At the core of Lean Manufacturing philosophy is the concept of elimination of waste. It is about getting precisely the right resources to precisely the right place and at the right time to make only the necessary products in the most efficient manner possible.
The concepts of the elimination of waste can be easily traced to Benjamin Franklin. Poor Richard encouraged the concepts of elimination of waste in numerous ways. Adages like “Waste not, want not”, “A penny
saved is two pence clear…Save and have” and “He that idly loses 5s. [shillings] worth of time, loses 5s., and might as prudently throw 5s. into the river.” Yes, it was Benjamin Franklin that educated us about the possibility that avoiding unnecessary costs could return more profit than simply increasing total sales.
It was Henry Ford who took the concept of the elimination of waste and integrated it into daily operations at his manufacturing facilities. Mr. Ford’s attitude can be seen in his books, “My Life and Work” (1922) and in “Today and Tomorrow” (1926) where he describes the folly of waste and introduces the world to Just-In-Time manufacturing. Mr. Ford cites inspiration from Benjamin Franklin as part of the foundation of these concepts.
However, it wasn’t until Toyota’s Chief Engineer, Taiichi Ohno systematized these concepts and the concept of pull (Kanban) into the Toyota Production System and created a cohesive production philosophy that was focused on the elimination of waste, that the world was able to see the real power of Lean Manufacturing. Interestingly enough, when Mr. Ohno was asked about the inspiration of his system, he merely laughed and said he read most of it in Henry Ford’s book.
Part 1 of this report will focus on one very specific Lean Manufacturing method known as 5S. This section will detail how a 5S initiative focusing on a plant’s Preventive Maintenance (PM) Program can immediately unlock resources within that maintenance department and make the PM process significantly more effective and efficient. Part 2 will look at the Deadly Wastes (Muda) of manufacturing and how elimination of these wastes is also a focus of the reliability process. Part 3 will discuss the overall objectives of Lean Manufacturing and parallel them with the overall objectives of the reliability process. Part 4 will discuss Poka- Yoke (mistake proofing) and see how several standard maintenance techniques are, in fact, Poka-Yoke techniques. A brief discussion of Kaizen and how both Lean Manufacturing and Maintenance and Reliability initiatives share these very same goals and objectives will summarize the entire report.

Introduction
Several quality improvement process tools and techniques exist. They include Lean thinking, Value stream process mapping, Kaizen (The Japanese word for Continuous Improvement), Five Ss (separate, straighten, scrub, standardize, systematize), Kanban Primary and Task Response. In this paper, different strategies or philosophies for quality improvement in business shall be discussed. The tools and techniques that shall be compared are: Lean thinking, Kaizen and Five Ss (separate, straighten, scrub, standardize, systematize)
Comparison
All the techniques aim at improving quality of production processes. They involve the production units and department. All need planning and allocation of resources strategically.
Contrasting
Kaizen is a Japanese word for Continuous Improvement. The philosophy states that everything can be improved continuously. It involves employees in the improvement of quality processes. Workers give their feedback on the criteria and important reviewing issues in the performance of workers, supervisors and managers alike. It bases on many suggestions from employees from all ranks in the organisation. They are expected to consider and implement them with a key goal of improving managerial performance. The system encourages workers to provide suggestion, fosters employee education so that they are informed about improvement, and lastly it encourages employee efficiency (Pinto et al., 2018).
Lean Thinking on the other hand is a technique of quality process improvement aims at improving productivity, quality and lead-time reduction in order to support growth and competitiveness. It involves continuous improvement of the processes and relationships of employees through proven systematic methods, which reduce waste and maximise on customer value. It follows Plan, Do, Check, and Act systematic method. The system achieves low cost productivity, reduce waste, quick response to customer needs and high-quality production (Vlachos, 2015).
Moreover, the Five S's (5S) tools and techniques improves the work place, making it clean, safe, organised and uncluttered thus reducing waste and increase productivity. It builds both mental and physical quality work place (Urick et al., 2018).
The best quality process improvement tool or technique for my project is the 5Ss. This is because it is systematic and aims at making working environment of high quality, improves productivity, makes wastage low, increase employee morale, reduces cost of operation and improves safety (Urick et al., 2018).
Conclusion
In conclusion, tools and techniques for improving quality processes are key in any project. Thought they focus on diverse issues, the 5Ss seems to cover most aspects that increases quality production processes.

