Geoffrey Chaucers Use of Sarcasm to Describe His Characters
Geoffrey Chaucers use of sarcasm to describe his characters.
Geoffrey Chaucer used sarcasm to describe his characters in The Canterbury Tales. It will point out
details that are seen in the book that help explain how he used this sarcasm to prove a point and to
teach life lessons sometimes. I will also point out how this sarcasm was aimed at telling the reader his
point of view about how corrupt the Catholic Church was. Chaucer uses an abundance of sarcasm, as
opposed to seriousness, to describe his characters in The Canterbury Tales. Chaucer did not begin
working on The Canterbury Tales until he was in his early 40s. Chaucer took his narrative inspiration
for his works from several sources but still remained an entirely ... Show more content on

The sarcasm continues throughout the whole tale and is aimed at the corruption in the preacher.
Chaucer wrote for and may have read his works aloud to a select audience of fellow courtiers and
officials, which doubtless sometimes included members of the royal family. (Adams 2) So, as you see,
he really didn t care who heard his opinions on the Church, even the royal family, and he was going to
tell everybody exactly what he thought. Chaucer uses some sarcasm in The Man of Laws tale. Once
upon a time a group of wise, sober, and honest traders lived in Syria. They exported spices, gold,
satins, etc far and wide. It so happened that the leading traders of this prosperous group made up their
minds to go to Rome for business purposes. (141) It came to pass, the masters of this sort decided to
go to Rome for business or rather for sport. On their visit they stayed at the nearest inn. During their
stay in Rome the Syrian traders came to know about the incredible beauty of Constance, the daughter
of Roman Emperor Tiberius Constantinus. (141) The Sultan was captivated by Lady Constance s
description and resolved to make her his wife. The Roman emperor made magnificent preparations for
his daughter s wedding. But the councilors foresaw that no Christian ruler would be willing to let his
heir marry a Muslim. The Sultan was so much in love with Constance that he dismissed this religious

The Life Of Tutankhamun
Tutankhamun (born as Tutankhaten) captured global interest in ancient Egypt when British
archaeologist Howard Carter discovered his tomb in the Valley Of Kings in 1922 Despite his fame,
Tutankhamun lived an unremarkable life due to his very young age and early death.
Tutankhamun was born to Akhenaton during his reign otherwise known as the Amarna Revolution. In
his time as pharaoh Akhenaton instated Aton as the chief male god of Egypt and moved the religious
and administrative capitals to his newly built capital of Amarna. Akhenaton s poor leadership which
included strict monotheism and neglect of foreign power and affairs with the Hittites in Syria created
considerable unrest in Egypt. Tutankhamun succeeded Akhenaton around age eight and

Managing Pain During The Acute Care Setting
Everyone experiences pain differently, its etiology, source, and type of pain is unique to each patient.
Pain is defined as a complex, multidimensional phenomenon that originates from sensory stimuli,
which has obvious motivation affective properties, demands attention, disrupts thought and behavior
and results in activity aimed to stop the pain (Blanchard, 2010). Managing pain in the acute care
setting has become one of the greatest challenges nurses and healthcare providers face.
Unsatisfactorily managed pain can contribute to several adverse outcomes for hospitalized patients
including reduced mobility, stimulation of unhealthy stress response, infection, creates barriers, and
additional complications. As pain treatment becomes more aggressive, so too does our attention to
reassessment of pain after intervention to ensure both safe and effective pain management (Gordon,
2014).
In 1992, the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research provided guidelines for the management of
acute postoperative pain. The goals of the pain management guidelines are to reduce pain,
complications, and length of hospital stay, to educate patients in communicating unrelieved pain; and
to enhance patient satisfaction with pain management practices (Good, 1998). From these guidelines,
Marion Good, PhD, RN, helped develop a middle range theory for Acute Pain Management for adults
who can learn, set goals, and communicate symptoms. The theory does not pertain to individuals such
as elderly,

Iceland Is A Country Of Iceland
Iceland is a country that is misleading in many ways and is often underestimated. The name Iceland,
itself is often debated and joked about, however the origin of the name Iceland is credited to a story by
a Scandinavian sailor in the Book of Settlements (Shanin). Many often joke that the country of Iceland
is greener than one may be led to believe in more ways than one. The island was first inhabited by
Nordic people around 870 AD in what is now modern day Reykjavik (Valgardsson). The city of
Reykjavik is the heart of Iceland in more ways than one. The city is home to approximately 120,000
people this contributes to the 60% of the Icelandic population who live in the Reykjavik city area
(Scrivener). In addition to housing the largest population in the country, the city is also the home of
the Icelandic government, the country s biggest industries, and Icelandic culture (Valgardsson). This is
what makes Reykjavik so unique as the city itself is an embodiment of the country of Iceland as a
whole. And while it is the fastest growing urban area among Nordic countries, what sets it apart from
other homogeneous nordic cities is its approach to the environmental sustainability and its goal to be
carbon neutral by 2020. Reykjavik is consider one of the greenest cities in the world. What makes it so
significantly sustainable is how it harnesses energy. Almost all the energy Reykjavik uses is derived
from hydroelectric power and geothermal energy (Gipe). The use of geothermal and

Aggregate Demand In America
Weak aggregate demand and rising costs due to still high energy and food prices put the US economy
in a tricky situation, one in which the Federal Reserve is forced to make the tough decision between
tackling the unemployment problem (jobless rates have risen to 5.7%) or the inflation problem (price
levels have also risen 5.7% this year, the highest inflation in 17 years). Rising prices and rising
joblessness are both harmful to the economy, but when energy and food prices drive up the price level,
while week investment and consumer spending lead to falling overall demand in the economy, the
conditions exist where joblessness and prices can rise simultaneously. This is America s situation at
present. In the short run, however, the decline

Comparing Polonius, Laetres, And Ophelia
The next set of characters worth dissecting are Polonius, Laetres, and Ophelia each of whom has their
own distinct attributes. Polonius who is the father of Laetres and Ophelia is also a councilor to King
Claudius. Polonius is the first to be killed and dies unexpectedly while listening to Hamlet and Queen
Gertrude from behind a tapestry. Hamlet suspects Polonius to be King Claudius and stabs him through
the tapestry. Though Polonius was killed by mistake there is reasonable evidence that he in fact
wanted Hamlet gone. First, Polonius was not comfortable with the relationship Hamlet had with his
daughter, and for her health advised that she did not see him anymore. Ophelia tells Polonius how
Hamlet confronted her with his clothes unfastened

Elizabeth Cady Argument Analysis
If Elizabeth Cady Stanton was alive today, she would be definitely pleased to see the advancements of
women s rights, however, she would not be completely satisfied and probably disappointed to see that
many of the issues she brought up during her time are still being dealt with today. Elizabeth Cady
Stanton was highly critical of the sexual double standard and the lack of equal education for women.
She believed that men should be placed at the same moral standard as women and that women should
be given the same opportunity in education as men. Remarkably, women today have advanced far
more in education than with the sexual double standard, however, the sexual double standard has
come to collide with women s education. Stanton saw that men ... Show more content on

