IN THE CLASSROOM PORN IRL PORN LITERACY Porn is a scripted performance Body expectations Consent & Communication Gender roles & Expectations Draw the diagrams on the board. Be sure to engage in a discussion about how porn is different than sex in the real world. Try out a few statements, but feel free to add your own! PORN Women always moan. Average penis length is 6-9 inches. A person has an orgasm every time. Men’s erections last 30 minutes or more. People are always ready and want to have sex. IRL (In Real Life) Average penis length 5-7 inches. Sex usually lasts between 5-8 minutes. People might have sex in the dark and under the covers. People should communicate about what they want out of sex before they have sex. It takes at least 10-15 minutes of warming-up before someone is ready to have sex. MIDDLE Consent needs to be present. People may feel self-conscious about their bodies or their performance. People sometimes say no when they mean yes. Women have no pubic hair. - 2. © Health Connected health-connected.org TIPS FOR PARENTS TO START THE CONVERSATION The porn talk is part of an ongoing dialogue. It’s helpful for parents to talk about all the positive and beautiful things about sex, before they talk about porn. Make the assumption your kids have seen porn. Begin with something like, “I’m pretty sure you will have looked at porn, and I’m not upset. I just want to make sure you know some facts…”. This way kids don’t have to worry about a negative reaction. Have a curious, even playful, approach. If parents are overly serious, children will avoid future conversations. Shame is poison to open, honest conversation. Make sure your child knows porn sex is not real. It is manufactured, scripted, and commercial. The people are actors, who have often had cosmetic surgeries. Contrast it with the intimacy, fun, emotion, communication, consent and respect of real sex. Porn can be addictive/compulsive. In the interest of informed consent, kids need to know that pornography has the potential to become addictive (a compulsive habit – if you would prefer) and can impact psychological, social and physical wellbeing. 1 2 3 4 5 Want more info?
