This document discusses various protection methods for SCRs. SCRs can be damaged by overvoltage, overcurrent, high dv/dt and high di/dt. Overvoltage can occur internally during reverse recovery or externally from transients. Snubber circuits with RC networks protect against overvoltage by limiting dv/dt. Fuses and circuit breakers coordinate to protect against overcurrent. Inductors limit di/dt during turn-on. Snubber circuits also protect against false triggering from high dv/dt. Proper protection is needed to operate SCRs within their ratings.
