PROBLEMS WHICH MAY OCCUR
DURING POST PRODUCTION
WHAT IS POST PRODUCTION?
Post production in a literal sense means the work done on
a film after filming has taken place. This means the
finalising of the film and the editing that takes place to
make the film a higher quality which could make it look
more professional.
• This includes tasks such as the editing of raw footage to
cut scenes, insert transition effects, working with voice
and sound actors, and dubbing, to name a few of the
many pre-production tasks. Post-production is the third
and final step in film creation. It follows the pre-
production and production phases.
MAIN ISSUES
There may be problems/issues that could occur in our short film
during post production, which we may not be able to film again,
however there are many resolutions to mend them, by using
editing software. Problems we may face during the post
production may involve, bad lighting or colouring, a varied
sound balance in between clips and the film being quite jumpy
and may not run as smoothly as we would have liked. In order
to prevent these problems, we would have to research into the
editing software that is accessible to us (we would be using
Edius 7 to edit) we can colour grade our film to make it look
darker than it is to set the film in the evening.
LIGHTING
Lighting may be an issue, as we are shooting on the
moors in the day, but want our film to look like it was set in
the late evening. If the lighting in the film doesn’t look quite
right when we have finished filming, we can edit the
brightness and contrast through the use of our editing
software, by making an “S” shape when using the YUV
curve. This will bring the darkness of the shot down and
make it look later in the day. We filmed in the day as we
found that it is easier to edit a light scene to look dark,
than to edit a dark scene to look lighter.
SOUND
Sound may be a problem we could potentially face in the
process of pre production, as their may be factors such as the
wind or the sound of the car engine, that could be louder than
other shots, as we plan to vary the shots. We can however,
resolve this issue by balancing the sound levels whilst the
editing stage of our short film. We can do this by selecting the
clip with the loud sound and turning the volume of the clip
down, we will do this until the volume of the clip is balanced
and matches the sounds levels of the other clips. This may be
necessary, when editing the moors and the graveyard scene,
as the weather was very windy, resulting in loud wind in the
clips sound.
COLOUR
As we want to set our film in the late evening, but have filmed
in daylight, we will need to
use colour correcting, to give the film a
dark blue tinge to make it look like it has
been set in the evening. We can do this
by playing with the 3 way colour wheel
on EdiusPro 7, which we will be using to
edit our film. We can also use the YUV
curve to reduce the brightness to make
it look later in the day.
