The Negative Impacts Of Hurricanes
Hurricanes are some of the costliest and most dangerous events that happen in our world. Many
historical hurricanes like Harvey, Katrina, Sandy have killed hundreds of people and cost billions of
dollars to repair the damages. But many reform bills and agencies throughout the years have either
improved humanitarian conditions or became under tremendous scrutiny by the public for its lack of
assistance. In addition, there have been many technological advances made to help people prepare
before and after the storm. Hurricanes have altered many people s lives in one way or another and
have caused people to always be prepared for potential impact.
Hurricanes have always had a tremendous impact on the history of the United States. According ...

Hurricane Katrina left more than 80% of New Orleans flooded and caused more than 1.800 deaths
(NOAA). Meteorologist and storm tracker Jim Cantore said that Katrina sets the bar for how bad a
hurricane can be. Hurricane Katrina also caused major damage to the NFL s New Orleans Saints
stadium, the Superdome, and caused many NFL officials, including the New Orleans Saints Owner
Tom Benson to speculate whether New Orleans would ever be sufficient enough to ever play an NFL
game again. Hurricane Katrina also caused a major drop in the population of New Orleans. Between
2000 and 2006, there was more than a 50% drop in population (NOAA). The NOAA said, It was one
of the largest displacements of a population since the Great Depression. Hurricane Katrina was a very
catastrophic storm that left a major impact in New Orleans, but it also affected how other agencies run
their operations.
In 1979, President Jimmy Carter created the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) that
was charged with the task of responding to natural disasters that are deemed too much for local and
state officials (Wikipedia). FEMA has always been a polarizing agency, but it especially became
polarized after it joined the Department of Homeland Security in 2003. Many people wanted FEMA to
stay independent like Michael Brown, who was appointed FEMA director by George W. Bush in
January 2003, said that it would fundamentally sever FEMA from its core functions. In 2005, FEMA

In the Victorian era, the role of a woman is to be the perfect wife for their husband and a attentive
mother for their children. In Lady of Shalott, Tennyson comments women s changing roles in society,
as he utilizes the medieval setting to contrast Victorian values in patriarchal societies. The Lady of
Shalott embodies the woman who abandons her social responsibility in her for love as it leads towards
death; due to the fact, that she abandoned her own role. It emphasizes the representations of both ...

When viewing the different gender roles, the poem explains how men are shown to be in the public
sphere of dominance, whereas the women s private sphere, is distinguished by domesticity and
obedience. However, the Lady of Shallot being trapped within the walls of the tower has found
fulfillment. It is also could be possible that the Lady of Shalott who faces captivity has the wants to
find comfort instead of trying to escape from her prison. In Joseph Chadwick s (1986) work he
explains how the Lady of Shalott engulfs herself into her own work to make herself seem as if she was
a free person even though she is trapped. It may be arguable how she deals with it, but by her
suppressed feelings she was able to save herself from the insanity of isolation and it may build her

Aristotle s Rhetorical Rhetoric On The Human Soul
Aristotle s Rhetorical Rhetoric Aristotle, a famous philosopher, is one of the most renowned Greek
scholars, and was an influential force in ancient Greece and in modern society. He was the head of the
Macedon royal academy, where he taught Alexander the Great, his most famous pupil. He founded the
famous Lyceum in Athens later in his life, which is portrayed in Raphael s painting School of Athens.
Aristotle is known for his interest in nature and science, and his emphasis on empirical evidence to
prove his points has become the keystone of modern scientific research. As a result, one of the topics
he studied is the cause of human difference. He discusses in Book I of his series Politics the nature of
the human soul and how different ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Such an egotistical belief is expressed when Aristotle describes how the soul rules the body with a
despotical rule, whereas the intellect rules the appetites with a constitutional and royal rule (Aristotle,
5). By drawing a relationship between the intellect and fair rule, Aristotle appeals to the Greeks: if
their form of government is truly the best, then Aristotle s vision of the model citizen must be as well.
Similarly, Aristotle s descriptions of the superiority and inferiority of certain groups are also
dependent on his familiarity with each group. Since Plato s Academy, which preached an elitist
philosophy (Welch, Marshall and Billig, 10), was mostly male (Reeve), Aristotle ranks males over
females, fathers over mothers, and husbands over wives. Similarly, Aristotle places masters over
slaves as he was a free citizen living among other free citizens; by corollary of such an authority based
dynamic, he also ranks natural rulers above subjects. Finally, as Aristotle had only lived in Greece
before Politics was published, he had no personal exposure to the barbarian Persians, and thus stated
that Hellenes, a term describing all Greeks unified together, were superior to the Persians
(Biography.com). These explanations are not grounded in any sort of empirical evidence; rather,
Aristotle classifies groups statuses

Animal Hunting Satire
The bird stops singing at once and then I m aware of all that could happen to me... just me, I m totally
by my own now. I find myself, waiting for something really bad to happen; that feeling inside found
its way out, yelling at me, saying that this is not my imagination, that something is actually wrong, I
wonder what could it be. Seconds freeze, floating on the air, a moment seems to be a life time, how
many lifetimes have I been here waiting? And what am I waiting for? Suddenly something hits me
strong at my ribs, some of them might be broken by the impact; I fell down, and think for an instant
that it s just a wild animal hunting. Good. I d rather be killed by a bear than by an actual person.

