Providing Globus Services to Users of JASMIN for Environmental Data AnalysisGlobus
JASMIN is the UK’s high-performance data analysis platform for environmental science, operated by STFC on behalf of the UK Natural Environment Research Council (NERC). In addition to its role in hosting the CEDA Archive (NERC’s long-term repository for climate, atmospheric science & Earth observation data in the UK), JASMIN provides a collaborative platform to a community of around 2,000 scientists in the UK and beyond, providing nearly 400 environmental science projects with working space, compute resources and tools to facilitate their work. High-performance data transfer into and out of JASMIN has always been a key feature, with many scientists bringing model outputs from supercomputers elsewhere in the UK, to analyse against observational or other model data in the CEDA Archive. A growing number of JASMIN users are now realising the benefits of using the Globus service to provide reliable and efficient data movement and other tasks in this and other contexts. Further use cases involve long-distance (intercontinental) transfers to and from JASMIN, and collecting results from a mobile atmospheric radar system, pushing data to JASMIN via a lightweight Globus deployment. We provide details of how Globus fits into our current infrastructure, our experience of the recent migration to GCSv5.4, and of our interest in developing use of the wider ecosystem of Globus services for the benefit of our user community.
Launch Your Streaming Platforms in MinutesRoshan Dwivedi
The claim of launching a streaming platform in minutes might be a bit of an exaggeration, but there are services that can significantly streamline the process. Here's a breakdown:
Pros of Speedy Streaming Platform Launch Services:
No coding required: These services often use drag-and-drop interfaces or pre-built templates, eliminating the need for programming knowledge.
Faster setup: Compared to building from scratch, these platforms can get you up and running much quicker.
All-in-one solutions: Many services offer features like content management systems (CMS), video players, and monetization tools, reducing the need for multiple integrations.
Things to Consider:
Limited customization: These platforms may offer less flexibility in design and functionality compared to custom-built solutions.
Scalability: As your audience grows, you might need to upgrade to a more robust platform or encounter limitations with the "quick launch" option.
Features: Carefully evaluate which features are included and if they meet your specific needs (e.g., live streaming, subscription options).
Examples of Services for Launching Streaming Platforms:
Muvi [muvi com]
Uscreen [usencreen tv]
Alternatives to Consider:
Existing Streaming platforms: Platforms like YouTube or Twitch might be suitable for basic streaming needs, though monetization options might be limited.
Custom Development: While more time-consuming, custom development offers the most control and flexibility for your platform.
Overall, launching a streaming platform in minutes might not be entirely realistic, but these services can significantly speed up the process compared to building from scratch. Carefully consider your needs and budget when choosing the best option for you.

