The Rise of Silas Lapham by William Dean Howells Essay
The Rise of Silas Lapham by William Dean Howells
In the novel, The Rise of Silas Lapham, William Dean Howells makes a particular point about the morals of an individual in the business
world. His point is that an individual, such as Silas, must check their morals at the door if they have any plans to make it in the business
world. The novel has always been popular, partly because it presents Lapham s financial and social failure as consciously and deliberately
chosen when he has to decide whether he shall cheat and stay on top in business or tell the truth and fail irrecoverably (Gibson 283). The Rise
of Silas Lapham is a novel that deals with the potential moral corruption of a man by money. The outward signs of Silas Lapham s ... Show

Obviously the pressures of big business would be much tougher to deal with in a big city, like Boston, than in a small rural farm town,
because the competition to be the best is much greater in the urban areas. The time period in which the story is set, the late 1800 s, is also a
crucial part of the puzzle. All throughout the early 1800 s up until the present, big business has been on the rise. When large companies started
setting up in cities, people moved to where the jobs were, and soon small towns became gigantic urban metropolises. The big business is what
ultimately causes Silas moral rise and financial fall, and that is a crucial part of the plot. If the story where set in a different time period it
would not have as big an impact. Also during the late 1800 s, social standing was very important. In those days a person was measured by
their social standing, so it meant everything. The reason this is important is because, interwoven in the main plot is a secondary plot. This
secondary plot has to do with the love triangle between Penelope Lapham, Irene Lapham, and Tom Corey. Everyone seems to think that Tom
and Irene are in love with each other, while in actuality it is Tom and Penelope that are in love. This secondary plot only adds to Silas and
Mrs. Corey s inner struggles. If the story where not set in this time period, the social impact on the plot would also not be as great. Another
aspect of the setting is the house that they currently

Pre Colonial And Colonial Settlements Essay
Pre colonial and Colonial Settlements Pre colonial settlement began in the United States when Paleo Indians, now known as Native
Americans, crossed the Bering Strait, an ice bridge that connected the Eastern and Western Hemisphere. This was a crossover from Russia
into to United States in which large groups began to settle and form a life. Although this large groups would constantly move around, in which
they are known as Nomads, primarily the United States was their new found home. They would endure activities such as fishing and hunting
as basic survival skills. Around 1492, European nations came to the Americas to increase their wealth and broaden their influence over world
affairs. The Spanish were among the first Europeans to explore the New World. (Colonial America, n.d.) This exploration led to more groups
of people travelling to seek a better world. By 1650, however, England had established a dominant presence on the Atlantic coast. The first
colony was founded at Jamestown, Virginia, in 1607. Many of the people who settled in the New World came to escape religious persecution.
The Pilgrims, founders of Plymouth, Massachusetts, arrived in 1620. (Colonial America, n.d.) The claim of the New World was taken by
British settlers, although Native Americans were the first to settle. Native Americans helped to flourish the lands, along with the new settlers.

Human And Social Development Level Of Development
Originally, the proverb what gets measured gets managed is applied to the business field. However, in this essay, the writer tries to explain this
principle in the social development level. At first, this essay argue the reason why we need to measure the level of development, it is because
producing measurements about an activity gives you a handle on it, a way to improve it. This paper goes on to critically examine the varied
ways to measure development. A developed country is one with a high Gross National Income (GNI) per capita, as defined by the World
Bank. But this does not tell the whole story, country s level of development is not a fixed state. In addition to the factors of economic growth,
human and social development also playing an important role. In the end, the advantage and disadvantage of these methods are summarized,
some points need to be studied more are also given. What is development? Measuring development is about how advanced one country is
compared to other countries, or to the same country in the past. But to answer this question, one must first have a conceptual framework about
what development means. Though the term development usually refers to economic growth, it can apply to political, social structure as well.
It is true that economic growth may produce greater income in a country. But history offers a number of example, by increasing nation s
wealth, without improving the average living standard. This happened in oil producing

The Role Of Black Students In Today s Society
In today s society, family has become a very relevant issue amongst Black Canadians. Ideally, Blacks would enjoy having a nuclear family as
most would however, in many cases immigrants often have transnational families which sometimes results in children having single parents.
Not only does this put them at an economic disadvantage, this also leaves children without a true sense of security and family, which
according to Maslow s hierarchy of needs, prohibits them progressing towards meeting all of their needs. Moreover, in the educational realm,
Black students are adversely impacted by the scarcity of identifiable Black role models within their own schools. This in part impacts their
future as Most Black youth have a great deal of trouble

Analysis on the Prologue of the Canterbury Tales by...
In his General Prologue, Geoffrey Chaucer introduces all of his characters to the reader. He writes that there was a group of people who met,
and were all, coincidentally going to Canterbury. In the General Prologue, it is written, Some nine and twenty in a company Of sundry folk
happening then to fall In fellowship, and they were pilgrims all That towards Canterbury meant to ride. The Canterbury Tales is a collection of
the stories that each of these characters tells on the journey. There is a vast assortment of characters. There are men and women from the
Church. There are upper class people with wealth and power. There are blue collar working class people. It is interesting that all different

