How Did Louis Pasteur Contribute To The Germ Theory Of...
Louis Pasteur was a French chemist and microbiologist. He studied microbes and disease including
vaccinations and how to kill pathogens. He is most famous for the pasteurization process that quickly
kills most of the disease producing pathogens in dairy and wine. His most important work though was
probably in the development of vaccines for rabies and anthrax. At the time he was working people
still didn t understand where disease came from or how bacteria and viruses multiplied. Many people
believed in the theory of spontaneous generation, where microbes sprang from nothing to infect
wounds, food, or plants. Pasteur helped prove that disease was the result of microscopic organisms,
the germ theory of disease, and that life must spring from life.
Pasteur began working on the problem of bacterial contamination when a local wine merchant
approached him asking advice on how to keep his wine from souring. Pasteur s goal was to prove that
yeast, which produces lactic acid, caused the souring of both wine and milk. One experiment he did
was to prove that no fermentation of grape juice would happen if the grapes and the containers they
were kept in remained sterile through the experiment. He inserted ... Show more content on

War Communism And The Russian Civil War
After the Tsar regime was overthrown in 1917, Russia experienced further discontent as its people
carried out revolution and civil war (Modern World History: Russia 1905 41). From these occurrences,
Russia then became the first communist state in the world. The Bolsheviks had become the ruling
party after taking over the Provisional Government in the revolution of November 1917. Vladimir
Lenin had been the leader of this party. There was a bitter civil war between the Communists who
were the Reds and the opposition being the Whites. As a final point the Bolsheviks defeated their
enemies in the Russian Civil War that lasted for 3 years and ended in 1920.

The Russians had given them peace terms that they found them difficult to comply to and too severe.
War Communism had been implemented by Lenin in 1918 because of the needs of the Civil War. The
Russian economy was now aimed at providing the supplies it needed for the army (Modern World
History: War Communism and Red Terror). The Bolsheviks party decided to move away from state
capitalism because they felt the need to intensify authority, through communism (Reaction and
Revolution: Russia 1894 1924 Third Edition: War Communism). Lenin introduced harsh restrictive
policies to create the new communist rule. All aspects of life in Russia were controlled by the
Bolsheviks as they implemented severe terms upon its people. Social, political and economic areas of
life had to become subordinate to the aim of winning the Civil War (Reaction and Revolution: Russia
1894 1924 Third Edition: War Communism).
The aim of War Communism was to bring industry and agriculture under central control. Thus the
policy of centralization was put into play. This concentrated mainly on the political and economic
center of Russia. In addition this created a great increase of Bolshevik influence. There was
development within the factories through Bolsheviks influence. Lenin then put a Decree on
Nationalism. In less than two years Russia s enterprises were all under the central government control

Principles of Management Essay
Goal Setting: A Managers Role vs. the Employee s Role
How do you get your employees to perform better?
Are your employees focused, motivated, organized and driven?
What goals have been established for your employees?
These are a few of the many questions I asked to multiple managers within the company that I work
for. Being a relatively new employee, working there for a little over a year, I wanted to ask these
questions. Not to see how different managers felt about specific employees, but to get an overall view
of how their jobs as managers directly affected each and everyone s job performance. ... Show more

I asked our tech. manager if he covers all bases before he relays any goals to his employees (Rogers,
Stan Personal Interview May 10, 2005). He then answered:
In order for me to properly prepare any of my employees for their monthly goals I have to go over all
of the information multiple times before I can effectively relay the message to them. Otherwise, if I m
not organized, they won t be organized out on the job and in the office.
Pillar three, direct is next. This is where the manager simply flips on the switch and turns on the lights
for the employees. They are given the goals that have been established for them and have been
released. It is now up to the employees to take the information that they were given and effectively
and efficiently perform their duties to
the best of their abilities. Our internet services manager said it best by saying (Brown, Phil Personal
Interview, May 15, 2005):
Direction is the essence of goal setting. What path will your employees travel down if not directed
down the right path? Some will meet their goals but more times most of them will head for the light
and never reach it. If the manager does in fact divulge all of the necessary information, they will see
that overall job performance will remain high and the employees will be better

Dictatorship to Democracy Overnight in Indonesia
Dictatorship to Democracy Overnight
Indonesia is a country in Southeast Asia that was under a military dictatorship for 32 years. The
dictatorship era started after the failure of communist coup d état by Indonesia s Communist Party in
1966. General Suharto, the one who had the biggest role in failing the coup d état, ousted the first
president and established an autocratic anti communist regime known as the New Order, which
attracted political and economic support from Western governments during the Cold War. At the
beginning of this era, he said he would practice a kind of semi direct democracy, while later, even the
news in newspapers was controlled by the government. His era was ended in 1998 by a huge student
revolution and riots ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In contrast to the New Order era government s reaction to separatist movements in Indonesia, the
reformation era government in its early days made a mistake by giving a referendum to East Timor, a
province in central Indonesia that had longed to form its own country since the New Order era. The
referendum was to stay with Indonesia or to stand as an independent country, and the province chose
the latter choice. This influenced other provinces that are not satisfied with the reformation era
government due to the centralized development in certain parts of the country to start separatist
movements.
Even though Indonesia was led by a dictator during 1966 1998, there were still elections during the
period. The election at that time was to elect one of the three political parties to get their members as
new members of House of Representatives. Since there were only three political parties, each time
there was going to be an election, the campaigns never ended up in chaos and the election ended in
peace. After General Suharto was ousted in 1998, there was some kind of a party craze , everyone
intended to make their own political party, without any limitation from the government. Consequently,
in the 1999 election, people had to choose from 48 political parties. It could be imagined how a
country that was still very unstable after a revolution, had an election with tons of

King Lear Feminist Analysis
When interpreted from a feministic perspective, it is apparent that the story of King Lear and The
Winter s Tale contains misogynistic implications. While the three sisters in King Lear were fallen
victims to the misogynistic societal needs, Hermoine in The Winter s Tale also suffered from
temptress accusations. The ingratitude that the women endured from male authorities who viewed
women stereotypically, claims how both plays challenged gender roles and suggested that women
were wicked, sexually deviant, and the cause of all issues. Moreover, women who lived during the
Shakespearean period like the female protagonist in these plays, lived in misogynistic society s due to
the lack of equality that was implemented during this time period. In the Shakespearean play, King
Lear, the feministic attributes were tested when Lear asked his three daughters, which of you shall we
say doth with merit challenge (1.1.49 51) which legitimized a man s authority over women by using a
women s emotions to boost a man s ego. If Lear had three sons rather than three daughters, receiving
affection to get the largest bounty (1.1.50) would not have occurred but because women were
portrayed as emotional, Lear quantifying the love that each daughter had for him was appropriate.
This demonstrates the first misogynistic approach towards women in King Lear. When each daughter
displayed their affection towards their father, Lear s most faithful daughter, Cordelia elaborated that

