A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Editor's Notes
Welcome to 21st Century teaching. My goal for this presentation is to connect the word ‘technology” to our everyday life. I also want to introduce three tools that connect the technology skills we have now to using technology for professional growth.
In this presentation we are going to discuss the technology in our world and how we use it. I will talk about the flexibility and choices we have with technology. I will also discuss how technology can be used in teaching. This class will focus on three specific teaching tools and how they can benefit us.
Image retrieved (Yahoo Images, 2014). Technology has become a very common part of our world. Our entertainment systems such as the TV/Cable/Direct TV are technology based. We have to learn to use the correct buttons and the correct “code” to watch or record our programs. Digital cameras, video cameras, gaming systems, cell phones, and the internet are all common in our households. Even our modern appliances have various buttons and choices for different functions.
Images retrieved (Yahoo Images, 2014). When I first changed to my current camera I was frustrated. There were many buttons and I seemed to always hit the wrong one. My regular statement was….”I just want a simple camera that takes pictures.” Now the same camera is one of my best tools. I am able to take pictures of my daughter’s sport games in active mode and take landscape pictures when we are on vacation. My modern coffeemaker, that made me want to scream, allows me to set a timer for my morning coffee. My crock pot with too many buttons allows me to program the start time so my food is not over cooked.
Image retrieved from (Yahoo Images, 2014). All of us use technology in different forms. All of us create a type of routine or system to using our technology quickly and easily. Some of us like to use a desktop computer. Others only like to use a lap top or tablet. Cell phones can be used as just a phone or a mini-computer. You can access email, get directions, look for an address, use social media, and access information anywhere. Technology gives us unlimited tools to use when we want and how we want. I have tried various technology tools and I have found a system that is easy for me. I do have the internet on my phone, but I prefer not to use it. I check my email or connect to the internet from my IPad when I am not at home or work. I prefer to work with documents or any type of lesson planning on a laptop or desk top computer because I am comfortable with using the applications. However, my husband likes to access the internet and works with documents on his phone. The flexibility of technology can meet both of our needs.
Image retrieved (Yahoo Images, 2014). How do you use the internet for recreation? We have access to the internet anywhere and anytime. Do you download music on an Ipod to use when you take a walk? Do you use skype to connect with family and friends? Some of us may not be a huge fan of technology and choose not to use social media such as facebook and twitter. However, we do check our email and play a game or two to unwind. You many not think of yourself as a tech person, but all of us use technology in one form or another.
Image retrieved (Yahoo Images, 2014). How do you use the internet for personal organization or professional needs? Technology has made our personal chores and professional needs easier. We upload and organize pictures from our camera. We make airplane and hotel reservations. We schedule our family vacations. We look for recipes, directions, and tips for pruning our roses. As educators, the internet allows us to keep a calendar, organize our contacts, research standards, store activity ideas, and store our lesson plans. Research is easy to do and the resources are unlimited.
Image retrieved, (Yahoo Images, 2014). We can use technology for professional growth and collaboration. Technology allows us to research standards, lessons ideas, and activities. Technology allows us to save helpful information to use at a later time. We can organize and separate resources into groups with curation tools. We can share our ideas with fellow teachers and create a library of resources for our grade level.
The three tools I plan to introduce in this class are Pearltree.com, Smore.com, and RSS feeds. Pearltree.com and Smore.com are two tools that allow us to save, organize, and share resources. RSS feeds are electronic newspapers with an infinite amount of current information.
I wanted to share specific scenarios of when and how I used these three tools. Pearltree.com allows you to grab and organize information. Then you can share your specific pearltree or use a general name and password so everyone can add or delete resources. Two years ago our school decided to move over to the common core standards. Every teacher had to learn new standards and essentially create new lessons because everything had changed. Our grade level created a pearltree account for everyone and posted the access information on our grade level shared folders. (You could also email to your colleagues). Every teacher in our grade level had the ability to add and delete resources. When one of us would find a very useful site or resources we could easily upload the link onto the pearltree site. The options for different pearls (or categories) allowed us to organize the information. We had a pearl for Language Arts standards. We had a pearl for math standards. We had a pearl for activity ideas. We had a pear for unit or lesson ideas. In a short amount of time we had a group of helpful resources for each category. Our grade level teachers were able to collaborate on information and make the transition to the Common Core Standards easier. I want to continue with the scenario of changing to the Common Core Standards. Any teacher who has done a large change at the school understands the amount of work and research we must do. The new standards changed our Language Arts Curriculum. Every class in our grade level had to do a unit on the same novel. Different teachers introduced the unit at different times throughout the year, but everyone had to do it. I was one of the first classes to teach the unit. I researched the unit, different lessons, and different activities. I found various videos, websites, etc to help create my unit. I realized I had valuable information that could help my colleagues. I curated all my favorite resources on one flyer in smore.com. I was able to post videos, websites, and add personal notes or narration about each resources. I was also able to send the link to my colleagues so they could view the resources I used. Our grade level decided to use technology so each teacher did not have to “reinvent the wheel” for the new standards and the new curriculum.
RSS feeds are electronic newspapers that continually update with new information. You can choose a general subject or a specific subject and the RSS feed will gather information from all over the web. The drawback to using an RSS feed as a shared site is the information cannot be censored. I chose to use a RSS feed to gather current and reputable information. I would then share my resources with my colleagues. I created an account on a RSS feed. I set my interest to Common Cores Standards and lessons. I received an overwhelming amount of information. However, I was able to skim the title and notes about each source to narrow my options. I also became familiar with specific sites that I found very helpful and I would revisit those sites first when I needed information.
My goal for this class is simple. I do not want you to feel as if you HAVE to use these tools. I do not want you to use these tools if you do not see a benefit. I would like to get you familiar with these tools and discuss possible benefits. I would like you to understand how they work and what they do. This way you have the option to use them if you think they may help you research, plan, and collaborate.
