Sugar Act 1765
In this lesson, it explained the different act that cause people to pay taxes. In High School, we learned
about the Sugar act, Stamp act and Boston Tea Party. The Sugar act was appoint by Georgie the third.
The act required people to pay taxes on sugar and other item. I find it hard to believe people had to
pay taxes on sugar, I guess sugar was very valuable in that time period. The Sugar act was created to
pay for the Quartering Act of 1765. People who fail to pay their taxes had to go to sugar court. In
1765, the British government passed another law that increase the taxes on the colonies. The American
people were furious about this. So, the people form a group cause The Son of Liberty. The Son of
Liberty boycott against items from England.

Literary Devices In Richard Cory
The narrative poem, Richard Cory , written in 1893 by the poet Edwin Arlington Robinson, narrates
the story of Richard Cory, a fictional character, a man who seems to have it all. The people in the town
belong to lower financial class and seem to worship him because of his position, they look up to him
and they want to be like him. Richard Cory takes his own life at the end of the poem, which shows,
that appearance and money cannot buy happiness or fulfillment. This poem is narrated in the third
person plural, where we represents the citizens of the small town in which Richard Cory resides and
where he is considered part of the royalty for his wealth and well educated self. The title of this poem
suggests Richard s destiny; because according to the meaning the name, Richard derives from
German, French and English Ric (ruler, leader, king, powerful) and Hard (strong, brave, hardy) and it
therefore means strong in rule the perfect name for the perfect guy. Robinson had a rough childhood,
since he described his own childhood as stark and unhappy which led his poetry to have a huge
amount of dark pessimism within each line. Robinson utilizes literary devices in his composition such
as, connotations that suggest to the reader that Richard Cord belongs to the royalty. He mentions sole
to crown, (3) imperially slim, (4) and schooled in every grace, (10), this connotation emphasizes
Richard s position as local royalty and portrays him as the ideal man. The poem

Costa Ric A Central American Country
Costa Rica is a Central American country located between Panama and Nicaragua. The west and east
coast of Costa Rica are facing the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. The main language spoken is Spanish,
although English is widely heard. This country is very popular among surfers because the most
powerful waves known to man are enjoyed in the town of Tamarindo. Costa Rica is the safest country
in the region because of its booming economy and general friendliness of the people. Also, majority of
the country covers jungles and rainforests. Many U.S. citizens travel here to experience the untouched

Central American country. The average life expectancy is 80 years for both men and women. A quality
culture, cheap healthcare, and a low crime rate contribute to this high rate. Some of the most
dangerous Central American countries are near Costa Rica, but they mostly don t affect the country.
Life expectancy and quality of life is actually increasing every year in Costa Rica. This rate is
exceptionally high compared to the rest of the world, including the U.S. It has one of the best
healthcare systems which is why a lot of Westerners retire to this tropical country. On the flip side,
there are some natural borne diseases that derive from the rainforests areas, but whatever ailment a
traveler has there is a herb found in the jungles that can most likely cure it. Sometimes mosquito borne
diseases such Malaria is imminent in the swamp areas. On the bright side, there are no vaccinations
required to enter Costa Rica so that implies the country is generally safe. Main Health Issues Ash

Wuthering Heights Summary
Set in the wild, rugged country of Yorkshire in northern England during the late eighteenth century,
Emily Bronte s masterpiece novel, Wuthering Heights, clearly illustrates the conflict between the
principles of storm and calm ;. The reoccurring theme of this story is captured by the intense, almost
inhuman love between Catherine and Heathcliff and the numerous barriers preventing their union.
The fascinating tale of Wuthering Heights is told mainly through the eyes of Nelly Dean, the former
servant to the two great estates, to Mr. Lockwood, the current tenant of the Grange.
The tale of Wuthering Heights begins with the respectable Earnshaw family. After a his trip to
Liverpool, old Mr. Earnshaw returns home to Wuthering Heights with ... Show more content on

The once peaceful life of Catherine and Edgar is disrupted once again though with the reappearance of
Heathcliff, who has stayed in London for several years, improving his manners and education. Now
living with his sworn enemy, Hindley, a pronounced drunkard since the death of his wife and birth of
his son, Hareton, Heathcliff enacts the first step in his plans of revenge by eloping with Isabella, Edgar
s sister.
Upon Heathcliff and Isabella s return to Wuthering Heights, Heathcliff with Nelly s aid manages one
last, forbidden visit to the Grange, where Catherine, the expectant mother, is residing. Unfortunately,
the shock of Heathcliff s visit causes the premature birth of Catherine s child and eventually Catherine
dies. Insane with grief, Heathcliff works with a vengeance to achieve revenge against all those around
him. Isabella, who now realizes her dire mistake, is unable to cope with Heathcliff any longer and
escapes to London, where she gives birth to a sickly baby named Linton. Years later with the death of
Hindley and Isabella, Wuthering Heights and Linton both become the possessions of Heathcliff.
Aware of Heathcliff s fiendish, vengeful nature, Edgar Linton is careful of his daughter s
acquaintances and whereabouts; he, however, is unsuccessful in his attempts to keep Cathy away from