In the Declaration of Sentiments, Stanton writes, That the same amount of virtue, delicacy, and
refinement of behavior that is required of women in the social state, should also be required of man...
(DuBois and Dunmeil A 3). Note how Stanton does not state that women should be allowed to be
sexually free like men, instead she states that women should keep their high standards, but men should
be raised to that standard as well (DuBois 30). Therefore, men should be punished in the same way as
women are to be punished. In addition to leveling the plane on morality, Stanton demands that women
should have the right to be trailed by a jury of our own peers (DuBois 46). By allowing women to be
part of the jury in criminal cases, specifically the cases involving women and sex, more men would be
held responsible for their actions. In the case of Abson, the jury who found her guilty and let the black
man go free was most likely a jury filled with men. Stanton would argue that she was unfairly tried
because according to her, men fails to do justice to women in her best estate, and that she was not
represented in the jury. In her 1854 address to the Legislature of NewYotk, Stanton points out how no
rank of men have ever been satisfied with being tried by jurors higher or lower in the civil or political
scale than themselves, that slaveholders cannot make laws and execute laws for slaves, nor can
nobleman do the same for peasants, therefore she states that neither can man make and execute just
laws for women (DuBois 46). Consequently, if the moral standard were to be raised for men, then
women will have to be represented in the jury for criminal cases so men will be held

Summer Of The Seventeenth Doll Dramatic Techniques
Summer of the Seventeenth Doll, by Ray Lawler was a bottling performance. A highly effective use of
lighting, set design, props and additional sensory stimulus; were powerful tools in creating a realistic
production. The skilful use of the elements of drama; human context; language, movement, mood and
dramatic tension, enabled the audience to relate to the characters and plot. The development of sub
plots also added to the creation of a realistic performance, by mirroring the human condition. Through
the effective use of these dramatic techniques; Neil Armfield was successful in creating a realistic
portrayal of Ray Lawler s Summer of the Seventeenth Doll.

Olive and Pearl had a somewhat odd friendship at the beginning of the play, Olive tried desperately to
make her standard of life seem fit to the much more classy Pearl. However as their situations unfold, it
is made clear that much of this class in Pearl is surface level only. We learn her husband has left her
and she has a problem daughter. After learning this Olive seems to warm much more easily to Pearl,
possibly reflecting Olive s insecurity around people of a higher class.
Neil Armfield was highly successful in implementing the elements of drama, especially those of
movement, mood, language and tension. All characters within Summer of the Seventeenth Doll
created realistic mood to portray their respective characters. As the summer progressed, the mood
changed dramatically, from the bubbly highs of the first meeting, demonstrated mainly by Olive s
nervous excitement in the moments before the arrival of Roo and Barney; to the depressive goodbye
demonstrated again by Olive when she clears the entire house. When juxtaposed to the mood of the
previous sixteen summers, the audience was able to see from the beginning that this summer was
going to be different; through strong use of mood it was clear that this would be the last of the
summers. While movement was in the most part realistic, the actors did lapse in this area occasionally;
this was most evident in the fight scene between Roo and Barney. However the most

Ethical Theories Of Ethical Decision Making
This paper is about ethical decision making that involved a case study in a movie based on a true
story. It is about a child named Lorenzo Odone, his disease, adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD) and how
both his parents relentlessly pursued to find treatment for him. Aside from Mr. and Mrs. Odones
decision making, the doctors and scientists involved in Lorenzo s treatment were just as affected.
These characters were faced with ethical issues that arose when deciding proper course in finding
treatment for Lorenzo s ALD. This paper will discuss the four ethical theories of decision making seen
in the movie and the effects it had not only on Lorenzo but everyone that was involved. Ethical

This theory is opposite of teleological. The decision making for this approach is dependent on the act
itself than the consequence of it. Edge Grove (2006) provided a great case study in their book as an
example of deontological. In the case study, they stated two good friends were working together and
one accidentally breaks an equipment. He asks for his friend to not mention it to anyone but when the
manager questions the incident the next day, the deontological decision would be to tell the truth since
lying about the incident is not a proper duty of an employee (p.

Thanksgiving Reflection Paper
In order to understand tradition one has to fully immerse themselves into a situation where tradition is
taking place. Thanksgiving is the perfect opportunity to explore what it means to celebrate, the holiday
is an American holiday only and is celebrated in a multitude of different ways with an endless amount
of traditional flare that changes from family to family. I have many biases as to what the Thanksgiving
holiday looks like. Political rants, family members fighting over things from the past, children running
around creating chaos. I chose my family to observe because I wanted to gain somewhat of an outsider
perspective on what it was like to be around my family at the holidays. Obviously I have been going
to Thanksgiving with these same people my whole life but I wanted to be able to look at the gathering
in a different way and understand in a more significant way why the way my family celebrates may be
different from how I ve seen other people s families celebrate.
As I step toward the house that I have known my entire life I find myself inspecting every inch of the
outer areas. The pile of crunchy, dull colored leaves that had been pushed to a corner as if not to
interfere with the delicately arranged garden that surrounded the lands perimeter just along the
sidewalk. The flowers in the surrounding garden have all died and are merely brown branches
standing tall and spiked awaiting the spring season. The entryway walls are consumed with long
weaving branches all

Charlemagne s Influence On Charlemagne
The life of Charlemagne is one of historical and utter greatness. He ruled in a time of turmoil and
disorder during middle ages in Europe. The successes of his past lineage prepared and propelled him
to take on the tremendous task of expanding, governing and reforming the Frankish Empire.
Charlemagne incredible accomplishment during his sovereignty. For he not only invented an efficient
way to govern his people call feudalism, he also created a way to keep the loyalty to his empire
through inspectors. He led countless conquests against the various adversaries that once opposed the
Holy Roman Empire, which expanded his empire across the greater half of Europe. With his grand
conquests a solidification between the Catholic Church and the State began to take hold. Charlemagne
being a keen individual saw great opportunity within the partnership with the Church especially ones
of the monasteries. Using them to usher in the Carolingian renaissance. The crowning of Charlemagne
as Holy Roman Emperor fashioned a turning point that would forever change the path of Europe.
Within years after his death, though, Charlemagne once boundless empire wasted away. Charlemagne
s reign indeed greatly influenced the course of Europe in ways he had only hoped it would. But as
history often shows for every one event there are often several incantations and interpretations.
Charlemagne reign is definitely not an exception to the rule, his tale is presented in two biographies;

The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas Rhetorical Analysis
In The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas, the author Le Guin establishes the idea that one can not
enjoy happiness that results from the immoral, discriminatory victimization of someone else. Upon
first look, the city of Omelas seems like a fairy tale utopia where everyone is happy, yet underneath
this veil of splendor, there is a child that is neglected and abused to the point of where some people are
so sickened that they must leave Omelas. All of Omelas s glamour and joy depends solely on the
suffering of this child, and if the child were to be rescued, all goodness in Omelas would be destroyed.
The people of Omelas know that theirs is no vapid irresponsible happiness. They know that they, like
the child, are not free (47). The passage reveals that the people fully understand the terms of the child
s misery. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Therefore, their happiness is not even true happiness because it is constantly shadowed by the
knowledge of the child s suffering, and yet paradoxically, they feel morally obligated to be happy for
the sake of the child. In a sense, they are so bound to the child that they do not have any more freedom
than the child itself. In contrast, there are also people who are so disturbed by this dark secret of the
child that they leave Omelas...toward [a] place...that [possibly] does not exist. But they seem to know
where they are going (47). To leave Omelas for the unknown would need considerable courage, but
they know that they will never be truly happy staying in Omelas. Just like how the people of Omelas
know that the joy built upon successful slaughter is not the right kind of joy, those who leave
understand that happiness at the expense of a scapegoat, such as the child, is also not the right kind of
joy

