You might ask yourself: “Why do we need technology in our classrooms?” Let’s look at the traditional classroom compared to a modern classroom with modern technology.Traditional classrooms use chalkboards, students raise hands to answer questions, and students do assignments on pencil and paper.In modern classrooms, they use SMART boards, where lessons can be saved, clickers to answer questions so that the teacher can have automatic feedback on what the students are comprehending, and the students do assignments using computers – including blogging, wikis, and online classes (to reduce paper, time for grading, and many other great effects). The modern technology classroom is taking over and giving many more perks than the traditional technology classroom.
Using clickers in the classroom. This is how your life can be much easier in the modern classroom.
The use of blogs and Wikipedia in the classroom offers a myriad of teaching tools--- alternative ways for interaction and collaboration in the classroom-- for those that want to innovate and motivate students!
Fad or function?Blogging is short for Web Log; and, Nearly every day we hear about blogs, blogsphere, blogfarms, and even blogspeak. Recent estimates report the number of blogs has passed the 4 million mark. By commenting on posts blogging becomes a forum for interacting with one another. Enhancing education thru Social Learning – Social software.
Blogging is interactive; it can be an extension of the classroom where discussion are continued and where every student gets an equal voice. OR, it can be a place where new ideas are formulated through collaboration. Unlike sending multiple e-mails to those in the group and not knowing whether the message was received or even read, blog writers can both post to the group blog and automatically send e-mails advising the members of the blog that a new post has been entered. Everyone can see who has responded, what comments were made and when they were made. In this way, blogs can support the collaborative element so important for peer-to-peer learning and review.(refer to bullet 1). Blogs can be a secure and trusted environment for social learning in the classroom– especially positive modeling is provided by the teacher. BLOGGER, a free web-based tool allows the blog administrator to limit access to athorized users, who aree the only people allowed to contribute posts or comments to the blog. There are others I found as well– edmodo and liveJournal are just two.
21st century education requires innovation that keeps up with the learner; today’s learners or students experience life via media; social media; wiki’s and blogs both offer balance to the experience of classroom learning; they are current; they encourage peer-to-peer response; they are generational; all of these aspects make them a viable enhancement to the classroom that enables the student to provide his/her best work.
Classroom performance system, also known as cps.
Classroom performance systems, or cps, is a clicking device much like a remote control. It allows students to be able to answer multiple choice questions given by the teacher. There is a main hub that all the clickers feed their answers into. Each student is assigned their own clicker, so that the teacher knows how each student is answering each question. The students can answer multiple choice questions with up to 8 answers because of the 8 alphabetical buttons.Classroom performance systems come with a bank of questions to use for each subject tied to standards. This is much easier for teachers so that they don’t have to come up with their own multiple choice questions. However, if a teacher wishes to, they can also make up their own questions.The cps gives teachers and students automatic feedback on how each student is doing in class. It grades each of the questions/quizzes/tests for the teacher (giving the teacher more time to do other important tasks) and also allows for automatic feedback on comprehension. The teacher and students know instantaneously whether the student is understanding each individualized question and whether the teacher needs to re-teach that particular part of the lesson. I have one colleague who is done grading 200 exams in 2 minutes because the computer automatically does it for her. She sits and completes her behavior calculations while the rest of us are working on grading our many exams.In our schools today, we need to be looking for ways to save money-paper is one of the top ways we are wasting money. Clickers are one way to eliminate paper. Many classrooms using clickers are completely paper free.
Another kind of clicker: cell phones!
Cell phones can now be used as answering devices. There are many ways that cell phones can be used including collaborating, applications such as calculators, GPS, and notepad, and texting to use as clickers. Cell phones as clickers have a lot of the same perks as the cps. The teacher will get automatic feedback on grades, comprehension and attention. Cell phones are also cost effective, maybe more cost effective than cps.Many students already have cell phones, so the school will not have to buy the product. We also have the advantage of paying for less paper.At www.polleverywhere.com, teachers can set up a free account to have students text in answers to polls and questions. The extra perk of using texting is that students don’t have to answer only multiple choice questions. First, set up whatever questions the students will be answering. Then have the students text their answers to the number that the website gives to you. Then the website will give live updates to the polls and questions given to the class.