It is quite interesting to me that as times change, the general idea of beauty changes. The sad thing is that it seems to follow money. Back then,
pale, plump people were seen as more beautiful than skinny, tanned people. Back then, pale skin and a little bit of extra blubber meant that
someone had enough money that they could stay inside and get enough to eat. Now, it seems that the opposite is true. Healthy food is more
expensive than the alternatives such as McDonald s. Having tan skin may mean that a person has enough money to go lay in a coffin looking
thing, get an artificial sunburn, and get nice leathery skin. Who doesn t like leathery skin? Wow, this got off topic quickly. I like the skipper
because he seems like a guy who, while may being not the most intelligent of people, has lots of experiences and interesting stories. I like
people who have been all over the place. They seem to have a unique type of wisdom, and wisdom is sometimes better than intellect. Finally, I
really like the Skipper, according to the description given by Chaucer. He seems like a ridiculously oversized leprechaun. He is a huge guy,
and I definitely would not like to be on his bad side. Chaucer wrote, The Miller was a chap of sixteen stone, A great stout fellow big in brawn
and bone. Most of the introduction to the Miller is spent telling about how huge the man is. That means that he must be a pretty big guy. He

Spider Monkeys Social Behavior
Social Behavior Among Monkeys May Be More Nature Than Nurture
ScienceDaily (Dec. 4, 2003) An unusual experiment with monkeys who were switched between mothers shortly after birth has demonstrated
the importance of nature over nurture in behavior.
Rearing
Young monkeys reared by a mother other than their own are more likely to exhibit the aggressive or friendly behavior of their birth mothers
rather than the behavior of their foster mothers, a University of Chicago researcher has shown for the first time.
The discovery of inheritability of social behavior traits among non human primates has important implications for people as it reinforces other
research that suggests that such characteristics as sociability and impulsive ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

As the thumb is absent in their hands, the Spider monkey s grooming is not as developed as in other primates. They scratch themselves with

It is said that the barks of spider monkeys are much worse than their bites. The crazy behavior of Spider monkeys is intended solely to
frighten the prowler and is merely a bluff. Moreover, spider monkeys only intimidate human beings only if they have not had a brush with

A Brief Note On Air Traffic Control ( Atc ) Essay
4.3 VARIOUS MODULES OF DLCA 6500 : 4.3.1 Air Traffic Controller(ATC) Air traffic control (ATC) is a service provided by ground
based controllers who direct aircraft on the ground and in the air. The primary purpose of ATC systems is to handle the aircraft downlinks and
ground station uplinks. The pilot sends some downlink messages by using MKP (Multi Functional Keypad), CCP(Cursor Control panel) in
AM. The pilot will confirm the message by pressing SEND in AFD and it will come to ATC after pressing SEND function in AFD.RIU will
then send the message to one of the existing radios (HF, SATCOM or VHF, with the selection of the radio based on special logic contained
within the RIU). For a message to be sent over the VHF network, the radio would transmit the VHF signals containing the downlink message.
This message is then received by a VHF Remote Ground Station .ATC may use a radar system called Secondary Surveillance Radar to
downlink flight parameters allowing radar processing: systems and therefore controllers to see various data on a flight, including airframe
unique id (24 bits encoded), indicated airspeed and flight director selected level, amongst others.Any aircraft is required to have clearance
from Ground Control. This is normally done via VHF/UHF radio. Figure 4(b): Air Traffic Controller (ATN CM page) Figure 4(c): Air Traffic

Why Reality Shows Can Be Entertaining and Offensive
How Reality Shows Can Be Offensive and Entertaining While some reality shows can be offensive, I am somewhat entertained by other
reality shows. Reality TV usually consists of people making complete fools of themselves or just trying to get their 15 minutes of fame.
Although, some people, like Jon Gosselin and Elisabeth Hasselbeck have become quite famous this way. There are some that center on
celebrities and others that follow everyday people. I think the reality shows that star actual celebrities, like Celebrity Apprentice and Dancing
with the Stars, are offensive because the celebrities on these shows already have money and they go on the shows and get paid for their time.
Celebrity Fit Club, in my opinion, is the most ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

that was a bust of her head. They also made a cake modeled after a toilet for a plumber that was retiring. They even allowed some children
from Make a Wish foundation to come in and make some cakes of their own and then the bakers surprised the kids with a large cake for a
foundation party. Reality shows can be both entertaining and offensive, depending on the plots and themes of the shows. I like many of them,
while others I think they could do without. For some reason, the more offensive shows get high ratings so they keep coming back for more

The Myers Briggs Personality Test

thought you could. My personality falls under ESTJ, which stands for extraverted, sensing, thinking, judging. ESTJ s are usually hard workers
that use logic and tradition to complete things efficiently while staying organized. They tend to be very stable people that remain loyal,
dependable, and active. They enjoy creating things around the house, volunteering in the community, as well as watching and playing sports.
ESTJ s are known to be great leaders, often times employed as an engineer, doctor, manager, consultant, technician, or agriculturist. I agree
that I am an extraverted person because I enjoy being with others. Although I do like my occasional me time, I prefer to be spending time with
friends and family. Another reason I feel I am an extravert is because I am usually confident in myself and the things I do. Having said that,
being extraverted really helps with my athletic side and involvement in the community. Being on a team that you want to work well together
requires each individual to get along and trust one another in what they do. If I didn t enjoy being around my teammates and never had any
confidence in myself or them, nothing would ever be accomplished. The same

