Trailers


A trailer is a tool, specifically designed by the movie company to advertise their film to an
audience, when making a trailer the company needs to know what their audience is, what
they like and what will draw them into wanting to see the film. This consists of a lot of
research to design the trailer in the right way so that it looks and feel professional and
persuades the audience to take an interest in the film, giving them the right amount of
detail that makes them want more from it. The trailer acts like a very vague summary of
the film, that also doesn’t give a clear structure of what happens, and what its about like a
film, instead it throws it at the audience to draw them in and make them wonder what the
film is about.
Trailers are made because they open up the ideas and concepts of the film and try to
market itself towards the audience. They are made because they help to make a good
impression of the film and most importantly inform the audience of the films
existence.
Trailers are often seen on television's at set times, depending on their audience and
when the research indicates that they will be watching at that time. Either that or
trailers are seen in places like DVD’s, Cinema’s and even some Games, often as
optional extras. Trailers tend to be released in the period of 3-2 weeks before the
actual film is released, to allow the audience to see it several times and become more
excited for the movie itself.
Battleship

The film marketing campaign I will be basing my work on will be on the film and marketing
campaign of Battleship.
They use different methods to present the film, and make it look interesting and unique and
clever.

The first approach they made was the work on the posters, which advertise who is in the
film, who directed it and how important they are through the reference of past work, and most
importantly the name and release of the film.

The following, shows the new posters for Battleship, that aim to advertise the film around highly
concentrated areas to try and attract to their target audience and allow them to gain
information and gain and interest in the film.
The posters seen have a recurrent colour scheme of blue, varying from navy blue and aqua
blue, this give it a very cold and mellow feel and maybe even upsetting, and more or less very
serious. To go along with this theme the posters tend to have the title in the same font and in
the same location with the same headline ‘The battle for Earth begins at sea’ at the bottom of
the posters.
Other Methods
The film company must use other methods to advertise their film. To do so they release
trailers online as well as on TV channels, and have web adverts to get across to there
audience . But using modern methods they can access a major free bit of advertisement
which is social media groups like on Facebook, which uses the method , word of mouth to
allow the audience to advertise the movie itself but talking positively about it.




All of these different marketing strategies give the target audience a feel for the movie and
what the genre is about this . The way that this works is the different marketing campaigns
draw in the audience and make them want to learn more about the film.
