Question 3:
What kind of media institution might
distribute your media product and why?
What is a media institution?
A media institution is the companies that produce and distribute the magazines.
Many companies publish and distribute music magazines.
Publish: write it, design it and create it with your audience in mind.
Distribute: print it, get it delivered to the retailers and sell it.
Existing publishing companies and
distributors
Rhinegold Publishing
Rhinegold publishing is an independent publisher of music magazines, music yearbooks and education
resources, founded in 1977. Some of the examples of their magazines are Choir and Organ, Classical Music
Magazine, Early Music Today, International Piano and Opera Now. They publish classical music magazines.

Immediate Media
Immediate Media Company Limited publishes over 34 magazine titles. It was formed on 1 November 2011. It
mainly publishes BBC owned magazines. It publishes BBC Music and Top Of The Pops. Immediate Media Co is
an award-winning special interest content and platform company. They are one of the biggest consumer media
businesses in the UK and one of the largest magazine media publishers.

Bauer Media
Bauer Media Group is a European-based media company, headquartered in Hamburg,
Germany. It managed a portfolio of more than 600 magazines, over 400 digital products
and 50 radio and TV stations around the world. Q is published by this company and so is
Kerrang!. Kerrang! is a brand that specialises in rock music. It originally began as a
magazine and in 2004 Kerrang Radio was launched. A Kerrang TV channel also exists. As of
2005 all of Kerrang TV's programme content is music videos the majority of which is open
scheduled for text requests from their playlist.

Do they publish Mass Audience magazines or
more Niche?
Rhinegold publishing- I think this company publish mass audience magazines. This is because they publish
more than one music magazine, therefore they have a large audience to publish to. Even though they publish
more classical music, there are many people who still like classical, so there is a mass audience to publish to.
Immediate media- again I think that this company publish mass audience magazines. The Top Of The Pops
magazine is bought by many teenage girls, so them alone is a mass audience. Even though their target
audience is young teen girls, some adults may be interested in that magazine as well. They also publish BBC
Music magazine, which is the ‘worlds best selling classical music magazine’. Therefore they publish mass
audience magazines.
Bauer Media- This company publish magazines along the lines of ‘Q’ and ‘Kerrang!’. Therefore this makes this
company publish mass audience magazines. Both of these music magazines are very well known and many
people buy them.
My music magazine- INFINITY
My music magazine’s target audience is mid/late teen girls. I think the publishing company most suitable to
produce my magazine would be Immediate Media Company. This is because they already publish Top Of The
Pops which is a pop magazine which young teens like. When they get to mid/late teens they will want a new
pop magazine to read. This can be INFINITY. Also as they publish a pop magazine already, having another one
will suit the type of genre they produce. I think if you want to publish a classical magazine then have Rhinegold
publishing to produce it and if you want to publish a Rock magazine then have Bauer Media to produce it.
Immediate Media Company produce large mainstream magazines, which will be good for my magazine as it
can become a large well known music magazine for mid/late teenagers. Also there is a space in the market for
my magazine. As there aren’t many magazines that are for mid/late teenagers. For the budget of my magazine I
think it would be a fair amount as it won’t become massive straight away, but within time I think that the
budget would have to increase. I think they could advertise my magazine inside of other massive magazines
they have already published and are sold frequently to many customers. I have priced my magazine at £3.50,
and it could be sold in suitable stores in the magazine section. Also I think there can be a copy which you can
view online.
