What is a distributor
and what does it do?
Question 3
What is a distributor and what does it
do?
 Definition: The distributor is a company or individual
or controls the way in which a film or TV series is
marketed.
 These are also responsible for setting the release date
and the way in which the film or series is marketed to
the public.
 Some distributors may act directly due to owning
certain networks or theatres, whereas others could
be limited and only work with films on DVD or Blu-ray.
Why is distribution important for film
success?
 It is important to choose the correct distribution method to ensure it is
suitable for the audience and that it is in a way in which they will
understand. A lot of people enjoy going to the cinema to experience the
high definition and atmosphere. Meaning that a lot of films are
distributed through theatres to reach this target audience.
 It is important for success because distributors decide how long films are
to be shown on screens, thus to how much money to make during the
cinema runs. So the longer they screen the film for the more money they
will make.
 It is important for independent film because they do not contain the
biggest stars meaning that less people will know about them. By using
distributers they will be able to become well known to people outside
the target market, meaning that more people may want to watch it.
Film Distribution
Film distribution is split into 4
sectors that all market TV series
and films differently.
Some routes have major or
independent channels.
Major: is a distribution process
where there is a direct link to
studios and theatres. Meaning t hat
these films will have a bigger
funding, which will contain various
marketing methods such as TV
advertisement, Billboards,
Magazine article, etc…).
Independent: is a distribution
process where the link is not
directly to studios and theatres.
Meaning that these use a lower
budget and will not have as much
marketing.
Things to consider
 When planning how to market our opening sequence we
had to take into consideration what channel we wanted
and who the audience was so that we could best suit it to
the them.
 Audience/ target market.
 What type of footage it is? (TV Series, Film).
 Is the content suitable for the distribution channel?
 Budgets for the distribution method.
Our distribution channel and why?
 Due to our product only being an opening sequence, we would not be
able to distribute is like that. Meaning that if we did finish the whole
product.
 If we did distribute it then our product would be distributed as a TV
series Meaning that we would capture the attention of our target
audience for long due to it being continued across episodes. Through
distributing by TV this means that the budget would be low due to the
cost of marketing not being as high, unlike films being distributed
through theatres.
 When distributing through TV we would need to pick a channel/s that
our target market use a lot. I would personally choose channel 5
because a lot of films are shown on this channel, and this also means
that other TV Broadband Companies such as SKY and BT will be able to
show our product, helping to promote it more.
How do we shown the distribution
company in our films?  We show this through our
ident, as you can see to
the left we have created
an ident that is more
directed to productions
and not just films. So
that in which our product
is seen as a TV series and
not a film, so that it is
directed for to that
specific type of
marketing, and connects
with the audience more
in that way.
Syndication
 Refers to where films or series
are distributed first of all to
theatres and TV screens, for a
certain amount of time. Then
the film/series may be
transferred to DVD, or other
programmes to expand on the
target market that prefer these
methods.
 By expanding distribution this
will add an advantage and will
get the film/series more
noticed and well-known.
 Our product if completed into a completer series,
we may first of all get other channels interested
into it. Then we may create DVD copies of
seasons, so that the audience can watch episodes
over and other again. If this becomes popular we
then may expand and make box sets of all the
seasons. This will help to increase money made
by the film.
