For our Demographics of our target audience we interviewed one of our French
teachers, Mrs Bibby, who matches our social class of A/B and is a 35+ female.
During the interview, we asked Mrs Bibby of her interests, opinions and attitudes on
different subjects related to media. We discussed her opinions on TV, music and movies
other than the Thriller/Murder Mystery genre in order to gather information for our
primary target audience's Psychographics, and what they may like/dislike within our film
opening.
Music -
Mrs Bibby tends to enjoy most music styles, however, particularly likes Soul and Motown
music.
Within films, Mrs Bibby generally likes to hear musi that empashizes the mood of the
film, for example, in the recent niche film of ‘Northern Soul’ they obviously used Northern
Soul music, and at certain points changed the tone of the film using different songs. She
also enjoys the classic ‘Jaws’ music as it indicates danger. This is helpful to us as we
know that within Thrillers (such as jaws) our primary target audience enjoys punchy, loud
and catchy, non-diagetic music.
However her dislikes are more mainstream modern/pop music such as Katy Perry and
Rhianna.
Movies -
Mrs Bibby’s favourite types of film are typically rom-coms, however, she does enjoy both
Thrillers and Murder Mysteries every so often. Although, in this case, our chosen genres
aren’t our primary target audience’s favourite type of film to watch, our interviewee
revealed that she prefers watching Thrillers/Murder Mysteries in a cinema, rather than
buying and watching the DVD at home.
A genre that does not particularly interest him is horror. This is mainly as this genre
typically includes film that contains an “unnecessary amount of gore”. We will have to
bare this in mind when creating our film opening as Thrillers especially can contain a lot
of gore, and therefore may put off our target audience.
TV –
Mrs Bibby enjoys TV shows that include Mystery, such as the current TV series of ‘The
Missing’. This is because she enjoys having to solve the problem at hand within the
program and the suspense that is created. This is useful information as we now know
that our ‘Murder Mystery’ element will appeal to our target audience. Mrs Bibby said that
she also empathises with the family within ‘The Missing’ – this is also useful information
as we know that many women over 35 will have children. She also enjoys shows that
are based on people’s lives such as the recent series of ‘Cilla’ as these types of shows
allows her to ‘escape’ from her own life. However, Mrs Bibby does not enjoy TV shows
that are political Thrillers such as Homeland as she believes they are too complex and
multi-faceted.
Mrs Bibby also likes reading and watching the news, and enjoys running frequently to
pass the time.
To market my film, I believe it would be wise to advertise after
Mystery/Entertainment/Historical Drama TV series that are typically shown late in the
evening. This is mainly because these are programs that my primary target audience
enjoy, but also because they are up later in the evening than young children (who aren’t
within our target audience). I could also show advertisements within newspapers. This is
not only because within my interview Mrs Bibby stated that she enjoyed reading the
paper, but the newspaper is a typical form of entertainment for people within the A/B
social class and also people who are above the age of 35.
I would choose for this movie to be released during a major holiday – preferably
summer. This is because at Christmas there are usually a number of new children’s films
and many people over the age of 35 tend to have children, meaning they would more
likely go to see them instead. If this film is released during the summer, it also mean that
our target audience is more likely to have time off work, having free time to go to the
cinema. I would target my primary demographic through using known iconography from
Thriller and Murder Mystery genres as well as using modern techniques to include
younger viewers and yet again widen our potential audience.