A Tribute To The Mayan Culture
Being one of the first art shows, that I have ever had the pleasure of viewing, I am pleased to write,
that the works displayed, at the Beyond Art Gallery on the evening of September 30th the finest, and
certainly most impressive I have ever seen. It was made so by the awe inspiring works of one Andy A.
Villarreal, a San Antonio native, whose excellent artwork is heavily influenced by
Mesoamerican/Yucatan culture. On this particular night his work was showcased as the main
attraction of the exhibit A Tribute to the Mayan Culture . The centerpiece of this exhibit was an oil
paint on canvas work, which is clearly religious. Yet it is coupled with elements of culture in such a
way that each man or woman who views the work shall interpret both the blatant and the seemingly
insignificant details differently. This work has been ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The cross rises higher than any of the other Mayan temples. A great white bird appears to have just
landed upon the cross. With such a great emphasis upon the cross I would be hard pressed to find
anyone who did not focus on it immediately. However I myself was startled by appearance of the great
white bird landing upon the cross. A metaphor, which I did not believe I would ever see used. I
immediately recalled a portion of Mayan oral history, which was along the lines of this. The Katun is
established at Chichen Itza. The settlement of the Itza shall take place there. The quetzal shall come,
the great bird shall come. Al Kantanel shall come. It is the word of god. The Itza shall come. It was
clear to me that this painting depicts a coming of the Mayan people to Christianity. The bird is also in
general symbolic of freedom. I believe that this work makes reference to when Jesus, speaking in
regard to those who were willing to come to Him declared It is then, that you shall know the truth, and
the truth shall set you

Evil In The Tell Tale Heart
The glint of the vulture eye shown through the dark night. Suddenly, it slightly opens, blinded from
the light. It can t see the being behind the light. Is it a green, slimy monster, or one of its own
kind...human? Horror is an exhilarating genre for all audiences to read. The Tell Tale Heart is about a
diseased man who murders his employer for having a paranoid eye. In the story The Tell Tale Heart ,
by Edgar Allen Poe, the three elements of horror: monster, poor choices, and advanced knowledge are
applied very well. One of the first elements of horror in The Tell Tale Heart is monster. Monster is a
creature or human, usually a character, they have a history and have developed as a character over a
period time. Most of the time, they torment other characters in the story. The narrator of The Tell Tale
Heart is the monster. In the story, the narrator explains that, In an instant I dragged him to ... Show

Poor choices is when a character does something and trouble is an expected or end result to the
situation. This element is in the story a lot, with the narrator, when killing the old man and the events
leading up to the killing. While watching the old man, the narrator described, I made up my mind to
take the life of the old man (Poe,295). The narrator is not thinking about what will happen as
consequences to this action. If the narrator had not made this decision to kill the man, this whole story
would have stopped and been boring. Lastly, the narrator stated, NOw you may think that I drew back
but no (Poe, 297). The poor choices element, is a decision and this quote says the decision he had and
how he chose not to draw back and stop there. If the narrator had stopped then, nothing in his life
would have changed, and the old man would ve never known, but now he s in jail telling this story.
Clearly, the element poor choices is developed in the story

war in squalid offshore detention centres reports Robert Barak Kibaja.
This poignant photograph of a refugee girl named Hudea (above) has instigated outpouring heart

Gentrification And Its Oppressed Residents Essay
The U.S. Gentrification and its Oppressed Residents For the past two decades, gentrification has
become a widely known phenomenon in the U.S. as more wealthy cohorts of population move to quiet
and cheap suburban areas instead of bearing the busy and costly lives in a big city. Changes brought
by the influx of affluent newcomers in the suburban areas are often praised for fostering urban renewal
as well as animating the areas local economy. However, the impacts of gentrification cause several
types of new problems which now afflict long time, low income residents in gentrifying
neighborhoods. With the soaring prices of the real estate market, landlords harassment against low
income tenants, and rising living expenses, gentrification further augments the inequality and conflicts
between the poor and rich inhabitants.
Historically, many of the suburban towns and neighborhoods around the major U.S. cities served as
homes to poor and minority residents, offering cheaper living spaces due to the marginalized and
inconvenient geographical locations with several negative reputations. Yet, given the big cities
overcrowded environment and expensive living cost, these suburban areas are now popular
destinations for people who seek for a less crowded and affordable neighborhood to dwell. According
to statistics by Kolko (2016), in 2015, the population of overall U.S. suburban neighborhoods
increased by 159 million people, while only the total of less than 80 million

Analysis Of John Keats s The Civil War
Shelby Foote, a southern novelist turned historian, uses the prologue in The Civil War, a three book,
three thousand page epic on America s most seminal moment, to introduce the war s leading figures,
Abraham Lincoln and Jefferson Davis. Foote uses the words of poet John Keats, A fact is not a truth
until you love it. to describe his view on history. Using this axiom, Foote attempts to change the reader
s mind on their understanding of Lincoln and Davis. Not only does he want to prove to us that using
primary sources in his analysis of Lincoln and Davis will give us a better understanding of the two,
but he wants us to appreciate his techniques as well. He juxtaposes the two presidents, providing an
authentic glimpse into their character ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
18 19). Lincoln grew up dirt poor in the bare Kentucky frontier, his mother dying when he was nine
years old, and his father having a paltry, insignificant relationship with the young Abraham. Lincoln
quoted Thomas Gray s poem, Elegy, when describing the conditions of his youth, The short and
simple annals of the poor. (pg. 20). As soon as he could, he sought independence from his father and
began life on his own. He eventually settled in New Salem, Illinois where he joined the Debating
Society. As Foote puts it, though at first the charter members snickered at his looks and awkwardness,
presently they were admiring the logic and conciseness of his arguments (pg. 22). One member of the
society claimed all he lacked was culture (pg. 22). Lincoln was respected for his intelligence, but
derided for his social skills and poor background. Certainly this part of Lincoln s life is of the least
importance, but it serves a purpose for Foote, who aims to portray Lincoln in a more vulnerable part
of his life, when he wasn t revered like he would later be, but viewed with pity as a backwoods hick.
This serves as a shock to the reader, disarming us of any romantic notions we have of Lincoln s early
life. Lincoln unquestionably developed into one of the most remarkable men to ever live, but, as Foote
shows us, it took him awhile to reach that status. Alongside politics, Lincoln made a name for himself

