4. The Fifth Amendment And The Rights During Arrest, Trial,...
No matter what the crime is, the Constitution is supposed to help protect the accused s rights during
arrest, trial, and sentencing. The Sixth Amendment clearly states that In all criminal prosecutions, the
accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial, by an impartial jury of the state and district
wherein the crime shall have been committed... and to have the assistance of counsel for his defense .
If the accused is found to be guilty, the Eighth Amendment is there to protect us from the possibility of
cruel and unusual punishment. This is something as an American we all expect and we all assume is
what happens, but what if you re a minority, or have a mental impairment and you re facing the death
penalty, can you expect the same rights? Recent studies have shown that while the use of the death
penalty have gone down over the years since it was reinstated in 1976, there is still a staggering
number of statics showing inequality in the application of its use. A law professor from the University
of Iowa, David C. Baldus and two colleagues published a study not long after the reinstatement of the
death penalty in 1976 (Dow, 2011). In this study it looked at over 2,000 homicide cases just within
Georgia alone beginning in 1972, what they found was startling (Dow, 2011). Baldus found that black
defendants were 1.7 times more likely to be given the death penalty than white defendants and those
who murdered white victims were actually 4.3 times more apt to be

5. Christian College Freshmen Should Make Time For A Daily Bible
College can be a very difficult adjustment for freshman to make, especially for freshmen that are
believers in Christ. While the struggles and evils of the world bare down on them, students need a
source of fulfillment and safety. That can be found within a daily study of the bible. Christian college
freshmen should make time for a daily bible study so that they may grow closer with the Lord, get
help and guidance for life, and reach a deeper understanding of what the bible says so they can defend
against attacks. A daily bible study plays a major part for college freshman to grow closer to Christ.
God set the bible as the main source for revealing Himself. The bible is His love letter to all humans,
and by reading and studying it every day, they can start to truly understand God s great character and
His great love. God s character is revealed within the bible s pages; it tells of His great majesty and
grandeur. If students do not dive into the word, they will miss how holy and perfect He is. Christ s
ultimate sacrifice is also explained multiple times in the bible. He demonstrated His great love for us
by dying on a cross, defeating sin, and rising from the grave. He did all of this to save His creation, so
they may come live with Him. Christians who do not study the bible can take His sacrifice for granted
so easily. Freshmen must understand what Christ did for them and know how great their Lord is.
Students can grow closer to Christ through prayer as well. God has given

7. The Cultural Context Of Franz Kafka s Metamorphosis
In our interactive Oral we discussed about Franz Kafka s Metamorphosis, through point of time and
place matter, the relation to the society, the culture and experience and the technique in the work, I
learned about the society oppressive expectation can lead an individual to loss in identity
I originally pictured the choice that Gregor chose to work is because of the feudalistic ideas of his
family, and the rule of the society makes the difference in individual self awareness. However through
our class discussion surrounding the time and place matters, i realized that the Gregor felt he has to
work because he lives in that area that makes him think it is his responsibilities to labor for his family.
While we researched the background information about Franz Kafka, we come to the result that the
reason why Gregor doesn t like to work, it is because in the period of Kafka exist, and where he wrote
the book, which is limited by the rule of society and the rigorous control from his father. ... Show

people has totally difference perspective, when the teenager read this book, they will put more
expectation and hope on the society. Inversely when elder people read the book, they will consider the
society as a competition, it is normal that there is a situation could happen just like what happens to

