Question 1
 Andrew Goodwins theory on music videos: There are
three types of relations between songs and videos :
illustration, amplification and disjuncture.

 illustration: when music videos tell a story that link to
lyrics.

 Amplification: when music videos introduce new
meanings that do not contradict lyrics but add layers of
meaning.

 disjuncture: is where there is little connection between
video and lyrics.
 Carol Vernallis main ideas on editing and camera
work:

 - Music videos bring in the audiences attention by
breaking the rules of 'continuity editing.

 - Jump cuts are used.

 - Edits stand out to the audience because of swipes
and special effect.

 - Camera may move in time with music.

 - Base tracks are used frequently to give the video
structure
Andrew Goodwin:

 Our music video follows the ‘amplification’ principle from Andrew Goodwin's
theory on music videos.

 We didn’t necessarily tell a story however we added extra layers of meaning.
 Linking to the lyric ‘let her go’ we didn't literally show the artist letting go of a
female however we portrayed it through the metaphor of letting go lanterns into
the sky which we feel gives it a deeper meaning which isn't too obvious and
cliché and doesn’t contradict the lyrics.

We also took certain ideas fromVernallis’ theory as when it came to editing we
made sure it went with the beat showing effectively the link between the music
video and song and making it more entertaining.



we challenged her theory because we didn’t use swipes and break the continuity
editing as a means to attract the audience however we used other methods such
as editing to the beat as I have pointed out.



Supporting her theory we did indeed use various base tracks to build structure. We
did base tracks in different locations, locations of which we feel fit perfectly to the
song
Similar to my digipak, edsheeran goes with the simple look, nothing is too
out there as it fits the music which is mellow. Both Passengers and
edsheerans albums use the same colour scheme throughout and same font
which is what I did. This shows how I have followed the conventions and I
have not gone against the genre indie/folk.

Oasis –
Wonder wall

We were intrigued by
this videos different
types of shots they
showed effectively the
motif of the guitar
similar to us and as
the first two pictures
illustrate they had a
close up of the artist
playing the guitar and
also a mid shot which
we also used. This will
show the link between
song and video and
make them work very
well together. We also
both used a lot of
close ups to show the
artists face very clearly
while he lip syncs.