Pine Barrens Definition

Blueberry and Cranberry farming have been around forever. New Jersey is a great place for them to
grow because of the necessities they need to grow. New Jersey has many bogs which is where
cranberries are grown. Also the acidic soil, abundant soil moisture, and great drainage so the
blueberries get air during the growing season is naturally suited for the blueberries to grow. Iron
making was important in the 1700s and 1800s. Iron was used to create weapons and kitchen utilities
which were very important in that time. However when coal was discovered in Pennsylvania the iron
industries crumbled. Hunting, gathering and trapping have been in the Pine Barrens for 300 years. The
abundant number of animals and plants in the Pinelands give people something to hunt and gather.
Hundreds of years ago this was essential however today it is regarded as recreation.
The Pine Barrens are very important to the millions of people living in it. The Pine Barrens is very
interesting and has a rich past. The Kirkwood Cohansey aquifer is important to the people that depend

her articles entitled I Want a wife was first published by The feminist magazine Ms. in 1972. After she
wrote it she reprinted it as Why I [Still] Want a Wife in Ms. in
1990 ( Judy Brady. ). The reason she wrote, I Want a wife was because at that time women were
fighting for the right to become an equal in the eyes of society and winning the battle in more ways

Each sentence she composes is a candidly charged depiction of what men anticipate from their ladies,
and how she trusts this isn t the way lady ought to experience their lives. My most loved some portion
of this article draws close to the end, where Brady has gone over every one of the things men expect
and closes with a cunning yet hilarious completion. She stated that after every one of the things that
men require out of their ladies, at last, they can simply supplant them with somebody more
appropriate? I trust this was the most genuine piece of her exposition, and trust she accomplished in
achieving ladies of that period. Now, rather than men attempting to make their spouses get things done
for them, they enlist housekeepers to do their undertakings. In the event that I, for one, could enlist
somebody to carry out specific employments for me the rundown could appear to be practically
boundless!
In my opinion what Brady is letting the reader know is very much needed. The wife or mother is the
one who mostly takes care of the children. In the article, Brady said, I want a wife to make sure my
children eat properly and are kept clean. I want a wife who will wash the children s clothes and keep
them mended. I want a wife who is a good nurturant attendant to my children, who arranges for their
schooling, makes sure that they have an adequate social life with their peers, takes them to the park,

Benefits And Risks Of Mass Digital Adoption
I am part of a generation of economists that grew up online. Thus, I have witnessed the growth
promise and disruptive potential of Internet based technologies driven by their capacity to amplify and
propagate economic phenomena. I want to develop and test theories about the economy wide impact
of digital technologies. My (micro)empiricist side built working with Amy Finkelstein at NBER and
Edward Miguel at UC Berkeley tells me to trust data more than anecdotal evidence. Simultaneously,
my (macro)theorist side developed at Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF), UC Berkeley, and LSE
reminds me to look at patterns in a system rather than in isolation. Combining my macro and
development interests, I crafted a research agenda to explore the benefits and risks of mass digital
adoption. For this proposal I received the La Caixa Fellowship Spain s NSF equivalent to fund my
future graduate studies in Economics, which I hope to have the chance to pursue at MIT.
Preparing for Spain s Economics Olympiad during the Great Recession kickstarted my fascination

Canadian Water Debate
Water Debate
Selling our water will be beneficial to Canadians because it will create new jobs and help out the
economy, we could have Canada trade its water for other natural resources instead of just selling it.
With Canada having 20% of the world s fresh water and 9% of the world s renewable fresh water
means that we will have enough to sell and trade with other countries and to keep for our own.
Canadians waste a lot of water mainly by flushing the toilet takes up 30% of the water, bathing 35%,
20% drinking and 10% cooking. Canadians could easily cut down on water by enforcing laws to
making water more expensive or even cutting down the time they use the water. Around the world 1.4
Billion people are lacking clean drinking water with Canada s population being just around 35 million.
Each year seven million from all around the world die year from diseases linked to unsanitary water
and the problem is getting worse each year.
Other countries that are in need of water will come after Canada first because Canadians have a lot of
water with low population making it an easy target for them to attack for water.
If Canadians sold water to other countries it would prevent future wars from happening and people
dying from diseases.

Sympatric Speciation Essay

What is the difference between Allopatric Speciation and Sympatric Speciation?
Allopatric Speciation refers to an outside source begetting geographic separation between two or more
groups of animals obviating them from copulating with each other and leading to the speciation of
their lineage (University of California Museum of Paleontology, 2016a). In contrast, Sympatric
Speciation does not involve physical separation, but instead occurs when development of a habitat
reduces gene flow between a species (University of California Museum of Paleontology, 2016e). For
example, a species of bug typically lays its eggs on oranges, but the introduction of peaches to their
environment spurs some of the species to lay their eggs on the peaches instead. Moreover, with this

Out of the four lines of evidence, I have chosen evidence by example. Though no technology exists
that would empower scientists with the ability to travel into the past and directly observe the
evolutionary process, scientists can observe evolution via artificial selection in a laboratory or note
how modern organisms relate to each other to obtain an augmented understanding of how animals
acclimate to their environment (University of California Museum of Paleontology, 2016c).

