Evaluation question 4

Who would be the audience for your media product?
Who will be interested in our film?

In order to determine who the main audience of our film you need to establish who is going to find the story
and the characters engaging. There are a number of things that cause this personal response to a film, and
naturally the core audience is going to be the one that best relates to the factors causing this personal
response. The key factors are as follows
●
Empathy; Can the audience relate to the characters? Feeling as though you have some form of personal
connection to the characters immediately increases the appeal of a film
●
Common Interest; Is there a particular focus of the narrative that the audience may have an existing
interest in that could make them more inclined to watch the film
●
Engaging storyline; If the film has a captivating narrative then the fan base is immediately going to
increase. This is particularly true if the audience feel they can relate to some of the events in the story, e.g.
having to overcome struggles to achieve a goal.
The theme throughout these points is a feeling of common ground between the audience and the film. The
group of people who have the greatest personal feeling of familiarity between their own lives and that of the
film are likely to be core audience for your film, and who it should be mainly targeted at.
Sarah

This is Sarah. She is a primary school aged girl,
living in a small countryside village whose interests
are playing with her friends, reading books and
watching animated princess films.

Our film would not be suitable for her. Not only
would she be too young, she would not be able to
relate to any of the characters which we have
already established is a very important factor in
terms of enjoying a film. Furthermore, as a film set
in a urban area she would not be able to at all
empathise with the situations the characters find
themselves in and finally, with a main focus of our
film being football she would have no interest in that
aspect of our film either. In conclusion this
demographic of young girls is highly unlikely to show
any interest in our film as they will not have any form
of relation to any point of the story.
Nick

This is Nick, he is 68 and enjoying retirement. He
spent a large amount of his younger life living in
London as an investment banker however he now
lives on his country estate in Cornwall, although he
often returns to London to watch Arsenal FC. As an
avid football fan he is a season ticket holder there
  and goes almost every week.

Nick would not come under our core audience as
although he spent some of his life in a big city, as
you can see from his job he lived a more glamorous
lifestyle, whereas our film concentrates more on the
grittier edge of city life and therefore although he
might have some second hand knowledge of the
characters situation he could not directly relate to
them or their lifestyles. However as a keen football
fan, he may have some interest in our film and as
such he might begin to fit in to and form a
secondary audience for our film of football fans.
Jessica

Jessica, 28, mum of 1 lives in Hackney, London,
a fan of Rom Coms her favourite films are,
Bridget Jones Diary and Love Actually, films she
enjoys as she uses them as an escape for what
she describes as her “dull monotonous city life”
although with her new born baby she has little
 time to watch films.

Jessica is unlikely to want to watch our film,
despite coming from a simialar urban city
environment to where our film is set and
therefore possibly being able to relate to our
characters, she shares no other interests with our
film, she is not a fan of football which takes up a
large portion of our film and although she may be
able to relate to the film she deliberately chooses
to watch film that show an alternative life style to
the one that she leads and as such a social
realism film is unlikely to appeal to her
James

James 18, lives on a council estate in Manchester
with his parents, he spends most of his free time
playing football with his mates, playing on fifa
football on his xbox with his friends or watching
football on the television. A stereotypical teenage
boy his favourite films are action adventure or
 those featuring sport.

James is the perfect candidate for our film, a
teenage boy living in a city environment he will be
able to directly empathise and relate to our
protagonist, feeling as though he has a personal
connection to the character will dramatically
increase the appeal of the film to him.
Furthermore the films focus on football will
correspond with his other interests therefore
making stereotypical teenage boys like James
with an interest in football the core audience our
 film is aimed at.
Conclusion

We can establish that the core audience for our film is
going to be boys aged from 15-25, they are the most likely
to be able to relate to our protagonist as he is also a male
within that age bracket. Therefore they will be able to
empathise with him and his struggles. An interest in
football will also increase their interest in the film, and this
football focus could also create a secondary target
audience as people who have a passion for football may
enjoy the film. Despite not being able to relate with the
characters situation, the shared interest in football should
be enough in conjunction with an engaging plot to get
  them to watch the film.
