Project Khuluma - The Power of Small Groups for HIV-Positive Adolescents in South Africa

The power of Khuluma is the power of small groups. Khuluma is an SMS platform that facilitates a small and immediately accessible support group for 10-15 HIV positive adolescents, without having to meet face-to-face. Khuluma bridges the best part of intimacy through the connectivity of technology to break down stigma, discrimination and social isolation and increase medical adherence. Participants seek from the group what they need, generating their own discussion topics, listening to guest SMS speakers and being provided with a trained mentor who is also HIV positive and just a little older then them. Without the barriers of time and money, they can communicate whenever and wherever, giving and receiving advice in their own comfortable spaces. Analysis from survey and text message data tells us Khuluma is successful in 1) Significantly increased reported levels of social support, 2) Decreases internalised stigma, and 3) Increased knowledge of medical adherence

A survey being sponsored by the Wheeling-Ohio County Health Department that supposedly will determine if natural gas drilling in that part of WV is having an impact on so-called public health. The survey asks questions about common ailments suffered by everyone at one time or another, and then will compare the results to see if people living near drilling have an increase in those symptoms. The fatal problem with the survey is that it's completely self-reported. People lie and will do so on this survey. Therefore, the results will be null and void.

It started with 25 young gay men who attended a digital storytelling workshop organized by Greater Than AIDS and partners in Washington, DC in September 2015. The result was 25 powerful personal videos that launched the #SpeakOutHIV movement. Now more than 70 strong, the #SpeakOutHIV ambassadors are between 18-25 from various geographic locations, educational backgrounds and careers. Native It's Your Game (N-IYG) is a 13-lesson web-accessible HIV, STI, teen pregnancy prevention curriculum for American Indian and Alaska Native middle school youth designed for access in middle school health or PE lessons, after school, or in summer programs. Not every agency or coalition is equipped to work with young people, especially when it comes to developing a social media or social marketing campaign with limited resources and high expectations. Social Marketing and Youth through a Community Collaborative Project

Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) is a validated data collection method that measures behaviors in real time. Despite the advantages of EMA, this method remains underutilized in substance use research. We conducted an EMA study with phone text messages among 30 substance-using men who have sex with men (SUMSM) enrolled in a 2-month pharmacologic trial. SUMSM received 3-5 text message questions daily that assessed alcohol and methamphetamine use. We calculated text message completion rates and surveyed participants' perceptions of text messages to determine the feasibility and acceptability of EMA among substance-using MSM. Our study had high completion and satisfaction rates and very few participants reported having difficulty participating in the study. EMA is a feasible and acceptable data collection method among SUMSM. Additionally, some participants reported the EMA may help them reduce their substance use. Taken together, our findings support the suitability of EMA for future substance use research studies.

California and Oregon have expanded access to hormonal contraceptives to include direct pharmacy access. While expanded access to contraception has the potential to benefit youth both individually and on a population level, there is a need to understand whether accessing contraceptives directly at the pharmacy is acceptable to youth and how to competently serve this population. There are additional barriers to widespread implementation and utilization, including the need for provider partnerships to facilitate referrals and the lack of prerequisite reimbursement for pharmacist services.

During the avatar-based self-report survey data collection information was collected on several technical items such as web browser utilized to complete the survey and operating system used. The method of collecting this data was made available via logfiles that are common in web servers. In our study the use of Microsoft Internet Information Server was employed which does allow for the ability to capture such information via web server log files. Several items that will be reported on the findings were collected as part of the data collection project, this surrounded the question around preference to using the interactive questionnaire web-based survey system or recording the amount of time to complete the electronic survey, as well as the percentage of participants that completing the survey.