Ku Klux Klan Impact
The Ku Klux Klan not only played a part in the history of civil rights but also made quite an impact on
our society. Some negative impacts that have occurred included inflicted violence and large numbers
of deaths within the African American community. Many families and friends suffered and mourned
for their loved ones who died unrighteous and sorrowful deaths. Despite the darkness of the impacts,
there was still a ray of light. For example, when the KKK emphasized and kept racial
segregation/discrimination for a long time, it actually became a wake up call for more passionate and
confident civil right activists. This caused the opposing force s desire to stop racial segregation
become stronger and more motivated. As time went by, many more

Advertising Guitars with Suicide and Sex
Ads are made to grab a certain audience and make that audience relate to the specific ad or make them
want to go out and purchase the product that is being promoted. Many ads are trying to sell specific
items; but if a person really analyses the ad, the company is selling or promoting more than one item.
In this ad the company Gibson is promoting a specific guitar to be sold. In the ad there is a six string,
electric guitar standing up with the wording, If this doesn t get you laid you should just commit
suicide. In the lower right hand corner of the ad, the company s name Gibson is printed. This six string
guitar is popular for beginning music artists. In this ad the company Gibson is using pathos, ethos, and
logos to get the audience s attention. The Gibson guitar ad explicitly sells guitars, but it implicitly sells
sex and suicide.
Gibson guitars are directing this ad to older teenage and young male adults. The audience is young
enough that they are still debating on what career path that they want to go down. To some of this
audience, this ad would grab their attention by thinking this guitar should get them laid. This aspect
would be directed mainly towards young males. Also, some guitars give the sexy and spontaneous
impression, which in a young male s eyes, is a perfect career. The ad is also saying that if a person
doesn t get laid because of a guitar, they should just kill themselves. By analyzing the statement and
ad picture, music involves sex and

Carl Rogers’ Theory Of Personality. Personality Theories
Carl Rogers Theory of Personality
Personality theories suggest explanations for behaviors and how to change them. Multiple personality
theories exist however one of the most interesting is the theory of personality by Carl Rogers. Rogers
writes, the core of man s nature is essentially positive (1961, p.73). Carl Ransom Rogers (January
8,1902 February 4, 1987) was an influential American psychologist who, along with Abraham Maslow
founded the humanistic approach to psychology ( Carl, 2017, para. 1). Carl Rogers was an

McLeod (2014) explains that self concept has three parts which are self esteem, self image, and ideal
self. He says Rogers believed self esteem developed from how our parents interacted with us
(McLeod, 2014). Simply, self image is how we see ourselves (McLeod, 2014). McLeod (2014)
mentions that Self image influences how a person thinks, feels and behaves in the world. According to
McLeod (2014), our ideal self is who we desire to be. Basically, the closer a persons self image and
ideal self are to each other the higher one s self esteem becomes. Rogers developed Person centered
therapy. Rogers basic tenet was that if unconditional positive regard (Respect), genuineness and
honesty (Congruence), and empathic understanding (Empathy) were present in a relationship, growth
and psychological healing would occur ( Carl, 2017). McLeod(2014) suggest that incongruence exist
when a person s self concept does not match reality. For example, a student who makes good grades
on test might think they are a great student, when in reality they never come to class and lie to the
teacher with excuses. According to McLeod(2014) Conditional positive regard is when the person is
loved depending on correct and acceptable behaviors (McLeod, 2014). Lastly, unconditional positive
regard is where the person is loved and supported no matter what the person does (McLeod, 2014).

Characters of Ragtime Each one of the characters in this book have a completely different personality

interesting is that the characters are a mix of actual historical figures, and imagined characters made

but Doctorow pulled it off and created a fantastic book. Baron Ashkenazy otherwise known as Tateh a

The Pros And Cons Of Baseball
According to the article, Quotations About Baseball (2017), Bill Veeck stated, That s the true
harbinger of spring, not crocuses or swallows returning to Capistrano, but the sound of a bat on a ball.
See what s crazy is this quote can apply to so much. As everyone loves when springtime rolls around,
avid sport lovers are eager for spring athletics. Known as America s pastime, baseball has been loved
amongst the country since its creation in 1836. According to the chart, Top 10 List of the World s Most
Popular Sports (2017), lists baseball as number seven and boasts a whopping five hundred million
fans . Being an average American, I notice how Americans close their mind to their beloved spring
athletics. Past the ocean borders beholds land with totally different cultures. Where America has
baseball, Asia, Australia, and the United Kingdom all turn their eyes toward a sport that originated in
1877, cricket. Top 10 List of the World s Most Popular Sports (2017) lists cricket as the second most
popular sport in the world entrancing over 2.5 billion fans . While baseball is so popular in the United
States, cricket rules the eastern hemisphere with five times the number of fans. The two sports are
similar and different on multiple aspects, an argument definitely arises when discussing the difficulty
between the two. Each sport has their own attributes to declare better or more challenging than the
other. I believe it s all a matter of opinion, facts, and experience, but

The last quality of a scout is usually the hardest to come by as one might guess because of being on
the road for so long. It is tough to keep a family in this job because of time commitments, and the
starting pay can be quite low. Scouts usually report to the director of scouting, and then the director
reports to upper management such as the general manager, assistant general manager, vice president of
global scouting, and director of strategy. It is also possible that scouts and the director will also be
heavily involved with coaches within the organization. The information gathered will help teams in
many ways. It allows them to draft the best possible player and to get the best free agents for the right
price, but it helps them prepare for games against opposing teams. These three parts are vital when it
comes to winning in the present but also in future years. Matt said that the most exciting part about his

Magnesium Ribbon Essay
Title
Aim The aim is to investigate the effect of concentration on the temperature result from the
magnesium ribbon reaction in hydrochloric acid.
Background Information The rate of reaction is a term that relates to the speed at which the reaction
occurs. This is the speed that the magnesium ribbon will take to dissolve in each test tube. The time
that the magnesium ribbon takes to dissolve will probably be different as there are different amounts
of hydrochloric acid in each tube. Exothermic is the term that refers to the temperature that develops
from the magnesium ribbon dissolving in the hydrochloric acid. The temperature varies depending on
the rate of reaction and the concentration of hydrochloric acid in the test tube. The ... Show more

Response paper to Blood Wedding
The Blood Wedding written by Federico Garcia Lorca is a tragic love story focusing on women and
two men who love her. It was first performed in Madrid in march 1933.The play has many references
to social, cultural and historical events and themes. Blood Wedding opened on Thursday November 9,
2017 at Aaron Davis Hall.
In Blood Wedding the wealthy bridegroom lives alone with his mother. The mother lost her husband
and her older son. She hates seeing knife anywhere near around her for she believes the knives are
responsible for the murder of her husband and son. The mother is overprotective of her son because of

looks at the bride and then she spits at her and the light goes off and the act I starts. I think this is very
interesting because this gives us the foreshadow of what s about to happen in the play. Her action
which was spitting on the bride showed very strong hate and disgrace towards the bride which I think
is very stronger than just slapping her. In this play, the style of the stage that was the black box stage. I
think this style of the stage was very helpful as it didn t block the view of the actors as the thrust stage
did which was used in the crucible. I was able to see the actors clearly without their back facing
towards me. The role of a wife was played by Drew Beaubian. What I really liked about her character
is that she is very innocent and unaware of her husband love for another woman who turns out be her
cousin. She worries about her family. I was expecting there to be a lot of crying once the mother and
wife finds out about the death the bridegroom and Leonard but to my surprise neither of them cried in
the play which was pretty odd to me knowing the son was very dear to the mother. Ana Rivera played

