Question Two: HOW DOES YOUR TITLE AND OPENING SEQUENCE REPRESENT
PARTICULAR SOCIAL GROUPS?
The social group that my title and opening sequence represents is female teenagers, male
doctors and parents. I have done this through the use of mise en scene by first the use of
costumes that my main character wears and the props that she uses. For example the main
role in my opening scene is wearing black skinny pants from Topshop with a stripped shirt.
This is a girly costume and I've made my character wear this because it is something that a
female teenager would wear and the costume is fashionable and in style. This will appeal to
teenagers and also represents their style. Another way I have represented this social group
through costume is when Lucy is wearing a Kaki green top. This colour is in style at the
moment and a lot of female teenagers will wear something of this colour and that will
therefore show them that the main role is a teenager and represent them and will be
relatable to my audience. In the sequence opening my main character is wearing Converse.
These will represent female teenagers because converse are the main and most common
shoes that are worn and therefore should appeal to everyone and represent any social
group.
Mise en scene has also represented female teenagers because in my opening
sequence the main character who is a female teenager is wearing make-up. This is
very important because this is the norm for teenagers and this is what any given
female would be wearing as most girls see it a necessity. Therefore I have
represented the social group through the use of make-up. Props have been used in
the opening sequence to show this social group as my main character is carrying a
black bag which has the River Island logo on the front. This shows the social group
because River Island is one of the biggest clothing stores in the UK and is where
most female teenagers will shop for clothing, bags etc… Therefore this is a brand
that many females will recognise and know what it is. Another way that I have tried
to represent this social group in my opening sequence is through eye contact. For
example when the main character is with the doctor there eye line is at the exact
same level. The reason I have done this is because I haven't wanted to make my
main character feel inferior to the doctor but I didn't want her to look like she was
bigger than him as this is not how a female teenager would act. Whereas if it was a
male teenager they make think that they are harder or braver so their eye-level may
be higher as they could want to insert dominance.
Another way that I have done this is that when my main character finds out
that the cancer has spread she looks down from the doctor and to the table.
This is important because the eye-line changes and the doctor and the main
character no longer have the same eye-line. I have done this because a
female may feel smaller and actually show her emotion and therefore would
go into herself to try and almost protect herself. Whereas if I was
representing a male teenager I might have kept the eye-level the same as
they may not be as likely to want to show emotion in front of people and
would be less open about it. Whereas if I was representing a male teenager I
might have kept the eye-level the same as they may not be as likely to want
to show emotion in front of people and would be less open about it.
The location which is a hospital represents this social group because when my
main character is in the hospital she acts how a female teenager would if she
was in that situation. For example she looks shy and worried when the doctor
is giving her the news about her having cancer and doesn't look him straight
in the eye.
Another social group that I represent in my opening sequence
is adults both male and female. For example I represent male
adults because I have a scene with a male doctor. In this scene
the doctor acts mature and confident at all times. This
represents the social group because this is how an adult
doctor would be seen to act as he would have control over
important situations and always be mature. The doctor also
has a beard. This represents male adults because it makes the
character look older and people can tell that the doctor is an
adult. The character is also wearing a shirt which is
professional and gives off the impression that the character
has an important role and fits with the character that he plays
in the opening sequence.
Props have also been used to represent this social group as the doctor
has a stethoscope around his shoulders. This is also a stereotype as
this is how you envisage a typical doctor looking and having with them.
Female adults are represented in the opening sequence of my film
because in the doctor’s scene I have the main characters mother
present. This social group is represented through clothing and makeup
because the character is not wearing too much makeup which you
would expect from an older generation as unlike teenagers they will
not care that much about their appearance. Clothing represents the
social group because the character is not wearing something you
would expect a teenager to wear and is instead wearing something
that a mum would wear. The reason for this is because mums are
expected to dress in something that is not revealing and more
conservative than something a teenager would wear and this is how
the mum character is portrayed in the opening sequence. This is also a
very stereotypical view of the social group.

