profitable business which has success in many
genres and also distributed many big franchises - ‘The Hunger Games’ and ‘Saw’.Therefore the audience is likely
to want to continue to watch this due to the professional nature and success of the distributor.