Ischemic Stroke Effect
Effects of Ischemic Stroke
When a brain artery is blocked, an ischemic stroke occurs and electrical activity is compromised. The
areas of injury in the brain are the core ischemic zone (the main area that blood flow is at its lowest)
and the ischemic penumbra (surrounding area). Neurons carry necessary oxygen and glucose to the
brain. When the brain is deprived of oxygen and glucose, brain cells, glial cells, and vascular cells are
affected depending on the amount of blood supply and duration of blocked blood supply to the area.
Cells in the penumbra have a chance of restoration if blood flow from surrounding arteries
compensate. For areas absent of blood flow, hypoxic injury occurs and cells go through necrosis while
surviving cells may ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Metabolic demand on the body after a stroke can be increased, swallowing can be compromised,
interfering with nutrition. Wound healing can be impaired due to results of stroke such as mobility,
pain, sensory deficits, and changes in cognition. Basically, optimal healing may require assistance to
ensure cellular function maintains the nutrition and vascularity aspects needed to function adequately.
Ischemic stroke does not require genetic testing unless a genetic disease that affects clot formation and
coagulation is present such as polycythemia (Porth, 2011). Education and prevention regarding diet,
smoking, controlling hypertension, and other high risk habits is very important to prevent strokes or
the recurrence of strokes.
Body functions affected with an ischemic stroke are dependent on the brain artery of the vascular
deprivation and the area injured in the brain. The amount of blood flow and length of time determine
how much damage occurs. By understanding neural and vascular pathways as well as reactive healing
can help healthcare workers be prepared for expectations, limitations, and treatments for damage

Walmart Management And Strategy Of Walmart Essay
In 2014, Walmart announced a new president and CEO, Doug McMillion. McMillion had the duty of
taking over the world s largest company in respect to revenue, $473 billion, and the world s largest
private employer, 2.2 million associates. As it turned out, under McMillion s leadership, in 2015
Walmart experienced the first decline in its annual sales ever. Many people had predicted that Walmart
s better days had been behind them when McMillion became president. As a result of this decline in
annual sales, people questioned whether or not Walmart could return to the usual type of growth in
sales it had essentially earned every year since it s founding in 1962. To answer this question, some
possibly issues with the management and strategy of Walmart s business needed to be looked at in
depth. Some of these most important issues included: the recent increase in retail sales of the online
market compared to the discount retailer market, the state of Walmart s international business, and the
lacking performance of Walmart s Discount Store, SAM s Clubs, and Neighborhood Markets
compared to their Supercenters. In this case analysis, we will include some possible resolutions that
will help Walmart with these issues and possibly allow them to begin growing their annual sales once
again. This plan will not stray from Sam Walton s Ten Rules for Building a Business, which set
Walmart apart from its competitors from its early stages. Before explaining these ideas of
improvement, we will

Description Of Human Papillomavirus
Human Pappillomavirus is most commonly known as HPV and is the most common sexually
transmitted disease with 360,000 new cases reported annually (Maurer 2016). HPV is a virus and it
should be noted that it is not a singular virus. It is made up 100 viruses that are closely related. The
difference however, is the severity of the specific strands of HPV. It is of the Family
Papillomarviridae, the Genus Alphapapillomavirus and the species Human Papillomavirus . The DNA
which characterizes HPV is distinctly circular shaped, double chain and within it holds an estimate
8000 base pairs. This virus is located within the body specifically inside of thin, flat cells which are
scientifically known as epithelial cells. Epithelial cells are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These two proteins interact and act on the proteins p53 and Rb which are tumor suppressor proteins.
The outcome of their interaction is the inactivation of these proteins in the host.
Immunity:
Research conducted by Castellsagué and a few other colleagues, in a control environment, indicate
that some women have naturally occurring protection within their bodies, against HPV owing to
naturally occurring antibodies. Studies conducted by the same researchers on animals identified the
neutralizing antibody to the virus as coat protein L1 (Castellsagué, Naud, Chow, et al. 2014).
Recombinant L1 proteins have the ability to impromptu self assemble to become a highly
immunogenic structure which closely resembles the natural surface of native papillomavirus virions.
Infectious Disease Information: HPV, as earlier stated is not a single virus: it is a group of 100 viruses.
The most common mode of transmission for the virus is sexual contact. It is in fact estimated that
every sexually active adult will be infected with at least one type of HPV at some point in their life.
There is a reported 6 million new infections every year in the US alone, with a bulk of these being
among teenagers and people in their early 20 s (Ault Pahud 2015). It is documented as the main cause

According to American Addiction Centers, alcoholism causes a person to face problems in their life,
from their work to their home, and they cannot control their drinking (3). They also experience
withdrawal symptoms when they do not drink (3). Twain mentions this physiological effect in
Huckleberry Finn, referring to it as delirium tremens. Delirium tremens is a severe form of alcohol
withdrawal that results in sudden mental or nervous system changes(4). Pap, the father of the
protagonist, is one of the characters that reveal their alcohol addiction. Pap is the abusive, racist, and
ignorant character that constantly drinks and revolves his life around alcohol. In the story, Huck
describes a psychotic episode that Pap experiences. He chased me round and round the place with a
clasp knife, calling me the Angel of Death, and saying he would kill me... (5). Twain writes about one
of the dangers of alcoholism being the withdrawal symptoms that an alcoholic experiences. The
human body and mind is not in its natural state and alcohol is the reason for that. One can see that this
can happen and delirium tremens is a legitimate medical condition. This part of the story highlights
the danger that Huck encountered due to Pap s drinking. He was chased around by his father who
thought he was an Angel of Death. There are other signs and symptoms of alcoholism in Huckleberry

The Takata Corporation Case
The Takada family founded Takata Corporation in 1933. Originally the firm manufactured parachute
static lines as well as other textiles. In the 60s Takata began to shift towards the automobile safety
industry by selling seat belts to car manufacturers. The corporation supplied the first Japanese car
manufacturer to have seat belts as part of the vehicle s standard design. Takata found success in the

its strategic decision to enter the automobile safety industry Takata was reaping the benefits. The firm
commanded a major portion of the airbag market, eventually becoming one of the top three airbag
manufacturers in the automotive industry. However, despite the company s early contributions to
automobile safety, recent events have tarnished the firm s reputation. Takata has continually failed to
address and correct a potentially fatal malfunction within in its airbag design. Decisions, driven by a
desire to reduce production costs, have forced the company to abandon its corporate social
responsibility, harming various stakeholders in the process. It is unfortunate that the once respected
firm has irreparably damaged its image. In an industry where defects and mistakes by manufacturers
can potentially kill consumers, public trust in the firm is immensely important. Consumers need to

