WHAT ARE THE 5S PRACTICES ?
 5S system is a lean manufacturing tool designed to improve
productivity through
Organisation,Identification,Maintenance and
sustainability
Sort
Set in
order
ShineStandardize
Sustain
INTRODUCTION TO 5S PRACTICES
 Sort: Remove Unnecessary items from the work
area.
 Set in Order: Set things in proper place for quick
retreival and storage.
 Shine: Clean the workplace.Everyone should be a
janitor.
 Standardize: Assign Tasks and create Schedules so
Everyone knows their responsibilities.
 Sustain: Make it a way of life,this means
commitment towards a long term goal.
APPLICATION TO A GROCERY STORE
 A grocery store is a complicated business and
needs proper management to increase its
productivity
 Proper application of 5S ensures a good
management.
 Also poor practices can lead to problems which are
described further
EFFECTS OF POOR 5S PRACTICES
 1) Sort:
 If Expired Products are kept in the store Customers
might buy them due to ignorance leading to Health
Hazards leading to further problems.
 If unnecessarily Higher Quantity of stock is ordered
much of it may get wasted due to which the store
may incur Economic losses,also its storage and
disposal add to the problems.
 Solution to poor practices of sort
 Order only the required of stock by predicting the
customer demand for a particular product
 Always check for the Expired products and dispose
them safely
 Check whether the product can be recycled or reused
after usage and undertake the required steps
 Tag the items with appropriate colours representing
some message
2) SET IN ORDER
 Customer dissatisfaction if the things are not easily
accessible.
 Wastage of time and increased Chaos
 Ease of finding items decreases.
 Stock may pile up
 Solution to the above problems:
 Proper Division of various sections with name plates
and directions.
 Brandwise distribution of items for ease of shopping.
 Frequently visited Sections should be checked regularly
3) SHINE
 If Food section is not kept clean it may lead to action of
pests deteriorating the quality and leading to health
hazards
 Customer dissatisfaction due to unclean Environment
 Presence of rats and insects may lead to damage of the
items in the store
 Foul smell may lead to discomfort
 Solution
 Every Employee should contribute towards Cleanliness
of the store.
 Proper management of products which are prone to
disturb the cleanliness.
 Use clean brooms,water,insecticides to clean the store
 Store should be cleaned periodically.
Presence of rats pose a big threat
4)STANDARDIZE
 Increased Chaos and wastage of time.
 Energy wastage
 No proper Maintenance
 Poor management
 Solution
 Have a visual control over the whole place
 Proper standardisation leads to safer better and faster
operations
 Have a troubleshooting process for every possible
problem
 Train the empolyees for managing their respective tasks
5)SUSTAIN
 Employees maybe unaware of the proper details of a
service
 Lack of management
 Lack of communication between employees leading to
further problems
 The company might not survive the competition with
other companies
 Solution
 Make sure the information is properly communicated
 Train all employees
 Obtain support from all levels of work area
 Evaluate the program on regular basis

designed to improve operational excellence making
the workplace safer and more pleasant
 The Benefits of 5S are
 Reduction in wasted time
 Reduction in required space
 Improved self discipline
 Improved culture
 Your actions have the desired effect if u follow 5S
practices properly.

  • 2. WHAT ARE THE 5S PRACTICES ?  5S system is a lean manufacturing tool designed to improve productivity through Organisation,Identification,Maintenance and sustainability Sort Set in order ShineStandardize Sustain
  • 3. INTRODUCTION TO 5S PRACTICES  Sort: Remove Unnecessary items from the work area.  Set in Order: Set things in proper place for quick retreival and storage.  Shine: Clean the workplace.Everyone should be a janitor.  Standardize: Assign Tasks and create Schedules so Everyone knows their responsibilities.  Sustain: Make it a way of life,this means commitment towards a long term goal.
  • 4. APPLICATION TO A GROCERY STORE  A grocery store is a complicated business and needs proper management to increase its productivity  Proper application of 5S ensures a good management.  Also poor practices can lead to problems which are described further
  • 5. EFFECTS OF POOR 5S PRACTICES  1) Sort:  If Expired Products are kept in the store Customers might buy them due to ignorance leading to Health Hazards leading to further problems.  If unnecessarily Higher Quantity of stock is ordered much of it may get wasted due to which the store may incur Economic losses,also its storage and disposal add to the problems.
  • 6.  Solution to poor practices of sort  Order only the required of stock by predicting the customer demand for a particular product  Always check for the Expired products and dispose them safely  Check whether the product can be recycled or reused after usage and undertake the required steps  Tag the items with appropriate colours representing some message
  • 7. 2) SET IN ORDER  Customer dissatisfaction if the things are not easily accessible.  Wastage of time and increased Chaos  Ease of finding items decreases.  Stock may pile up  Solution to the above problems:  Proper Division of various sections with name plates and directions.  Brandwise distribution of items for ease of shopping.  Frequently visited Sections should be checked regularly
  • 8. 3) SHINE  If Food section is not kept clean it may lead to action of pests deteriorating the quality and leading to health hazards  Customer dissatisfaction due to unclean Environment  Presence of rats and insects may lead to damage of the items in the store  Foul smell may lead to discomfort  Solution  Every Employee should contribute towards Cleanliness of the store.  Proper management of products which are prone to disturb the cleanliness.  Use clean brooms,water,insecticides to clean the store  Store should be cleaned periodically.

  • 10. 4)STANDARDIZE  Increased Chaos and wastage of time.  Energy wastage  No proper Maintenance  Poor management  Solution  Have a visual control over the whole place  Proper standardisation leads to safer better and faster operations  Have a troubleshooting process for every possible problem  Train the empolyees for managing their respective tasks
  • 11. 5)SUSTAIN  Employees maybe unaware of the proper details of a service  Lack of management  Lack of communication between employees leading to further problems  The company might not survive the competition with other companies  Solution  Make sure the information is properly communicated  Train all employees  Obtain support from all levels of work area  Evaluate the program on regular basis

LEARNING BY THE TEAM  5S is a waste reduction and productivity system designed to improve operational excellence making the workplace safer and more pleasant  The Benefits of 5S are  Reduction in wasted time  Reduction in required space  Improved self discipline  Improved culture  Your actions have the desired effect if u follow 5S practices properly.