Essay on Artillery and Weapons of the Civil War
Every war, though happens for a reason and bring a better change, is often gruesome. The Civil War
broke America in two groups and, at the time, was the war with the most casualties and injured men.
As the fight to preserve the Union progressed, so did a number of other areas, such as weaponry and
artillery. The advanced technology produced through the Civil War assisted in increasing number of
casualties. The North was more fortuitous than the South in multitudinous ways. One of which
includes the fact that their industrial society allowed them to produce a larger amount of weapons of a
higher quality. One of the major reasons the Union triumphantly defeated the Confederate army was
because of their more superior types of weapons. A ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Unfortunately, the South had a large disadvantage in this area. The Confederacy was dependent on
stolen weapons to fight in the war (Morgan). Although the South advanced in agriculture, this did not
assist them in producing a high quality and quantity of weaponry and artillery.
Artillery caused a greater commotion than weaponry amongst people. It was better at targeting and
accurately shooting targets. The Parrott rifle, as previously mentioned, was used frequently yet was
unpopular amongst the soldiers. As a solution, the 3 inch Ordnance replaced the Parrott rifle. This
cannon was more accurate and had a longer range, up to about 2,300 yards. It was a hundred pounds
lighter than the Parrott. The Union army produced about a thousand Ordnances. Lacking the
technology, the Confederates did not and could not produce them. However, the Ordnance was
unnecessary during most battles since the shooter had to see his target in order to shoot with any
accuracy (Morgan). The Ordnance, though not necessary, was a commonly used weapon. In order to
solve the flaws of the Ordnance, the Napoleon was created. It is believed that the Napoleon was the
cause of more artillery casualties than all the other models combined during the Civil War. It could fire
as far as 1700 yards, but was deadly accurate within a range of 300 yards. The Napoleon was a
favorite amongst some Northern artillerists because of

The Revenant Themes
The genre I chose to review for the month of October was an American Movie, The Revenant.
Directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu this film is set in 1823 in Montana and South Dakota and the
main character is Hugh Glass played by Leonardo DiCaprio. Hugh Glass is a frontiersman who is half
Native American and has a Native American son named Hawk. The movie revolves around his
struggles as a father and his comeback after being attacked by a bear and almost dying, losing his son,
and being left behind by his own men. In the end a Native American chief kills the man who killed
Glass s son. The last scene show Glass falling to his knees and seeing a vision of his dead wife
walking into the light and then Glass s eyes fill up with tears. I decided to review ... Show more

The movie also has merit because of the emotion that is displayed by the main characters during their
long and difficult journey throughout the movie. Overall, The Revenant was an emotional and
suspenseful journey through Hugh Glass s struggles as an American Frontiersman.
The connection to American culture is strong in this movie because of its setting and the characters
involved. The setting is in South Dakota and Montana. The time period is the winter of 1823, a
popular time for the American Frontier. Many of the scenes in the movie show extreme cold and lots
of snow. For example, when Hugh Glass is wounded and running from an Indian Tribe on a horse, he
jumps off a cliff with the horse. He then precedes to open the horse and gut it. Then he goes inside of
the horse and falls asleep. This horse s bodies saved him from the hearse cold that ended up freezing
the whole outside of the horse. To film this obscene cold, the movie was actually filmed in Calgary
and Alberta, Canada because their is more frontier like land up north in less developed and less
traveled land. Watching the movie, there was no distinctive difference between current

The Day At Marine Corps
A million thoughts were running through my head as we drove from Savannah, Georgia International
Airport in the dead of night. I along with 50 other new recruits were herded on to a bus and told to put
our heads down as they drove around for what seemed like hours. The recruiters used this as a
disorienting and scare tactic, so we would have no idea where we were. As we arrived at Marine
Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, I thought to myself, holy shit, am I really doing this? As the bus
pulled to a stop a drill instructor stepped on to the bus. He began shouting unintelligible words at us in
a raspy, gruff voice. The only words I was able to understand were off and bus . I didn t give it a

How Of A Lab Report
How to Write a Lab Report
The purpose of a lab report is to describe your lab experiment in such detail (including what was used,
when it took place, who was present, how the lab went, what happened, what results were found, and
the overall discussions and conclusions) that your described experiment or lab could be replicated by
someone of similar education and training who was not present. A lab report should be written as a
description of what you did, not instructions for doing the lab. Another goal (especially at this level) is
to thoroughly explain what you did and what you learned.
When writing a lab report, do not use personal pronouns such as we or I , and so on. For example,
write, The egg was placed in a container rather than I placed the egg in a container . The report should
be written in past tense. Your paragraphs should be one and a half spaced. Choose a professional font
and use a font size of 10, 11, or 12. ALL WRITING MUST BE YOUR OWN WORDS even if you
were working with other people!
A lab report contains the following components:
Title
The title should be concise (try for less than ten words) and should reflect the factual content or
purpose of the lab / paper. A good title is straightforward and uses keywords that researchers in a
particular field will recognize (such as pH Lab , or Virtual pH Lab ).
Introduction
The introduction of a lab report states the purpose of your experiment. Your hypothesis should be
included in the introduction, as well

Cuban Embargo Analysis
We will end an outdated approach that... has failed to advance our interests, and instead we will begin
to normalize relations between our two countries. Through these changes, we intend to create more
opportunities for the American and Cuban people, and begin a new chapter among the nations of the
Americas (President Obama, Official Released Statement). On December 17th, 2014 the American
embargo on Cuba, which set restrictions on relations with Cuba, was relaxed after over fifty years.
The embargo on Cuba set restrictions on relations in areas such as travel and trade. The initial

The lifting of bans could provide greater interactions between families of Cuban Americans
(Clement). The embargo caused many to be unable to visit family members in Cuba. The removal of
the embargo would not only increase the amount of foreign travelers to Cuba, but would also result in
revenue from citizens visiting family, an example of another opportunity travel to Cuba would
provide. There are numerous economic, social, and cultural benefits that will flow from free and open
access [to Cuba]... (Mangla). Cuba would become a frequent travel spot for tourists from the United
States because of Cuba s close proximity. The expansion of American tourism would benefit airlines,
local shops, universities, and restaurants. Authors Jorge Dominquez, professor of International Affairs
at Harvard, and Barberia Lorena, professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of
Sao Paulo, recalled the increase of students studying abroad to Cuba. The professors also found that in
2004 Cuba was one of the top fifteen places of international study. With Cuba s strong position in
foreign studies, tourism has the ability to open new education opportunities to students as well as
increase the income from travel. As educational opportunities become available, this would result in
even more revenue due to the cost of universities and tuition. Students who receive an education in
Cuba and return home could have a more positive view of Cuba which could also boost Cuba s
position in foreign countries. This growth in tourism to Cuba would lead to an increase of income as
well as opening many other possibilities to the Cuban economy with outside

