In this workshop for DPLAFest in Washington, DC, we explored the GIF in its natural habitat: the internet. But first, some background: What are GIFs? How did they develop? How do you say “GIF”?
We're looking at how to use GIFs, when they’re most successful, the challenges associated with using them, and how to make, find, and use them yourself. We talked about the ins and outs of some content sources, including resources in the DPLA, and reviewed a few apps and programs you can use to make and share them yourself. And then, with some audience input, we demonstrated how to make a GIF using open source images to tell a joke, punctuate a thought, or convey an emotion. A picture is worth a thousand words? Well, a GIF is worth a million.

- 1. Question 1 In what ways does your media product use or challenge forms and codes and conventions seen in real media products?
- 2. When constructing my main task, I didn’t break many codes and conventions that I had researched; for the simple reason that I wanted to make my publication look as professional as possible. By getting rid of these codes that make a magazine recognizable, my target audience may become confused and would not be attracted to my product – resulting in it not serving its purpose and selling to the right audiences.
- 3. Research from areas such as my similar text analysis, and studying codes and conventions of existing publications contributed towards decisions made concerning my own magazine. For example, on the front covers of existing rock magazines such as Kerrang! And NME, a large, bold masthead is situated at the top of the page. However, in order to make my magazine unique to a potential consumer and to challenge codes and conventions I have given my masthead a gradient effect, which most rock magazines do not have. This also makes my masthead more eye-catching due to its unique quality. Gradient Effect
- 4. Following the example of other publications, I filled my front page with many enticing straplines. To make certain words and subheadings stand out, I have used different colours and fonts, as seen in existing publications. In an attempt to make my magazine look professional and realistic in comparison to existing media products, I have used a limited number of fonts and created a colour scheme (which is used throughout my publication). This colour scheme consists of blue, white and black, and challenges the codes and conventions lot a rock magazine, because during my research I found that magazines of the rock genre usually consisted of the colour scheme red, black and white.
- 5. The layout of my contents page is influenced by existing contents pages of rock magazines, including Kerrang! Rocksound and Mojo. I have included a larger image at the top of my page, a feature which can be found in most music magazines, to emphasize the importance of the main article found in the publication. I have also matched this image to the main image found on the front cover, further meeting codes and conventions.
- 6. To make my magazine unique, I have placed the title of the page and the editor’s letter over this image, including a strikethrough under the title. Although this feature can be found in magazines such as Kerrang!, the strikethrough under my title emphasizes its importance and is carefully cropped around the image of my artist, also showing her importance in my publication and giving the page a sleek, professional yet unique look. - 7. Furthermore, as my editor’s letter is situated on top of an image, I have placed a dark background behind it to make it stand out and easier for a potential consumer to read. This is not unusual, however instead of creating a bold box of colour under my text; I have used the brush tool to paint underneath it, creating a spray effect. This adheres to the chosen genre of my magazine, also making it unique. - 8. On the double page spread of my magazine, I mainly stuck to the uses of codes and conventions of professional rock magazines that I had researched in my similar text analysis. I included several pull-quotes on my page, including one as the title, and used more colloquial language to address the reader – which I witnessed in professional articles during my subject matter research.
- 9. As well as this, I made my magazine look more professional by following the example of other publications and including a secondary image, and making the text fit around it. For my main image, however, I did not crop it and used the majority of the image for the background of my article. I did not see this feature in many other double page spreads, but I decided to arrange my layout like this to make my article more visually appealing than a plain white background from a studio.
