Exposure therapy is a type of behavior therapy used to treat PTSD by exposing patients to feared situations, objects, thoughts, or memories related to their trauma. The goal is to reduce distress through habituation by facing triggers until discomfort subsides. It involves thinking about, then constantly revisiting the traumatic event to become comfortable with the stimulus and overcome PTSD symptoms, unlike avoidance which only provides temporary relief. Exposure therapy can be done through real-life exposure or imagining the trauma until it is no longer distressing.