Essay about Language in Amiri Baraka s The Dutchman
Language in Amiri Baraka s The Dutchman
The popular saying actions speak louder than words is upended in Amiri Baraka s play, The
Dutchman, where words, or in this case language, speaks louder than the actions of the characters,
Lula and Clay. Language governs the characters and their actions, and is therefore a prominent feature
in shaping the identities of Lula and Clay. In the play, Baraka conveys the significance of Lula and
Clay being enabled to change their identities by a simple change in the type of language they employ.
Though it may seem that the characters have dominion over the language and can shape their own
identities by a simple change in the language they utilize, through repetition of the concurring motifs

She uses lies to make Clay feel that she knows him and has control over his life. Therefore the lies
become a form of control that Lula has over Clay, and white people have over black people. What
Lula fails to comprehend is that by lying she doesn t control the world and her identity in society, but
the world starts to control her and her identity in the social structure. Clay, like Lula, is also caught in
this trap of lies because of the fact that he is black. Clay argues that [people] don t know anything
except what s there for [them] to see. An act. Lies. Device. Not the pure heart, the pumping black
heart (34). He is living a lie; his whole identity as a black person as perceived by outsiders is a lie.
Even though he chooses this fake façade of a white man instead of murdering white people, the
language of lies once again shapes his identity as a fake white man. Lula also tells Clay that by telling
her he loves her is the only kind of thing [he] will lie about. Especially if [he] think[s] it ll keep [her]
alive (27). What Lula implies here is that if Clay doesn t lie about loving her, then because he doesn t
employ the language of lies, he will act upon the truth and murder her. Though Clay denies this
accusation, the fact that Lula believes that Clay would lie, shapes his identity as a liar. Both Lula and
Clay try to form their identity apart from what society has imposed on them by lying. Both fail on this

It Is Too Little Air Traffic Control
1. The fact that some airplanes collide is evidence that there is too little air traffic control. Evaluate.
This is a false statement because airplane collision can be eliminated through the provision of better
safety control measures. This is a measure of opportunity cost by the Airplane Company whereby
safety is traded off by other factors to reduce cost of air traffic control and substitute it with other
company cost such as charges incurred during air flights. Opportunity cost is the value of the forgone

The data for this study on school mobility and math achievement came from the Chicago School
Readiness Program (1728). Random kids were put into Head Start programs that had teacher trainings

poverty compared to other big cities. Throughout the study, there were various sources that were used

Nacirema Culture Analysis
For us to properly learn about culture, we must understand the meaning of cultural relativism and
ethnocentrism. The two concepts challenge one another. Reading the article, we must pull away from
our ethnocentric views and think critically about the Nacirema people s. However, the description of
the culture creates an ideology that is hard to agree with. For example, the Nacirema peoples take part
in a rite that involves hog hairs and magical powders. The Nacirema rituals do sound strange and
displeasing but, we have to learn to recognize our ethnocentric judgments.
An anthropologist will try to read and understand the Nacirema culture with the notion of being
culturally relative. With this way of thinking in mind, we could study the Nacirema peoples without
any judgment. If we can come to terms with our ethnocentric views, we can quickly analyze the wrong
way of thinking. Therefore, we can try to understand the Nacirema culture through their shoes. If we
keep looking at their cultural in a primarily ethnocentric perspective, we would not have found the

Born on December 26th, 1785 in the small village of La Balmes les Grottes, France, (a village on the
northeastern edge of Lyon) Laurent Clerc was born the only child to the Clerc family. The name of his
parents were Joseph Francois Clerc and Marie Elizabeth Candy. Joseph was the Royal Civil Attorney
and Justice of the Peace and his mother, Marie, was the magistrate of another town. His father was
also mayor of their village from 1780 1814. Although, soon they d come to realize their young boy
wasn t your average infant. It is unclear whether Laurent was born deaf or if it was caused from an
accident he had as a child. This newfound family had now begun with some altercations, but none

He was so dedicated that he was even assigned to the highest class. Later, he sailed off with Thomas
Gallaudet (a former student of his) to finalize a school for the Deaf in America. They finally
accomplished this when they created the School for the Deaf in Hartford, Connecticut. His incredible
ability to teach and relate to the students did not go unnoticed. Even today he is still known as a
renowned master teacher. His love for teaching made him stay in America longer than he desired. He
never did return to his family in France. Sadly, after a full life, Louis Laurent Marie Clerc, passed
away on July 18th, 1869 at the age of 83 years old. His wife and him were buried at the Spring Grove
Cemetery in Hartford, Connecticut. Him and his wife s gravestones were actually vandalized and
damaged, but a man named, Alan Barwiolek along with the Laurent Clerc Cultural Fund, made sure
their headstones were returned to their former glory and respect. I think it s safe to say that teaching
was his life force, he died 10 years after

Karen Horney Archer Personality Traits
Sterling Malory Archer is the main character in FX s cartoon series Archer. Archer s personality is
mainly shaped around his childhood. He is a smooth, insensitive, borderline narcissistic, spy that
works for his mother. Archer was a lonely a child and didn t get a lot of attention from his mom, and
he didn t know who his father was till later on in the show. Karen Horney s view on personality shows
best for an assessment for Archer. I will be assessing Archer s personality using a psychodynamic
theory. Archer was raised mostly by his caretaker, Woodhouse, until he was old enough for him to be
able to attend Boarding School (15 years). His mother also favorited her Afghan hound, Duchess,
which later on Archer Adopts as a nickname/call sign ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As I said before Archer did not have a loving childhood, so Archer felt as if he was nothing. Karen
Horney believed that childhood tensions are more social, and not sexual. She also believed that
personality was mostly based on culture. In the episode The Man from Jupiter, Burt Reynolds starts
dating Archer s mom and Boss, Malory. Archer just as when he was a kid, got jealous because his
mom shows again that she cares for someone other than him. Also Archer had a man crush on
Reynolds. Later in the episode Archer tries to break up their relationship while being chased by a
Cuban hit squad. Archer thinks that the world revolves around him, he is very egotistic. If assist with
anyone or anything else, it is for his own benefit. In the episode White Knights, Archer travels to
Russia to find out his who his true father is. Archer then gets kidnapped by the KGB because Nikoli

How Is The United States Dealing With The Exceeding Issues...
How is the United States dealing with the exceeding issues that it faces today? The U.S is in a major
economic debt, and most likely will never come out of it again. For example, take a look at Kansas.
Kansas is in a major crisis on adequate funding for education. Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback,
announced $44.5 million in education will be cut, to help patch a budget hole blamed on deep income
tax reductions he signed into law (Cooper). Over half of the schools in Kansas, are now starting to feel
the effect from the budget cuts on education funding. This is becoming a major problem with schools,
trying to figure out if they are going to be closed. For instance, one school that got a major setback,
are wondering how they will be able to finish ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For instance, the first year after cannabis was made legal in Colorado, the state had a major surplus in
revenues. Colorado reached over $50 million dollars in recreational cannabis sales in June... half of
that is from medical sales (Connell). Also, this gave Colorado an opportunity in rebuilding their state,
such as adding new schools. For example, Colorado schools have earned $13.6 million in just the first
five months of 2015, a sharp increase over 2014, when the tax generated a total of $13.3 million for
the whole year... (Connell). To sum this up, this is one way to raise revenues to fund state education,
and other shortages.
The Cannabis plant has been harvested around the world since ancient history. Dated 2300 B.C,
scientist have found that Cannabis had been used for curing diseases, and other illnesses. Most
commonly known, were the Native Americans that used this plant. Cannabis is one of the most natural
plants on our planet, usually found in tropical and humid parts of the world. Not to mention, the soil
and weather plays a major role in the development of cannabis. Furthermore, it has two main
chemicals called CBD(Cannabiniol), and THC (delta 9 tetrahydrocannabinol), which are mostly used
in the medical field. Marijuana has many benefits such as, the root and stalks, are used for different
types of lotion, paper, clothes, and fuel. Due to the lack of scientific evidence, that marijuana was
medically helpful, it became illegal in the United States in