Evaluation Of Alfred Hitchcock, Dial
Evaluation of Alfred Hitchcock, Dial M for Murder.
Validity as an auteur can be found belief that true auteurs set the standard and change the way we view
film. More so, an auteur has the incredible responsibility of changing the way we look at the world
and that is their greatest goal.
Alfred Hitchcock is a director and artist in his own right as he needs little introduction to most
moviegoers. His work as a creative entrepreneur during his time in the budding age of film has created
a series of classics that continue to define a standard in crime, thriller and suspense cinema. As many
early critics of film were skeptic of their authenticity as an art form, Hitchcock proceeded to build
upon the groundwork set before him by exploring methods with which lured the audience into
emotional involvement in film. Over time, his mastered technique often reflected in his plot
developments as he proceeded to sway the interest, attention and opinion of his audience to his liking.
Such manipulations would cause the audience to bend the rules of conventional morality. Such
technique had been previously unparalleled and proceeds to be the standard of good film making
today. Even in his early films such as The Man Who Knew Too Much, Hitchcock s ability to evoke
and conflict emotional attachments in his audience was quite apparent as it was not uncommon for a
quintessential bad guy in his film to transition into a protagonist simply based on plot and character

Temporal Lobe Amnesia Case Study
According to Pinel (2013), medial temporal lobe amnesia is amnesia or loss of memory that is
associated with bilateral damage to the medial temporal lobes (p.478). H.M. s case was revolutionary
to the study of human memory. Prior to H.M. s surgery, it was shown that the removal of one medial
temporal lobe was effective treatment for patients with a unilateral temporal lobe focus. H.M. suffered
from on average one generalized seizure per week and many partial seizures per day (Pinel, 2013,
p.260). Anticonvulsant medication s proved to be ineffective for the treatment of H.M. s seizures
(Pinel, 2013). H.M. s doctors ran tests including an electroencephalography or EEG, in which they
proposed that the H.M. s convulsions originated from the center of the medial portions of both his left
and right temporal lobes (Pinel, 2013, p.260). His doctors believes that since the removal of one

Life Expectancy At The Philippines
Other reason why there was a deficiency in the SSS was because investments are linked to political
and social considerations, limiting income and growth. Labor law, rules and regulations that protect
workers economic security provides ways for employers to avoid the cost of social insurance, hence
poor enrollment in SSS (DeCastro, 2015).
Unlike Indonesia, the Philippines have a mandatory retirement age at 65 years old, even though
individuals can retire as early as 60. But the life expectancy at birth for the Philippines is lower
compared to Indonesia. The 2013 life expectancy at birth for the Philippines was 68.7 years , although
the estimate life expectancy at the age of 65 using a life table was 13.5 years . The pension age for
Indonesia is 9 years lower than the Philippines right now, but will gradually increase to 65 by 2043.
According to the UN Population Division, the Philippines are currently experiencing decreasing child
dependency ratio, while old age dependency ratio will hover below 10% until it starts rising to 14%
around 2050.
Conclusion
Unlike Thailand, Indonesia and Vietnam, the Philippines have a relatively complicated benefit
calculation. Replacement rates were too high for non high earners, up to 78.1% for an average earner,
therefore not achieving the pension goal of providing old age financial security. Learning from the
Philippines, we see that actuarial valuations need to be done every few years to review the

Moreover, Brinkley (2006) observed that the hurricane indicated a clear defective levee system and
the Orleans City gave a true picture of American government s neglect, prejudice, inequalities and
total dysfunction of its engineering sector especially in the city. This was evident at every stage before
the occurrence of the hurricane and after. There were several failures in the logistics concerning
disaster preparations and management, engineering malfunctions and failures as was revealed after
Hurricane Katrina (Galea Brewin, 2007). The paper tends to highlight the environmental crimes
committed before and after hurricane Katrina. The paper also vividly illustrates the lessons learned
from the disaster and possible ways of improving from the shortfalls. Lastly, it concludes the main
findings of the effects of the Hurricane Katrina.
Environment Crimes before the Hurricane Katrina
For a long time before the human driven developments along the Mississippi Delta, the Delta was well
maintained by the sediments that replenished the wetlands. These sediments helped clear the
accumulation of sands which were brought by erosions (Kessler Parker, 2006). These wetlands and
barrier islands protected the region along the Gulf Coast for thousands of years (Kirk, 2012). Over the
years, the population along the Delta region rose and most people had a negative perception on the
perennial flooding. Levees that were erected on the banks to act as protection soon become

Analyzing The Movie Top Gun
The first movie that comes to mind when I think of product placement is Top Gun. I personally do not
like this movie but my boyfriend watches it on a monthly basis which means so do I. Tom Cruise is a
big tough guy who enters The Top Gun Naval Fighter Weapons School to work on his pilot skills. He
consistently attempts to steal the attention of his beautiful flight instructor by trying to be a big shot
which causes tension with the rest of his team. The movie showcases Tom s incredible flight skills that
are extremely risking but very impressive. Once he gets ahold of his ego, he learns how to be a great
pilot, a great team player, and he even gets the girl. Because my boyfriend loves this movie so much,
he owns it on DVD and that is how we access the content. While it s the story that I don t enjoy, it

