3. Conventions - continued
• My cover uses conventional features of a real magazine, such
as a masthead and a main cover line, to make it appear
realistic and convincing. My cover compares to an issue of
Kerrang!, and although the placement is varied slightly, the
features are still included and used effectively as they would
be in any magazine. Every magazine cover is different.
4. The cover
• My cover was inspired by Kerrang! Because it discusses the genre of music
I personally enjoy, so the theme of my magazine is rock and metal
inspired.
• My cover doesn’t really challenge any conventions of regular magazines. It
is based very closely on my comparison cover, so they have very close
resemblance and use typical conformities.
• The information on my cover is distributed evenly, there is some on both
top and bottom banner, left and right column, and some on the main
cover line, which is slightly off-centre.
• The style of my cover is appropriately suited to the theme of rock and
metal. The fonts, images, colour scheme and layout are based on a real
Kerrang! Magazine so it mimics the ‘loud’ and ‘chaotic’ appearance of
Kerrang! Covers.
5. This contents page is part
one of two contents
pages, this one being the
general outline of the
magazines main features
as opposed to a listing of
the contents of every
page. I have conformed
with the layout, colour
scheme and the general
positioning of text, titles
and images in my
reference to mimic it
closely. I have made
subtle differences to
prevent it being a replica
but also stuck close to
the reference to be
conventional and look
professional.
6. In my image I decided to look upwards to challenge
the conformity of the model having eye contact
with the reader. I am making the reader think and
also using it to send a message. Although the model
looking at the camera is conventional and is meant
to engage the reader, by not looking at the camera I
am sending a message about the attitude of the
artist being interviewed and also drawing attention
to the double page by making the reader wonder
why the person is not looking at them.
Besides this I have conformed with the colour
scheme and layout of the reference . Similarly to
most double spreads, I have used a large main
image and plain background with a large bold title.