Reader Response And Literary Criticism In The Film Slumdog...
In order to begin my presentation one much understand what literary criticism is. Literary criticism is
the description and/or evaluation of a text. The meaning of a text derives from thinking critically,
analysing different aspects of the text, essentially thinking in more than one perspective. In this
presentation I will be discussing the perspectives of reader response and sociological criticism, in the
film Slumdog Millionaire. Reader response criticism considers the role of the reader as essential to
interpret the meaning of the text. In Slumdog Millionaire, the reader s response is based on the themes
in the film. Such themes as economic injustice, corruption, romance and destiny. The experiences and
expectations of the reader ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I am able to relate through the perspectives and attitudes of the characters. Personally relating to Jamal
and his ignorance to the world, desiring to see the good in everyone, especially towards his brother,
Salim. The text has increased my interest in the subject matter in what the Government can do to
change the current position in India and how Australia can support said change. My personal relation
to the film has changed my perspective in my attitude towards certain aspects of Indian life. I am more
compassionate towards the situation in which most Indians in Mumbai live in as not all circumstances
are in their control, regarding to the social structure of Indian society. My response to the film through
reader response, forms a sense of vulnerability to my beliefs and morals. Disturbed by the themes in
the film generated awareness of my attitude and understanding of certain scenarios portrayed in the
film. Such as, in the scene the Bombay riot in which people are murdered cold blooded and police are
shown to not care dismissing young Jamal calling for help as his lifeless mother floats in the water
nearby. Sociological criticism explores the cultural, economic and political context of the scenes
within a text. Slumdog millionaire explores these themes in a confronting and realistic element. The
Bombay riot one of many examples. In terms of physical power the police and gangsters have an
upper hand, whereas, Jamal has power in the sense

The Human Cost Of An Illiterate Society By Jonathan Kozol
Statistically, based on reports from 2003, 99% of the total population ages 15 and over can read and
write (CIA Library). Thus, one can conclude illiteracy is not a crisis. However, The Human Cost of an
Illiterate Society by Jonathan Kozol, implies something different. Kozol emphasizes the hardship of
an illiterate, and briefly explains the importance of helping an illiterate without providing much of a
solution, while Kozol s essay was ineffective overall because of the lack of factual evidence and
flawed conclusions, his strategic use of tone, repetition and rhetorical questioning provided some
strength to his argument. By establishing a sympathetic tone, Kozol effectively appeals our emotions,
which provides slight strength to his argument. For example, Kozol explains his dream he experienced
where he was in the Soviet, Then I remember that my card was confiscated for some reason, many
years before. Around this point, I wake up in a panic (2). Kozol s tone illustrates how helpless the
illiterates are and wants to appeal to our emotion of sympathy as he draws comparison to the same
troubles and emotions he experienced in his dream as illiterates experience daily. That emotional
impact provided some strength to his argument because it allows us to imagine an experience, which
may be unfamiliar. Kozol insinuates that illiterates match logos printed on packages to distinguish the
differences amongst food. Kozol points out, The purchaser who cannot read and does not dare

Team Leader Research Paper
Team Leader Paper Summary Of the many different kinds of leadership, I think the one that rest
describes me would be, participative leadership . At least, thats what I try to be. I m not really a hard
type A personality or anything and really enjoy hearing what others have to think and say about whats
going on and how to best do something. In general, This type of leadership helps to bring more of a
team spirit, and boosts the morale among the workers; probably because it gives each person an equal
chance to voice his or her option about any decision made. This type of leadership is good for the peer
clinical setting that we are working in, as it promotes good working relationships and a healthy
learning environment. There was a total of five students at Dyersburg Regional today, for which I was
given the team leader role. After starting out like any other day, it turned out to be quite the busy day.

Each of the patients, including ones that were not in our primary care, were checked on and asked if
they needed anything throughout the day. The nursing staff, as always was helpful, and for the most
part very friendly and easy to work with. They let us do everything they could and I know everyone
learned at least a thing or two. Each one of the guys did a very good job showing respect to each of the
patients, even if the patient was handful to deal with. The only issue that came up Monday was with
the young man who became irate with some of the nurses and had to be handled by the house
supervisor. Thankfully nothing major got stirred up and happened. Overall, Saturday was a success
and out post conference was great as well. Honestly, I really like the post conference. I think its not
only a great way to finish and summarize everything up, but i feel like you always learn a few things
from listing to everyone else and hearing about what happened and how they dealt with different