Essay on Steven King
Bio of Steven King Stephen King
Stephen Edwin King was born September 21, 1947in Portland, Maine, U.S. He is an American
novelist and short story writer whose many novels and story collections, and the numerous films
adapted from this large body of work, have established his reputation as the leading author of horror
fictions in contemporary literature, and with reviving the genre of horror fiction in the late 20th
century.
King graduated from the University of Maine in 1970 with a bachelor s degree in English. Abused by
a fanatically religious mother and ridiculed by her classmates, Carrie was the first of many novels in
which King blended horror, the macabre, fantasy, and science fiction. Among such works were Salem
s Lot ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
King s stories reverberate with subtexts. Carrie resonates with a residual dread of the women s
liberation movement. Salem s lot reflects America s post Watergate fear that corruption exists on every
level of society. Thinner (1984), published under the pseudonym Richard Bachman, applies
conspicuous consumption with the curse of anorexia nervosa. King typically adapts his metaphors
from the stock repertoire of horror fiction. IT (1986) shows childhood fears in the form of such classic
Universal Studio movie monsters as Frankenstein, Wolfman, and the Mummy. In Misery (1987) King,
not hesitating to be self referential, pictures a successful writer kidnapped by a crazily devoted fan.
The Dark Half (1989) fictionalizes his use of the Richard Bachman pseudonym, as a horror writer s
pen name becomes a threat to his existence.
King s major contribution to horror literature is to situate it within the general anxieties of
contemporary life. His focus is not on vampires, werewolves and such but on ordinary people faced
with these horrors and the darker horrors of the lost jobs, disintegrating families, mental breakdown,
and all the other fears that haunt the atomic age. His novels vindicate the dreads of that age.
King also wrote the short stories collected in Night Shift (1978), as well as several novellas and
motion picture screenplays. Some of his novels were successfully adapted for the screen by such
directors as Brian De

Persuasive Essay On Prison Reform
Today, it seems almost incomprehensible that so many people with serious mental illnesses reside in
prisons instead of receiving treatment. Over a century and a half ago, reform advocates like Dorothea
Dix campaigned for prison reform, urging lawmakers to house the mentally ill in hospitals rather than
in prisons. The efforts undertaken by Dix and other like minded reformers were successful: from
around 1870 to 1970, most of the United States mentally ill population was housed in hospitals rather
than in prisons. Considering reformers made great strides in improving this situation over a century
and a half ago. Granted, mental hospitals in the late 19th and early 20th century were often badly run
and critically flawed, but rather than pushing for reform of these hospitals, many politicians lobbied
for them to close their doors, switching instead to a community based system for treating the mentally
ill. Although deinstitutionalization was originally understood as a humane way to offer more suitable
services to the mentally ill in community based settings, some politicians seized upon it as a way to
save money by shutting down institutions without providing any meaningful treatment alternatives.
This callousness has created a one way road to prison for massive numbers of impaired individuals
and the inhumane warehousing of thousands of mentally ill people. Nevertheless, there are things that
can be done to lower the rate mentally ill persons are being incarcerated. Such

No other ruling power could match in number or tactical effectiveness the unstoppable tide of Viking
ships that flooded Europe after the attack on Lindisfarne. (Jones 1984) Saint Alcuin himself expressed
his surprise that such an inroad from the sea could be made and no one at the time could fully
comprehend just how devastating Viking attacks would prove to be. Early warbands consisting of one
to five ships limited their expeditions to swift hit and run strikes on coastal settlements and religious
centers of Britain, Ireland, and France that came with little to no warning. (Carroll 2014) The longship
s contoured hull and shallow draught made it the perfect landing craft since Vikings could sail straight
into low lying harbors and onto beaches for immediate disembarking, taking inhabitants by surprise
and minimizing the chance of armed resistance. (Marsden 1995) Inland areas were not safe either;
Viking ships traveled extensively up the navigable rivers and estuaries of Europe to attack unguarded
towns and villages and make off with captured plunder before any force could be raised to stop them.
The success of these small Viking parties lay in their speed of movement and the surprise of their
onslaught against larger numbers, advantages they owed to the superior versatility of the longship.

The Slopes Of War By. Perez
In the historical fiction novel The Slopes of War by N.A. Perez, the author illustrates the gruesome
battle that befell the little market town of Gettysburg during the Civil War through the various
perspectives of all the people whom were immersed and affected. These people included young men
fighting, generals arguing about their plans and tactics, and innocent citizens who aided causalities
regardless of what color their uniform happened to be. Perspectives from both the Confederate and
Union armies are offered in the text to grasp a better understanding of all the thoughts occurring
throughout the entire battle, as well as before and after. Throughout the novel, Perez elucidates the
emotional and physical aspects of war the people endured, such as traumatizing, graphic images that
can serve as bad omens, and loss of loved ones. Also, the book further explains what war truly
signified, which was death. The positive results and overall effects of the war as described in the
novel, however, somewhat outweighs the negative causes and struggles. In the book Crispin written
by Avi, there is a particular quote in the novel on the first page in which reads, In the midst of life
comes death, in the midst of death comes life. This quote can be related to the novel in numerous
ways, and can be applied to life in general, too.

More Than Just A Game
The atmosphere warming up was silent, you could hear a pin drop. The field was a perfect shade of
green with a hint of dew on the tips of each piece of grass. Yesterday, my team AC Sandhills was
defeated 7 0 in our first game of the 2012 Mother s Day Tournament. There was no energy in anyone
at the moment, including myself. We thought the next game would just be like the first, another
blowout. We thought we were done in this tournament, but little did I know this would be the game
where everything would change. My coach JR noticed that we were not ourselves in our warmup. So
right before kickoff he gave us a speech about how to bounce back after a horrendous defeat. When I

what we had to do in the next game and we forgot about the last one. That s what I want you guys to

We walked out onto the field with a ton of energy but right as the whistle blew you could tell we were
not playing at all as a team. We were getting dominated all over the field. Pass after pass from the
other team, touching the ball was a gift for our team. Then, about 10 minutes into the game, a player

