Carol Vernallis believes that edits happen much more in music videos and that there is a lot of disjuncture within a
music video and also she believes that there is base track editing as the rhythm is normally linked to the song.
Vernallis’ theory mainly states that:
1.The camera moves in time with the music
2.There are a lot of jump cuts used
3.Edits are obvious to interest the viewer’s more interested.
4.Base tracks are used a lot to structure the video
Music videos are normally used to help promote the song and one way how they do this is by making the
audience remember it by the video. When someone watches the video they will think of the song and
possibly vice versa. Andrew Goodwin believed there were three different types of music videos:
1. Amplification is when new meanings occur and it relates to the lyrics, it doesn’t contradict the lyrics.
2. Illustration is when the music video itself tells the story.
3. Disjuncture is when the video itself has little or no connection with the lyrics from the song like they are
two different things and it can sometimes contradict itself.
Andrew Goodwin also believed that traditional narrative style isn’t really associated with pop videos and that
they rely more on repetition to keep the viewers interested.
I think our video has everything Carol Vernallis’ theory states. The camera was always in time with the music as
this makes the video look much better and gives the viewers a better understanding. Also we have loads of
jump cuts in order to keep the viewers interested I believe jump cuts are very useful as they skip from one scene
to another in a matter of milliseconds. Further on we used obvious edits to keep the viewers more interested
for example when the two buses passed each other we slow motioned it to make it look more effective. Finally
Carol Vernallis’ believes to use base tracks in order to structure the video and I believe we done this very well as
we used a few noticeable base tracks including: the park, the bus stop, river Thames and London scenery.
Below this slide share is a video consisting of:
• An example of how the camera moves in time with the music
• An example of how we have used jump cuts
• An example of how we have used obvious edits
• An example of the base tracks we used to structure our video
I believe our music video can be related to Andrew Goodwin’s theory as when you watch our video it will make you think of the
song and when you listen to the song it will make you think of the video. We planned out exactly what we wanted to do to follow
the conventions of this theory and I believe we achieved what we set out to do as the whole video starts from the morning with
sunshine and throughout the video it goes from daytime to night time. We done this because the lyrics suited it and this I where we
followed the amplification part o the theory as our video links to the lyrics. For example when talking about the past we used black
and white effects to resemble the past and also we often showed clips of sunshine as the lyrics contains needing sunshine. Also
when the lyrics said “I was in a place that I didn’t wanna be” we used a clip of our artist isolated in a tunnel with his head in his
hands to link it to the lyrics. In a way the music video does tell the story as it goes from morning to night to represent the artists
journey with the base tracks as well so I believe again we have partly followed Andrew Goodwin’s theory of illustration here. There
is no disjuncture in our video as we wanted to avoid this. Finally as we have a chorus we did have repetition in our video to keep
the viewers interested however we did not rely on it as without the repetition I believe we would of still kept the viewers
interested.

Below this slide share is a video that
consists of an example of when the lyrics
match the video
This video has influenced me mainly by the location and use of base tracks as it is located in
central London. This video contains shots of the London eye and river Thames and that is
exactly where we planned to get our footage for our video therefore its only right this video
influences me. Also jump cuts are often used to change location from say the London eye to
the Thames and this gave us a good idea as it is what we wanted to do as well. Finally the use
of edits influenced me. For example, the black and white effects is something we wanted to
do and also there were fast motion effects and even though we did slow motion it still gave
me the ability to see how effective a similar effect is and showed me it makes the video more
interesting. We also did a bit of fast motion in our video and by watching Devlin’s video it
showed me that it would be very effective. Below is the link to the video “Devlin – London
City”