8. The Role Of Gender During The Renaissance Period
A critical point in European history was the Renaissance period, which took place between 1300 1700.
The term Renaissance stands for rebirth , and in this context refers to the increased interest that was
taken in learning from Greek and Roman classical writing. Recent exploration by historians into the
Renaissance period has seen a fixation on the discussion of the role of gender during the Renaissance.
A variety of historians, such as Joan Kelly and Merry E. Weisner, believe that women didn t
experience any form of a Renaissance during this period. It can be widely acknowledged that during
this period society did experience a rebirth , especially in terms of the role of the men in Europe.
Women, on the other hand, weren t as fortunate. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As a result, women didn t have a renaissance in terms of the way people regarded them, as attitudes
regarding women from the middle ages continued right through the Renaissance.
The second area that saw the littlest change for women in the Renaissance was the expectations that
came with their social status. Overall women were deemed to be a lower class in terms of gender, and
men often treated them with less respect as a result. Within social classes, stereotypical beliefs
regarding women and their role were held. Lower class women were expected to be housewives and
take care of everything to do with the house. The expectation of working class women, however, was
slightly different. They were expected to work for their husbands and help them run their business,
although they couldn t partake in any of the work by themselves or outside of the house. However, this
different expectation wasn t necessarily new and was upheld from previous times, supporting this idea
of women not receiving a Renaissance in the area of social class. Some women in the elite were able
to become slightly more independent from their husbands and gain more responsibility, but the vast
majority of women in the Renaissance continued to be used for the sole benefits of the men; as
providers of a dowry, homemakers

9. Women s Reproductive Rights and Freedoms
Women s reproductive rights are legal rights and freedoms pertaining to reproduction and reproductive
health. One can expect reproductive rights to include the following topics: the right to birth control,
the right to legal abortion, the right to education and access so that properly informed choices can be
made and the right to access good quality reproductive healthcare. The women s reproductive rights
and freedoms movement move far beyond the topic of the abortion movement alone, there are also
debates that include forced sterilization abuse and population control when looking at the subject of
reproductive rights. Throughout history, women have had their right to abortion taken away and have
even been sterilized without their permission because they were mentally handicapped or just because
they were not the dominant race because eugenicists wanted greater procreation by the middle class
women of European descent. Women have had to endure an abundant amount of abuse to their
reproductive rights and freedoms, from having their right to abortion taken away to being wrongfully
sterilized; women have had to fight for their rights that should have never been abused in the first
place. This term paper will outline the history of the reproductive rights movement, the abortion
movement, as well as discuss how women have been wrongfully forced into sterilization.

Canadian identity and history is grounded in the culture and the traditions of the Aboriginal peoples.
Popularly known as being the first inhabitants of Canada, Aboriginals strive to enrich the country s
cultural mosaic through their existence and thus are an integral part of this nation. Although
Aboriginals are deemed as an important part of the Canadian social fabric today, history (past and
present) documents a contrasting image to this ideology where it is coloured by the economic, social,
and physical hardships of Aboriginal societies in Canada. Scarred by the social and racial injustices of
the past, Aboriginal education is a major continuing issue with regards to minority education in
Canada. According to J. P. White and Dan Beavon (2009), Aboriginal educational attainment lags

In effort to improve these education attainment rates as well as to improve the quality of learning

Aboriginal history and culture. In support, McKeough et al. (2008), affirms this notion as well: It is
through the telling of stories and legends that First Nations people preserve what is most important to
them language, traditions, culture, and identity. Stories are used to provide a sociocultural and
historical account of the community knowledge from elders to youth, ensuring its survival with new
generations (p. 150). Many Aboriginal students find it difficult to learn and grasp concepts due to the

12. An Island Of The Pelicans ( Williams, 2016 ) Essay
Alcatraz was first discovered in 1775 by a spanish explorer, Juan Manuel del Ayala, which he named
the Island of the Pelicans (Williams, 2016). Alcatraz is now a national landmark established in the
1930 s. The renowned island located in the bay of San Francisco, California. During the 1930 s crimes
and gangs increased in an alarming rate due to the effects of The Great Depression (Williams, 2016).
Many crimes and gangs rose also when many laws were passed and put many behind bars (Raaphorst,
71). Donna Raaphorst, author of The History Of An Island Prison: From The Development To An
American Myth , states
In l932, the Threatening Communications Act and the Kidnapping Act passed. In l933, a new law
made it a federal crime to assault or kill a federal officer. The National Firearms Act, the National
Bank Robber Act, the Anti Racketeering Act, the Fugitive Felon Act, and the National Stolen Property
Act all passed in l934. Such legislation increased the role of the federal government in crime control
(Raaphorst,71).
Many notorious criminals were incarcerated and with many attempted to escape, Alcatraz was calling
for all inmates who were too hard to handle. There were existing penitentiaries where they had
dangerous convicts who wouldn t abide to the rules and had the continuous mindset to plan an escape
(Raaphorst, 2016). The United State s government realized that something needed to change and
formed a different approach of dealing with all the felons. Alcatraz Federal