The first few weeks of our project were spent assessing the current procurement situation within UCLA Housing Hospitality Services. We
worked very closely with our stakeholder to gain an understanding of how products are purchased, and quickly decided that our project would
focus on office supplies because they are frequently purchased and widely used, and because there are not strict regulations regarding what
kinds of products can be purchased/used (as there are for chemical cleaning supplies, for example).
Additionally, we performed background research and analyzed the current University of California Sustainability Practices Policy as well as
past UCLA Housing purchasing data. Our findings were surprising. We found that the current ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Taking all of this into consideration, we came up with the initial project idea of creating our own set of comprehensive procurement
guidelines. These would be quantified, clear, and concise. However, we soon found that this project would be logistically difficult to complete
and implement, given our resources and timeline. We also realized that the current guidelines are already available to UCLA staff, who, as the
survey data indicated, are largely unaware of them. For this reason, simply updating the existing guidelines would have likely had little effect
in changing purchasing behavior. The need for an educational component quickly became apparent indeed, nearly 50% of survey participants
identified a lack of awareness/knowledge of sustainable products as the biggest obstacle to the sustainable procurement of office supplies at
UCLA.
We delved deeper into the current procurement system, learning that the UC System is contracted with OfficeMax and that it uses an interface
known as BruinBuy to make purchases. We thus decided to use the OfficeMax Green Office catalog (available to the public online) to compile
a product recommendation list. We also made general plans to incorporate this list into an education program set to take place during Spring

The neuro developmental effects of these chemicals are comparatively well known, while their impact on human conduct has yet to be fully
comprehended.
2. Goals of the study The main goal of this study was to review all of the placebo controlled single hormone administration studies addressing
human social emotional behavior, involving the peptides oxytocin and vasopressin, and the steroids testosterone and estradiol. This research
gives insight into the underlying neural mechanisms and also demonstrates substantial hormonal control over human behavior. After
reviewing and discussing the placebo controlled studies, they proposed a theoretical model that synthesized detailed knowledge of
neuroendocrinology of social emotional behavior in animals, as well as the recently gained data on humans. The study of emotional and
behavioral disorders have become more popular in the last twenty years. Characteristics of these irregularities include: learning disabilities
that are not explainable by either sensory, health, or intellectual factors; persistently inappropriate feelings and conduct; and/or chronic
unhappiness or depression (gadoe.org). The authors of this study thoroughly analyzed the underlying neural mechanisms of supplemental
hormones and how they affect participants as opposed to using a placebo. Research into human behavior as it relates to neuroendocrinology
will be crucial to future generations and their interrelations.

The Birthmark by Hawthorne
Representation of Evil In Hawthorne s short story The Birthmark , Aylmer feels that his wife Georgiana is a miracle and that she is perfect.
Her only flaw was the birthmark in the shape of a hand placed on her cheek. Instead of focusing on all her Georgiana s perfections, Aylmer
only focused on one of her flaws, the birthmark. Aylmer constructs a statement about her birthmark saying that, It was the fatal flaw of
humanity which Nature, in one shape or another, stamps ineffaceably on her productions, either to imply that they are temporary and finite, or
that their perfection must be wrought by toil and pain. (Meyer 345) Aylmer s abhorrence for Georgiana s imperfection is a representation of
evil in this story, he talks about Nature or God and how spiritual he is during the whole story; but his key focal point shifts to her
imperfection. This is a representation of evil for the actuality that she carried one physical defect and that is all Aylmer could focus on. People
like this are called pessimistic, since they only concentrate the awful or expect the worst. Georgiana was perfectly at ease for the way she was
until her husband kept making comments about her until she became self conscious about
Middleton 2 it and started to loathe what she admired most. His original love and appreciation for his wife turned into an obsession of trying
to mold her look the way he wanted her to, not the way God intended. In the end Georgiana felt as though she would rather die than to

Injustice In Roman Polanski s The Pianist
Jewish author Elie Wiesel once said There may be times when we are powerless to prevent injustice, but there must never be a time when we
fail to protest. Roman Polanski s The Pianist successfully portrays this idea as he tells the story of Wladyslaw Szpilman, a Polish piano player
who spends five years struggling against Nazi Germany s invasion of Warsaw, Poland during World War II. Although Szpilman and his family
were incapable of preventing the injustice from happening around them, they certainly did not fail to protest it against all odds. Filled with
significant scenes that capture the cruel behavior of the Nazis, The Pianist presents the theme of man s inhumanity towards one another at a
time where pain is inevitable and hardships must be endured.
Under the sheer persuasiveness of Adolf Hitler, the Jews were being denounced and controlled by Germany s police forces. Being a Jewish
man himself, Polanski was able to depict the story with dark, acid humor and a callous objectivity that embodied both cynicism and
compassion. In order to establish this thought throughout the film, Polanski uses techniques including mise en scene and ... Show more

Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease Case Study
Kuru was first seen in the mid twentieth century and was at its peak in the late 1950s, due to the Fore tribe in Papua New Guinea having

behind a wall before the full collapse of the society. With a rare condition called hyperempathy, she had the ability to share the true feelings of
others. How does Lauren s hyperempathy effect her actions throughout the course of the text while also showing the selfishness of the current
human race? Her condition encourages her to help the people she comes in contact with, reinforces her views on religion, and allows her to
empathize with others.