The Difference Between Arial And Helvetica
The drive to the core of absence is also evident in the realm of type design. In 1932, Beatrice Warde,
an American typographic expert, published an essay The Crystal Goblet , or known as Printing Should
Be Invisible , insists on an invisible or transparent typography in order to elevate the printed words. In
her essay, Warde adopted a metaphor that the design for typefaces should be as transparent as crystal
glass for wine (Warde, 1936, p.6). A typeface, as a container, is calculated to reveal and not to hide the
beautiful content which it is meant to contain. The design of the container should not call undue notice
to itself. Her theory of invisible typefaces is in line with Modernist simplicity as well as functionality,

They both are sans serif typefaces that are universally embraced by different applications. At first
glance, they seem extremely similar. But if designers examine the characters in each typeface closely,
the differences between them become apparent. Mark Simonson, an American graphic designer,
produced an analysis of these two typefaces, showing how much more refined Helvetica than that of
Arial (Simonson, 2001). The primary difference between the two is the treatments of their endings.
While Helvetica is vertically cut, Arial is slightly angled. For instance, the tail of the a is gently curved
in Helvetica, as is the first connection of the bowl to the stem, but not in Arial. Similarly, the top of the
t and the ends of the strokes in the C and S are perfectly horizontal in the former, but slightly angled in
the latter. Even though the distinguishing details are so tiny that cannot be noticed unless they are
scrutinized as Simonson has done. Yet it is these subtleties that constitute Helvetica a finer example of
design than Arial, especially for professionals. Functionally the two types are roughly equal, both are
admirably clear, but aesthetically Helvetica is

A Sorrowful Woman Short Story
Romance novels are typically based in a set pattern and Karen van der Zee s A Secret Sorrow is no
exception. Meanwhile, in Gail Godwin s A Sorrowful Woman , the romance aspect is not nearly as
focused on. While A Secret Sorrow is a nice, easy romance novel, the short story A Sorrowful Woman
is a much better example of literature, and portrays a much more unique message. The two stories
differ greatly when compared by their theme, by the role of motherhood and children, and by how
they are written. Theme is almost predictable in most romance novels. In A Secret Sorrow, the conflict
of Faye, the main character, not being able to have children is easily overcome by the power of love.
Faye and her future husband end up adopting children and having their happily ever after. In other
words, the theme is love conquers all. For a romance novel, this doesn t stray far from the pattern.
However, the other story, A Sorrowful Woman , has a completely different theme. In the story, the
woman is sick with an unknown illness and locks herself away. While she does have a loving, devoted
husband who does all he can to care for her and cheer her up, in the end, she still dies; a sad ending
completely unlike the first story. The husband would give her a sleeping draught (39) to help her
sleep, and would take her out to dinner dressed and ... beautiful again (40). Although the husband was

Gloria Steinem expresses her ideas and views on the character of Wonder Woman through her article

being influenced by this comic book character, has written several articles on the topic of the

perspective on Wonder Woman. Steinem argues in Wonder Woman: The problem is that the

she will still be helping with minor tasks, appreciating the accomplishments of others, and waiting to

most perceived role of a woman in a superhero comic, as men are usually perceived as being dominant
and powerful, while woman are distinguished as being submissive and vulnerable. As Steinheim
states, female children are left to think that they will not be able to accomplish such important tasks
that Superman or Batman accomplish and therefore may feel less confident in themselves, may feel

thanked them and sat down. I heard my name called once more; as a result, I looked up excitedly.
Instead of a medal, I received a small purple bag addressed to me. I opened it and noticed a small stuff
animal. I took it out and read the tag. It read: We knew you could do it! Love, Mom, Dad and Mason. I
smiled. Immediately following, the announcer called our team, Silvia s Gymnastics, for a first place
team award! Our entire team jumped up onto the podium and took our trophy. Our coach
congratulated us and pulled me aside to personally tell me how proud she felt about my
accomplishment. I thanked her and joined my parents on the bleachers. They congratulated me and we
drove home. When we arrived, my family all sat down together and ate ice cream cones as we
discussed my competition. Before this day, I felt frustrated with the sport; pessimism overtook my
psyche. Then, however, joyfulness filled my heart, and everything around me became so positive and
cheerful. I

Theme Of Norwegian Wood
Norwegian Wood is a nostalgic novel imbued by death, suicide and sexuality. Murakami describes a
Japanese youth beset by doubts, embedded in the Spleen and surrounding by dreams. The protagonist
and narrator, Watanabe, is remembering his past as a university student, while in a plane bound to
Hamburg. All his memories appear because of the song during the landing, Norwegian Wood by The
Beatles. The song brings him back twenty years earlier, during the Sixties in the middle of the
Japanese student revolution.
After this preamble, we discover the high school life of Watanabe and the original context on which
the whole story rely. The trio composed by him, Kizuki, his best friend and Kizuki s girlfriend, Naoko.

From the beginning of the novel, we feel that the different conceptions of what is to live to Watanabe
and Naoko will make their love story impossible. The distance is unbounded between the two
characters in their platonic relation, and take a geographical dimension early in the book. However
Watanabe does not hesitate. If he is uncertain about everything in his life, he want to live and is not
absorbed by Naoko s death drives. Likewise he is not attracted by the inhumanity of Nagasawa. Every
characters of the book are allegoric of Japanese and widely more generally human beeing. Here is the
strength of Murakami s work, beyond a very Japanese context firmly anchored in student turmoils of
the Sixties in Tokyo, story and characters are universal. Main subjects like suicide, responsibility,
depression and aspiration to live fully resonate in the reader s mind, and the very Japanese sensibility
that emerges from the work is transcended by