4. Meet Our Speaker
David Bush
Senior Manufacturing Consultant,
Rootstock Software
• 30+ years of manufacturing and MRP/ERP
systems experience
• Previously at General Microcircuits,
Consona Corporation, Relevant Business
Systems, Inc.
5. A Quick Recap
• What we have covered in our first 10 episodes:
– How the ERP System handles all aspects of manufacturing:
• Items
• Bills of Material
• Sales Orders/Customers
• Purchasing or Procurement/Vendor Control
• Inventory
• Shop Floor Control/Routings
• Scheduling
• Work Orders
• Inventory planning via MRP
Today we look at a another facet of ERP/MRP systems,
one that may or may not be a requirement in your facility,
Project Control.
6. What, Exactly, IS Project Control?
• Project Control is an ERP tool that provides the ability to:
• Segregate work in the factory by project number
• Plan material for specific customers, contracts or jobs
• Track all costs (material/labor/overhead/odc) by project
• Maintain distinct costs of the same item in different projects
• In effect, Project Control allows you to run each job in your facility as if it were the
only job, while providing the flexibility needed to take advantage of enterprise
systems.
Lets take a closer look at some of the specifics regarding Project Control.
7. What Capabilities are Added Under Project Control,
compared to a company not using this tool?
• Inventory, labor, machine costs, overhead, etc. are all segregated
under specific projects
• A unique Project Number is required for all transactions,
purchase orders, sales orders, Work Orders, etc.
• A unique sub-ledger (set of accounts) may be established for each
project, further segregating the project activities from each other
How would a ‘Project’ be defined for MY company? Let’s look at some
of the possibilities.
8. How is a Project Defined?
• No hard/fast definition… A project can mean different things to different companies
• May indicate unique contracts or pieces of a contract to government contractors
• Engineered to Order Items may each require a project
• Customer or group of Customers may be a project
• Business Channels (government/private/construction, f/e)
• Control customer-supplied material
Any of these indicators, or a combination of two or more, may direct a company to ‘turn on’
Project Control.
How does Project Control affect planning? Let’s examine some considerations
for MRP.
9. Project Control’s effect on MRP
• When PC is active, MRP plans by Project. Each supply and demand
within the project is completely segregated from other supplies
and demands for the same items used in other projects.
• Global Items are planned across projects.
– Global Items are labeled as such because there is little benefit to planning or tracking them by project.
They may include things like:
• Hardware
• Solvents
• Solder
• Packaging
– Typically, items coded as ‘global’ are used on most or all projects, and are low-cost or bench-stock
items.
How are manufacturing activities ‘touched’ by Project Control?
10. Project Control’s Effect on Manufacturing Activities
• Sales Order Lines require a project number which then links the item, it’s subassemblies
and individual parts to that project.
• Forecasting may be linked to specific projects.
• On-hand inventory is project-specific, although many projects may reside in a single
location id/number (the segregation is electronic, no physical).
• Purchase Requisitions and Purchase Orders are linked to specific projects.
• Work Orders are created by MRP for specific projects.
• Operational Transactions become project-specific:
– Shipments
– Labor
– Purchase Receiving
– Work Order Receiving
– Inventory transactions (adjustments, movements, etc)
– Indirect and Service Item Purchases
11. Using Project Control in Rootstock
• Project Control setup considerations
• Running MRP under Project Control
• Sales Order Lines
• Purchasing Lines
• Inventory
18. What have we covered today?
• Whether or not to use Project Control Requires a LOT of thought.
• Project Control may be used for many different reasons:
– Government Contractors
– Project by Contract
– Customer-supplied material
– Various other scenarios
• A Global or Home project is used for material that is not project-specific.
• MRP may be run by Project, group of Projects or for all Projects.
• Sub-ledger accounts may be established for each Project, but not required.

Moving on to some housekeeping. Before we get started, I’d like to go over a few items so you know how to participate in today’s event. We've taken a screen shot of an example of the Attendee interface. You should see something that looks like this on your own computer desktop in the upper-right corner.
You’re listening-in using your computer's speaker system by default. If you prefer to join over the phone, just select “Telephone” in the Audio pane and the dial-in information will be displayed. All attendees will be on mute throughout the presentation. You’ll have the opportunity to submit text questions to today’s presenter by typing your questions into the Questions pane of the control panel. You may send in your questions at any time during the presentation; we will collect these and address them during the Q&A session at the end of today’s presentation.
Now we’ll take a look at our upcoming schedule. Today we will be covering “Project Control– A Vital ERP Tool for Many Manufacturers.”

Q&A SCRIPT:Thank you David, that was impressive!
Before we go to your questions, just a quick reminder this webinar will be posted on our website at www.rootstock.com. And of course after the webinar if you have any further inquiries, please email us at marketing@rootstock.com.
We’ll now answer questions submitted during today’s presentation as well as take any new questions – And just a reminder, you can still submit questions through the Questions pane in your attendee control panel.
Our first question today is…..
1. What do I do if I need project control for only some of my business, but not for most of it?
2. You mentioned that, under project control, parts can be segregated by project but physically held in the same location id/number. How is that possible?
3. Can you have multiple projects on a sales order or purchase order, or do you need separate orders for each project?
Before we end today’s webinar, I’d like to present a brief look ahead at the upcoming topics in our ERP 101 Webinar series.