The Price Of A Coca Cola
The graph below represents the price of a Coca Cola stock from 1988 onwards (the availability of the
data is from 1988). Over the past three or four years from 2012 onwards, the price of the stock has
fallen from around $14 to around $9. A reasonable growth rate for the company in the future would be
around 1 to 2%, taking into account of macroeconomic conditions and changes in consumer
preferences. However, since Coca Cola is a global brand with relatively large market share, the
duration of decline in company performance will be shorter. As an approximation, the growth of the
company will grow around 2% a year.
Dividend Discount Model
The dividend discount model (DDM) is a method for valuing the price of a stock by using past
historical data to predict future dividends and then discounting them back to present value. It can be
deduced that if the value obtained from the DDM is higher than what the shares are currently trading
at, then the stock is undervalued. In other words, the value of a stock is equal to the future value of all
the dividends, discounted by an appropriate risk adjusted rate. This is because no stock is ultimately
worth more than what it will provide investors in terms of current and future dividends.
To calculate the value for a stock, the formula is given:
From part (3), the discount rate is 5.38% and from part 4, the growth rate is 2%.
On average, the dividend return per share is 22.61c. This is on average for every dividend distribution

The Transcontinental Railroad is a marvel of engineering and perseverance. A transcontinental railroad

States. The initial project was proposed in 1845, but it took more time to start the dangerous
construction. It had multiples consequences for the United States, not all positive. But the
Transcontinental Railroad did affect the westward expansion.
In 1845, Asa Whitney, an important New York merchant, asked Congress for charters and funding for
the construction of the railroad. Congress refused, mainly because of Senator Thomas H. Benton of

When the Union Pacific Railroad starts building, it is in 1862, in the middle of the Civil War. There
was a lack of labor since most people went to fight. Because of the lack of workers, during the whole
Civil War, only forty miles of track were laid from Omaha by the Union Pacific. However, when the
Civil War ended in 1865, the construction went much faster. The U.P. employed Irish immigrants and
Civil War veterans to build the railroad. The workers laid 1,087 miles of track between Omaha, NE
and Utah. The Central Pacific Railroad had much less land to cover, but they had to build through the
harsh Sierra Nevada mountains. The workers were mostly Chinese immigrants that came to California
from the Gold Rush of 1849. They lived in brutal condition, and had very low salaries. Quote buy

The Bloomer Cut was the first major engineering problem for the railroad. It took a year to build, from
1864 to 1865. It was eight hundred feet long and sixty five feet high, and it still exist to this day.
Another challenge was Cape Horn, a steep passage following the curve of the mountain at a thousand
and three hundred feet high with a slope of 45 to 75 degrees.. It was named after the dangerous
passage that ships use at the southern tip of South America.

The Impact Of The Berlin Wall
The Berlin Wall divided Germany into the East and West because of opposing ideas of the future for
Germany. Germany was weak and pliable after barely surviving Nazi Germany, so the vulnerable
country could have been formed into anything and the major powers knew this. The Soviet Union
wanted a communist Germany and the major democracies America, Britain, and France wanted a
democratic Germany. Because of these opposing ideas, Germany was split into the East and West,
each living an entirely different life depending on the country of influence. When the Berlin Wall fell,
though, neither side was as it was before; the country had changed in almost every way. This essay
analyzes how the Berlin Wall changed Germany, focusing on Berlin, in many different aspects and
lenses. The essay will examine how the people, the economy, the government, religion, and literature
were affected by this great divide. This essay will also explain how America influenced German
culture through integrating Western culture during the Wall in the West and after the Wall in both
sides. To what extent was Germany, especially Berlin, similar and different politically, economically,
and culturally from how it was before the Berlin Wall was built to when it was torn down?
A Background

France and they both signed the surrender documents, ending World War II in Europe. The War was

The Government Must NOT Censor Pornography Essay
It goes by many names, from smut to erotic art. It s as old as civilization itself, and is present in all
cultures, with or without the approval of those in authority. It takes many forms, finding expression in
literature, music, painting, sculpture and theater, as well as in the more modern media of photography
and cinema. Its creators range from the anonymous scrawler to the likes of Catullus, Michelangelo,
Shakespeare, Titian, and Wagner; and their talents run the gamut from childishly crude to supremely
eloquent. As with any other creative genre, pornography indulges a wide variety of tastes from the
brutish to the exotic, and covers themes from humorous to sublime to tragic.

And if mom and dad are forthright and candid in answering these questions it s very unlikely that the
experience will have any lingering negative effects. But let s assume the worst, and suppose that a six
year old child could experience some form of mild trauma as a result of glimpsing, say, some of the
steamier portions of an adult video. Obviously, abolishing the production and sale of such materials
would have prevented the trauma. But proscription of everything that is unsuitable for children would
also necessitate the removal of all power tools from the home workshop, as well as cooking utensils
and appliances from the kitchen. Also illegal would be automobiles, household chemicals, hunting
weapons, lawn mowers, medicine, and most of the books in our libraries (including Bibles, which
contain much material of a distinctly adult nature). Do we really want to reduce the general

Adult Americans are still free in most localities to choose for themselves whether or not to procure

majority of those who use porn do not engage in antisocial behavior. (It s also difficult to take

Shopping Experience With Sprouts Farmer s Market Essay
I split my food shopping between a suburban enclave in Franklin, TN and my parent s country house
in Columbia, TN. There are a multitude of lifestyle discrepancies between suburban and country
living, and I suspected that this would be evident in the retail food options offered. Columbia grocery
stores are either large big box grocers or small regional stores. These stores historically service more
conventional food options. Franklin s larger and more affluent population allows for more diversity in
alternative and health food stores. I chose to observe a local Kroger Grocery Store in Columbia, and
contrasted that shopping experience with Sprouts Farmer s Market in Franklin. The separate shopping
experiences elucidated that retail food options are contingent on the expectations, comprehension and
financial flexibility of the customers and the stores. I visited the Kroger Grocery Store around eight on
Sunday morning. The patron demographic was primarily older than 55 and African American. The
store has provided groceries for the community for at least fifteen years. The store was clean and
organized, but there was a slight dingy appearance that comes with older stores. The store has been
remodeled and remerchandised, but the dark lighting and worn floors disclose the stores true age.