Blackberry s Success And Popularity Before Their Setbacks
Blackberry s success and popularity before their setbacks can be attained to their exporting approach
and strategies. Since Blackberry was formed and began manufacturing and selling their devices, they
have certainly made a household name and reputation particularly in the enterprise segment both
nationally and especially internationally. They previously secured market share in numerous countries
as they rapidly expanded. This could not have been done without effective exporting modes and
strategies. Unfortunately, as Blackberry s main downfall was their products remaining static so too
were their exporting strategies. Therefore, they must be further improved immediately in order to
properly rejuvenate Blackberry in order to become a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Unlike today, the absence of e commerce in the early 2000 s when Blackberry became consumer
focused partially led to the inability to offer a direct to market sales model where consumers can
purchase an unlocked phone directly from Blackberry themselves. Therefore, exporting was not a
main concern for Blackberry before when they faced strong demand. One way or another, carriers and
other middle agents would be motivated to figure out a way to get Blackberry devices into the hands
of consumers since they could get a nice piece of the huge profit pie as well. Manufacturing of
Blackberry was outsourced for a while to factories across the U.S, Mexico, and Europe in order to
meet the huge demand they faced at their peak. Blackberry formed strategic alliances with numerous
Electronic Manufacturing Suppliers (EMS) including their major ones Elcoteq, Jabil Circuit, Multi
Fineline Electronix Inc., Qalcomm Inc., and Marvell Technology Group who thereby took on
manufacturing and distributing roles for Blackberry. Blackberry s Research and Development has also
been globalized with operations in China, Germany, Britain, and the U.S aside from its main original
location in Waterloo. RIM had a significant head start in shipping methods, a larger carrier distribution
network, and extensive customer support allowed it to remain ahead of Apple and Android devices for
some time before succumbing to the

A Brief Summary Of Chapter One Of All Quiet On The Western...
Chapter one of the novel All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque (1928) gives
insight to the horrific realities soldiers have to face in World War I. Paul Baumer, the narrator and one
of the soldiers enlisted to fight for his country, tells the reader that they have just returned back to
camp after two weeks of fighting on the front lines. He also notes that more than half of their
Company of one hundred fifty men were lost in a gas attack the day before, and this lead to a surplus
of leftover food and supplies for the remaining soldiers. The main soldiers in the story visit their
friend, Kemmerich, in the hospital, whose leg has been amputated and who is on the verge of death.
Remarque uses imagery of Kemmerich in the hospital ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Paul reminisces about the times before he was a soldier, when he still had dreams and aspirations to
become a writer, but now, those dreams have become irrelevant and seemingly unreachable. He also
brings up the memories of him as a fresh soldier, required to do embarrassing as well as arduous tasks
which made the recruits tough and durable, prepping them for the harsh realities of war. Paul also
finally experiences the death of Kemmerich, but his mostly emotionless response to his death reveals
that soldiers do not and are unable to show their emotion. This type of thing occurs a lot, and the
soldiers do not really display their emotion and have lost their capability to properly mourn for their
lost brothers. The author juxtaposes the soldiers previous lives before they became who they are now
with the experiences they currently face to demonstrate how war destroys their sense of personality
and emotions. When Paul talks about the soldiers experiences first being recruited into the military, he
mentions how [they] recognized that what matters is not the mind but the boot brush, not intelligence
but the system, not freedom but drill (Remarque 22). Paul illustrates the fact that when soldiers are
recruited, the soldiers had to completely disregard themselves. The war has become their entire life,
and all that really mattered from that point of recruitment on was not their character or personality, but
their skill and how well they do on the battlefield. The author wants us to realize that war is a massive
detriment to the soldiers enlisted to fight for their country, because it rips away their dreams and
personalities, and forces them into an entire life

Literary Analysis Of Eveline
James Joyce s Eveline is a short story about a nineteen year old Eveline, who contemplates
abandoning a life she is accustomed to and moving to a distant land with a man she hardly knows. In
one hand she holds the weight of uncertain happiness, in the other, inevitable misery. Eveline needs to
make a choice between two contrasting lives; one in which she is a servant to her father, in other, a
respected wife. Following her mother s death, Eveline assumes the role of a parent and inherits all the
chores accompanying it. She works hard at home and the Stores (Joyce 74), but for all her troubles,
Eveline gets little respect in return. Now with one brother dead and other away on business, she is left
alone to keep the family together and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Being at the bottom of the hierarchy, Eveline s only means of escape is a man who will take her hand
in marriage.
Eveline s father is the second most important character in the story, yet Joyce chooses not to reveal his
name. That is because he is only a father in a biological sense, falling short at every other fatherly
duty. Mr.Hill is a failed provider who takes his offspring s earnings only to hand it back, allowing him
to feel like a man of the house . He is abusive and flaunts his dominance by threaten[ing] (Joyce 73)
Eveline well into her adulthood. The threats seem unprovoked and random, indicating father s
attempts to instill fear rather than curb or abolish an offending behavior. Compensating for his
failures, the father uses aggression and control to get what he wants. Her father was becoming old
lately, she noticed; he would miss her (Joyce 75), the narrator draws our attention to the aging of the
father and impending helplessness following it. Though Joyce does not clarify how the father will
miss Eveline, judging by his past conducts, it is safe to assume that he would miss Eveline s help
around the house and money the most. Still, as she contemplates leaving, Eveline sees good in him
and tries to balance her father s increasing capacity for violence by remembering three random acts of
kindness (Trudell) that seemingly undue all the wrong he has done in the past. No matter