Week 5: Focused SOAP Note and Patient Case Presentation College of Nursing-PMHNP, Walden University NRNP 6675: PMHNP Care Across the Lifespan 2 Practicum Introduction Psychosis is a mental condition in which a person's ideas and perceptions are disrupted, and the individual may have difficulty distinguishing between what is real and what is not. A health condition, medications, or drug usage can all contribute to psychosis. Delusions, hallucinations, incomprehensible speech, and agitation are all possible signs; the patient has incorrect beliefs and sees or hears things that others do not see or hear. The person suffering from the disease is usually unaware of his or her actions. Medication, psychotherapy, peer support, family support and education, and talk therapy are all options for treatment. More or less every mental intervention is backed by evidence accumulated during the patient's initial interview; each patient's therapy begins with a thorough medical and mental health evaluation, the incorporation of trust, and a discussion of past mental health history, substance misuse history, family mental health history, and so on. In this example, the patient's evaluation was documented, and a diagnosis was made based on the information collected from the patient during the evaluation. When the case was being developed, a therapeutic approach was designed. The patient is a 53- year-old Caucasian male who was scheduled for an initial screening for a psychotic disorder after his sister recommended a visit to the psychiatrist because patient's behavior changed since the mother passed away. Patient Initial: S.T Age: 53 Gender: Male Subjective Data: CC: "I was brought here by my sister because since my mother passed away, I was living on my own and not bothering anyone. Those people outside my window they are after me. They just want me dead". HPI: When patient was asked " what people?". Patient said " the government sent them to get me because my taxes are high". Suddenly patient asked the provider if she can see the birds or hear any loud noise. The provider responded by redirecting the patient that she does not hear any voice or see anything. When the provider how long he is been hearing the voices or seeing things, patient said " for weeks, weeks and weeks". Patient also said the sister tapped her phone with the government. When asked about sleep, patient said " I have not slept well because the voices keep me up for days. I try to watch the TV, they poison my food on TV, I locked everything down in the fridge". Suddenly patient asked " Can I smoke?". Provider said "no you can't smoke here". Patient admit that he smokes all day about 3 packs a day. With the case about Daisy, the six month old girl, the parents had taken her daughter to her primary care physician because she had a fever of 103°F but had no other symptoms. The parents tried to treat the fever with Tylenol but the fever got worse. There was no interpreter so the physician spoke to the parents in English. The physician was concerned that Daisy might have had bacterial meningitis. The parents asked little questions about the procedures and tests the physician wanted to do to confirm bacteria in the blood stream. The parents agreed to keep Daisy at the hospital. The grandparents came and stated that they wanted a khawv koob ritual. The doctor had allowed the ritual to happen in the hospital but had said that the healer could not burn incense because of oxygen Daisy was being given. Unfortunately Daisy did not get better and died from cardiac arrest. If I was the physician I would have made sure that there was an interpreter present and translating for me what I had to say to the parents. This is very important because so many details of Daisy’s condition could get lost in the conversation between Daisy’s parents and me. With the interpreter, all options could be informed effectively and the parents could be warned of repercussions. It would also be important for me to be competent about this cultural and the values it has. It’s evident that the Hmong culture believes in Khawv Koob healers and value this practice. I would know what the benefits of this practice are and use my knowledge to be empathetic towards what this family was asking for. I would make sure that the nurses tending to the patient and their families were also competent about the Hmong culture. This case was hard to determine whether the daughter was going to die with or without the ritual. Unlike the other case, Daisy was not getting better, instead she was getting worse. In my opinion, there was probably nothing that could have been done to save her life. The case about Neng Song was different than Daisy’s case because the fever Neng had was not persistent and the doctors had no real proof of bacterial infection because no test was done. Neng’s parents refused any treatment or test to determine with there was bacteria in the blood stream and the doctor was concerned that the baby would die if not being treated. So, the doctor tried to get a court order and held the family at the hospital but by the end of their hold the baby’s fever had went down to 100 °F and the baby was not fussy anymore. The family somehow escaped and the baby had gotten better with khawv koob ritual. In this case there was a Hmong interpreter but it’s obvious that the doctor was not competent of the Hmong culture. Zines (mini, independently created magazines) have been used throughout history as a tool to explore social and political issues. In this workshop, participants will be introduced to the history of zines. After a short presentation of the presenter's use of zines with Planned Parenthood's PG-13 Players, Vanderbilt LGBTQI Life, Students of Stonewall LGBTQI youth activism team, and Advocates for Youth, we will brainstorm together ways in which zines can be used in organizing and similar work, identify at least one practical way each of us can use zines in our life and work, and learn how to create a zine out of a single sheet of paper. Adolescents living with HIV need accurate information about their diagnosis, care, and treatment; as well as long-term counseling and support. In-person support groups are a promising approach to meeting these needs, however some ALHIV face distinct challenges to attending regular in-person meetings. Although dating apps are great for finding new partners, they can also provide a platform for discriminatory language and behaviors, which can eventually lead to negative health outcomes. In this presentation, I'm going to combine data from qualitative interviews with gay men and actual language used on dating app profiles to shed light on how discrimination on these dating apps translates to negative health outcomes. Many LGBTQ folks rely on various technologies to connect with one another including LGBTQ youth but then face discrimination from those within their own community. Join me as I try to brainstorm solutions and reimagine the future of inclusive dating apps.