Below this slide share is the Devlin – London City music video
This video strongly influenced me mainly because how the lyrics link with the music video
(Goodwin’s theory). It’s a very emotional song like ours so it gave me the ability too see how a
video can be linked with the touching lyrics and in what way. For example every lyric had an
action and this was clearly shown such as when it said “sells love to another man, it’s too cold
outside” It showed the performer acting as a prostitute in the cold. As our song is very emotional
we tried to achieve linking the lyrics to the video in order to make it more emotional. Also in this
music video she wakes up and is active during the day then finally falls asleep at the end. It was
great seeing this in action, it’s like a journey of one day from morning to night and we were able
to use the same structure as this. We started with shots in the morning then ended with shots at
night to show the journey of our artist on a typical day just like “Ed Sheeran – A Team” did.
Further on there were also edits used such as the fast motion which made viewers realise it is a
journey throughout the day and we were able to add fast motion in. Black and white was used
throughout the whole video to represent the past and we were also able to do this. Finally there
were a wide range of camera shots used such as at the very start there was a close up to show
the performers emotions and then there were many wide shots to show the location and these
also made her look smaller and this helped give the indication she isn’t big and is suffering. This
influenced me because we planned to use wide shots to get scenery in the footage and also when
isolated such as when our artist is under a tunnel we used a wide shot to make him look small
and that he is struggling. We also planned to use a range of shots in order to promote our artist
and keep the viewers interested. Below is the link to the music video “Ed Sheeran – A Team”

Below this slide share is the Ed Sheeran – A Team music video
From looking back at my ancillary work I feel that I have followed all the
conventions that are associated with a digipak. I created the album by
simply doing it how the majority of albums are created. However there
aren’t many albums that contain text on the inside and I decided to do
this by adding part of the songs lyrics as I believe there was space to do
so and it gave it a much better look. I also included an Image of the artist
on the back cover with the track list to further promote him. This isn’t
really done by many albums so it is a bit different how I have designed
my digipak. Other then that I followed all the main conventions of a
digipak which included: Large and clear image of the artist on front cover
to promote the artist, larger artist name than album name as the idea is
to promote the artist and not the album, clear font so can be read easily
– my font is not the clearest in the world but I believe it’s easily readable
and gives my digipak a much better look, track list, barcode, copyright
information and production logo on the back cover, basic colours so the
main attention is on the artist and finally, included the album name,
artist name, serial number and production logo on the side panel. The
way I have laid out my digipak is just like the majority of albums and I got
influences from them so thought it would be best to keep it this way.
Below is my final digipak to show how I have followed the conventions.
From looking back at my ancillary work I feel that I have followed all the
conventions that are associated with a magazine advert. Once again I
created the magazine advert how the majority of magazine adverts are
created. I used a very large image of my artist to promote them along with
the name of the artist in larger font than all the other pieces of text as it is
the most important. I also included the album cover on the advert just to let
people know what to buy and I also included where you can buy it (iTunes
and hmv), where you can hear about it (Facebook and twitter), when the
album Is out (OUT NOW), what the album includes (Hit single – I Need) and
also the album name (Letter to god). The only thing I did on the magazine
advert that you may not see on that many albums was add a quote what a
company has said about the album. I decided to do this because it makes it
look more professional and with the stars makes it look more attractive.
Overall though that’s the only thing I did differently to most albums and my
layout of the magazine advert consists of all the conventions associated with
a magazine advert. On the right is my final digipak to show how I have
followed the conventions.
As our music video song is “I Need” by Maverick Sabre
which is featured in the album “lonely are the brave”, I
believe it is only right that this has a major influence on
my production of my digipak as it is the same genre. The
artist is just showing his face and even though he is not
looking straight it’s clear to see who it is therefore this
has influenced me and made me realise I should have a
big image of my artist on the front cover. The black
background has also influenced me as it suits the type of
genre the album is and our music video and also it gives
people the feeling its quite sad and emotional rather
then having a bright yellow background which could
represent happy energetic songs. Clear font is also used
which is easy to read and this is a big factor when
creating a digipak therefore I will use a similar font to the
one shown on this album cover.
Once again this album cover has influenced me for the
creation of my digipak. The artist is clearly shown in the
middle of the cover looking directly straight and stands
out, this helps promote the artist and is exactly how I
want mine to be. Also the background is just black
therefore takes your attention to the actual image,
album name, artist name and not the background.
Instead of just black and white as in Maverick Sabre’s
digipak, this one uses pink and even though I’m not going
to use pink it makes me think about using a different
colour for the font because it gives it a better look and
stands out. The type of font used is also clear and easy to
read.
This album has also influenced me, mainly through the image
used. The artist is looking directly straight and is situated in the
middle and is very clear to see, helping promote the artist
which is my objective. This digipak is different to the other two
because it is not black and white themed and I can see from
this with no black and white effects the image seems more
realistic and in my opinion looks better therefore this has
influenced me not to put an effect on my image. This is exactly
how I want my album cover, however the type of font and size
of font doesn’t appeal to me and therefore I will be using a
clearer font with a bigger size and also position the font
elsewhere. By looking at this album this its made me realise
how I want my font to be so even though it hasn’t influenced
me as much as the others its made me think what I want to do.
Both these album covers from previous students have influenced
me equally. They both have a large image of the artist which helps
to promote them and now that I’ve seen this its made me realize
this is what I want to do as well. Other then the large image there
is a picture of the artist on the back cover with the track list beside
them. I have been thinking about doing that with mine but wasn’t
sure if it was a good idea however I am now sure and will definitely
be doing it. The more pictures of the artist the more it promotes
the artist I think. The album cover below probably influences me
more because of the font, it is very clear and easy to read and as
for the album cover above I believe their could be small issues
with certain people not being able to read the track list. Both have
good use of colour’s, especially the top album cover I really like
how it stands out because the eye colour is used as the font colour.
Finally both albums don’t have too much going on and can easily
see the artist name, album name, track list and other information.
I will make sure I keep mine fairly basic and not overdo it.
This is another example of previous students work that
has influenced me. The image above is the inside of
the digipak. The inside has influenced me because
there is a design on the CD and this is what I want to
do. The CD doesn't’t look boring and there is a synergy
link because of the big “X”. I am looking to add synergy
into my work by doing this also. Also in the inside there
is an image of the artist and I am looking to have an
image there as well. I am not too sure if I’m going to
have an image of the artist there or location however
its made me see that it’s the right thing to do. The use
of colour is also great with only orange being used and
with a bit of black and white between the inside and
outside of the digipak. I will be using mainly black and
white as my colour’s but not more then that.