manufacturing environment is
essential to maintaining and
exceeding customer expectations, for
positive brand enforcement whilst
ensuring regulatory compliance.
But, as a quality expert, you
already know this.
3. Are you, taking all the steps
necessary in ensuring the
performance of your people,
your processes and your
systems is at its highest
standard at all times?
But does everyone else?
4. Take a look at our ‘Quality
Management Checklist’ and see
what improvements could make
your life as a quality expert
easier!
Do you count down the hours,
hoping that everything goes to
plan, everyone does what they are
supposed to do and nothing
untoward happens?
6. It is essential that affected products are
identified quickly and accurately, but eliminating
these common quality problems completely
and reducing the number of defect products
can encourage a healthier bottom line.
Are all of your products sent out with the
knowledge that it is a safe, well produced
product, suitable for customer consumption?
7. Do you have the ability to identify all parts, materials, and
components that created a final product?
The ability to track, trace and record the genealogy of raw
materials and Work In Progress (WIP) throughout each
stage of the production process and product life-cycle is
imperative.
The ability to track and trace a product from ‘Farm to Fork’
will lead to increased product quality, safety, transparency
and greater recall responsiveness, full genealogy will help
eliminate the risk of cross contamination between batches.
8. Product Genealogy will reduce the cost of
product recall and the damaging affects to
brand reputation caused by poor quality products. Having
accurate genealogy and traceability ensures that recalls can be
targeted quickly, efficiently and
then contained before it is shipped further down the supply
chain, reducing the impact of the recall.
Hopefully you will never have to deal with a product
recall, but you need to have the confidence that if one
did occur, it would be dealt with swiftly and efficiently, minimising
damage.

a high level of scrap and giveaway?
High scrap levels can lead to high material costs
and lost production time making parts, which
aren’t saleable.
Determining current scrap rates and the main
causes of scrap is the first step to managing it
Set goals for improvement and educate
everyone as to what those goals are
11. Questions to ask yourself…
Are the raw materials you are using, the standard you
expect them to be at? It is pointless using cheaper
materials if the scrap value is greater
than the cost savings.
Are people trained properly to handle the raw
materials and the production process?
Vast reductions in waste can be made simply by
educating folk on handling, storing and the
correct production processes.
If the answer to these questions is no, then you need
to produce a business case for procurement and an
action plan to get your staff up to scratch.
12. Reduced scrap levels can save time, reduce interruptions to the
production cycle times – and ultimately result in the production of
higher quality products first time round

packaging material mix ups is vital to
avoiding cross contamination and costly
product recalls.
Do you have a platform to monitor and
manage quality issues, such as mix up
prevention? It can help standardise local
and global quality processes in order to

and controlled.

16. Do your employees know the business KPI
targets?
Do they have targets which contribute to the
business goals?
Are they able to strive for Continuous
Improvement within the workplace?
All KPI targets should be visible to all
management and operators.
17. Display these alongside their own achievements and it
will inspire them to continuously improve their
performance to hit their monthly KPI targets, and those
of the business.
This also allows operators to understand
their own development needs alongside
the businesses needs.
19. Ensure all systems in operation are
regularly monitored and checked
throughout the day for quality
production output.
As businesses grow and more
products lines are added,
sometimes the systems do not
grow with them. Are your systems
fit for purpose?
Do any of your systems need
upgrading to ensure maximum
quality is being produced at the
correct rate?
21. Do you have processes that you go through on a daily basis? How
effective and efficient are they?
You need to take a hard look at current processes:
How your workers go about their job with your manufacturing
equipment
Is there room for improvement with your manufacturing
equipment
Are you using machine parts that are defective? Or
unnecessary?