13. Capital Punishment Is The Ultimate Punishment
Have you ever thought of the person next to you is a killer or a rapist? If he is, what would you want
from the government if he had killed someone you know? He should receive the capital punishment.
The capital punishment is the ultimate punishment given to the precarious crimes. It is the last stage of
capital punishment. There are different methods of like hanging, electric chair, lethal injection, firing
squad, gas chamber. Murderers and rapist should be given extreme punishment, and they have to pay
for their wrongdoing. We can observe crime rates are accelerating day by day. The government should
enforce such laws to create a high alert around the society and endorse a secure ruling to its people.
But before talking about the essential role of a death penalty, we have to think about the meaning and
purpose of any punishment. According to Muhlhausen, 67% of American favor the death for these
convicted of murder, while 28 percent are opposed, which shows that there are still more people who
believe that capital punishment is the best way to reduce the crime rates. Capital punishment is the
best answer to murder and final warning which all that would be criminals fear. Similarly, it helps to
solve the overcrowding problems and provide closure for victims. Criminals fear death penalty so it
can be a final warning so that we can solve overcrowding problems and provide closure for victims.

17. Why Schools ShouldnT Have Homework
The American School System Shouldn t Have Homework
Schools in America shouldn t have homework. It has been proven to not help with test scores or
school work, but what it does help with, is lowering students health. I believe that schools should
assign little or no homework, It does little to help and more to hurt the students. For instance, most
students don t have computers and are financially unable to get one. This is unfair and can cause the
student to be behind on their schoolwork. Another reason is that students are so loaded with
schoolwork and other family/friend activities that they don t have enough time to do what they really
need to. Lastly, the Finnish school system has shorter school days, more recess, and starts at the age of
7. Yet, it has been proven that they get one of the highest test scores internationally. First, there s the
case where students aren t able to afford a computer. This causes to affect their grades, school learning
experience, and their mental health poorly. Most students have parents or guardians that constantly
want them to get good grades and when that isn t possible some students don t take it very easily.
Another thing is that it can hurt their grades because now in most schools their system relies greatly
on computers. Teachers use computers for assigning homework, being able to research topics in class,
and giving weekly assignments that are made to be done at home also. This can make a student
become behind in

Westernization is the result of the contact between western and non western cultures. Beginning in the
fifteenth century and playing out until the nineteenth century, colonialism and neo imperialism by
means of the Euro Atlantic economy s authority, played a major part in the spread of western culture.
For example, even after decolonizing and becoming their own countries with their own governance,
many former colonies adopted aspects of western politics, even if they firmly opposed other aspects of
western culture. Twentieth century and twenty first century globalization took various forms. In the
1950s, there was accelerated postwar globalization through American and European multinational
corporations, like McDonald s and mcdonaldization throughout the world. Then, beginning in 1970,
the rise of industrializing economies meant the international division of labor, with low wage and high
wage zones, and in the 1980s, the United States took on an important role in neoliberal globalization
through the Washington Consensus, a reform package designed by Washington D.C. comprised of a
set of specific economic policy prescriptions for critically economically unstable developing
countries, the International Monetary Fund (IMF), and the World Bank. In 2000, globalization was
heightened through the emergence of the economies of countries including India, China, Brazil, and
Russia (the BRICs). In recent decades, as opposed to during colonial and recent post colonial times,

William Golding, there is one group of boys on an island. The boys elect one chief, Ralph, but another
bigun thinks he s a better chief. So the other boy, Jack, leaves and forms a new tribe with most of the
boys. After a little bit of time, the groups start to fight resulting in a couple of deaths. Why would
people follow a corrupt leader like Jack? They follow them because they feel like the new leader can
help them better than the old one, they think that the leader can provide for them and it doesn t matter
who that leader is, they will follow them because there s no one else to follow.
One reason that people will follow a corrupt leader is that the people will look for anyone else to leave
them other than their current leader. All at once, Robert was screaming and struggling with the
strength of the frenzy. Jack had him by the hair and was brandishing a knife behind him was Roger,
fighting to get close. The chant rose ritually, as at the last moment of a dance or a hunt (114) Even
though Jack was hurting one of his friends they still wanted to follow him because he could protect
them and Ralph could not. Jack

