What Is Distribution?
DistributionWhen creating films there is the production side and the distribution side. Distributors like, 20th Century Pictures and Production companies like Universal Studios and other production companies work together to create a successful film and box office hit.
DistributionDistributors launch and sustain films in the film market. Distribution is a highly competitive market as there are several different films being distributed or need distributing
DistributionA major distributor is a big company that distributes and markets a film to the target audience of the film. They are in charge of the P&A (Print and Advertising) and responsible for makingsure people know about the film and attracting its target audience..
DistributionThese are companies such as Lions Gate Entertainment, MGM-EMI and 20th Century Pictures. These companies market the film on large scales, on television advertisements of the trailers, billboards and many other (expensive) ways
DistributionIndependent distributors tend to be small group of people or a smaller scale company using cheaper ways to advertise and market a film. They will use things such as the internet, posters and word of mouth to attract its target audience. It is usually done in more specific places where will know they will be able to reach its main target audience rather than somewhere like TV where it’s not particularly focussed.
DistributionThey getthe films they release from 1or more of various sources, these are the main sources:A third-party sales agent representing the production company.Constant stream of new film content from a parent studioA single title obtained during anytime of producing the film.
DistributionDistributors first have a look at the actual film and analyse it. They then begin to look at its marketability- who the film is going to appeal to, looking at the demographics and psychographics. With that distributors can then start to think about creating a campaign fit for this audience. They use positioning and think about the genre and what type of person would what the film.
DistributionThey ask themselves questions like…Will it attract a particular age group?
Will the audience be more interested in who is directing the film or the stars of the film?
What do they do?
Where do they go?