Question 1 fin

  • 1.
  • 2. Carol Vernallis believes that edits happen much more in music videos and that there is a lot of disjuncture within a music video and also she believes that there is base track editing as the rhythm is normally linked to the song. Vernallis’ theory mainly states that: 1.The camera moves in time with the music 2.There are a lot of jump cuts used 3.Edits are obvious to interest the viewer’s more interested. 4.Base tracks are used a lot to structure the video
  • 3. Music videos are normally used to help promote the song and one way how they do this is by making the audience remember it by the video. When someone watches the video they will think of the song and possibly vice versa. Andrew Goodwin believed there were three different types of music videos: 1. Amplification is when new meanings occur and it relates to the lyrics, it doesn’t contradict the lyrics. 2. Illustration is when the music video itself tells the story. 3. Disjuncture is when the video itself has little or no connection with the lyrics from the song like they are two different things and it can sometimes contradict itself. Andrew Goodwin also believed that traditional narrative style isn’t really associated with pop videos and that they rely more on repetition to keep the viewers interested.
  • 4. I think our video has everything Carol Vernallis’ theory states. The camera was always in time with the music as this makes the video look much better and gives the viewers a better understanding. Also we have loads of jump cuts in order to keep the viewers interested I believe jump cuts are very useful as they skip from one scene to another in a matter of milliseconds. Further on we used obvious edits to keep the viewers more interested for example when the two buses passed each other we slow motioned it to make it look more effective. Finally Carol Vernallis’ believes to use base tracks in order to structure the video and I believe we done this very well as we used a few noticeable base tracks including: the park, the bus stop, river Thames and London scenery. Below this slide share is a video consisting of: • An example of how the camera moves in time with the music • An example of how we have used jump cuts • An example of how we have used obvious edits • An example of the base tracks we used to structure our video
  • 5. I believe our music video can be related to Andrew Goodwin’s theory as when you watch our video it will make you think of the song and when you listen to the song it will make you think of the video. We planned out exactly what we wanted to do to follow the conventions of this theory and I believe we achieved what we set out to do as the whole video starts from the morning with sunshine and throughout the video it goes from daytime to night time. We done this because the lyrics suited it and this I where we followed the amplification part o the theory as our video links to the lyrics. For example when talking about the past we used black and white effects to resemble the past and also we often showed clips of sunshine as the lyrics contains needing sunshine. Also when the lyrics said “I was in a place that I didn’t wanna be” we used a clip of our artist isolated in a tunnel with his head in his hands to link it to the lyrics. In a way the music video does tell the story as it goes from morning to night to represent the artists journey with the base tracks as well so I believe again we have partly followed Andrew Goodwin’s theory of illustration here. There is no disjuncture in our video as we wanted to avoid this. Finally as we have a chorus we did have repetition in our video to keep the viewers interested however we did not rely on it as without the repetition I believe we would of still kept the viewers interested. Below this slide share is a video that consists of an example of when the lyrics match the video