25. Benefits Of Illegal Migrant Workers
Once working in the U.S., undocumented migrant laborers are perfectly exploitable. Because they are
not citizens or on work visas, they essentially have no rights in the minds of some farms. Farms may
provide poor quality housing, but no other work benefits. Agriculture doesn t have to pay hourly
minimum wage, so instead workers are paid by piece rate: employment in which a worker is paid a
fixed rate for each unit produced no matter the time invested. In some areas, farms make it appear that
they are paying laborers minimum wage by requiring laborers to pick enough produce to equal a full
day s pay. Over exhaustion induced by this is typically untreated because of the lack of proper medical
care available to migrant workers; either because of personal funds, or ignorant lenses through which
doctors view Mexican migrant patients (Holmes, 2013, p. 113). Then if a laborer expresses any issues
to their employers, employers will use the labor s undocumented status against them. Essentially, they
ll threaten the laborer with deportation if the laborer were to make any action against the farm because
of labor rights violations first hand manipulation of the social divides of labor.
Yet, if the conditions of this job are so poor, and the laborers severely exploited, why do people still
choose to make the dangerous journey? The answer is documented in Fresh Fruit, Broken Bodies by
Seth Holmes. After spending time working and living with Mexican migrant laborers to better

26. An Unxamined Life Is Not Worth Living
Philosophy is about questioning everything in life in the world we live in. Without the questioning and
wondering in life then philosophy would be worthless. The great philosopher Socrates acknowledge
this and therefore he would wonder everything in life making him a wise man not because he knew
everything but because what ever wisdom he has comes from his knowledge that he knows nothing.
After Socrates being sentenced to death penalty for corrupting the young, by not believing in the gods
in which the city believed in. During the trial Socrates claimed an unexamined life is not worth living .
Making it one of the biggest influence for everybody in today s world. Many philosophers have given
a lot of that on what he may had tried to say in which ended made the inference that for Socrates
living meant to be able to question everything around him. With that being said an examined life
would be to be precautious with all your decisions and to question everything in our surroundings to
have knowledge and that kind of life would be worth living. In today s life we live in world full of
decisions in which it helps it shape our whole world. One bad decision and your whole life could
change. Therefore, questioning all our decision sounds like the most equitable thing to do since we
would be making conscious ethical decisions. Which is why an unexamined life would not be worth
living since you would be living a life in which you never really end up learning from all your
mistakes.

My understanding of the Lincoln Electric Company s culture
An organization s culture consists of unseen elements such as assumptions and values that affect
organizational life, it is the personality of the company. At Lincoln Electric, even though they never
had a formal organization chart, the culture is an extremely significant aspect of everyday life and a
powerful asset; its unique and hard to imitate conceptualization gives the firm an undeniable
competitive advantage and insures maximum flexibility.
Over the decades and since it was first created, the ongoing guidance and encouragement of the
management towards their employees made Lincoln s expansion possible to a global level. The ideas
and philosophy of the founders are still at the core of the organizational culture because they strongly
supported the company in its initial stages and helped distinguish it from others. Thus, by providing a
competitive advantage, these values were retained as part of the corporate culture and were taught to
new members as the right way to do business.
The principles and ideas in which James F. Lincoln believed and that brought him his success are still
those that drive the current Board of Directors and employees every day.

of his organization; it remains at the center of everybody s attention and is reflected in Lincoln s