Question 2

  • 1. Question Two: HOW DOES YOUR TITLE AND OPENING SEQUENCE REPRESENT PARTICULAR SOCIAL GROUPS? The social group that my title and opening sequence represents is female teenagers, male doctors and parents. I have done this through the use of mise en scene by first the use of costumes that my main character wears and the props that she uses. For example the main role in my opening scene is wearing black skinny pants from Topshop with a stripped shirt. This is a girly costume and I've made my character wear this because it is something that a female teenager would wear and the costume is fashionable and in style. This will appeal to teenagers and also represents their style. Another way I have represented this social group through costume is when Lucy is wearing a Kaki green top. This colour is in style at the moment and a lot of female teenagers will wear something of this colour and that will therefore show them that the main role is a teenager and represent them and will be relatable to my audience. In the sequence opening my main character is wearing Converse. These will represent female teenagers because converse are the main and most common shoes that are worn and therefore should appeal to everyone and represent any social group.
  • 2. Mise en scene has also represented female teenagers because in my opening sequence the main character who is a female teenager is wearing make-up. This is very important because this is the norm for teenagers and this is what any given female would be wearing as most girls see it a necessity. Therefore I have represented the social group through the use of make-up. Props have been used in the opening sequence to show this social group as my main character is carrying a black bag which has the River Island logo on the front. This shows the social group because River Island is one of the biggest clothing stores in the UK and is where most female teenagers will shop for clothing, bags etc… Therefore this is a brand that many females will recognise and know what it is. Another way that I have tried to represent this social group in my opening sequence is through eye contact. For example when the main character is with the doctor there eye line is at the exact same level. The reason I have done this is because I haven't wanted to make my main character feel inferior to the doctor but I didn't want her to look like she was bigger than him as this is not how a female teenager would act. Whereas if it was a male teenager they make think that they are harder or braver so their eye-level may be higher as they could want to insert dominance.
  • 3. Another way that I have done this is that when my main character finds out that the cancer has spread she looks down from the doctor and to the table. This is important because the eye-line changes and the doctor and the main character no longer have the same eye-line. I have done this because a female may feel smaller and actually show her emotion and therefore would go into herself to try and almost protect herself. Whereas if I was representing a male teenager I might have kept the eye-level the same as they may not be as likely to want to show emotion in front of people and would be less open about it. Whereas if I was representing a male teenager I might have kept the eye-level the same as they may not be as likely to want to show emotion in front of people and would be less open about it. The location which is a hospital represents this social group because when my main character is in the hospital she acts how a female teenager would if she was in that situation. For example she looks shy and worried when the doctor is giving her the news about her having cancer and doesn't look him straight in the eye.
  • 4. Another social group that I represent in my opening sequence is adults both male and female. For example I represent male adults because I have a scene with a male doctor. In this scene the doctor acts mature and confident at all times. This represents the social group because this is how an adult doctor would be seen to act as he would have control over important situations and always be mature. The doctor also has a beard. This represents male adults because it makes the character look older and people can tell that the doctor is an adult. The character is also wearing a shirt which is professional and gives off the impression that the character has an important role and fits with the character that he plays in the opening sequence.
  • 5. Props have also been used to represent this social group as the doctor has a stethoscope around his shoulders. This is also a stereotype as this is how you envisage a typical doctor looking and having with them. Female adults are represented in the opening sequence of my film because in the doctor’s scene I have the main characters mother present. This social group is represented through clothing and makeup because the character is not wearing too much makeup which you would expect from an older generation as unlike teenagers they will not care that much about their appearance. Clothing represents the social group because the character is not wearing something you would expect a teenager to wear and is instead wearing something that a mum would wear. The reason for this is because mums are expected to dress in something that is not revealing and more conservative than something a teenager would wear and this is how the mum character is portrayed in the opening sequence. This is also a very stereotypical view of the social group.