Herpes Simplex
Shingles like chickenpox may also occur in the mouth if the maxillary or mandibular division of the
trigeminal nerve is affected. A rash will appear on the mucous membrane of the upper jaw, usually
along the palate, sometimes along the gums of the upper teeth or even along the lower jaw (tongue or
the gums of the lower teeth) respectively. It may show up alone or along with the rash along your skin.
Like the skin lesions they will typically stay to one side of the mouth and they will distinguish
themselves from oral blisters. They will typically show as 1 4mm opaque vesicles which will break
down quickly to leave ulcers that will heal in about 10 14 days. Prodromal pain, occurring before the
rash, could be confused with that of a toothache ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Very few diseases produce such a rash so differentiating between them from others is simple. Herpes
simplex virus (HSV) can produce such a rash but only occasionally. If there isn t a rash or it hasn t
developed yet then shingles can be difficult to diagnose. Apart from the rash the other symptoms
(fever, headache, possible sensitivity to light and pain) can be linked to many other conditions. The
Tzanck smear is helpful in determining an acute infection of herpes virus though it doesn t distinguish
between HSV and VZV. If you suspect that its shingles a trip to your doctor can help diagnose if the
rash hasn t produced yet. A simple blood test can determine if you have VZV specific IgM antibodies
in your blood. This particular antibody only appears when you have chickenpox or shingles, never
when the virus is dormant. In larger laboratories they collect lymph from one of the blisters to test for
the VZV DNA or to look with an electron microscope for virus particles. Molecular biology tests are
based on in vitro nucleic acid amplification (PCR testing) which is currently the most reliable. Nested
PCR tests have a high sensitivity and are susceptible to contamination which leads to a false positive.
The latest real time PCR tests are rapid, easy to perform and just as sensitive as nested PCR and have
a lower chance of contamination and are more sensitive than viral

Analysis Of Digging By Seamus Heaney
Seamus Heaney, one of the most world renowned poets in Ireland, takes pride in his past memories as
a kid, implementing literacy strategies in majority of his poems to share his background. Memories
ultimately builds the foundation of an individual, developmenting both negative and positive
experiences that define a person. Heaney expresses these experiences by utilizing numerous devices,
such as diction, imagery, and tone, to highlight the sensation of physical interactions that he feels. In
one of his poems, Digging , Heaney starts the first stanza with a rhyme scheme, The squat pen rests;
snug as a gun. (Heaney 2) This quote provides a description of the shovel and pinpoints as certain
burden that Heaney feels about the shovel. The words snug as a gun conveys that the shovel gives a
sense of violence and force. However, Heaney must accept the fact that digging is a tradition inherited
from his father and doesn t want to disappoint him. As a result, this thought sets a respectful tone
towards his father in the first stanza and continues on with imagery, describing the action of digging,
Under my window, a clean rasping sound, When the spade sinks into gravelly ground. (Heaney 3)
This reference is defined through Heaney s perspective of his father digging outside. This childhood
memory sparks deep descriptions of actions held within the poem, concentrating on sound, smell, and
sight to feature the response that digging has on Heaney. The hearing of the digging outside the
window proposes that Heaney is writing exactly what he remembers, connecting to the thematic theme
of memories and how it shapes the understanding of an individual. The memory signifies an important
experience in Heaney s life, exemplifying the control that comes in digging and connects this to the
control he has over his life. In addition, in stanzas 8 to 12, Heaney s focal point rests on his rustic Irish
past and the introduction of Heaney s family tradition. This past memory frames the roots and basis in
which he grew up on and expands his perception of digging through the linkage of his father and
grandfather, By God, the old man could handle a spade. Just like his old man. (Heaney 15) From this
sentiment, digging

Definition Of Professionalism And Professionalism
Professionalism
Chanda Hutton Baker College Flint
PROFESSIONALISM
Definition
My definition of professionalism is a person that carries themselves in a respectful manner. The
professional is educated, has a clean appearance, well spoken, and treats others with respect and
integrity. When a person is not professional it reflects poorly on the company. I have experienced
unprofessional behavior quite often. I have seen nurses, and other medical professionals, act
unprofessional. I will share a story of a very unprofessional situation. This situation put me in a
position where I had to make a moral and legal decision and take the appropriate action. Two nurse
aids were bathing a man that was in a coma. He had a penal implant from having prostate cancer. The
implant was a pump. While bathing him the girls pumped his penis up, took pictures and sent the
pictures to my phone along with derogatory remarks. The girls thought this was funny. I did not. I
thought it was extremely unprofessional, and degrading to that patient. The girls were my friends, so
the decision I had to make was not easy. I went to my nurse manager and took the appropriate action
and steps. The girls did lose their jobs. I did feel bad for them, but I felt worse for that man. I had to
do what was right.
Importance of Professional Behavior Professional behavior is important in the nursing profession
because of the long road it took for nurses to be recognized as a profession and

Western European Explorations
The Western European expeditions of the 15th 18th centuries had a multitude of causes, religious
aims, desire for wealth, glory, and improvements in technology, it also caused a number of things,
such as colonial expansion and the Columbian exchange, use of slaves, and rise of capitalism and
mercantilism. It is often said that the European s chief motives for exploration were God, gold, and
glory . The Europeans set out in a missionary zeal and attempted to convert as many people, like the
Native Americans, to Christianity as they could and drive Muslims out of other lands. Another thing
that propelled the Europeans was the search for gold and other riches in far off lands through sea
routes. They hoped to obtain spices like nutmeg, ginger, cloves, cinnamon, pepper, etc. and luxury

result of the deviation to the Native American population, creating a need for laborers, and the
growing desire for cash crops like sugar, cotton, and tobacco, slave trade saw a sharp increase. This
time period also saw the spread and intensification of capitalism, resulting from the growth of town

Hamlet s Vengeance
An unidentifiable person once stated Revenge is a dish best served cold. What this saying means is
that revenge is best served with patience and not immediately. The relevance of this saying to the play
is Hamlet and his intent to murder King Claudius. He was very patient and considerate of the death of
Claudius, believing he should kill him during a moment of sin, so the soul of Claudius would suffer in
the fires of hell. However, Hamlets strive to avenge his father s death lead to a series of deaths, rather
than one. His vengeance would eventually result to the killing of an innocent, the suicide of one s

Laertes found out about his father s death, and returned home immediately. Laertes confronted and
accused King Claudius of his father s death. Claudius told Laertes that Hamlet was responsible for
everything. Laertes then decides to avenge his father by plotting with Claudius to killing Hamlet. For
example, Laertes said So mortal that, but dip a knife in it, where it draws blood no cataplasm so rare,
collected from all simples that have virtue under the moon, can save the thing from death that is but
scratched withal. (Shakespeare 233) As a result, Laertes goes out of his way to plot Hamlets death by
dipping the tip of his sword in poison. Like Hamlet, Laertes shared the same passion of revenge,
which ultimately lead to Laertes s downfall. For example, during the duel between Hamlet and
Laertes, Hamlet stabs Laertes with his own poisoned sword that causes his death Why as a woodcock

Laertes illustrates that after his father s death Laertes had one goal in mind and that was to avenge his

that he did not account for Hamlet to use his poison sword against him in his plot to kill