The Importance Of Exploration In The Modern World
Many explorers in our modern world are trying to see what the outside of our planet looks like. Before
they go deeper into their exploration they need to do more research about it and they go out there to
see what is really going on. What are they going to find? Is there a danger here? The influence of how
many European explorers wanted to explore the world have an impact on the modern world explorers.
For example, Christopher Columbus who had the desire to explore eastern of India but unfortunately,
his plan did not work. Alternately, he landed in the Caribbean islands. In the same way, today s
explorers in our modern world are eager to explore space. But instead of that, they always discover
something new and they put all their attention in this new discovery.Humans have always dreamed of
visiting space, to know what is really happening outside our planet. What is it in space? The
exploration of space, sometimes called the conquest of space, consists of the physical exploration of
space, that is to say of all the objects external to space. Earth. The exploration of the solar system is
the first step, one of the major scientific events of the second half of the twentieth century, but also
more broadly for our societies, by the prodigious expansion of this new frontier. The idea of sending

physically and materially possible. During the second half of the twentieth century,

There were many cases like these that inevitably made the problem of not knowing how to find
longitude into an all out panic to solve it. Shipwreck after shipwreck, it became hard to ignore the
issue at hand, so Parliament took action. In 1714, after countless merchants and seamen demanded
help to find a solution Queen Anne put into action the Longitude Act, which was accompanied by
three sets of money prizes. The first prize was in the amount of £20,000 and you had to come close to
at least a half of a degree of a great circle. The second prize was in the amount of £15,000 and you had
to be in two thirds of a degree, and finally, the third prize was £10,000 and that had to be within one
degree. Along with the Longitude Act in order to figure out if methods that were proposed and
explained were accurate, they created a Board of Longitude. The Board of Longitude was made up of
many people like scientists, naval officers, and government officials but there were also ex officio
members on the board as well. The board was given the ability to give out funds and grants to help
competitors further their discoveries and help better them in order to discover a method of finding

possess a language but also he doubt whether a physical object can engage in reasoning,
Hence the statements 1 2 become,
1. Minds can engage in reasoning.
2. No physical object can engage in reasoning.
Therefore,
3. Minds are not physical objects.
According to this argument it is very difficult to derive the fact that any physical object can engage in
reasoning. Considering mathemetical reasoning, no computers/machines are capable of reasoning or
manipulate something on it own, it is programmed in such a manner to work in such way. Similary,
the brain is a physical object which is programmed by the mind to engage in reasoning. Hence, it says
that the mind is not a physical

Baroque Art And The Baroque Era
Baroque Ornamentation
The use of ornamentation in Baroque music was a creative, and sometimes improvised outlet for
period musicians that spurred from human instinct to manipulate melodic material. This urge to
change melodic material by altering the rhythm, or melody can be seen throughout history. Music
including Gregorian chant, which predates the Baroque era, contains some elements of ornamentation.
It can be seen throughout the Baroque, Classical era, and even in modern music. Although
improvisation has been repressed by modern conventions of performance, it shows itself in the style of
improvised jazz and avant garde free improvisation. Performers use improvisation as a means of self
expression and a way to express composer intent. During the Baroque era, there were many different
styles and methods of ornamentation depending on location, style, date, and composer of a piece of
music. Understanding the historical developments of the Baroque era and the development of
ornamentation can help modern performers of Baroque music better understand how to play a more
historically accurate performance. The Baroque era lasted from about 1600 to 1750. The music from
the Baroque began to develop contrapuntally and in harmonic complexity. Composers also relied on
the performers ability to add ornamentation and to complete the harmonies in a basso continue score
through improvisation. These scores consisted of a bass line with numbers and symbols written above,
to indicate the

Leonhard Euler s Life As Well As Some Of His Mathematical...
Abstract This paper is on the Swiss astronomer, physicist, engineer and mathematician Leonhard
Euler. Euler made fundamental contributions to the world of mathematics and science. His
mathematical studies range from analytic geometry, infinitesimal calculus, graph theory and topology.
He introduced many of the notations one uses in today s modern mathematics. This paper will focus
on Leonhard Euler s life and some of his scientific and mathematical works.
Index Terms Calculus, Geometry, Leonhard Euler, Number Theory.
Introduction
Leonhard Euler was a Swiss physicist, astronomer and mathematician. Euler is one of the greatest
mathematicians of the 18th century. He made great contributions to many areas of mathematics such
as geometry, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Two of his most famous works are Introductio in analysin infinitorum, a text on functions, and
Institutiones calculi differentialis on differential calculus [3].
In 1766, Euler returned to Russia and after an illness, he became entirely blind. Euler had a
remarkable memory that he was able to continue with his work on optics, algebra, and lunar motion
[5]. By the age of 59, Euler had produced half of his total work despite being blind. Leonhard Euler
suffered a brain hemorrhage and died at the age of 76, on September 18, 1783. Fifty years after Euler s
death his work was still being published by the St. Petersburg Academy.
Number Theory
Euler became interested in Number Theory thanks to his friend Christian Goldbach in the St.
Petersburg Academy. Euler s work in number theory included topics such as the study of perfect
numbers, the quadratic reciprocity law, the so called Pell equation, and Fermat s Last Theorem, to
name just a few [1].
In 1735, Euler proved that the sum of the reciprocals of the primes diverges. This problem was known
as the Basel problem and Euler s colleagues, the Bernoulli s, had attempted the problem but failed to
solve it. He also showed that the infinite series was equivalent to an infinite product of prime numbers,
an identity that would later inspire Riemann s investigation of complex Zeta functions [4].
In the upcoming years, Euler developed Euler s Theorem also known as Fermat Euler Theorem based