Can games improve the delivery of health services? We think so that's why our team has set out to explore whether gamification, the use of game elements in non-game contexts, can enhance services to prevent HIV and other sexually transmitted infections. We hypothesize that the foundational elements of games competition, collaboration, skill acquisition, and fun can motivate young men to engage in positive health behaviors to protect themselves and their communities. We are a team of epidemiologists, economists, clinicians, and game experts working together to understand whether games can be useful additions to the clinical setting.

A360 revolutionizes the way adolescent girls access contraceptives by flipping the model and starting with what matters to her. In Tanzania, A360 has co-designed with girls a program called Kuwa Mjanja, where girls can "be smart" (Swahili translation) and learn about themselves both their bodies and their dreams. Kuwa Mjanja inspires and opens possibilities, empowering girls to take action by considering contraception as "the first step to taking control of your future now." Connecting with Sara (CwS) is a DHIS2-powered, open-source platform to track, link, and engage with Sara (our client) through use of mobile phones to facilitate engagement with community mobilizers, service providers, and follow-up efforts. CwS enables a new way to engage with and bring service delivery closer to Sara. The platform powers program teams to engage more dynamically with Sara and to actively use data to inform pathways to method adoption.

Over the course of the past four years, the Johns Hopkins Center for Communication Programs (CCP) repeatedly adapted the OppiaMobile platform an open-source, Android-based application for use in diverse country contexts. Each subsequent OppiaMobile app is developed as part of an evolving global system that supports thoughtful creation, curation, packaging and distribution of health-related content for health workers. With each subsequent adaptation of the OppiaMobile platform, CCP expands its ability to design and develop, sustainable context-specific job aids and BCC tools for frontline health workers and their clients.

During this presentation we will join in live conversation with 18-24 year olds in Kenya using mSurvey. We will develop a mobile conversation to answer any burning questions from the audience while also demonstrating best practices for mobile (e.g, concise content limited to 10 questions and 160 characters per question). Conversational responses from actual Kenyans will be viewed in real time allowing for a dynamic and iterative conversation about the most pressing issues impacting Kenyan youth today. Following the live conversation, we'll engage in a guided discussion about the advantages and disadvantages of mobile as a channel for connecting with global youth such as costs, ethical considerations, and content limitations.

Learning from real people through conversations at scale

The intersection of community engagement, research, and interactive technology is an innovative way for youth to develop leadership and 21st century skills. The California Adolescent Health Collaborative and community health clinic partners, Livingston Community Health and Asian Health Services, developed Project PARTNER, where youth in rural and urban communities learn critical thinking, problem solving, and collaborative processes through researching community health issues. \n\nYouth and adult allies from the health clinics were recruited to be members of a cross-generational and cross-regional community advisory board and were trained in research methodology. The online educational technology platform Kahoot!, and the mobile app Kahoot!, were utilized in training members on research fundamentals. The advisory boards then developed community surveys through Google Forms and utilized its mobile app feature to canvas neighborhoods to obtain community data. With data collected, they will develop research questions and participate in collaborative cross-site activities to support their research.

Female sex workers (FSWs) are disproportionately affected by HIV and gender-based violence (GBV). Substance use has been shown to overlap with these co-occurring epidemics to further increase FSWs' risk for negative health outcomes. However, limited research has explored how aspects of the sex work environment shapes this risk. In this session, we will discuss findings from a mixed methods study that examined how aspects of the sex work environment facilitate alcohol use and increase FSWs' risk for GBV and HIV. We will then discuss the implications these results have for future interventions, with a special focus on the role technology can play in addressing aspects of the sex work environment to limit alcohol use and reduce FSWs' risk for GBV and HIV.