She was sure that through her religion, hope would be found and people would become united. According to Andrew DeYoung, Lauren s
hyperempathyallowed her to imagine a hopeful future and way for the human race to move forward (DeYoung). She wanted people to have
something to rely on when the troubles of their world seemed to become unbearable. Unlike many others, she had no problem with stepping
outside of the norms of religion and creating her own, Lauren had great faith in science and in human intelligence (LeMenager). Through
Earthseed people would be able to learn how to cope with their issues and how they were feeling (DeYoung). In an interview, Octavia Butler
emphasized the importance of religion within a society and stated that It s those people who have so little, and who suffer so much, who need
at least for religion to comfort them (Gowler).Butler also compared Lauren s character to the biblical story of the sower when she stated that,
The sower goes out to sow its seed... and a little bit of it falls on good ground and it reproduces a hundredfold , which explains why Lauren
was so adamant on introducing others to Earthseed (Glower). Ultimately, Lauren hoped to bring people something that would help
themthroughout the course theirlife (LeMenager). While traveling North, Bankole pleaded with Lauren to leave the group so they could travel

Behavior Paradigms
Rationalist vs. Behavioralist Paradigm Problems 1. During the last five years, your instructor has discussed the emerging field of behavioral
finance with many colleagues. The most common reaction has been for those colleagues to smile and say, Behavioral finance? That s an
oxymoron. Oxymoron is defined as a combination of contradictory or incongruous words (e.g. cruel kindness). Explain this reaction using a)
the concept of paradigm and b) attributes of the behavioral and rational paradigms. a) According to the concept of a paradigm, someone in
finance would operate on a set of principles that their work is based upon. It is the method by which they analyze their data. Under this
philosophy the statement is considered an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Kuhn has been even more distressed by those who admiringly misinterpret him. I ve often said that I am much fonder of my critiques than my
fans, he comments. In the 1960s his work was seized on by radicals opposed to science and its offspring, technology, and indeed to any
cognitive authority that might distort pure experience. Kuhn recalls students telling him, Oh, thank you, Mr. Kuhn, for telling us about
paradigms. Now that we know about them, we can get rid of them. a) How would Kuhn address the criticism that he is claiming science to be
nothing more than power politics or mob psychology? b) He described it this way because sometimes scientists or people of science follow
the convention of multiple people with valid theories. They follow what was tested or theorized and expand their research from that. It is
similar to politics in that there is one individual that attempts to persuade the many to follow them and that their ideas are the truth through
experimentation. He would address the criticism by reminding those that he still believes in science and that the idea of a paradigm is not
completely a bad thing, for if you can identify it you can strive to get rid of it and progress in your thinking. b) Did the 60s radicals rid the
world of paradigms? Why or why not? No, the concept

Jane Austen Research Paper
Jane Austen
Jane Austen is a renowned writer who existed amongst other writers such as Henry Fielding (author of Tom Jones) and Mary Shelley (author
of Frankenstein), in a time called the Georgian Era. Jane Austen works include Pride and Prejudice, Northanger Abbey, Juvenilia, Mansfield
Park, Emma and Sense and Sensibility. Although Jane Austen has gifted to the world many great works, it is recorded on Bio.com that her
work did not become popular until after 1869 and during her life her works were published anonymously (see Bio.com ;
http://www.biography.com/people/jane austen 9192819 ).
According to Pemberley.com, most of what is known about Jane Austen s life was discovered in family letters (mostly written to her sister
Cassandra) ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One of Jane Austin s most popular works and one that I am personally familiar with is Pride and Prejudice. It is believed that Jane Austen
began writing Pride and Prejudice between the years of 1795 to 1799. However, the original title for Pride and Prejudice was said to be First
Impressions. First Impressions was submitted by Jane s father to a publisher but was not even accepted for a read over. However, during Jane
s thirties, she began to publish her works anonymously. This was probably due to the fact that during Jane s era, women were only regarded as
home keepers. After Jane s novel Sense and Sensibility was published, Jane was encouraged to revise First Impression. It is said that Jane was
inspired to change the title to Pride and Prejudice which she had gotten from a phrase she read in English author Frances Burney s work titled
Cecilia (Memoirs of an Heiress). Pride and Prejudice was published in the year of 1813. Her other works, Sense and Sensibility was published
in 1811, Mansfiled Park in 1814, Emma in 1816 and Northanger Abbey / Persuasion in 1818 (see; Austen Chronology

Jane Austen s Influence On Society
As a well traveled young woman for her day and age, Jane Austen undoubtedly mixed her personal experiences and encounters into her
classic tales. Many critics have analyzed the characters in her novels as being comparable to people Austen actually knew in her lifetime.
Moreover, critics say that Austen transcribed her own self through most of her main heroines, whether it was how she actually acted, or what
she desired to be like in real life. However, not many critics have touched on the importance of the aunt figure that is present throughout
Austen s novels. Most aunts throughout her novels, although not major characters, prove to be some of the most influential on the
protagonists. I would argue that because Austen regarded herself as a responsible and integral part in all of her nieces and nephews lives, she
transcribed this throughout her characters. Thus, by acknowledging the insight and importance of the aunts in her novels, we can actually
learn more as to how Austen must have been when playing her real life role as Aunt Jane. Within her own life, Austen understood the
importance of the extended family. She was an aunt to over 30 nieces and nephews, and often considered the favorite. In some cases, Austen
even took over care of some of her nieces and nephews after their mothers passed. From recovered letters to relatives biographies, the
majority of the statements regard Austen as performing her aunt duties to a T. Austen s nephew, James Edward Austen Leigh

When the consumer received this message, noise is reduced, thus increasing the chances of e commerce because the consumer is already at

the purchase has been made. Consumers who make purchases online want to know the full story about the product or service and what he or

inventory over faster to make room for newer products. Customers dislike thinking they are required to pay one amount, and after charges,

that business. Finally, learning about the customer through the use of consumer behavior and traffic recognition software enables the e tailer to

