Problem-based learning is an instructional method developed in the 1960s that focuses on using real-world problems as a context for students to learn critical thinking and problem solving skills. Students work individually or in groups to solve challenging problems that are authentic, curriculum-based, and often interdisciplinary. Benefits of problem-based learning include making learning relevant to the real world and increasing student motivation by engaging them in an active discovery process through personally investing in problem outcomes. The process involves presenting problems, generating solutions, and performing assessments to evaluate learning.
An Introduction to Inquiry-Based LearningBlue School
Blue School, an independent New York City School, provides inquiry-based learning for children from pre-primary through middle school age. The NYC-based Blue School strives to involve children in active discussion and problem solving that stimulates engagement in the learning process.
Problem-based Learning: PBL is any learning environment in which the problem drives the learning. That is, before students learn some knowledge they are given a problem. The problem is posed so that the students discover that they need to learn some new knowledge before they can solve the problem. Some example problem-based learning environments include:

•engineering design projects that are more than a synthesis of previously learned knowledge

PBL is a student-centered approach to learning that involves groups of students working to solve a real-world problem, quite different from the direct teaching method of a teacher presenting facts and concepts about a specific subject to a classroom of students.