Adoption Vs Closed Adoption Essay
Within the United States adoption has been evolved markedly, once it was used to normalize a
childless marriage (The Free Dictionary, n.d.) or prevent the shame of an adoptee at their illegitimate
birth or an unwed mother social staning (Fair, 2008) now the primary focus rather is the child s best
interests, a better life. Adoption is a long standing social behavior that involves a person other than the
biological or legal parents of an individual assuming a parenting role in a permanent fashion in the
eyes of the law (Health of children, n.d.; The Free Dictionary, n.d.). Through the declaration of legal
paperwork a non biological parent can adopt a child into their home. It must be acknowledged that

Many factors are given weight in the decision to allow a child to be adopted such as socio economic
status, marital status, age, health and the ability for a child to integrate in to the perspective parent s
life (The Free Dictionary, n.d.). Within the adoption process there are two primary types: closed
adoptions and open adoptions (Family Education, 2016). A closed adoption is where there is no
contact between the adopters and the birth parents putting the child up for adoption. Also known as a
confidential adoption it is performed through an intermediary who is responsible for all
communication such as an attorney (Family Education, 2016). There is also no contact between the
adopted child and his or her biological parents later in life without court intervention. The other
avenue of adoption perused more commonly now is an open adoption where the adopters and birth
parents are in full communication through out the process (Family Education, 2016). Adoption has
gone through an evolution where previously closed adoptions were heavily favored; open adoptions
are now becoming more common practice. In the United States on five states currently give adoptees
uninhibited access to their adoption records (Fair, 2008:

Metaphors In Dante s Inferno
Dante Alighieri was one of the most inspiring Italian poets in the middle ages. One of his greatest
writings is about the afterlife, from the depths of Hell in his own made Inferno, into the mountains of
Purgatory and in the ever lasting spirits of Heaven called the Paradiso. But my main focus on this
essay is what in Dante s life inspired him to write like he did, particularly his Inferno. Questions and
history may lead us to believe that was it was his love, war or political view that shaped him as an
artist. There is a gap in his history with some unknowns for the simplest things like what was his birth
date. But some metaphors from his Divine Comedy may answer these questions.
Even today, Dante is inspiring artists with his writings and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Florence at this time being a loathed, despised, derogated community with corruption and discard,
Dante Alighieri lived most of his days working on his writings that will last hundreds of years. Church
versus independence of the city states gave Dante the motivation to get involved of becoming a
member of political governing body. In this time Florence has split into two parties, Guelphs who
support the pope and Ghibellines that support the Roman Emperor with the need of more freedom.
Dante was part of the White Guelphs and fought in war of his cause but with seeing life and death in
the horrific battle of war, this may have lead to vision of his own Hell. Dante was exiled from the city
by Black Guelphs or else he would be burned to the stake in result of his family having to split apart
leaving behind his wife Gemma Donati and his four children. Dante spent 20 years drifting from city
to city thinking about his long lost love Beatrice who was once a childhood sweetheart and also his
writings that would be for nothing without his mentor Brunetto Latino. Eventually Florence granted
amnesty to Florentines in exile but required to pay a large fine, Dante just preferred his drifter days in
exile with no plans to return to

The Philosopher s Stone And The Elixir Of Life
The work I chose for my Independent Reading was the novel Frankenstein by Mary Shelley. I desired
to read this book for quite some time but was adamant about reading it, purely because I did not want
to engage in such a well known classic. Throughout my time hearing about Frankenstein, I have
become brainwashed into believing that the Monster Frankenstein had created was nothing more than
a mere brainless creatures bent on destruction. I approached this novel with that mindset. Just a little
while ago, while researching the Philosopher s Stone and the Elixir of Life for methods to bring these
two ideas into reality (the latter more than the former), I came across a brief mention of this novel,
Frankenstein. In the brief mention I had read, it indicated that these two ideas were stated in ... Show

I immediately sought the book out. Once I began the book I realized that it was unputdownable, so
much so that I immersed myself for countless hours through the night and well into the next morning
reading this novel from cover to cover. Once I did put the book down I was drenched in a moment of
anger and admiration, both steaming from the overall plot and characters of the novel and the
figurative concept that protruded between the lines.
Primary, classifying this novel in one of Christopher Booker s The Seven Basic Plots was undoubtedly
a challenge. The challenge began when I realized how the story was told. It was not merely an
intellectual summary of events told as a story by Victor Frankenstein. It was a story, recorded by a
sailor named Robert Walton, and told via letters to his beloved sister Margaret

The One Who Flew Over The Cuckoo s Nest Literary Analysis
Undeniably, Ken Kesey s intention throughout the novel of The One Who Flew Over The Cuckoo s
Nest was to enlighten us to a new world of understanding about the complexities of human nature.
From observations on the internal and external conflicts between a rebel and a follower within a
suppressive microcosm of society, we are elevated to the understanding of how through human nature,
both conflicting figures are inevitably destroyed and further reinforces the social order. Thus, Kesey
resolves this complication by inspiring us to be neither a rebel nor a follower, but convinces us
throughout the text to take a third option in being a spectator that learns from the mistakes made by
others in order to truly escape the repressing order of society. ... Show more content on

