Pre-Production - Actors, Costumes and Props
Actors
I have chosen Matt Holley to play the villain in my film who
chases the girl and drags her away carrying a knife. This is
because he is tall and has facial hair, which in my opinion
makes him look older than many other people of a similar
age. Therefore his tall build helps to portray him as a strong
and dangerous character to the audience, which helps to
raise fear within the film. He also does not have a shy
personality, which will help him to act the role of the
character effectively and show certain emotions where
appropriate, for example anger. This will help to create fear
of this character amongst the audience as he is a tall, dark
character and by showing anger within his personality they
will know that the Abbie is in trouble when in his presence.
To play the female role I have chosen Abbie Sutton. This is
because she does not look older than her age like Matt does,
which could show the contrast in characters. This will highlight
that he is playing the older character who is more likely to be
in control, and therefore portrays Abbie as weak and
vulnerable. Additionally, she enjoys acting which means that
she should also be able to play the role of a scared, confused
and hurt character effectively. Hopefully, this will lead to her
showing convincing emotions and expressions which show
fear, reinforcing the horror nature of the film. By showing
clear facial expressions the audience may be able to
sympathize with the character as they feel sorry for her and
are scared for her future and what the villain will do.
Costumes
Throughout the scenes where Matt chases Abbie
through the forest I have chosen the costume of
black jeans and a black hooded top. The dark
colours help to blend him in with the forest
which will make it hard for Abbie to spot him as
he will not stand out amongst the trees. Black is
also a colour associated with danger/death
amongst horror film. I have also chosen a
hooded top as this will hide a lot of his face,
which means the audience are unable to 'get to
know' the character as they cannot see his
expressions and emotions, which helps to create
fear of the villain. Additionally, I think that this
costume fits the stereotype of young troublemakers who are avoiding getting punishments for
their actions. However, during the scene of where Matt and Abbie are arguing, Matt will wear
pain black jeans and a white t-shirt. This is because these are very casual clothes which suggests
he is just a 'normal' character who has no alternative motive, therefore his later identity is not
revealed. Additionally, the change of costume could suggest that Matt planned to attack Abbie
and it was not just a spontaneous decision. This is because he changes into a more discreet
costume which hides his identity.
The costume I have chosen for Abbie when she
wakes up in the forest is blue ripped jeans and
a leather jacket. The jeans will suggest that she
has been viciously attacked which caused the
rips. Therefore insinuating that there has
already been violence/horror which will be
explained later in the film. This will help to
create a sense of fear as the audience will be
unsure what caused the rips and may be
anxious about what caused them. I have
chosen the leather jacket as it is not a very casual piece of clothing. This suggests that the
attack was unexpected as she was just wearing normal clothes, which reinforces the fact that
she is helpless and confused about what is happening when in the forest. She will wear this in
the scenes of the argument as well as it shows it happens in the same day and something which
happened in the two hour time gap has triggered the later events.
Props
One of my props will be a very sharp knife which I will
film an extreme close up of at the end of the scenes in
the forest. This will be as the villain drags the girl away
to foreshadow later events, for example he will kill her.
Therefore adding a sinister tone to the filmand
matching the genre of horror.
I will also use a car as the vehicle Abbie uses to get
away from the argument and also the location
where she will be angry and confused about what
to do. As she is in a car it makes it quick and easy
for her to make bad decisions, for example telling
Matts girlfriend the truth. It is also much more
effective than Abbie leaving on foot as is more
difficult for Matt to run after her.