Today someone in the [United States] develops Alzheimer s disease every 66 seconds. By 2050, one
new case of Alzheimer s is expected to develop every 33 seconds (Alzheimer s Association, 2016,
Alzheimer s disease facts and figures, pg. 459). The 2014 film, Still Alice, provides substantially
crafted insight into a life with this tragic disease. The film follows the life of protagonist Alice, age 50,
a linguistics professor at Columbia University. It showcases the struggles that she faces in coming to
terms with her disorder and the strife she faces upon degradation of her memory. While accurate in
many of its approaches, Still Alice, in some facets, is marginally simplified. The film brings a new

Fit Man Cook s Quesadilla
I, J.L., must confess that I have become a full fledged foodie. I mean, when you re subscribed to
numerous YouTube channels and have a folder with bookmarked recipes it s time to admit the fact.
And what better way to celebrate it then with a recipe.
The recipe was inspired from Fit Man Cook s quesadilla. I decided to take it one step further and add
spinach and black olives with tzatziki sauce on the side.
I will freely admit I m not a chef and I had to estimate how much of each ingredient I put in my
quesadilla so feel free to adjust where you see fit.

Ingredients:
2 Tablespoons of black olives
1/4 cup of spinach
1/4 cup of red onions
1/4 cup of green bell pepper
Two cloves of garlic

Instructions for Tzatziki sauce:

Madame Bovary, By Gustave Flaubert
In the classic literary novel Madame Bovary, by Gustave Flaubert, is the family of Bovary s in which
Charles and Emma Bovary are the focal point in the story. The setting of the story takes place in
France during the 1700s where class distinctions were prominent. In this novel, there is a theme
surrounding the idea of the social class hierarchy. In the world of Madame Bovary, Emma is stuck in
conflict with the middle class of the bourgeoisie, and between the upper and lower bourgeoisie, and
the working class who are the proletariats. Even though Emma Bovary may just be a desperate
romantic looking for love and is trying to live a romanticized life from the novels she read when she
was younger, the lives of the Bovary s are affected by the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As these sequences of events are told from Madame Bovary, Emma is trying to raise herself into the
upper bourgeoisie class where wealth, power, intelligence, and the arts lie. As described by Karl Marx
and Friedrich Engles in the Communist Manifesto, The bourgeoisie has torn away from the family its
sentimental veil, and has reduced the family relation to mere money relation. (8) In my own opinion,
these two are talking about how being in the bourgeoisie class breaks down family relationships and
values, and becomes more of a focus on obtaining the means of greater status and wealth. In Emma
Bovary s case, she begins to neglect her own daughter Berthe, and takes advantage of Charles s
naiveness to try and meet up with her lovers (Both Leon and Rudolph). This also puts the Bovary
family into debt as Emma keeps expenditure high to achieve a lifestyle she wants. This can be seen
when she makes trips and buys gifts to go see Leon in Paris.
By building up the family debt, it puts the Bovary into the lower bourgeoisie class. Emma has sold
several of their belongings and even the rights to Charles s family estate. In part, she also has taken
out loans from Lheureus, which has been taking advantage of Emma s desperation to see her lover
Leon. In part three, chapter seven of Madame Bovary, we learn that the officers come to the Bovary s
house in Yonville to

Representation Of Symbolism In Herman Melville s Moby Dick
In Herman Melville s Moby Dick, the white whale has been a representation of many things, including
God, nature and specific origins of life that are beyond the control of mankind. The quest to hunt
down Moby Dick by the Pequod is seen as symbolic. For Ahab, slaying the sperm whale is the main
goal in his life. This can be extended symbolically so that the sperm whale represents everybody s
goals. His vengeance towards the sperm whale is similar to man s struggle in contradiction of destiny.
The only way out from Ahab s vision is often seen through the Pequod s unusual meetings, called
gams, with other ships. Upon finishing this novel, the only representation that Moby Dick itself can be
seen as, is a goal. Melville implies that humans in general need to have a goal in life, or stating that
such a goal can destroy one if no one ever attains it. Although this novel was revolved around a white
whale, it was not the only sea creature that played an important role. The white whale was not the only
life lesson represented in Melville s Moby Dick, I argue that the giant squid carries numerous
representations, the sharks represent human nature and the brit represent human consciousness. In
chapter 59 of the novel, Melville highlights the significance of the form of the giant squid. Dagoo is
the character who first spots this white mass that he believes looks like Moby Dick. He and Ahab
inaccurately mistake this giant squid for Moby Dick because of the white color. Due to this

Napoleon s Influence In Italy Research Paper
In north Italy, roots of struggles between city states still plagued their relationships. Their failure to
unite reduced this potential to compete with other European powers and therefore became political
satellites in a continent of powerful nations. The abrupt switch from the Mediterranean to the Atlantic
and Indian oceans for new sources of trade sent the maritime economy of Italian cities into decline.
Direct access to the Atlantic became the primary source of wealth for european countries like Spain
and Portugal. Challenges to the Church s authority in earlier centuries failed to bring down the papacy,
and in the 16th century it stood strong in face of the Protestant Reformation. It did however, loose
much of its influence in Europe. Consequently, the Pope was able to establish its own house and
enlarged the Papal States under which it functioned. By the beginning of the 16th century, the Pope s
domain extended into the lower Po River valley.
AUSTRIAN HABSBURG ERA (1713 1860) In Spain, the Spanish succession of 1701 created a

Napoleon s influence in Italy during the 1700 s also resulted in the creation of the modern day Italian

dimensions and tricolor aspect. After Napoleon crowned himself the emperor in 1804, a small part of
Italy was annexed to France and the remained of the peninsula was divided into kingdoms and small
principalities. The Congress of Vienna in 1814 would reestablish the former boundaries of the

Urban Sprawl, Inner City Growth, And Suburban Developments
Recently, people in different displines have vigorously discussed and suggested issues, goals, and
principles to create better future settlements to fight against problems of urban sprawl, inner city
decline, and suburban developments. As a part of these efforts, several sustainable models (e.g., smart
growth, new urbanism, sustainable development, resilient community, or etc.) have been proposed and
implemented. Please discuss topics below.
Q 1. Several decades ago, suburban was one of the utopias where people wanted to live. But some
things are changing now. What were/are the major causes of the current emergence of sustainable
models? Please make good arguments based on the history of suburban development, urban sprawl,
inner city ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Besides, improved infrastructure and rise in living standard made these suburbs more attractive. So
people are willing to sacrifice more commuting time to live in these suburban communities. From
development perspective, irrational development overrules reasonably urban planning, and led to
unprecedented development in suburbs. Another factor that contributes to urban sprawl is rise in
population, the fact that the number of people live in cities exceed the capacity means people have to
move out. The last reason could be people s preference, people want larger homes, more rooms, bigger
balconies and bigger lawns, so when it is economically feasible, people will move to suburban.
Some of the negative effects of urban sprawl include increased public expenditure, because to develop
these suburbs, the cities have bring more infrastructure and the money usually comes from tax payer.
The second is increased traffic, because typical urban sprawl makes commuting time longer, when it
lack public transportation, people have to drive more car, it will cause more traffic jam, more air
pollution and more auto accidents. The third is health issue, people live in suburbs excise less because
they rely on cars to go to groceries, churches etc. The forth problem is