Many historical hurricanes like Harvey, Katrina, Sandy have killed hundreds of people and cost billions of dollars to repair the damages. But many reform bills and agencies throughout the years have either improved humanitarian conditions or became under tremendous scrutiny by the public for its lack of assistance. In addition, there have been many technological advances made to help people prepare before and after the storm. Hurricane Katrina left more than 80% of New Orleans flooded and caused more than 1.800 deaths (NOAA). Meteorologist and storm tracker Jim Cantore said that Katrina sets the bar for how bad a hurricane can be. Hurricane Katrina also caused major damage to the NFL s New Orleans Saints stadium, the Superdome, and caused many NFL officials, including the New Orleans Saints Owner Tom Benson to speculate whether New Orleans would ever be sufficient enough to ever play an NFL game again. Hurricane Katrina also caused a major drop in the population of New Orleans. Between 2000 and 2006, there was more than a 50% drop in population (NOAA). The NOAA said, It was one of the largest displacements of a population since the Great Depression. Hurricane Katrina was a very catastrophic storm that left a major impact in New Orleans, but it also affected how other agencies run their operations. In 1979, President Jimmy Carter created the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) that was charged with the task of responding to natural disasters that are deemed too much for local and state officials (Wikipedia). FEMA has always been a polarizing agency, but it especially became polarized after it joined the Department of Homeland Security in 2003. Many people wanted FEMA to stay independent like Michael Brown, who was appointed FEMA director by George W. Bush in January 2003, said that it would fundamentally sever FEMA from its core functions. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Such an egotistical belief is expressed when Aristotle describes how the soul rules the body with a despotical rule, whereas the intellect rules the appetites with a constitutional and royal rule (Aristotle, 5). By drawing a relationship between the intellect and fair rule, Aristotle appeals to the Greeks: if their form of government is truly the best, then Aristotle s vision of the model citizen must be as well. Similarly, Aristotle s descriptions of the superiority and inferiority of certain groups are also dependent on his familiarity with each group. Since Plato s Academy, which preached an elitist philosophy (Welch, Marshall and Billig, 10), was mostly male (Reeve), Aristotle ranks males over females, fathers over mothers, and husbands over wives. Similarly, Aristotle places masters over slaves as he was a free citizen living among other free citizens; by corollary of such an authority based dynamic, he also ranks natural rulers above subjects. Finally, as Aristotle had only lived in Greece before Politics was published, he had no personal exposure to the barbarian Persians, and thus stated that Hellenes, a term describing all Greeks unified together, were superior to the Persians (Biography.com). The areas of injury in the brain are the core ischemic zone (the main area that blood flow is at its lowest) and the ischemic penumbra (surrounding area). Neurons carry necessary oxygen and glucose to the brain. When the brain is deprived of oxygen and glucose, brain cells, glial cells, and vascular cells are affected depending on the amount of blood supply and duration of blocked blood supply to the area. McMillion had the duty of taking over the world s largest company in respect to revenue, $473 billion, and the world s largest private employer, 2.2 million associates. As it turned out, under McMillion s leadership, in 2015 Walmart experienced the first decline in its annual sales ever. Many people had predicted that Walmart s better days had been behind them when McMillion became president. As a result of this decline in annual sales, people questioned whether or not Walmart could return to the usual type of growth in sales it had essentially earned every year since it s founding in 1962. To answer this question, some possibly issues with the management and strategy of Walmart s business needed to be looked at in depth. Some of these most important issues included: the recent increase in retail sales of the online market compared to the discount retailer market, the state of Walmart s international business, and the lacking performance of Walmart s Discount Store, SAM s Clubs, and Neighborhood Markets compared to their Supercenters. In this case analysis, we will include some possible resolutions that will help Walmart with these issues and possibly allow them to begin growing their annual sales once again. • 26. Essay on Steven King Bio of Steven King Stephen King Stephen Edwin King was born September 21, 1947in Portland, Maine, U.S. He is an American novelist and short story writer whose many novels and story collections, and the numerous films adapted from this large body of work, have established his reputation as the leading author of horror fictions in contemporary literature, and with reviving the genre of horror fiction in the late 20th century. King graduated from the University of Maine in 1970 with a bachelor s degree in English. Abused by a fanatically religious mother and ridiculed by her classmates, Carrie was the first of many novels in which King blended horror, the macabre, fantasy, and science fiction. Among such works were Salem s Lot ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... King s stories reverberate with subtexts. Carrie resonates with a residual dread of the women s liberation movement. Salem s lot reflects America s post Watergate fear that corruption exists on every level of society. Thinner (1984), published under the pseudonym Richard Bachman, applies conspicuous consumption with the curse of anorexia nervosa. King typically adapts his metaphors from the stock repertoire of horror fiction. IT (1986) shows childhood fears in the form of such classic Universal Studio movie monsters as Frankenstein, Wolfman, and the Mummy. In Misery (1987) King, not hesitating to be self referential, pictures a successful writer kidnapped by a crazily devoted fan. The Dark Half (1989) fictionalizes his use of the Richard Bachman pseudonym, as a horror writer s pen name becomes a threat to his existence. King s major contribution to horror literature is to situate it within the general anxieties of contemporary life. His focus is not on vampires, werewolves and such but on ordinary people faced with these horrors and the darker horrors of the lost jobs, disintegrating families, mental breakdown, and all the other fears that haunt the atomic age. His novels vindicate the dreads of that age. King also wrote the short stories collected in Night Shift (1978), as well as several novellas and motion picture screenplays. Some of his novels were successfully adapted for the screen by such directors as Brian De ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 27. Persuasive Essay On Prison Reform Today, it seems almost incomprehensible that so many people with serious mental illnesses reside in prisons instead of receiving treatment. Over a century and a half ago, reform advocates like Dorothea Dix campaigned for prison reform, urging lawmakers to house the mentally ill in hospitals rather than in prisons. The efforts undertaken by Dix and other like minded reformers were successful: from around 1870 to 1970, most of the United States mentally ill population was housed in hospitals rather than in prisons. Considering reformers made great strides in improving this situation over a century and a half ago. Granted, mental hospitals in the late 19th and early 20th century were often badly run and critically flawed, but rather than pushing for reform of these hospitals, many politicians lobbied for them to close their doors, switching instead to a community based system for treating the mentally ill. Although deinstitutionalization was originally understood as a humane way to offer more suitable services to the mentally ill in community based settings, some politicians seized upon it as a way to save money by shutting down institutions without providing any meaningful treatment alternatives. This callousness has created a one way road to prison for massive numbers of impaired individuals and the inhumane warehousing of thousands of mentally ill people. Nevertheless, there are things that can be done to lower the rate mentally ill persons are being incarcerated. Such ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