Van Gogh Implied Depth
Oil on canvas 29 X 36 1/4
1.Line In van Goh s painting we clearly see how every single brush stroke in his painting mainly consists of soft lines throughout the entire
canvas. The sky is depicted with soft lines that curve as they create a soft movement in the sky. The cypress tree consists of vertical and
curved lines as the tree rises up into the sky. Van Gogh also used a few vertical/horizontal hard lines to create the spiral church and the
rooftops to some of the homes in the village.
2. Implied Depth Van Gogh created depth in his painting by painting the cypress tree very large as he placed it on the lower left hand side of
his painting. Along with the cypress tree, van Gogh painted the spiral church right down the center of the canvas to help him create this
desirable depth as he painted the spiral church tiny in comparison to the cypress tree. Another technique van Gogh used to create depth was
the technique of overlapping objects to achieve his desirable effect of depth, we can clearly see this as the cypress tree overlaps the hills and
the sky full of clouds.
3. Color Van Gogh s use of color in this painting is very simple since he mainly used dark cool colors such as dark blue, dark green, black,
along with a hint of light blue, a couple or orange and red dashes, and some white. He also used yellow which out of all ... Show more content

dark and gloomy along with the sky, we can see how parts of the sky are portrayed to bring in light an capture your attention as the stars and

Federalism Is A System Of Government
Nothing is more certain than the indispensable necessity of government, and it is equally undeniable, that whenever and however it is
instituted, the people must cede to it some of their natural rights in order to vest it with requisite powers. (Federalist No.2). According to
dictionary, com, it defines the word federalism as a political concept describing the practice whereby a group of members are bound by
agreement or covenant. The word federalism comes from the Latin word foedus, which means covenant. Federalism refers to a system of
government in which sovereignty is constitutionally shared between a central governing authority and constituent political units. Federalism is
a system based upon democratic rules and institutions in which the power to govern is shared between national and provincial/state
governments. The term federalist describes several political beliefs around the world depending on context. When the colonies were first
coming along, the people in the colonies were coming up with rules for their colony, but as the country developed, it was agreed that the
country as a whole should have a set rules that should be followed by all of the colonies. Federalism was considered political compromise for
the problems with the Articles of Confederation being not in favor of both liberals and conservatives. The Articles, specifically Article 1
section 8, made it possible for the continental congress the power to sign treaties and declare war. The article

The Bataan Death March Effect On War
The Bataan Death March effect on war On December 7, 1941 the Japanese bombed the United States Naval Base at Pearl Harbor near
Honolulu, Hawaii. The Japanese did not stop there. Their attacks continued to the Philippines, where U.S. forces were stationed. After some
time battling, the U.S. and Filipino troops had to surrender and the Japanese took them over. The Bataan Death March did not only affect the
United States, Philippines, and Japanese, it affected how war trials were held and carried out. The question is how did the Bataan Death
March affect modern day warfare? The first attack against the U.S. done by the Japanese was the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7,
1941. When the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor just before 8 a.m., it was devastating. The Japanese fighter planes destroyed around 20 naval
ships and eight of them were some of the United State s biggest battleships. The Japanese didn t just destroy vessels, they also managed to
destroy around 300 airplanes. The amount of American soldier s lives lost was heart rending, there were over 2,000 Soldiers and Sailors lost
from the American fleet. There were also more than 1,000 wounded or critically injured on that horrifying day. The day of the Pearl Harbor
attacks became known as a date which will live in infamy , and this day was only the beginning. This was only the midpoint of Japan s
attacks, the second half was the Bataan Death March. One of the biggest questions that comes up when discussing famous

How Does Chimpanzees Use Language
Can animals learn to use language or is it all a load of monkey business? Animals can not use language because language is an exclusive skill
that belongs to humans. Chimpanzees can communicate with each other, but that doesn t qualify as language. One type of Chimpanzee is
learning in a laboratory, however, they are only learning simplistic symbols.
One reason why Chimps communicate but don t use language is they can be trained since birth, but they still won t be able to communicate
with the complexity level that humans do. Kanzi the Bonobo learned 348 symbols at the age of 26 which is the equivalent 3,000 English

Social Hierarchy And The Twisted Lip
Social Hierarchy and The Establishment of Identity:
The Man with the Twisted Lip
The short story by Doyle, The Man with the Twisted Lip, is based on disguises of wealth and appearance and how these disguises change the
point of view that people have in the social classes and what they think about each other during the Victorian Era. Disguises can be used to
create an identity for one s own personal gain or to protect an individual s identity. Neville St. Claire uses disguise to validate his place as a
gentleman. His status as a beggar allows him to become the successful gentleman that he should be, by concealing his true self to the social
class system. Sherlock Holmes uses his persona as a protection to keep the people of London safe and out of harms way. Between the two
personalities of St. Claire and Holmes is the outcome of what others may think of them; St. Claire knows the identity that he has created is not
accepted by the social class while Sherlock Holmes identity is seen as a hero and is accepted by the social class. One uses his disguise purely
for monetary gain and the other uses the identity in order to solve mysteries and protect his city. As shown in the The Man with the Twisted
Lip , disguise is only allowed when the social class accepts the identity. Despite the fact that St. Claire and Holmes created new identities
through disguise, St. Claire is shamed of his identity while Holmes is respected. Both disguises have various goals. St. Claire hides