Vertigo Film Techniques Essay
Hitchcock makes use of a number of techniques in Vertigo and brings them together to make a film
that is considered to be one of his greatest masterpieces. Through the use of colour, lighting, camera
movement, dialogue and characterisation, Hitchcock produces a film that fascinates and intrigues us.
One of the key techniques, which Hitchcock makes, use of in Vertigo is the different use of colour. He
chooses certain colours due to their symbolic connotations and then uses them to contrast different
characters. He frequently uses green and red, for example when Scottie meets Madeleine for the first
time, the restaurant is decorated in red with the visitors wearing mainly dark clothing. Green is
quickly established as Madeleine s colour as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The lighting used by Hitchcock also serves to portray Madeleine as a fantasy woman, using the
lighting to highlight her face. As Madeleine passes by Scottie in the restaurant she is bathed in a soft
light which makes her all the more noticeable against the backdrop of a dimly lit restaurant.
Furthermore, as she passes by him, she is shown in a full body shot in the center of the frame, which
Hitchcock uses to create an overwhelming sense of romance. Here, Madeleine is the desired object
clearly separated from her mundane surroundings. The viewer is aggressively confronted with
Madeleine s image and this allows us to be swept up in the romantic fantasy along with Scottie. The
lighting used in this scene actively draws the viewer to her features and ensures that all attention is on
her. The audience are enticed and seduced by her and this stretches to Scottie as well as we can see
that he is drawn to her and has to make an effort to be covert.
The scene begins with the camera moving towards a door made of radiant red glass. The camera then
moves to from Scottie s position at the bar. Scottie does not see Madeleine directly therefore the
camera does not directly occupy his point of view. Madeleine appears and pauses. She appears
through a doorway, which may suggest that there is something in her past that will reemerge. As she
exits, the mirror images signal give us a clue to what we will eventually discover that there are two

Sibling Relationships And Family Relationships
Over time the relationships you have with your siblings change, you can start out not liking each other
and then in later life being to love or tolerate each other ( Brothers, Sisters and Aging Parents , 2014).
Late adulthood is defined as being over the age of sixty five (Later Adulthood, n.d.). The sibling
relationships is forced relationships that are maintained by the siblings to foster a lifelong relationship
(Martin, Anderson, Rocca, 2005). Siblings play very different roles for each other, friend, competitor,
manager, and teacher (as cited in Martin et al., 2005). Sibling relationships can be of three different
types: Brother and brother, sister and sister, and brother and sister, all three will be discussed. Brother
and Brother relationships out of the three types seem to have the least amount of telephone contact of
all the types (Spitze Trent, 2006). Tend to help each other more with giving help to each other than
receiving help from each other, brothers tend to help with giving advice over helping each other with
transportation (Spitze Trent, 2006). Brothers would rather receive help with child care then be the
brother providing the child care (Spitze Trent, 2006). Brother relationships tend to be completive with
each other trying to outdo each other. Brothers tend to visit each other about three times a month
(Spitze Trent, 2006). Brothers tend to help each other with repairs more than any other sibling type
(Spitze Trent, 2006). Sister and

A PAnd Godfather Death Comparison
In John Updike s A P, and Godfather Death, we see many similarities between the plots, but while both
authors know how to captivate their audience by introducing different plots, there are also many
differences in the plots throughout the story. The first part of the plot in Godfather Death takes place
when a poor man who has twelve children and had to work all day and night just to give them bread ,
(Grimm 1) has a thirteenth child. Worried about what he will do he runs outside to find a godfather for
the child. And because the father was so poor he chose Death as the godfather because Death makes
all men equal, (Grim 14) and also because Death takes the rich and the poor without distinction
(Grimm 14). The next part of the plot takes place after the kid has grown up and Death led him out
into the woods, showed him an herb, (Grimm 18). With the herb, the kid soon becomes a rich and
famous doctor. Thus, Death kept his promise to the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

you see me standing by the sick person s feet, then he is mine. (Grimm 18). But beware of using the
herb against my will, or it will turn out badly for you. (Grimm 18). In the tale, Death appeared at the
king s feet which meant that the king would die, but the doctor tricked death and placed the head of
the king next to death and gave him some herb and in doing so not only saved the king but royally
ticked off Death. Death became very angry and stated, You have hoodwinked me this time, and I will

Motifs In Dubliners
Two major motifs reappearing throughout the stories in Dubliners are the Messianic and Trinity
motifs. Joyce seems to have conceived Dubliners as his offering of a sacred book to the Irish Literary
Movement s attempts to spiritually arouse Ireland so that she might throw off the chains binding her to
her oppressor, England. Joyce s sacred book, however, does not flatter his countrymen by
strengthening their claims to be chosen of people of the modern world and not to be made in the
heroic image of the mythical historical Cuchulain; rather, it allows them to take a good look at
themselves in a nicely polished looking glass so that they might see the pretentiousness of their
claims. It is in great part through the two major motifs in

Spanish American War Analysis
It is important to read historical accounts of other countries in regard to analyzing the Spanish
American War because it helps to paint a more full picture of what caused the war. From one
perspective only a partial story is told, which can seem bias or can be completely wrong. This is seen
in the Spanish American War from the perspective of Americans. It would seem that it is the Spanish s
fault for the destruction of the USS Maine, but once a different perspective is taken, it is realized that
the explosion came from the inside of the USS Maine. We know it came from the inside because the
hull of the wreckage is pointing outwards. This means the U.S. Maine was exploded intentionally to
spark conflict, meaning it wasn t the Spanish s fault.

