How does your media
product represent
particular social
groups?
Audience and
Representation
For all media products it is important to address the
audience accordingly and conveying the right
representation of the audience by the genre and the
conventions used. In magazines it is particularly important
because the audience who are targeted must be evident so
that it reaches the right social group. The representation
must be positive of the social groups in order to gain the
attention and sell the magazine.
In what ways does my design work
represent a particular social group?
I have included images of a young teenage girl who
aspires to make it in the music industry. I have used
this purposely as I feel that the audience will be
inspired by her as the audience are young and so is
she. I have dressed the model in clothing that is young
and stylish and that the audience will also like to wear,
by having dresses, playsuit, crop tops and shorts they
are all fun and youthful and therefore show a
representation of young girls to be this way. She is also
posed in a way that shows girls to be pretty and
innocent, which is a dominant ideology of teenage girls
in the media, therefore I used this representation to
communicate the idea.
The mise-en-scene of my main images represent the social
group as youthful and fun, as they listen to happy upbeat
pop music. The location of my images is set with a plain
background with bright lighting, I have done this because I
didn't’t want the background to dominate the image and
take away the main focus which was the model. I also found
that conventionally in a pop magazine the image always has
a plain background therefore to communicate the same
social group I also did this. It also communicates that they
are a main focus in the music industry as a whole because
they get the lifestyle of modeling as well as music. I did
close ups to portray an innocent and happy artist, and
posed her in typical female manors.
How does my product represent
my target audience?
My product represents my target audience to be
young and have a keen interest in pop music and pop
culture. I have portrayed this representation by the
cover lines that I have used and the content of my
magazine. It includes cover lines about the well
known artists in the pop genre like Justin Bieber,
5SOS, Miley Cyrus and One Direction, using these
artists represent the audience to listen to these
artists as they dominate pop. I feel my magazine
supports the dominant ideas about my social group
as I have used the stereotypical colours, layout,
styling and content of existing music magazines who
are also representing similar social groups.
I also included images from a One
Direction concert as they are a
boy band that are well known and
the audience will enjoy. I wanted
the images to be taken from a
concert because the competition
states that the audience can win
tickets, therefore it will give the
audience an insight into what they
will see. I used a photo of make up
also because teenage girls are
commonly interested in make up
and beauty items and it portrays
them to want to use the products.