28. Mahatma Gandhi And The Indian Independence Movement
When we hear the word India , the first thing that comes to mind is Mahatma Gandhi. The word
Mahatma is a literal translation to: great sage, a saint, a person to be considered as a messiah (Gandhi,
2011, P4). Descriptions such as freedom fighter, warrior for justice and activist are just three popular
terms that describe Mohandas Gandhi today. But are all these descriptions true? Mahatma Gandhi is
revered by mainstream opinion as a Jesus like figure. The media and in particular, Richard
Attenborough (Gandhi 1982), portray Mohandas as the epitome of perseverance, peace and courage.
On the contrary, the film Gandhi, is a shockingly one sided depiction of the Indian independence
movement, which fails to accurately depict history and correctly acknowledge the unnecessary loss of
life caused in the process. Evidence today emphatically refute claims of Gandhi s egalitarian and pious
persona with several historical sources and texts detailing his hypocrisy, stubbornness and blatant
perversions of equality.
Through the film Gandhi, Attenborough depicts the life and role of Mohandas Gandhi in India s bid
for independence from the British. The film is set as a complete flashback of a 24 year old Gandhi
travelling to South Africa in a class coach to his assassination in New Delhi, 1948. It is evident from
the film, that Attenborough mainly focuses on the positive biography of Gandhi to mould his anti
imperialist narrative whilst omitting the sacrifice of the Indian people.

Throughout generations, humans have played organized games and sports. For that same amount of

30. Persuasive Essay On Chimney Cleaning
All across Johannesburg and Pretoria, majority of homeowners depend on the heat from fireplaces to
keep their family warm during the winter season. As such, it is very important to keep the fireplace
working optimally by ensuring you have a clean chimney. Regrettably, if you do not have your
chimney cleaned it can lead to many major issues. Majority of these issues can be avoided by simply
scheduling a periodic chimney cleaning with a professional. By having your chimney cleaned, you
give it adequate air combustion, thereby resulting to clean burning fire.
How To Tell If You Need a Chimney Cleaning
The main purpose of a chimney is to allow smoke and carbon monoxide to exit your home. This will
allow you to delight in the benefits of a fire with neither of the risks. While many chimney sweeps
recommend that you have your chimney cleaned at least once in a year, sometimes it may need more
than that.
Factors like type of wood burned and how regularly you use your fireplace play a role in determining
how often your chimney should be cleaned. But that s not all, there are also some tell tale signs that let
you know when your chimney needs a cleaning. They include:
*Too much smoke filling the room once the fire is lit.
*Bad odors or a rush of cold air emitting from your chimney when you are not using your fireplace or
stove.
*Your fire not burning brightly as usual or the fire starting very slowly.
*If your chimney is filled with nests, leaves, small animals and other debris.

31. Pre Screening For Disabilities And Genetic Enhancement
Pre screening for disabilities and genetic enhancement are vital factors in the decision to place
restrictions for selective genetic abortion. All human life should be of equal worth, supporting the
ideal that life and death decisions for seriously compromised newborns should not be based on the
quality of life (CITE 3). Screening for genetic diseases through the use of in vitro fertilization, or IVF,
limits and excludes those with disabilities from our society, exposing limits on morality. These include
transgression of divine laws, transgression of natural laws, introduction of an unacceptable risk of
harm, introduction of a threat to genetic diversity, introduction of a threat to one s common genetic
heritage, paradoxical counterproductively, a misuse of social resources, a widened gap between the
haves and have nots , promotion of social conformity and homogeneity, and lastly undermining free
choice (Fisher, 2013). From these points it is important to recognize the impact it has upon our society,
and how we perceive, and behave towards those with a disability. The practise of introducing selective
abortion through the use of IVF and genetic testing will create a hostile environment going forward
into the future for those who escape detection before birth. This will cause potential discrimination
against those with a disability, making them liable to be looked down upon by the community and
unfit to be alive (Fisher, 2013). Thus this can create a second class or even a

Imagine living in a perfect world where people can do what they want with their life; a world without
discrimination, where art is just as important as math. Well, it s not going to happen. At least not in the
next century. The lack of accessibility of the American dream is especially apparent in the essay by
Kesaya Noda, The Four Freedoms by Franklin Roosevelt, Veterans Day: Never Forget Their Duty
from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, and an excerpt from The Newsroom . The American dream is
inaccessible to the majority of people in America. In the story, a hyphenated American, a Japanese
American girl is segregated due
To her race: I can see myself today as a person historically defined by law and custom as being forever
alien. Being neither free white, nor African, our people in California were deemed aliens, ineligible for
citizenship no matter how long the intended to stay here. Aliens ineligible for citizenship were
prohibited from owning, buying, or leasing land (Noda). Due to the stereotypes and racism caused by
being a minority in America, she is limited in what she can do and therefore cannot achieve what is
perceived to be the American dream. Noda expresses how her parents were discriminated against, how
they never had the opportunity to achieve the American dream because other people didn t view them
as equals when she says our parents were painted as hard workers who were socially uncomfortable
and had difficulty expressing even the smallest opinion. Clean, quiet, motivated, and determined to