  • 2. Geoffrey Chaucers Use of Sarcasm to Describe His Characters Geoffrey Chaucers use of sarcasm to describe his characters. Geoffrey Chaucer used sarcasm to describe his characters in The Canterbury Tales. It will point out details that are seen in the book that help explain how he used this sarcasm to prove a point and to teach life lessons sometimes. I will also point out how this sarcasm was aimed at telling the reader his point of view about how corrupt the Catholic Church was. Chaucer uses an abundance of sarcasm, as opposed to seriousness, to describe his characters in The Canterbury Tales. Chaucer did not begin working on The Canterbury Tales until he was in his early 40s. Chaucer took his narrative inspiration for his works from several sources but still remained an entirely ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The sarcasm continues throughout the whole tale and is aimed at the corruption in the preacher. Chaucer wrote for and may have read his works aloud to a select audience of fellow courtiers and officials, which doubtless sometimes included members of the royal family. (Adams 2) So, as you see, he really didn t care who heard his opinions on the Church, even the royal family, and he was going to tell everybody exactly what he thought. Chaucer uses some sarcasm in The Man of Laws tale. Once upon a time a group of wise, sober, and honest traders lived in Syria. They exported spices, gold, satins, etc far and wide. It so happened that the leading traders of this prosperous group made up their minds to go to Rome for business purposes. (141) It came to pass, the masters of this sort decided to go to Rome for business or rather for sport. On their visit they stayed at the nearest inn. During their stay in Rome the Syrian traders came to know about the incredible beauty of Constance, the daughter of Roman Emperor Tiberius Constantinus. (141) The Sultan was captivated by Lady Constance s description and resolved to make her his wife. The Roman emperor made magnificent preparations for his daughter s wedding. But the councilors foresaw that no Christian ruler would be willing to let his heir marry a Muslim. The Sultan was so much in love with Constance that he dismissed this religious ... The Life Of Tutankhamun Tutankhamun (born as Tutankhaten) captured global interest in ancient Egypt when British archaeologist Howard Carter discovered his tomb in the Valley Of Kings in 1922 Despite his fame, Tutankhamun lived an unremarkable life due to his very young age and early death. Tutankhamun was born to Akhenaton during his reign otherwise known as the Amarna Revolution. In his time as pharaoh Akhenaton instated Aton as the chief male god of Egypt and moved the religious and administrative capitals to his newly built capital of Amarna. Akhenaton s poor leadership which included strict monotheism and neglect of foreign power and affairs with the Hittites in Syria created considerable unrest in Egypt. • 4. Managing Pain During The Acute Care Setting Everyone experiences pain differently, its etiology, source, and type of pain is unique to each patient. Pain is defined as a complex, multidimensional phenomenon that originates from sensory stimuli, which has obvious motivation affective properties, demands attention, disrupts thought and behavior and results in activity aimed to stop the pain (Blanchard, 2010). Managing pain in the acute care setting has become one of the greatest challenges nurses and healthcare providers face. Unsatisfactorily managed pain can contribute to several adverse outcomes for hospitalized patients including reduced mobility, stimulation of unhealthy stress response, infection, creates barriers, and additional complications. As pain treatment becomes more aggressive, so too does our attention to reassessment of pain after intervention to ensure both safe and effective pain management (Gordon, 2014). In 1992, the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research provided guidelines for the management of acute postoperative pain. The goals of the pain management guidelines are to reduce pain, complications, and length of hospital stay, to educate patients in communicating unrelieved pain; and to enhance patient satisfaction with pain management practices (Good, 1998). From these guidelines, Marion Good, PhD, RN, helped develop a middle range theory for Acute Pain Management for adults who can learn, set goals, and communicate symptoms. The theory does not pertain to individuals such as elderly, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Iceland Is A Country Of Iceland Iceland is a country that is misleading in many ways and is often underestimated. The name Iceland, itself is often debated and joked about, however the origin of the name Iceland is credited to a story by a Scandinavian sailor in the Book of Settlements (Shanin). Many often joke that the country of Iceland is greener than one may be led to believe in more ways than one. The island was first inhabited by Nordic people around 870 AD in what is now modern day Reykjavik (Valgardsson). The city of Reykjavik is the heart of Iceland in more ways than one. The city is home to approximately 120,000 people this contributes to the 60% of the Icelandic population who live in the Reykjavik city area (Scrivener). In addition to housing the largest population in the country, the city is also the home of the Icelandic government, the country s biggest industries, and Icelandic culture (Valgardsson). This is what makes Reykjavik so unique as the city itself is an embodiment of the country of Iceland as a whole. And while it is the fastest growing urban area among Nordic countries, what sets it apart from other homogeneous nordic cities is its approach to the environmental sustainability and its goal to be carbon neutral by 2020. Reykjavik is consider one of the greenest cities in the world. What makes it so significantly sustainable is how it harnesses energy. Almost all the energy Reykjavik uses is derived from hydroelectric power and geothermal energy (Gipe). The use of geothermal and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Aggregate Demand In America Weak aggregate demand and rising costs due to still high energy and food prices put the US economy in a tricky situation, one in which the Federal Reserve is forced to make the tough decision between tackling the unemployment problem (jobless rates have risen to 5.7%) or the inflation problem (price levels have also risen 5.7% this year, the highest inflation in 17 years). Rising prices and rising joblessness are both harmful to the economy, but when energy and food prices drive up the price level, while week investment and consumer spending lead to falling overall demand in the economy, the conditions exist where joblessness and prices can rise simultaneously. This is America s situation at present. In the short run, however, the decline ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Polonius who is the father of Laetres and Ophelia is also a councilor to King Claudius. Polonius is the first to be killed and dies unexpectedly while listening to Hamlet and Queen Gertrude from behind a tapestry. Hamlet suspects Polonius to be King Claudius and stabs him through the tapestry. Though Polonius was killed by mistake there is reasonable evidence that he in fact wanted Hamlet gone. • 8. Elizabeth Cady Argument Analysis If Elizabeth Cady Stanton was alive today, she would be definitely pleased to see the advancements of women s rights, however, she would not be completely satisfied and probably disappointed to see that many of the issues she brought up during her time are still being dealt with today. Elizabeth Cady Stanton was highly critical of the sexual double standard and the lack of equal education for women. She believed that men should be placed at the same moral standard as women and that women should be given the same opportunity in education as men. Remarkably, women today have advanced far more in education than with the sexual double standard, however, the sexual double standard has come to collide with women s education. Stanton saw that men ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the Declaration of Sentiments, Stanton writes, That the same amount of virtue, delicacy, and refinement of behavior that is required of women in the social state, should also be required of man... (DuBois and Dunmeil A 3). Note how Stanton does not state that women should be allowed to be sexually free like men, instead she states that women should keep their high standards, but men should be raised to that standard as well (DuBois 30). Therefore, men should be punished in the same way as women are to be punished. In addition to leveling the plane on morality, Stanton demands that women should have the right to be trailed by a jury of our own peers (DuBois 46). By allowing women to be part of the jury in criminal cases, specifically the cases involving women and sex, more men would be held responsible for their actions. In the case of Abson, the jury who found her guilty and let the black man go free was most likely a jury filled with men. Stanton would argue that she was unfairly tried because according to her, men fails to do justice to women in her best estate, and that she was not represented in the jury. In her 1854 address to the Legislature of NewYotk, Stanton points out how no rank of men have ever been satisfied with being tried by jurors higher or lower in the civil or political scale than themselves, that slaveholders cannot make laws and execute laws for slaves, nor can nobleman do the same for peasants, therefore she states that neither can man make and execute just laws for women (DuBois 46). Consequently, if the moral standard were to be raised for men, then women will have to be represented in the jury for criminal cases so men will be held ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. Summer Of The Seventeenth Doll Dramatic Techniques Summer of the Seventeenth Doll, by Ray Lawler was a bottling performance. A highly effective use of lighting, set design, props and additional sensory stimulus; were powerful tools in creating a realistic production. The skilful use of the elements of drama; human context; language, movement, mood and dramatic tension, enabled the audience to relate to the characters and plot. The development of sub plots also added to the creation of a realistic performance, by mirroring the human condition. Olive and Pearl had a somewhat odd friendship at the beginning of the play, Olive tried desperately to make her standard of life seem fit to the much more classy Pearl. However as their situations unfold, it is made clear that much of this class in Pearl is surface level only. We learn her husband has left her and she has a problem daughter. After learning this Olive seems to warm much more easily to Pearl, possibly reflecting Olive