  • 7. This video has influenced me mainly by the location and use of base tracks as it is located in central London. This video contains shots of the London eye and river Thames and that is exactly where we planned to get our footage for our video therefore its only right this video influences me. Also jump cuts are often used to change location from say the London eye to the Thames and this gave us a good idea as it is what we wanted to do as well. Finally the use of edits influenced me. For example, the black and white effects is something we wanted to do and also there were fast motion effects and even though we did slow motion it still gave me the ability to see how effective a similar effect is and showed me it makes the video more interesting. We also did a bit of fast motion in our video and by watching Devlin’s video it showed me that it would be very effective. Below is the link to the video “Devlin – London City” Below this slide share is the Devlin – London City music video
  • 8. This video strongly influenced me mainly because how the lyrics link with the music video (Goodwin’s theory). It’s a very emotional song like ours so it gave me the ability too see how a video can be linked with the touching lyrics and in what way. For example every lyric had an action and this was clearly shown such as when it said “sells love to another man, it’s too cold outside” It showed the performer acting as a prostitute in the cold. As our song is very emotional we tried to achieve linking the lyrics to the video in order to make it more emotional. Also in this music video she wakes up and is active during the day then finally falls asleep at the end. It was great seeing this in action, it’s like a journey of one day from morning to night and we were able to use the same structure as this. We started with shots in the morning then ended with shots at night to show the journey of our artist on a typical day just like “Ed Sheeran – A Team” did. Further on there were also edits used such as the fast motion which made viewers realise it is a journey throughout the day and we were able to add fast motion in. Black and white was used throughout the whole video to represent the past and we were also able to do this. Finally there were a wide range of camera shots used such as at the very start there was a close up to show the performers emotions and then there were many wide shots to show the location and these also made her look smaller and this helped give the indication she isn’t big and is suffering. This influenced me because we planned to use wide shots to get scenery in the footage and also when isolated such as when our artist is under a tunnel we used a wide shot to make him look small and that he is struggling. We also planned to use a range of shots in order to promote our artist and keep the viewers interested. Below is the link to the music video “Ed Sheeran – A Team” Below this slide share is the Ed Sheeran – A Team music video