Homelessness And The Homeless Youth
Homelessness is a major problem in the United States. An incredibly vulnerable group is the homeless youth due to their young age and lack
of education. According to Edidin, Ganim, Hunter, Karnik (2012) on any particular night in the United States there are ~2 million homeless
youth living on the streets, in shelters, or in other temporary accommodation. Youth become homeless for multiple reasons whether it be
because they have aged out of foster care, ran from home, were kicked out of their home, or because they have become homeless along with
their family members. Within the umbrella categorization of homeless youth there are high at risk subgroups, common misconceptions, and a
serious concern of lack of support and medical services. Homeless youth face an abundance of challenges, especially if they are on their own,
such as finding food, shelter, income, and potential medical expenses. Some youth experience additional hardship by facing the effects of
abuse they endured at their previous place of residence. According to the National Conference of State Legislators (2013) 46 percent of
runaway and homeless youth reported physical abuse, 38 percent reported emotional abuse, and 17 percent reported being forced into
unwanted sexual activity by a family or household member. Therefore, the chances of emotional vulnerability are high. A common
misconception of homeless youth is that even if they do become homeless they are not homeless for long. The National Alliance to End

Kids Of Helicopter Parents Are Sputtering Out
Dear Ms. Lythcott Haims, While I was reading your article, Kids of Helicopter Parents Are Sputtering Out I was given a glimpse of how
stressful it must be for students who have helicopter parents. Being what you would call a free ranger myself, I had no problems with parental
interference when it came to my studies. In this letter to you I will strive to point out the strongest and weakest parts of your article. You are
able to use pathos, ethos and logos in several different ways to get your point across. From what I could tell, the purpose of your article Kids
of Helicopter Parents Are Sputtering Out was to inform parents of the dangers helicopter parenting has on college student s mental health as
well as how it affects them in the long run. To summarize, College students who have helicopter parents lack life skills which include
effective decision making and problem solving. These students lack the ability to interact properly with others also they lack emotional and
intellectual freedom along with executive functions. Additionally, they are unable to cope with any negative feelings and new experiences and
haven t been able to build resilience in these areas. Without these abilities they aren t able to be a self sufficient adult or make any decision
without involving their parent. The reference material you use indicates helicopter parenting causes depression and anxiety and makes them
unable to have confidence in their own abilities which can also make them have