s insecurity around people of a higher class. Neil Armfield was highly successful in implementing the elements of drama, especially those of movement, mood, language and tension. All characters within Summer of the Seventeenth Doll created realistic mood to portray their respective characters. As the summer progressed, the mood changed dramatically, from the bubbly highs of the first meeting, demonstrated mainly by Olive s nervous excitement in the moments before the arrival of Roo and Barney; to the depressive goodbye demonstrated again by Olive when she clears the entire house. When juxtaposed to the mood of the previous sixteen summers, the audience was able to see from the beginning that this summer was going to be different; through strong use of mood it was clear that this would be the last of the summers. While movement was in the most part realistic, the actors did lapse in this area occasionally; this was most evident in the fight scene between Roo and Barney. However the most ... • 11. Thanksgiving Reflection Paper In order to understand tradition one has to fully immerse themselves into a situation where tradition is taking place. Thanksgiving is the perfect opportunity to explore what it means to celebrate, the holiday is an American holiday only and is celebrated in a multitude of different ways with an endless amount of traditional flare that changes from family to family. I have many biases as to what the Thanksgiving holiday looks like. Political rants, family members fighting over things from the past, children running around creating chaos. I chose my family to observe because I wanted to gain somewhat of an outsider perspective on what it was like to be around my family at the holidays. Obviously I have been going to Thanksgiving with these same people my whole life but I wanted to be able to look at the gathering in a different way and understand in a more significant way why the way my family celebrates may be different from how I ve seen other people s families celebrate. As I step toward the house that I have known my entire life I find myself inspecting every inch of the outer areas. The pile of crunchy, dull colored leaves that had been pushed to a corner as if not to interfere with the delicately arranged garden that surrounded the lands perimeter just along the sidewalk. The flowers in the surrounding garden have all died and are merely brown branches standing tall and spiked awaiting the spring season. The successes of his past lineage prepared and propelled him to take on the tremendous task of expanding, governing and reforming the Frankish Empire. Charlemagne incredible accomplishment during his sovereignty. For he not only invented an efficient way to govern his people call feudalism, he also created a way to keep the loyalty to his empire through inspectors. He led countless conquests against the various adversaries that once opposed the Holy Roman Empire, which expanded his empire across the greater half of Europe. With his grand conquests a solidification between the Catholic Church and the State began to take hold. Charlemagne being a keen individual saw great opportunity within the partnership with the Church especially ones of the monasteries. Using them to usher in the Carolingian renaissance. The crowning of Charlemagne as Holy Roman Emperor fashioned a turning point that would forever change the path of Europe. Within years after his death, though, Charlemagne once boundless empire wasted away. Charlemagne s reign indeed greatly influenced the course of Europe in ways he had only hoped it would. • 13. The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas Rhetorical Analysis In The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas, the author Le Guin establishes the idea that one can not enjoy happiness that results from the immoral, discriminatory victimization of someone else. Upon first look, the city of Omelas seems like a fairy tale utopia where everyone is happy, yet underneath this veil of splendor, there is a child that is neglected and abused to the point of where some people are so sickened that they must leave Omelas. All of Omelas s glamour and joy depends solely on the suffering of this child, and if the child were to be rescued, all goodness in Omelas would be destroyed. In contrast, there are also people who are so disturbed by this dark secret of the child that they leave Omelas...toward [a] place...that [possibly] does not exist. But they seem to know where they are going (47). To leave Omelas for the unknown would need considerable courage, but they know that they will never be truly happy staying in Omelas. Many ads are trying to sell specific items; but if a person really analyses the ad, the company is selling or promoting more than one item. In this ad the company Gibson is promoting a specific guitar to be sold. In the ad there is a six string, electric guitar standing up with the wording, If this doesn t get you laid you should just commit suicide. In the lower right hand corner of the ad, the company s name Gibson is printed. This six string guitar is popular for beginning music artists. In this ad the company Gibson is using pathos, ethos, and logos to get the audience s attention. The Gibson guitar ad explicitly sells guitars, but it implicitly sells sex and suicide. Gibson guitars are directing this ad to older teenage and young male adults. The audience is young enough that they are still debating on what career path that they want to go down. To some of this audience, this ad would grab their attention by thinking this guitar should get them laid. This aspect would be directed mainly towards young males. Also, some guitars give the sexy and spontaneous impression, which in a young male s eyes, is a perfect career. He says Rogers believed self esteem developed from how our parents interacted with us (McLeod, 2014). Simply, self image is how we see ourselves (McLeod, 2014). McLeod (2014) mentions that Self image influences how a person thinks, feels and behaves in the world. According to McLeod (2014), our ideal self is who we desire to be. Basically, the closer a persons self image and ideal self are to each other the higher one s self esteem becomes. Rogers developed Person centered therapy. Rogers basic tenet was that if unconditional positive regard (Respect), genuineness and honesty (Congruence), and empathic understanding (Empathy) were present in a relationship, growth and psychological healing would occur ( Carl, 2017). McLeod(2014) suggest that incongruence exist when a person s self concept does not match reality. For example, a student who makes good grades on test might think they are a great student, when in reality they never come to class and lie to the teacher with excuses. According to McLeod(2014) Conditional positive regard is when the person is loved depending on correct and acceptable behaviors (McLeod, 2014). The Civil War broke America in two groups and, at the time, was the war with the most casualties and injured men. As the fight to preserve the Union progressed, so did a number of other areas, such as weaponry and artillery. The advanced technology produced through the Civil War assisted in increasing number of casualties. The North was more fortuitous than the South in multitudinous ways. Unfortunately, the South had a large disadvantage in this area. The Confederacy was dependent on stolen weapons to fight in the war (Morgan). Although the South advanced in agriculture, this did not assist them in producing a high quality and quantity of weaponry and artillery. Artillery caused a greater commotion than weaponry amongst people. It was better at targeting and accurately shooting targets. The Parrott rifle, as previously mentioned, was used frequently yet was unpopular amongst the soldiers. As a solution, the 3 inch Ordnance replaced the Parrott rifle. This cannon was more accurate and had a longer range, up to about 2,300 yards. It was a hundred pounds lighter than the Parrott. The Union army produced about a thousand Ordnances. Lacking the technology, the Confederates did not and could not produce them. However, the Ordnance was unnecessary during most battles since the shooter had to see his target in order to shoot with any accuracy (Morgan). The Ordnance, though not necessary, was a commonly used weapon. In order to solve the flaws of the Ordnance, the Napoleon was created. It is believed that the Napoleon was the cause of more artillery casualties than all the other models combined during the Civil War. However, the description of the culture creates an ideology that is hard to agree with. For example, the Nacirema peoples take part in a rite that involves hog hairs and magical powders. With this way of thinking in mind, we could study the Nacirema peoples without any judgment. If we can come to terms with our ethnocentric views, we can quickly analyze the wrong way of thinking. In this presentation I will be discussing the perspectives of reader response and sociological criticism, in the film Slumdog Millionaire. My personal relation to the film has changed my perspective in my attitude towards certain aspects of Indian life. I am more compassionate towards the situation in which most Indians in Mumbai live in as not all circumstances are in their control, regarding to the social structure of Indian society. • 49. The Human Cost Of An Illiterate Society By Jonathan Kozol Statistically, based on reports from 2003, 99% of the total population ages 15 and over can read and write (CIA Library). Thus, one can conclude illiteracy is not a crisis. However, The Human Cost of an Illiterate Society by Jonathan Kozol, implies something different. Kozol emphasizes the hardship of an illiterate, and briefly explains the importance of helping an illiterate without providing much of a solution, while Kozol s essay was ineffective overall because of the lack of factual evidence and flawed conclusions, his strategic use of tone, repetition and rhetorical questioning provided some strength to his argument. By establishing a sympathetic tone, Kozol effectively appeals our emotions, which provides slight strength to his argument. For example, Kozol explains his dream he experienced where he was in the Soviet, Then I remember that my card was confiscated for some reason, many years before. Around this point, I wake up in a panic (2). Kozol s tone illustrates how helpless the illiterates are and wants to appeal to our emotion of sympathy as he draws comparison to the same troubles and emotions he experienced in his dream as illiterates experience daily. That emotional impact provided some strength to his argument because it allows us to imagine an experience, which may be unfamiliar. Kozol insinuates that illiterates match logos printed on packages to distinguish the differences amongst food. Kozol points out, The purchaser who cannot read and does not dare ...