  • 2. How Did Louis Pasteur Contribute To The Germ Theory Of... Louis Pasteur was a French chemist and microbiologist. He studied microbes and disease including vaccinations and how to kill pathogens. He is most famous for the pasteurization process that quickly kills most of the disease producing pathogens in dairy and wine. His most important work though was probably in the development of vaccines for rabies and anthrax. At the time he was working people still didn t understand where disease came from or how bacteria and viruses multiplied. Many people believed in the theory of spontaneous generation, where microbes sprang from nothing to infect wounds, food, or plants. Pasteur helped prove that disease was the result of microscopic organisms, the germ theory of disease, and that life must spring from life. Pasteur began working on the problem of bacterial contamination when a local wine merchant approached him asking advice on how to keep his wine from souring. Pasteur s goal was to prove that yeast, which produces lactic acid, caused the souring of both wine and milk. One experiment he did was to prove that no fermentation of grape juice would happen if the grapes and the containers they were kept in remained sterile through the experiment. He inserted ... War Communism And The Russian Civil War After the Tsar regime was overthrown in 1917, Russia experienced further discontent as its people carried out revolution and civil war (Modern World History: Russia 1905 41). From these occurrences, Russia then became the first communist state in the world. The Bolsheviks had become the ruling party after taking over the Provisional Government in the revolution of November 1917. Vladimir Lenin had been the leader of this party. There was a bitter civil war between the Communists who were the Reds and the opposition being the Whites. As a final point the Bolsheviks defeated their enemies in the Russian Civil War that lasted for 3 years and ended in 1920. The Russians had given them peace terms that they found them difficult to comply to and too severe. War Communism had been implemented by Lenin in 1918 because of the needs of the Civil War. The Russian economy was now aimed at providing the supplies it needed for the army (Modern World History: War Communism and Red Terror). The Bolsheviks party decided to move away from state capitalism because they felt the need to intensify authority, through communism (Reaction and Revolution: Russia 1894 1924 Third Edition: War Communism). Lenin introduced harsh restrictive policies to create the new communist rule. All aspects of life in Russia were controlled by the Bolsheviks as they implemented severe terms upon its people. Social, political and economic areas of life had to become subordinate to the aim of winning the Civil War (Reaction and Revolution: Russia 1894 1924 Third Edition: War Communism). The aim of War Communism was to bring industry and agriculture under central control. Thus the policy of centralization was put into play. This concentrated mainly on the political and economic center of Russia. In addition this created a great increase of Bolshevik influence. There was development within the factories through Bolsheviks influence. Lenin then put a Decree on Nationalism. • 4. Principles of Management Essay Goal Setting: A Managers Role vs. the Employee s Role How do you get your employees to perform better? Are your employees focused, motivated, organized and driven? What goals have been established for your employees? These are a few of the many questions I asked to multiple managers within the company that I work for. Being a relatively new employee, working there for a little over a year, I wanted to ask these questions. Otherwise, if I m not organized, they won t be organized out on the job and in the office. Pillar three, direct is next. This is where the manager simply flips on the switch and turns on the lights for the employees. They are given the goals that have been established for them and have been released. • 5. Dictatorship to Democracy Overnight in Indonesia Dictatorship to Democracy Overnight Indonesia is a country in Southeast Asia that was under a military dictatorship for 32 years. The dictatorship era started after the failure of communist coup d état by Indonesia s Communist Party in 1966. General Suharto, the one who had the biggest role in failing the coup d état, ousted the first president and established an autocratic anti communist regime known as the New Order, which attracted political and economic support from Western governments during the Cold War. At the beginning of this era, he said he would practice a kind of semi direct democracy, while later, even the news in newspapers was controlled by the government. In contrast to the New Order era government s reaction to separatist movements in Indonesia, the reformation era government in its early days made a mistake by giving a referendum to East Timor, a province in central Indonesia that had longed to form its own country since the New Order era. The referendum was to stay with Indonesia or to stand as an independent country, and the province chose the latter choice. This influenced other provinces that are not satisfied with the reformation era government due to the centralized development in certain parts of the country to start separatist movements. Even though Indonesia was led by a dictator during 1966 1998, there were still elections during the period. The election at that time was to elect one of the three political parties to get their members as new members of House of Representatives. Since there were only three political parties, each time there was going to be an election, the campaigns never ended up in chaos and the election ended in peace. After General Suharto was ousted in 1998, there was some kind of a party craze , everyone intended to make their own political party, without any limitation from the government. Consequently, in the 1999 election, people had to choose from 48 political parties. • 6. King Lear Feminist Analysis When interpreted from a feministic perspective, it is apparent that the story of King Lear and The Winter s Tale contains misogynistic implications. While the three sisters in King Lear were fallen victims to the misogynistic societal needs, Hermoine in The Winter s Tale also suffered from temptress accusations. The ingratitude that the women endured from male authorities who viewed women stereotypically, claims how both plays challenged gender roles and suggested that women were wicked, sexually deviant, and the cause of all issues. Moreover, women who lived during the Shakespearean period like the female protagonist in these plays, lived in misogynistic society s due to the lack of equality that was implemented during this time period. In the Shakespearean play, King Lear, the feministic attributes were tested when Lear asked his three daughters, which of you shall we say doth with merit challenge (1.1.49 51) which legitimized a man s authority over women by using a women s emotions to boost a man s ego. If Lear had three sons rather than three daughters, receiving affection to get the largest bounty (1.1.50) would not have occurred but because women were portrayed as emotional, Lear quantifying the love that each daughter had for him was appropriate. This demonstrates the first misogynistic approach towards women in King Lear. Over the past three or four years from 2012 onwards, the price of the stock has fallen from around $14 to around $9. A reasonable growth rate for the company in the future would be around 1 to 2%, taking into account of macroeconomic conditions and changes in consumer preferences. However, since Coca Cola is a global brand with relatively large market share, the duration of decline in company performance will be shorter. As an approximation, the growth of the company will grow around 2% a year. Dividend Discount Model The dividend discount model (DDM) is a method for valuing the price of a stock by using past historical data to predict future dividends and then discounting them back to present value. It can be deduced that if the value obtained from the DDM is higher than what the shares are currently trading at, then the stock is undervalued. In other words, the value of a stock is equal to the future value of all the dividends, discounted by an appropriate risk adjusted rate. This is because no stock is ultimately worth more than what it will provide investors in terms of current and future dividends. To calculate the value for a stock, the formula is given: From part (3), the discount rate is 5.38% and from part 4, the growth rate is 2%. On average, the dividend return per share is 22.61c. • 11. The Impact Of The Berlin Wall The Berlin Wall divided Germany into the East and West because of opposing ideas of the future for Germany. Germany was weak and pliable after barely surviving Nazi Germany, so the vulnerable country could have been formed into anything and the major powers knew this. The Soviet Union wanted a communist Germany and the major democracies America, Britain, and France wanted a democratic