  • 2. The Rise of Silas Lapham by William Dean Howells Essay The Rise of Silas Lapham by William Dean Howells In the novel, The Rise of Silas Lapham, William Dean Howells makes a particular point about the morals of an individual in the business world. His point is that an individual, such as Silas, must check their morals at the door if they have any plans to make it in the business world. The novel has always been popular, partly because it presents Lapham s financial and social failure as consciously and deliberately chosen when he has to decide whether he shall cheat and stay on top in business or tell the truth and fail irrecoverably (Gibson 283). The Rise of Silas Lapham is a novel that deals with the potential moral corruption of a man by money. The outward signs of Silas Lapham s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Obviously the pressures of big business would be much tougher to deal with in a big city, like Boston, than in a small rural farm town, because the competition to be the best is much greater in the urban areas. The time period in which the story is set, the late 1800 s, is also a crucial part of the puzzle. All throughout the early 1800 s up until the present, big business has been on the rise. When large companies started setting up in cities, people moved to where the jobs were, and soon small towns became gigantic urban metropolises. The big business is what ultimately causes Silas moral rise and financial fall, and that is a crucial part of the plot. If the story where set in a different time period it would not have as big an impact. Also during the late 1800 s, social standing was very important. In those days a person was measured by their social standing, so it meant everything. The reason this is important is because, interwoven in the main plot is a secondary plot. This secondary plot has to do with the love triangle between Penelope Lapham, Irene Lapham, and Tom Corey. Everyone seems to think that Tom and Irene are in love with each other, while in actuality it is Tom and Penelope that are in love. This secondary plot only adds to Silas and Mrs. Corey s inner struggles. If the story where not set in this time period, the social impact on the plot would also not be as great. Another aspect of the setting is the house that they currently ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Pre Colonial And Colonial Settlements Essay Pre colonial and Colonial Settlements Pre colonial settlement began in the United States when Paleo Indians, now known as Native Americans, crossed the Bering Strait, an ice bridge that connected the Eastern and Western Hemisphere. This was a crossover from Russia into to United States in which large groups began to settle and form a life. Although this large groups would constantly move around, in which they are known as Nomads, primarily the United States was their new found home. They would endure activities such as fishing and hunting as basic survival skills. Around 1492, European nations came to the Americas to increase their wealth and broaden their influence over world affairs. The Spanish were among the first Europeans to explore the New World. (Colonial America, n.d.) This exploration led to more groups of people travelling to seek a better world. By 1650, however, England had established a dominant presence on the Atlantic coast. The first colony was founded at Jamestown, Virginia, in 1607. Many of the people who settled in the New World came to escape religious persecution. The Pilgrims, founders of Plymouth, Massachusetts, arrived in 1620. (Colonial America, n.d.) The claim of the New World was taken by British settlers, although Native Americans were the first to settle. Native Americans helped to flourish the lands, along with the new settlers. • 4. Human And Social Development Level Of Development Originally, the proverb what gets measured gets managed is applied to the business field. However, in this essay, the writer tries to explain this principle in the social development level. At first, this essay argue the reason why we need to measure the level of development, it is because producing measurements about an activity gives you a handle on it, a way to improve it. This paper goes on to critically examine the varied ways to measure development. A developed country is one with a high Gross National Income (GNI) per capita, as defined by the World Bank. But this does not tell the whole story, country s level of development is not a fixed state. In addition to the factors of economic growth, human and social development also playing an important role. In the end, the advantage and disadvantage of these methods are summarized, some points need to be studied more are also given. What is development? Measuring development is about how advanced one country is compared to other countries, or to the same country in the past. But to answer this question, one must first have a conceptual framework about what development means. Though the term development usually refers to economic growth, it can apply to political, social structure as well. It is true that economic growth may produce greater income in a country. But history offers a number of example, by increasing nation s wealth, without improving the average living standard. This happened in oil producing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Ideally, Blacks would enjoy having a nuclear family as most would however, in many cases immigrants often have transnational families which sometimes results in children having single parents. Not only does this put them at an economic disadvantage, this also leaves children without a true sense of security and family, which according to Maslow s hierarchy of needs, prohibits them progressing towards meeting all of their needs. Moreover, in the educational realm, Black students are adversely impacted by the scarcity of identifiable Black role models within their own schools. • 6. Analysis on the Prologue of the Canterbury Tales by... In his General Prologue, Geoffrey Chaucer introduces all of his characters to the reader. He writes that there was a group of people who met, and were all, coincidentally going to Canterbury. In the General Prologue, it is written, Some nine and twenty in a company Of sundry folk happening then to fall In fellowship, and they were pilgrims all That towards Canterbury meant to ride. The Canterbury Tales is a collection of the stories that each of these characters tells on the journey. There is a vast assortment of characters. There are men and women from the Church. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is quite interesting to me that as times change, the general idea of beauty changes. The sad thing is that it seems to follow money. Back then, pale, plump people were seen as more beautiful than skinny, tanned people. Back then, pale skin and a little bit of extra blubber meant that someone had enough money that they could stay inside and get enough to eat. Now, it seems that the opposite is true. Healthy food is more expensive than the alternatives such as McDonald s. Having tan skin may mean that a person has enough money to go lay in a coffin looking thing, get an artificial sunburn, and get nice leathery skin. Who doesn t like leathery skin? Wow, this got off topic quickly. I like the skipper because he seems like a guy who, while may being not the most intelligent of people, has lots of experiences and interesting stories. I like people who have been all over the place. They seem to have a unique type of wisdom, and wisdom is sometimes better than intellect. Finally, I really like the Skipper, according to the description given by Chaucer. He seems like a ridiculously oversized leprechaun. He is a huge guy, and I definitely would not like to be on his bad side. Chaucer wrote, The Miller was a chap of sixteen stone, A great stout fellow big in brawn and bone. Most of the introduction to the Miller is spent telling about how huge the man is. That means that he must be a pretty big guy. He plays the bagpipes. As a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Spider Monkeys Social Behavior Social Behavior Among Monkeys May Be More Nature Than Nurture ScienceDaily (Dec. 4, 2003) An unusual experiment with monkeys who were switched between mothers shortly after birth has demonstrated the importance of nature over nurture in behavior. Rearing Young monkeys reared by a mother other than their own are more likely to exhibit the aggressive or friendly behavior of their birth mothers rather than the behavior of their foster mothers, a University of Chicago researcher has shown for the first time. The discovery of inheritability of social behavior traits among non human primates has important implications for people as it reinforces other research that suggests that such characteristics as sociability and impulsive ... • 8. A Brief Note On Air Traffic Control ( Atc ) Essay 4.3 VARIOUS MODULES OF DLCA 6500 : 4.3.1 Air Traffic Controller(ATC) Air traffic control (ATC) is a service provided by ground based controllers who direct aircraft on the ground and in the air. The primary purpose of ATC systems is to handle the aircraft downlinks and ground station uplinks. The pilot sends some downlink messages by using MKP (Multi Functional Keypad), CCP(Cursor Control panel) in AM. The pilot will confirm the message by pressing SEND in AFD and it will come to ATC after pressing SEND function in AFD.RIU will then send the message to one of the existing radios (HF, SATCOM or VHF, with the selection of the radio based on special logic contained within the RIU). For a message to be sent over the VHF network, the radio would transmit the VHF signals containing the downlink message. This message is then received by a VHF Remote Ground Station .ATC may use a radar system called