6. SOME COMMON TERMS
• Production: Production is a process of combining various
material inputs and immaterial inputs in order to make
something for consumption. It is the act of creating an
output, a good or service which has value and contributes
to the utility of individuals.
• Productivity: describes various measures of the efficiency
of production. Often, a productivity measure is expressed
as the ratio of an aggregate output to a single input or an
aggregate input used in a production process, i.e. output
per unit of input, typically over a specific period of time.

retail market. Other the year Wall Mart Gained Market
shared and become market leaders

when it could not meet production deadline.
As a result, Boeing lost some orders which had
a negative impact on earning and its tock
prices.

10. OPERATIONS MANAGEMENT
• Is the management of processes or systems that
creates goods and/ or provide services. It
encompasses forecasting. Capacity planning,
scheduling, managing inventors, assuring quality,
motivating employee, deciding where to locate
facilities and more.

12. WHY STUDY OPERATION MANAGEMENT
There are number of very good reason:
1. Operation management activities are at the rore of all business organization
2. 50% or more of all jobs are in OM related such as Customer service, quality
esurience, Production, Planning, Controlling, Scheduling inventory Management
etc.
3. Activities in all in all of the other areas of business organization such as finance,
accounting, HR, Logistic, management Information System (MIS), Marketing, are
inter related with Operation management activities

There are a host of other supporting function that
interface with Operations. It all depends on the nature
of the organization they may include personnel or human
resources, product design and development, industrial
engineering and maintenance.

costs of labor, material and over head and may provide
report on items such as scrap, down-Time and inventories
• Management information System (MIS): is concerned
with providing management with the information it needs
to effectively mange. This occurs mainly through
designing system to capture relevant information and

15. • Purchasing: has responsibility for procurement of materials,
supplies, and equipment. Close contact with operations is
necessary to ensure correct quantities and timing of purchases.
The purchasing department is often called on to evaluate
vendors for quality, re- liability, service, price, and ability to
adjust to changing demand.
• The personnel or human resources department: is concerned
with recruitment and training of personnel, labor relations,
contract negotiations, wage and salary administration, assisting
in manpower projections, and ensuring the health and safety of
employees.

17. DEGREE OF STANDARDIZATION
• The output of production systems can range from highly standardized to highly
customized. Standardized output means that there is a high degree of uniformity in
goods or services.
• Systems with standardized output can generally take advantage of standardized
methods, less-skilled workers, materials, and mechanization, all of which contribute to
higher volumes and lower unit costs.

• Services: It generally implies on act. A physician
examination, TV and Auto repair.