country. That perfect life where nobody had to worry about personal and economical safety. When
Franklin Roosevelt wrote The Four Freedoms , the American dream is what he was writing about. In

Robert s being open to new things impresses the husband, and this is evident when the husband and

Seeing is believing, or in this case, not seeing is believing.

Human Wisdom
There are many different concepts and thoughts that can be taken from Plato s The Apology. It is my
personal opinion that Socrates views on wisdom, or more specifically, human wisdom, are among the
most paramount of points that should be taken and understood by the reader. Throughout his defense,
Socrates uses the concept of human wisdom (or the lack thereof) as an argument for his acquittal.
According to Socrates human wisdom has little value, and the only reason he is wiser than most men
is because he knows that he lacks human wisdom. Throughout the apology it would seem that wisdom

Socrates begins by discussing why his previous accusers accused him of what he did. I will try to
show you what has caused this reputation and slander...is none other than a certain kind of wisdom
(20d, 23a). His next point on human wisdom, is that it is not very valuable; That one of you, O human
beings, is wisest who, like Socrates, has become cognizant that in truth he is worth nothing with
respect to wisdom (23b). Socrates still believes however, that thinking about and examining wisdom is
extremely important to live a fulfilling life.
This first type of wisdom seems to be a concept of using wisdom as way to care for the soul.
I men of Athens, salute you and love you, but I will obey the god rather than you, and as long as I
draw breath and am able, I shall not cease to practice philosophy, to exhort you and in my usual way

Building construction is not an act of nature, and it typically is not a very environmentally friendly
activity. Every decision the architect and the engineer make throughout the development process; from
smaller scale constructions such as farm lands, parks, single housing units, and sewage system to a
larger scale such as facilities, power plants, multi family units, bridges, and highways, will have a very
close and direct impact to the environment directly and indirectly. In order to achieve a better standard
for the living quality without causing further burdens and negative impacts to the planet earth, the
ways to manage these major environmental impacts from the construction need to be strongly
enforced. Existing researches have suggested that construction sector is one of the largest pollution
contributors in our current society due to poor design strategies and usage of wrong materials and
technologies. These impacts are typically classified as on site and off site construction activities. On
site activities include the actual construction of a physical facility, causing air pollution, water and soil
pollution, waste pollution, noise pollution, and traffic pollution. Off site activities are more focusing
on the relationship between the pollution to the mining and manufacturing of the materials, and the
transportations of the materials. To prevent these issues, more and more people have begun to look

43. Analysis Of Ralph Waldo Emerson s Self Reliance
Ralph Waldo Emerson, a loyal follower of transcendentalism and writer of several debatable essays,
supports the idea of one following his or her own conscience instead of the restrictions of society s
mind. Transcendentalism, an American philosophical movement, takes place in the Nineteenth
Century in which transcendentalists break free from the chains bounding them to the repetition of
thought and action. In his essay, Self Reliance, he asserts the importance of independent thinking,
gives clear and concise examples of independent thinkers, and trusting oneself. I agree with Emerson s
emphasis on thinking with initiative in Self Reliance when he conveys the importance of
nonconformity because independent self trust advances society. Emerson believes that fear of others
misunderstanding holds one back from thinking with without consistency. The general public has no
other data for computing other than past acts (Emerson 3). The comparison of thinking to computing
implies the act of thinking as a rote activity without change. Although looking upon past acts may help
better plan for the future, Emerson infers that these people look on these past acts only to repeat them
without modification. Emerson further warns, a foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds

opinion against it. A hobgoblin causes superstitious fear, while at the same time this