Germany. Because of these opposing ideas, Germany was split into the East and West, each living an entirely different life depending on the country of influence. When the Berlin Wall fell, though, neither side was as it was before; the country had changed in almost every way. This essay analyzes how the Berlin Wall changed Germany, focusing on Berlin, in many different aspects and lenses. The essay will examine how the people, the economy, the government, religion, and literature were affected by this great divide. This essay will also explain how America influenced German culture through integrating Western culture during the Wall in the West and after the Wall in both sides. To what extent was Germany, especially Berlin, similar and different politically, economically, and culturally from how it was before the Berlin Wall was built to when it was torn down? • 13. Shopping Experience With Sprouts Farmer s Market Essay I split my food shopping between a suburban enclave in Franklin, TN and my parent s country house in Columbia, TN. There are a multitude of lifestyle discrepancies between suburban and country living, and I suspected that this would be evident in the retail food options offered. Columbia grocery stores are either large big box grocers or small regional stores. These stores historically service more conventional food options. Franklin s larger and more affluent population allows for more diversity in alternative and health food stores. I chose to observe a local Kroger Grocery Store in Columbia, and contrasted that shopping experience with Sprouts Farmer s Market in Franklin. The separate shopping experiences elucidated that retail food options are contingent on the expectations, comprehension and financial flexibility of the customers and the stores. I visited the Kroger Grocery Store around eight on Sunday morning. The patron demographic was primarily older than 55 and African American. The store has provided groceries for the community for at least fifteen years. The store was clean and organized, but there was a slight dingy appearance that comes with older stores. The store has been remodeled and remerchandised, but the dark lighting and worn floors disclose the stores true age. Very few diseases produce such a rash so differentiating between them from others is simple. Herpes simplex virus (HSV) can produce such a rash but only occasionally. If there isn t a rash or it hasn t developed yet then shingles can be difficult to diagnose. Apart from the rash the other symptoms (fever, headache, possible sensitivity to light and pain) can be linked to many other conditions. The Tzanck smear is helpful in determining an acute infection of herpes virus though it doesn t distinguish between HSV and VZV. If you suspect that its shingles a trip to your doctor can help diagnose if the rash hasn t produced yet. A simple blood test can determine if you have VZV specific IgM antibodies in your blood. This particular antibody only appears when you have chickenpox or shingles, never when the virus is dormant. In larger laboratories they collect lymph from one of the blisters to test for the VZV DNA or to look with an electron microscope for virus particles. • 15. Analysis Of Digging By Seamus Heaney Seamus Heaney, one of the most world renowned poets in Ireland, takes pride in his past memories as a kid, implementing literacy strategies in majority of his poems to share his background. Memories ultimately builds the foundation of an individual, developmenting both negative and positive experiences that define a person. Heaney expresses these experiences by utilizing numerous devices, such as diction, imagery, and tone, to highlight the sensation of physical interactions that he feels. In one of his poems, Digging , Heaney starts the first stanza with a rhyme scheme, The squat pen rests; snug as a gun. (Heaney 2) This quote provides a description of the shovel and pinpoints as certain burden that Heaney feels about the shovel. The words snug as a gun conveys that the shovel gives a sense of violence and force. However, Heaney must accept the fact that digging is a tradition inherited from his father and doesn t want to disappoint him. As a result, this thought sets a respectful tone towards his father in the first stanza and continues on with imagery, describing the action of digging, Under my window, a clean rasping sound, When the spade sinks into gravelly ground. (Heaney 3) This reference is defined through Heaney s perspective of his father digging outside. This childhood memory sparks deep descriptions of actions held within the poem, concentrating on sound, smell, and sight to feature the response that digging has on Heaney. The hearing of the digging outside the window proposes that Heaney is writing exactly what he remembers, connecting to the thematic theme of memories and how it shapes the understanding of an individual. The memory signifies an important experience in Heaney s life, exemplifying the control that comes in digging and connects this to the control he has over his life. In addition, in stanzas 8 to 12, Heaney s focal point rests on his rustic Irish past and the introduction of Heaney s family tradition. This past memory frames the roots and basis in which he grew up on and expands his perception of digging through the linkage of his father and grandfather, By God, the old man could handle a spade. Just like his old man. (Heaney 15) From this sentiment, digging ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The professional is educated, has a clean appearance, well spoken, and treats others with respect and integrity. When a person is not professional it reflects poorly on the company. I have experienced unprofessional behavior quite often. I have seen nurses, and other medical professionals, act unprofessional. I will share a story of a very unprofessional situation. This situation put me in a position where I had to make a moral and legal decision and take the appropriate action. Two nurse aids were bathing a man that was in a coma. He had a penal implant from having prostate cancer. The implant was a pump. While bathing him the girls pumped his penis up, took pictures and sent the pictures to my phone along with derogatory remarks. The girls thought this was funny. I did not. I thought it was extremely unprofessional, and degrading to that patient. The girls were my friends, so the decision I had to make was not easy. I went to my nurse manager and took the appropriate action and steps. The girls did lose their jobs. I did feel bad for them, but I felt worse for that man. I had to do what was right. It is often said that the European s chief motives for exploration were God, gold, and glory . Another thing that propelled the Europeans was the search for gold and other riches in far off lands through sea routes. Claudius told Laertes that Hamlet was responsible for everything. Laertes then decides to avenge his father by plotting with Claudius to killing Hamlet. For example, Laertes said So mortal that, but dip a knife in it, where it draws blood no cataplasm so rare, collected from all simples that have virtue under the moon, can save the thing from death that is but scratched withal. (Shakespeare 233) As a result, Laertes goes out of his way to plot Hamlets death by dipping the tip of his sword in poison. Like Hamlet, Laertes shared the same passion of revenge, which ultimately lead to Laertes s downfall. For example, during the duel between Hamlet and Laertes, Hamlet stabs Laertes with his own poisoned sword that causes his death Why as a woodcock to mine own springe, Osric. I am justly killed with mine own treachery. (Shakespeare 279) Therefore, Laertes illustrates that after his father s death Laertes had one goal in mind and that was to avenge his father by killing Hamlet. This lead the Laertes s death because he became so obsess with vengeance, that he did not account for Hamlet to use his poison sword against him in his plot to kill ... • 27. Madame Bovary, By Gustave Flaubert In the classic literary novel Madame Bovary, by Gustave Flaubert, is the family of Bovary s in which Charles and Emma Bovary are the focal point in the story. The setting of the story takes place in France during the 1700s where class distinctions were prominent. In this novel, there is a theme surrounding the idea of the social class hierarchy. In the world of Madame Bovary, Emma is stuck in conflict with the middle class of the bourgeoisie, and between the upper and lower bourgeoisie, and the working class who are the proletariats. Even though Emma Bovary may just be a desperate romantic looking for love and is trying to live a romanticized life from the novels she read when she was younger, the lives of the Bovary s are affected by the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As these sequences of events are told from Madame Bovary, Emma is trying to raise herself into the upper bourgeoisie class where wealth, power, intelligence, and the arts lie. As described by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engles in the Communist Manifesto, The bourgeoisie has torn away