  • 10. From looking back at my ancillary work I feel that I have followed all the conventions that are associated with a digipak. I created the album by simply doing it how the majority of albums are created. However there aren’t many albums that contain text on the inside and I decided to do this by adding part of the songs lyrics as I believe there was space to do so and it gave it a much better look. I also included an Image of the artist on the back cover with the track list to further promote him. This isn’t really done by many albums so it is a bit different how I have designed my digipak. Other then that I followed all the main conventions of a digipak which included: Large and clear image of the artist on front cover to promote the artist, larger artist name than album name as the idea is to promote the artist and not the album, clear font so can be read easily – my font is not the clearest in the world but I believe it’s easily readable and gives my digipak a much better look, track list, barcode, copyright information and production logo on the back cover, basic colours so the main attention is on the artist and finally, included the album name, artist name, serial number and production logo on the side panel. The way I have laid out my digipak is just like the majority of albums and I got influences from them so thought it would be best to keep it this way. Below is my final digipak to show how I have followed the conventions.
  • 11. From looking back at my ancillary work I feel that I have followed all the conventions that are associated with a magazine advert. Once again I created the magazine advert how the majority of magazine adverts are created. I used a very large image of my artist to promote them along with the name of the artist in larger font than all the other pieces of text as it is the most important. I also included the album cover on the advert just to let people know what to buy and I also included where you can buy it (iTunes and hmv), where you can hear about it (Facebook and twitter), when the album Is out (OUT NOW), what the album includes (Hit single – I Need) and also the album name (Letter to god). The only thing I did on the magazine advert that you may not see on that many albums was add a quote what a company has said about the album. I decided to do this because it makes it look more professional and with the stars makes it look more attractive. Overall though that’s the only thing I did differently to most albums and my layout of the magazine advert consists of all the conventions associated with a magazine advert. On the right is my final digipak to show how I have followed the conventions.

  • 13. As our music video song is “I Need” by Maverick Sabre which is featured in the album “lonely are the brave”, I believe it is only right that this has a major influence on my production of my digipak as it is the same genre. The artist is just showing his face and even though he is not looking straight it’s clear to see who it is therefore this has influenced me and made me realise I should have a big image of my artist on the front cover. The black background has also influenced me as it suits the type of genre the album is and our music video and also it gives people the feeling its quite sad and emotional rather then having a bright yellow background which could represent happy energetic songs. Clear font is also used which is easy to read and this is a big factor when creating a digipak therefore I will use a similar font to the one shown on this album cover.
  • 14. Once again this album cover has influenced me for the creation of my digipak. The artist is clearly shown in the middle of the cover looking directly straight and stands out, this helps promote the artist and is exactly how I want mine to be. Also the background is just black therefore takes your attention to the actual image, album name, artist name and not the background. Instead of just black and white as in Maverick Sabre’s digipak, this one uses pink and even though I’m not going to use pink it makes me think about using a different colour for the font because it gives it a better look and stands out. The type of font used is also clear and easy to read.
  • 15. This album has also influenced me, mainly through the image used. The artist is looking directly straight and is situated in the middle and is very clear to see, helping promote the artist which is my objective. This digipak is different to the other two because it is not black and white themed and I can see from this with no black and white effects the image seems more realistic and in my opinion looks better therefore this has influenced me not to put an effect on my image. This is exactly how I want my album cover, however the type of font and size of font doesn’t appeal to me and therefore I will be using a clearer font with a bigger size and also position the font elsewhere. By looking at this album this its made me realise how I want my font to be so even though it hasn’t influenced me as much as the others its made me think what I want to do.

  • 17. Both these album covers from previous students have influenced me equally. They both have a large image of the artist which helps to promote them and now that I’ve seen this its made me realize this is what I want to do as well. Other then the large image there is a picture of the artist on the back cover with the track list beside them. I have been thinking about doing that with mine but wasn’t sure if it was a good idea however I am now sure and will definitely be doing it. The more pictures of the artist the more it promotes the artist I think. The album cover below probably influences me more because of the font, it is very clear and easy to read and as for the album cover above I believe their could be small issues with certain people not being able to read the track list. Both have good use of colour’s, especially the top album cover I really like how it stands out because the eye colour is used as the font colour. Finally both albums don’t have too much going on and can easily see the artist name, album name, track list and other information. I will make sure I keep mine fairly basic and not overdo it.
  • 18. This is another example of previous students work that has influenced me. The image above is the inside of the digipak. The inside has influenced me because there is a design on the CD and this is what I want to do. The CD doesn't’t look boring and there is a synergy link because of the big “X”. I am looking to add synergy into my work by doing this also. Also in the inside there is an image of the artist and I am looking to have an image there as well. I am not too sure if I’m going to have an image of the artist there or location however its made me see that it’s the right thing to do. The use of colour is also great with only orange being used and with a bit of black and white between the inside and outside of the digipak. I will be using mainly black and white as my colour’s but not more then that.