Because of this Kesey warns us about the consequences of rebellion through the emphasis on the
symbolic feature of the electroshock therapy table. This image of the table symbolises the
consequences as well as the Nurse s power which is used to plant fear within individuals preventing
them from stepping out of line and becoming disobedient to the system. As a consequence to
McMurphy s effort in teaching about the importance of individualism and the impudence of
conformity, he was given several ruthless electric shocks. The ruthless, abusive treatments that are
given to patients who opposes the system, portrays the tactics used by the authorities as a way of
maintaining this social order. Thus we are informed about the harsh consequences of disobedience.
Additionally, Kesey also takes advantage over the diction combine . Chief mentions how the Combine
which is a huge organisation that aims to adjust the Outside as well as she has the Inside , the diction
fully represents the idea of a mechanical force on society that represses individuals, manipulating and
controlling their movement. The significance of the combine which is a machine that harvests wheat,
symbolises the mechanical nature of the hospital and the way in which individuals are cut down and
controlled. McMurphy who embodies spontaneity, individuality and freedom opposed too big of a
threat to the system and thus through the authority of the combine was eventually lobotomised.
Concurrently this idea of rebels being stood down is once again proposed when the nurse states how
the patients are all under the jurisdiction and control of hers, this example shows the dominance and
control she has on the patients and the way she waits on the sidelines with a needle expresses the
violence and power used to suppress rebels from opposing the system that

