CONSTRUCTIONIST THEORY: WHAT IS IT?
The constructionist theory is the idea that the media product and what it
represents can be made up of what the producer themselves thinks,
what society at the time would think and the reality.
From all this information the audience then choose whether or not to
accept the representation that they are being shown within the media
product. But also which view it is that they wish to see as the correct
one to acknowledge and take away from the specific media product.
CONSTRUCTIONIST THEORY
Firstly it can be seen theta the opinion of the producer is that:
Introverted people are very quiet
What it is like in reality:
They don’t feel the need to gain attention from other people as they are
fullfilled tby spending time by themselves and extroverted people need
some thing else to give them this type of fulfilment.
What the opinion of society would be:
Introverted peope don’t really like to talk to a lot of people compared to
extroverts and so they are noticed a lot less compared to te extroverted
people.
CONSTRUCTIONIST THEORY
Another type of representation that the audience can choose between
would be that:
The opinion of the producer within our production is that:
Introverted people just prefer to be alone and within their own company
What it actually is like in reality:
Introverted people just find it incredably uncomfortable to be arounfd
people unless they know them really well and the person or group of
people help the individual to feel comfortable.
What society tends to think at the time:
People that are specifically introverted find it very difficult to talk to new
people and just don’t want to, and so would rather keep the same group
of friends as oppesed to extroverts who are willing to make new friends
CONSTRUCTIONIST THEORY
Another opinion of the producer that can be shown within the opening
sequence would be that:
That students arent doing as badly as people think they are when they
come out of university:
What the reality of this situation is:
That students have a lot of loans to pay off that continue into their late 30’s
so they are all ion some kind of debt but it depends also on what they
choose to spend the disposable income on, as many choose to go out
with their friends.
What society tends to think:
Is that students just don’t have the money so they can only save up so
much money and it isnt going to be loads so it is likely that whatever
they do buy is not going to be of top quality, compared to h9ow it will be
in the future when they have more money.
DOES OUR REPRESENTATION SUIT OUR
INSTITUTION?
I would say that our representations do suit the institution as we are making a
product that is an independent film. These types of films are often trying to
achieve ‘social realistic’ themes and the reason for this is that they don’t
want to be like the more mainstreams films that have the Hollywood
narrative, instead they are aiming to create a film that is relatable to real life.
To suit the niche sophisticated audience that they are aiming to please and
challenge.
So we have included things that highlight and suit the stereotypical
representations however much like real life situation we have decided to
challenge these stereotypical ideas and norms.
However one representation that I would suggest that we didn’t really challenge
to much was the gender idea as I think it would have been more significant to
the audience to see a male in this type of position as they will not be seen as
the most powerful and to put the art teacher within our production as a
female. As this would challenge the idea of power and the stereotypical view
that men should always be in control and of a higher position than women.
This would then also challenge the idea of hegemony.
