Horror Opening Sequence
By Amelia Owens
AGE
• In the opening sequence to my film the age gap varies; at the very start a
family is shown. Where there is a Mother and Father who look around 30
years old and also a toddler. At the end of the opening sequence a
teenage girl is also shown which makes the age vary even more. This
implies to the audience that the narrative is about a family.
• Me and Libby decided to use a family in our opening sequence as it
makes the target audience age gap larger. Unlike if it was all adults in the
film it may target more older people who can relate to the characters,
where teenagers could not. Including a teenager in our opening sequence
was easy as I was the girl, therefore it was easier to create what we
wanted. It also meant that the shots we got were more realistic which
improved improved the narrative.
• As we used a teenager we achieved the stereotypical conventions of a
young girl being the victim. Younger people are usually the victim as they
are usually weaker physically and also mentally they are less intellectual
than an older person would be.
GENDER
• In my opening sequence there was a man, woman and girl shown. The girl is
the victim in our film.
• The man and the woman who are the Mother and Father to the girl are shown
to be stereotypical parents in the opening sequence, as it shows them happy
with their child who they are caring for in a garden on the photos at the start.
• We thought it would be good to show the happy family at the start and then
show the girl grown up missing and scared at the end of the opening sequence
to hint at the narrative of the film. Showing the girl grown up shows the change
in time which could imply to the audience that the family is no longer happy.
• The girl in the film is the victim as using a girl to be the victim is stereotypical
for a horror film.
CLASS
• The characters socio-economic group weren't clear shown in my opening
sequence, however the characters throughout the film will be shown as B
and C1 socio-economic group meaning they will be wealthy and will live
in large houses.
• We chose these groups as these people can still be relatable yet many
people still like to be like them.
• More middle class people are known to not be as involved with their
children as someone who is working class and they may get people to
look after their children as they can afford the childcare. Therefore the
child could of easily disappeared from the neglect of the parents, as they
could of gradually got more wealthy as they got older, which explains why
they were with the child in the past, before they got more money and
better jobs.