Secondary Surveillance Radar to downlink flight parameters allowing radar processing: systems and therefore controllers to see various data on a flight, including airframe unique id (24 bits encoded), indicated airspeed and flight director selected level, amongst others.Any aircraft is required to have clearance from Ground Control. • 9. Why Reality Shows Can Be Entertaining and Offensive How Reality Shows Can Be Offensive and Entertaining While some reality shows can be offensive, I am somewhat entertained by other reality shows. Reality TV usually consists of people making complete fools of themselves or just trying to get their 15 minutes of fame. Although, some people, like Jon Gosselin and Elisabeth Hasselbeck have become quite famous this way. There are some that center on celebrities and others that follow everyday people. I think the reality shows that star actual celebrities, like Celebrity Apprentice and Dancing with the Stars, are offensive because the celebrities on these shows already have money and they go on the shows and get paid for their time. • 10. The Myers Briggs Personality Test Lindsey Osbon Mrs. Brennan English II H 6th 5 September 2014 Lindsey Madison Osbon: The Supervisor Who would have known that four letters can describe a person in complete detail! The Myers Briggs Personality Test can explain your own personality better than you ever thought you could. My personality falls under ESTJ, which stands for extraverted, sensing, thinking, judging. ESTJ s are usually hard workers that use logic and tradition to complete things efficiently while staying organized. They tend to be very stable people that remain loyal, dependable, and active. They enjoy creating things around the house, volunteering in the community, as well as watching and playing sports. ESTJ s are known to be great leaders, often times employed as an engineer, doctor, manager, consultant, technician, or agriculturist. I agree that I am an extraverted person because I enjoy being with others. Although I do like my occasional me time, I prefer to be spending time with friends and family. Another reason I feel I am an extravert is because I am usually confident in myself and the things I do. Having said that, being extraverted really helps with my athletic side and involvement in the community. Being on a team that you want to work well together requires each individual to get along and trust one another in what they do. If I didn t enjoy being around my teammates and never had any confidence in myself or them, nothing would ever be accomplished. The same ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Our job was to create a management plan for Story County Conservation for a new county park they were building. Story County Conservation obtained 30 acres of land in west Ames, Iowa, adjacent to the Iowa State Research Park and we created a document that described the general information regarding the property, current and historic uses, and and the results of the initial on site assessment done on the property. The final section of the document laid out the management recommendations regarding prairie establishment, tree removal, habitat, streambank stabilization, and stream bioengineering. I was in charge of designing a buffer along the stream for bank stabilization and the stream bioengineering project. The first few weeks of our project were spent assessing the current procurement situation within UCLA Housing Hospitality Services. We worked very closely with our stakeholder to gain an understanding of how products are purchased, and quickly decided that our project would focus on office supplies because they are frequently purchased and widely used, and because there are not strict regulations regarding what kinds of products can be purchased/used (as there are for chemical cleaning supplies, for example). Additionally, we performed background research and analyzed the current University of California Sustainability Practices Policy as well as past UCLA Housing purchasing data. Our findings were surprising. We found that the current ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Taking all of this into consideration, we came up with the initial project idea of creating our own set of comprehensive procurement guidelines. These would be quantified, clear, and concise. However, we soon found that this project would be logistically difficult to complete and implement, given our resources and timeline. We also realized that the current guidelines are already available to UCLA staff, who, as the survey data indicated, are largely unaware of them. For this reason, simply updating the existing guidelines would have likely had little effect in changing purchasing behavior. The need for an educational component quickly became apparent indeed, nearly 50% of survey participants identified a lack of awareness/knowledge of sustainable products as the biggest obstacle to the sustainable procurement of office supplies at UCLA. We delved deeper into the current procurement system, learning that the UC System is contracted with OfficeMax and that it uses an interface known as BruinBuy to make purchases. We thus decided to use the OfficeMax Green Office catalog (available to the public online) to compile a product recommendation list. We also made general plans to incorporate this list into an education program set to take place during Spring ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The neuro developmental effects of these chemicals are comparatively well known, while their impact on human conduct has yet to be fully comprehended. 2. Goals of the study The main goal of this study was to review all of the placebo controlled single hormone administration studies addressing human social emotional behavior, involving the peptides oxytocin and vasopressin, and the steroids testosterone and estradiol. This research gives insight into the underlying neural mechanisms and also demonstrates substantial hormonal control over human behavior. After reviewing and discussing the placebo controlled studies, they proposed a theoretical model that synthesized detailed knowledge of neuroendocrinology of social emotional behavior in animals, as well as the recently gained data on humans. The study of emotional and behavioral disorders have become more popular in the last twenty years. Characteristics of these irregularities include: learning disabilities that are not explainable by either sensory, health, or intellectual factors; persistently inappropriate feelings and conduct; and/or chronic unhappiness or depression (gadoe.org). The authors of this study thoroughly analyzed the underlying neural mechanisms of supplemental hormones and how they affect participants as opposed to using a placebo. Research into human behavior as it relates to neuroendocrinology will be crucial to future generations and their interrelations. 3. Methods and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Her only flaw was the birthmark in the shape of a hand placed on her cheek. Instead of focusing on all her Georgiana s perfections, Aylmer only focused on one of her flaws, the birthmark. Aylmer constructs a statement about her birthmark saying that, It was the fatal flaw of humanity which Nature, in one shape or another, stamps ineffaceably on her productions, either to imply that they are temporary and finite, or that their perfection must be wrought by toil and pain. Injustice In Roman Polanski s The Pianist Jewish author Elie Wiesel once said There may be times when we are powerless to prevent injustice, but there must never be a time when we fail to protest. Roman Polanski s The Pianist successfully portrays this idea as he tells the story of Wladyslaw Szpilman, a Polish piano player who spends five years struggling against Nazi Germany s invasion of Warsaw, Poland during World War II. Although Szpilman and his family were incapable of preventing the injustice from happening around them, they certainly did not fail to protest it against all odds. • 24. Jane Austen s Influence On Society As a well traveled young woman for her day and age, Jane Austen undoubtedly mixed her personal experiences and encounters into her classic tales. Many critics have analyzed the characters in her novels as being comparable to people Austen actually knew in her lifetime. Moreover, critics say that Austen transcribed her own self through most of her main heroines, whether it was how she actually acted, or what she desired to be like in real life. However, not many critics have touched on the importance of the aunt figure that is present throughout Austen s novels. Most aunts throughout her novels, although not major characters, prove to be some of the most influential on the protagonists. I would argue that because Austen regarded herself as a responsible and integral part in all of her nieces and nephews lives, she transcribed this throughout her characters. Thus, by acknowledging the insight and importance of the aunts in her novels, we can actually learn more as to how Austen must have been when playing her real life role as Aunt Jane. Within her own life, Austen understood the importance of the extended family. She was an aunt to over 30 nieces and nephews, and often considered the favorite. Social Hierarchy And The Twisted Lip Social Hierarchy and The Establishment of Identity: The Man with the Twisted Lip The short story by Doyle, The Man with the Twisted Lip, is based on disguises of wealth and appearance and how these disguises change the point of view that people have in the social classes and what they think about each other during the Victorian Era. Disguises can be used to create an identity for one s own personal gain or to protect an individual s identity. Neville St. Claire uses disguise to validate his place as a gentleman.