from the family its sentimental veil, and has reduced the family relation to mere money relation. (8) In my own opinion, these two are talking about how being in the bourgeoisie class breaks down family relationships and values, and becomes more of a focus on obtaining the means of greater status and wealth. In Emma Bovary s case, she begins to neglect her own daughter Berthe, and takes advantage of Charles s naiveness to try and meet up with her lovers (Both Leon and Rudolph). This also puts the Bovary family into debt as Emma keeps expenditure high to achieve a lifestyle she wants. This can be seen when she makes trips and buys gifts to go see Leon in Paris. By building up the family debt, it puts the Bovary into the lower bourgeoisie class. Emma has sold several of their belongings and even the rights to Charles s family estate. In part, she also has taken out loans from Lheureus, which has been taking advantage of Emma s desperation to see her lover Leon. In part three, chapter seven of Madame Bovary, we learn that the officers come to the Bovary s house in Yonville to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 28. Representation Of Symbolism In Herman Melville s Moby Dick In Herman Melville s Moby Dick, the white whale has been a representation of many things, including God, nature and specific origins of life that are beyond the control of mankind. The quest to hunt down Moby Dick by the Pequod is seen as symbolic. For Ahab, slaying the sperm whale is the main goal in his life. This can be extended symbolically so that the sperm whale represents everybody s goals. His vengeance towards the sperm whale is similar to man s struggle in contradiction of destiny. The only way out from Ahab s vision is often seen through the Pequod s unusual meetings, called gams, with other ships. Upon finishing this novel, the only representation that Moby Dick itself can be seen as, is a goal. Melville implies that humans in general need to have a goal in life, or stating that such a goal can destroy one if no one ever attains it. Although this novel was revolved around a white whale, it was not the only sea creature that played an important role. The white whale was not the only life lesson represented in Melville s Moby Dick, I argue that the giant squid carries numerous representations, the sharks represent human nature and the brit represent human consciousness. In chapter 59 of the novel, Melville highlights the significance of the form of the giant squid. Dagoo is the character who first spots this white mass that he believes looks like Moby Dick. He and Ahab inaccurately mistake this giant squid for Moby Dick because of the white color. Due to this ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 29. Napoleon s Influence In Italy Research Paper In north Italy, roots of struggles between city states still plagued their relationships. Their failure to unite reduced this potential to compete with other European powers and therefore became political satellites in a continent of powerful nations. The abrupt switch from the Mediterranean to the Atlantic and Indian oceans for new sources of trade sent the maritime economy of Italian cities into decline. Direct access to the Atlantic became the primary source of wealth for european countries like Spain and Portugal. Challenges to the Church s authority in earlier centuries failed to bring down the papacy, and in the 16th century it stood strong in face of the Protestant Reformation. It did however, loose much of its influence in Europe. Consequently, the Pope was able to establish its own house and enlarged the Papal States under which it functioned. So people are willing to sacrifice more commuting time to live in these suburban communities. From development perspective, irrational development overrules reasonably urban planning, and led to unprecedented development in suburbs. Another factor that contributes to urban sprawl is rise in population, the fact that the number of people live in cities exceed the capacity means people have to move out. The last reason could be people s preference, people want larger homes, more rooms, bigger balconies and bigger lawns, so when it is economically feasible, people will move to suburban. Some of the negative effects of urban sprawl include increased public expenditure, because to develop these suburbs, the cities have bring more infrastructure and the money usually comes from tax payer. • 31. Vertigo Film Techniques Essay Hitchcock makes use of a number of techniques in Vertigo and brings them together to make a film that is considered to be one of his greatest masterpieces. Through the use of colour, lighting, camera movement, dialogue and characterisation, Hitchcock produces a film that fascinates and intrigues us. One of the key techniques, which Hitchcock makes, use of in Vertigo is the different use of colour. He chooses certain colours due to their symbolic connotations and then uses them to contrast different characters. He frequently uses green and red, for example when Scottie meets Madeleine for the first time, the restaurant is decorated in red with the visitors wearing mainly dark clothing. Green is quickly established as Madeleine s colour as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The lighting used by Hitchcock also serves to portray Madeleine as a fantasy woman, using the lighting to highlight her face. As Madeleine passes by Scottie in the restaurant she is bathed in a soft light which makes her all the more noticeable against the backdrop of a dimly lit restaurant. Furthermore, as she passes by him, she is shown in a full body shot in the center of the frame, which Hitchcock uses to create an overwhelming sense of romance. Here, Madeleine is the desired object clearly separated from her mundane surroundings. The viewer is aggressively confronted with Madeleine s image and this allows us to be swept up in the romantic fantasy along with Scottie. The lighting used in this scene actively draws the viewer to her features and ensures that all attention is on her. The audience are enticed and seduced by her and this stretches to Scottie as well as we can see that he is drawn to her and has to make an effort to be covert. The scene begins with the camera moving towards a door made of radiant red glass. The camera then moves to from Scottie s position at the bar. Scottie does not see Madeleine directly therefore the camera does not directly occupy his point of view. Madeleine appears and pauses. She appears through a doorway, which may suggest that there is something in her past that will reemerge. • 32. Sibling Relationships And Family Relationships Over time the relationships you have with your siblings change, you can start out not liking each other and then in later life being to love or tolerate each other ( Brothers, Sisters and Aging Parents , 2014). Late adulthood is defined as being over the age of sixty five (Later Adulthood, n.d.). The sibling relationships is forced relationships that are maintained by the siblings to foster a lifelong relationship (Martin, Anderson, Rocca, 2005). Siblings play very different roles for each other, friend, competitor, manager, and teacher (as cited in Martin et al., 2005). Sibling relationships can be of three different types: Brother and brother, sister and sister, and brother and sister, all three will be discussed. Brother and Brother relationships out of the three types seem to have the least amount of telephone contact of all the types (Spitze Trent, 2006). Tend to help each other more with giving help to each other than receiving help from each other, brothers tend to help with giving advice over helping each other with transportation (Spitze Trent, 2006). Brothers would rather receive help with child care then be the brother providing the child care (Spitze Trent, 2006). Brother relationships tend to be completive with each other trying to outdo each other. Brothers tend to visit each other about three times a month (Spitze Trent, 2006). Brothers tend to help each other with repairs more than any other sibling type (Spitze Trent, 2006). Sister and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Joyce seems to have conceived Dubliners as his offering of a sacred book to the Irish Literary Movement s attempts to spiritually arouse Ireland so that she might throw off the chains binding her to her oppressor, England. Joyce s sacred book, however, does not flatter his countrymen by strengthening their claims to be chosen of people of the modern world and not to be made in the heroic image of the mythical historical Cuchulain; rather, it allows them to take a good look at themselves in a nicely polished looking glass so that they might see the pretentiousness of their claims. From one perspective only a partial story is told, which can seem bias or can be completely wrong. This is seen in the Spanish American War from the perspective of Americans. It would seem that it is the Spanish s fault for the destruction of the USS Maine, but once a different perspective is taken, it is realized that the explosion came from the inside of the USS Maine.