The Sugar act was appoint by Georgie the third. The act required people to pay taxes on sugar and other item. I find it hard to believe people had to pay taxes on sugar, I guess sugar was very valuable in that time period. The Sugar act was created to pay for the Quartering Act of 1765. People who fail to pay their taxes had to go to sugar court. In 1765, the British government passed another law that increase the taxes on the colonies. The American people were furious about this. • 3. Literary Devices In Richard Cory The narrative poem, Richard Cory , written in 1893 by the poet Edwin Arlington Robinson, narrates the story of Richard Cory, a fictional character, a man who seems to have it all. The people in the town belong to lower financial class and seem to worship him because of his position, they look up to him and they want to be like him. Richard Cory takes his own life at the end of the poem, which shows, that appearance and money cannot buy happiness or fulfillment. This poem is narrated in the third person plural, where we represents the citizens of the small town in which Richard Cory resides and where he is considered part of the royalty for his wealth and well educated self. The title of this poem suggests Richard s destiny; because according to the meaning the name, Richard derives from German, French and English Ric (ruler, leader, king, powerful) and Hard (strong, brave, hardy) and it therefore means strong in rule the perfect name for the perfect guy. Robinson had a rough childhood, since he described his own childhood as stark and unhappy which led his poetry to have a huge amount of dark pessimism within each line. Robinson utilizes literary devices in his composition such as, connotations that suggest to the reader that Richard Cord belongs to the royalty. He mentions sole to crown, (3) imperially slim, (4) and schooled in every grace, (10), this connotation emphasizes Richard s position as local royalty and portrays him as the ideal man. The poem ... • 5. Wuthering Heights Summary Set in the wild, rugged country of Yorkshire in northern England during the late eighteenth century, Emily Bronte s masterpiece novel, Wuthering Heights, clearly illustrates the conflict between the principles of storm and calm ;. The reoccurring theme of this story is captured by the intense, almost inhuman love between Catherine and Heathcliff and the numerous barriers preventing their union. The fascinating tale of Wuthering Heights is told mainly through the eyes of Nelly Dean, the former servant to the two great estates, to Mr. Lockwood, the current tenant of the Grange. The tale of Wuthering Heights begins with the respectable Earnshaw family. After a his trip to Liverpool, old Mr. Earnshaw returns home to Wuthering Heights with ... Unfortunately, the shock of Heathcliff s visit causes the premature birth of Catherine s child and eventually Catherine dies. Insane with grief, Heathcliff works with a vengeance to achieve revenge against all those around him. Isabella, who now realizes her dire mistake, is unable to cope with Heathcliff any longer and escapes to London, where she gives birth to a sickly baby named Linton. Years later with the death of Hindley and Isabella, Wuthering Heights and Linton both become the possessions of Heathcliff. • 6. A Tribute To The Mayan Culture Being one of the first art shows, that I have ever had the pleasure of viewing, I am pleased to write, that the works displayed, at the Beyond Art Gallery on the evening of September 30th the finest, and certainly most impressive I have ever seen. It was made so by the awe inspiring works of one Andy A. Villarreal, a San Antonio native, whose excellent artwork is heavily influenced by Mesoamerican/Yucatan culture. On this particular night his work was showcased as the main attraction of the exhibit A Tribute to the Mayan Culture . The centerpiece of this exhibit was an oil paint on canvas work, which is clearly religious. Yet it is coupled with elements of culture in such a way that each man or woman who views the work shall interpret both the blatant and the seemingly insignificant details differently. With such a great emphasis upon the cross I would be hard pressed to find anyone who did not focus on it immediately. However I myself was startled by appearance of the great white bird landing upon the cross. A metaphor, which I did not believe I would ever see used. I immediately recalled a portion of Mayan oral history, which was along the lines of this. The Katun is established at Chichen Itza. The settlement of the Itza shall take place there. The quetzal shall come, the great bird shall come. Al Kantanel shall come. It is the word of god. The Itza shall come. It was clear to me that this painting depicts a coming of the Mayan people to Christianity. The bird is also in general symbolic of freedom. I believe that this work makes reference to when Jesus, speaking in regard to those who were willing to come to Him declared It is then, that you shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you ... Is it a green, slimy monster, or one of its own kind...human? Horror is an exhilarating genre for all audiences to read. The Tell Tale Heart is about a diseased man who murders his employer for having a paranoid eye. In the story The Tell Tale Heart , by Edgar Allen Poe, the three elements of horror: monster, poor choices, and advanced knowledge are applied very well. One of the first elements of horror in The Tell Tale Heart is monster. Monster is a creature or human, usually a character, they have a history and have developed as a character over a period time. Most of the time, they torment other characters in the story. The narrator of The Tell Tale Heart is the monster. In the story, the narrator explains that, In an instant I dragged him to ... If the narrator had not made this decision to kill the man, this whole story would have stopped and been boring. Lastly, the narrator stated, NOw you may think that I drew back but no (Poe, 297). The poor choices element, is a decision and this quote says the decision he had and how he chose not to draw back and stop there. • 9. Gentrification And Its Oppressed Residents Essay The U.S. Gentrification and its Oppressed Residents For the past two decades, gentrification has become a widely known phenomenon in the U.S. as more wealthy cohorts of population move to quiet and cheap suburban areas instead of bearing the busy and costly lives in a big city. Changes brought by the influx of affluent newcomers in the suburban areas are often praised for fostering urban renewal as well as animating the areas local economy. However, the impacts of gentrification cause several types of new problems which now afflict long time, low income residents in gentrifying neighborhoods. With the soaring prices of the real estate market, landlords harassment against low income tenants, and rising living expenses, gentrification further augments the inequality and conflicts between the poor and rich inhabitants. Historically, many of the suburban towns and neighborhoods around the major U.S. cities served as homes to poor and minority residents, offering cheaper living spaces due to the marginalized and inconvenient geographical locations with several negative reputations. Yet, given the big cities overcrowded environment and expensive living cost, these suburban areas are now popular destinations for people who seek for a less crowded and affordable neighborhood to dwell. According to statistics by Kolko (2016), in 2015, the population of overall U.S. suburban neighborhoods increased by 159 million people, while only the total of less than 80 million ... Analysis Of John Keats s The Civil War Shelby Foote, a southern novelist turned historian, uses the prologue in The Civil War, a three book, three thousand page epic on America s most seminal moment, to introduce the war s leading figures, Abraham Lincoln and Jefferson Davis. Foote uses the words of poet John Keats, A fact is not a truth until you love it. to describe his view on history. Using this axiom, Foote attempts to change the reader s mind on their understanding of Lincoln and Davis. Not only does he want to prove to us that using primary sources in his analysis of Lincoln and Davis will give us a better understanding of the two, but he wants us to appreciate his techniques as well. Lincoln grew up dirt poor in the bare Kentucky frontier, his mother dying when he was nine years old, and his father having a paltry, insignificant relationship with the young Abraham. Lincoln quoted Thomas Gray s poem, Elegy, when describing the conditions of his youth, The short and simple annals of the poor. (pg. 20). As soon as he could, he sought independence from his father and began life on his own. He eventually settled in New Salem, Illinois where he joined the Debating Society. As Foote puts it, though at first the charter members snickered at his looks and awkwardness, presently they were admiring the logic and conciseness of his arguments (pg. 22). One member of the society claimed all he lacked was culture (pg. 22). Lincoln was respected for his intelligence, but derided for his social skills and poor background. Certainly this part of Lincoln s life is of the least importance, but it serves a purpose for Foote, who aims to portray Lincoln in a more vulnerable part of his life, when he wasn t revered like he would later be, but viewed with pity as a backwoods hick. This serves as a shock to the reader, disarming