More importantly, Scandinavia s iron resources enabled the creation and widespread adoption of shipbuilding technologies that facilitated territorial expansion overseas, in particular the infamous Viking longship. (Jones 1984) Saint Alcuin himself expressed his surprise that such an inroad from the sea could be made and no one at the time could fully comprehend just how devastating Viking attacks would prove to be. Early warbands consisting of one to five ships limited their expeditions to swift hit and run strikes on coastal settlements and religious centers of Britain, Ireland, and France that came with little to no warning. (Carroll 2014) The longship s contoured hull and shallow draught made it the perfect landing craft since Vikings could sail straight into low lying harbors and onto beaches for immediate disembarking, taking inhabitants by surprise and minimizing the chance of armed resistance. (Marsden 1995) Inland areas were not safe either; Viking ships traveled extensively up the navigable rivers and estuaries of Europe to attack unguarded towns and villages and make off with captured plunder before any force could be raised to stop them. The success of these small Viking parties lay in their speed of movement and the surprise of their onslaught against larger numbers, advantages they owed to the superior versatility of the longship. In her essay, Warde adopted a metaphor that the design for typefaces should be as transparent as crystal glass for wine (Warde, 1936, p.6). The primary difference between the two is the treatments of their endings. While Helvetica is vertically cut, Arial is slightly angled. For instance, the tail of the a is gently curved in Helvetica, as is the first connection of the bowl to the stem, but not in Arial. Similarly, the top of the t and the ends of the strokes in the C and S are perfectly horizontal in the former, but slightly angled in the latter. Even though the distinguishing details are so tiny that cannot be noticed unless they are scrutinized as Simonson has done. Meanwhile, in Gail Godwin s A Sorrowful Woman , the romance aspect is not nearly as focused on. While A Secret Sorrow is a nice, easy romance novel, the short story A Sorrowful Woman is a much better example of literature, and portrays a much more unique message. The two stories differ greatly when compared by their theme, by the role of motherhood and children, and by how they are written. Theme is almost predictable in most romance novels. In A Secret Sorrow, the conflict of Faye, the main character, not being able to have children is easily overcome by the power of love. Faye and her future husband end up adopting children and having their happily ever after. In other words, the theme is love conquers all. For a romance novel, this doesn t stray far from the pattern. He also notes that more than half of their Company of one hundred fifty men were lost in a gas attack the day before, and this lead to a surplus of leftover food and supplies for the remaining soldiers. Paul also finally experiences the death of Kemmerich, but his mostly emotionless response to his death reveals that soldiers do not and are unable to show their emotion. This type of thing occurs a lot, and the soldiers do not really display their emotion and have lost their capability to properly mourn for their lost brothers. The author juxtaposes the soldiers previous lives before they became who they are now with the experiences they currently face to demonstrate how war destroys their sense of personality and emotions. When Paul talks about the soldiers experiences first being recruited into the military, he mentions how [they] recognized that what matters is not the mind but the boot brush, not intelligence but the system, not freedom but drill (Remarque 22). Paul illustrates the fact that when soldiers are recruited, the soldiers had to completely disregard themselves. The war has become their entire life, and all that really mattered from that point of recruitment on was not their character or personality, but their skill and how well they do on the battlefield. The author wants us to realize that war is a massive detriment to the soldiers enlisted to fight for their country, because it rips away their dreams and personalities, and forces them into an entire life ... It gave me chills to hear them play the fight song. It always made me so excited for game day, says Hansen. During football season, the band practices every weeknight that the weather allows them to. They work around other sports that use the football field for practice, which means that they typically do not start practice until around 9pm. Just because of the time they start does not effect how long they practice. Sometimes they do not finish until 11 or 12 at night. They strive for perfection and it shows on game day. • 47. Literary Analysis Of Eveline James Joyce s Eveline is a short story about a nineteen year old Eveline, who contemplates abandoning a life she is accustomed to and moving to a distant land with a man she hardly knows. In one hand she holds the weight of uncertain happiness, in the other, inevitable misery. Eveline needs to make a choice between two contrasting lives; one in which she is a servant to her father, in other, a respected wife. Following her mother s death, Eveline assumes the role of a parent and inherits all the chores accompanying it. She works hard at home and the Stores (Joyce 74), but for all her troubles, Eveline gets little respect in return. Now with one brother dead and other away on business, she is left alone to keep the family together and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Being at the bottom of the hierarchy, Eveline s only means of escape is a man who will take her hand in marriage. Eveline s father is the second most important character in the story, yet Joyce chooses not to reveal his name. That is because he is only a father in a biological sense, falling short at every other fatherly duty. Mr.Hill is a failed provider who takes his offspring s earnings only to hand it back, allowing him to feel like a man of the house . He is abusive and flaunts his dominance by threaten[ing] (Joyce 73) Eveline well into her adulthood. The threats seem unprovoked and random, indicating father s attempts to instill fear rather than curb or abolish an offending behavior. Compensating for his failures, the father uses aggression and control to get what he wants. Her father was becoming old lately, she noticed; he would miss her (Joyce 75), the narrator draws our attention to the aging of the father and impending helplessness following it. Though Joyce does not clarify how the father will miss Eveline, judging by his past conducts, it is safe to assume that he would miss Eveline s help around the house and money the most. Still, as she contemplates leaving, Eveline sees good in him and tries to balance her father s increasing capacity for violence by remembering three random acts of kindness (Trudell) that seemingly undue all the wrong he has done in the past.