us of any romantic notions we have of Lincoln s early life. Lincoln unquestionably developed into one of the most remarkable men to ever live, but, as Foote shows us, it took him awhile to reach that status. One of her articles entitled I Want a wife was first published by The feminist magazine Ms. in 1972. After she wrote it she reprinted it as Why I [Still] Want a Wife in Ms. in 1990 ( Judy Brady. ). The reason she wrote, I Want a wife was because at that time women were fighting for the right to become an equal in the eyes of society and winning the battle in more ways than one. Women had earned the right to an abortion, and finally the right to vote. Judy Brady s was a feminist, a political and environmental activist. She uses her writing to portray a message. She stated that after every one of the things that men require out of their ladies, at last, they can simply supplant them with somebody more appropriate? I trust this was the most genuine piece of her exposition, and trust she accomplished in achieving ladies of that period. Now, rather than men attempting to make their spouses get things done for them, they enlist housekeepers to do their undertakings. In the event that I, for one, could enlist somebody to carry out specific employments for me the rundown could appear to be practically boundless! In my opinion what Brady is letting the reader know is very much needed. The wife or mother is the one who mostly takes care of the children. In the article, Brady said, I want a wife to make sure my children eat properly and are kept clean. I want a wife who will wash the children s clothes and keep them mended. Thus, I have witnessed the growth promise and disruptive potential of Internet based technologies driven by their capacity to amplify and propagate economic phenomena. I want to develop and test theories about the economy wide impact of digital technologies. My (micro)empiricist side built working with Amy Finkelstein at NBER and Edward Miguel at UC Berkeley tells me to trust data more than anecdotal evidence. Simultaneously, my (macro)theorist side developed at Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF), UC Berkeley, and LSE reminds me to look at patterns in a system rather than in isolation. Combining my macro and development interests, I crafted a research agenda to explore the benefits and risks of mass digital adoption. For this proposal I received the La Caixa Fellowship Spain s NSF equivalent to fund my future graduate studies in Economics, which I hope to have the chance to pursue at MIT. Preparing for Spain s Economics Olympiad during the Great Recession kickstarted my fascination with economics. Since then, my upwards path towards a PhD has been full of thrilling positive shocks. • 14. Canadian Water Debate Water Debate Selling our water will be beneficial to Canadians because it will create new jobs and help out the economy, we could have Canada trade its water for other natural resources instead of just selling it. With Canada having 20% of the world s fresh water and 9% of the world s renewable fresh water means that we will have enough to sell and trade with other countries and to keep for our own. Canadians waste a lot of water mainly by flushing the toilet takes up 30% of the water, bathing 35%, 20% drinking and 10% cooking. Canadians could easily cut down on water by enforcing laws to making water more expensive or even cutting down the time they use the water. Around the world 1.4 Billion people are lacking clean drinking water with Canada s population being just around 35 million. Each year seven million from all around the world die year from diseases linked to unsanitary water and the problem is getting worse each year. • 16. Sympatric Speciation Essay Learning Journal Unit Seven What is the difference between Allopatric Speciation and Sympatric Speciation? Allopatric Speciation refers to an outside source begetting geographic separation between two or more groups of animals obviating them from copulating with each other and leading to the speciation of their lineage (University of California Museum of Paleontology, 2016a). In contrast, Sympatric Speciation does not involve physical separation, but instead occurs when development of a habitat reduces gene flow between a species (University of California Museum of Paleontology, 2016e). For example, a species of bug typically lays its eggs on oranges, but the introduction of peaches to their environment spurs some of the species to lay their eggs on the peaches instead. One of theses costumes was inspired from the movie, Grease, in the last scene during the song, You re the One that I Want. I based this costume on the outfit that Sandy , or Olivia Newton John, is wearing. The Polka dot dress was inspired by a dance costume that I have worn. What is it in space? The exploration of space, sometimes called the conquest of space, consists of the physical exploration of space, that is to say of all the objects external to space. Earth. The exploration of the solar system is the first step, one of the major scientific events of the second half of the twentieth century, but also more broadly for our societies, by the prodigious expansion of this new frontier. Shipwreck after shipwreck, it became hard to ignore the issue at hand, so Parliament took action. The first prize was in the amount of £20,000 and you had to come close to at least a half of a degree of a great circle. The second prize was in the amount of £15,000 and you had to be in two thirds of a degree, and finally, the third prize was £10,000 and that had to be within one degree. By filling the gaps in 1 2 we end up with 1. Minds can use language. 2. No physical object can use language. Therefore, 3. Minds are not physical objects. According to Descartes the syntax and symantics of the language are developed inside a nonphysical objects called mind and it according to him there seems to be a little reason to doubt that a physical object could use language meaningfully which can be constructed within a physical object. Therefore, the mind is a nonphysical object that contains language. Argument 2: Could a physical object reason? Descartes not only doubt that a physical object an possess a language but also he doubt whether a physical object can engage in reasoning, Hence the statements 1 2 become, 1. Minds can engage in reasoning. 2. No physical object can engage in reasoning. Therefore, 3. Minds are not physical objects. According to this argument it is very difficult to derive the fact that any physical object can engage in reasoning. Considering mathemetical reasoning, no computers/machines are capable of reasoning or manipulate something on it own, it is programmed in such a manner to work in such way. • 22. Baroque Art And The Baroque Era Baroque Ornamentation The use of ornamentation in Baroque music was a creative, and sometimes improvised outlet for period musicians that spurred from human instinct to manipulate melodic material. This urge to change melodic material by altering the rhythm, or melody can be seen throughout history. Music including Gregorian chant, which predates the Baroque era, contains some elements of ornamentation. It can be seen throughout the Baroque, Classical era, and even in modern music. Although improvisation has been repressed by modern conventions of performance, it shows itself in the style of improvised jazz and avant garde free improvisation. Performers use improvisation as a means of self expression and a way to express composer intent. During the Baroque era, there were many different styles and methods of ornamentation depending on location, style, date, and composer of a piece of music. Understanding the historical developments of the Baroque era and the development of ornamentation can help modern performers of Baroque music better understand how to play a more historically accurate performance. The Baroque era lasted from about 1600 to 1750. The music from the Baroque began to develop contrapuntally and in harmonic complexity. Composers also relied on the performers ability to add ornamentation and to complete the harmonies in a basso continue score through improvisation. These scores consisted of a bass line with numbers and symbols written above, to indicate the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In 1766, Euler returned to Russia and after an illness, he became entirely blind. Euler had a remarkable memory that he was able to continue with his work on optics, algebra, and lunar motion [5]. By the age of 59, Euler had produced half of his total work despite being blind. Leonhard Euler suffered a brain hemorrhage and died at the age of 76, on September 18, 1783. Fifty years after Euler s death his work was still being published by the St. Petersburg Academy. Number Theory Euler became interested in Number Theory thanks to his friend Christian Goldbach in the St. Petersburg Academy. Euler s work in number theory included topics such as the study of perfect numbers, the quadratic reciprocity law, the so called Pell equation, and Fermat s Last Theorem, to name just a few [1]. In 1735, Euler proved that the sum of the reciprocals of the primes diverges. This problem was known as the Basel problem and Euler s colleagues, the Bernoulli s, had attempted the problem but failed to solve it. He also showed that the infinite series was equivalent to an infinite product of prime numbers, an identity that would later inspire Riemann s investigation of complex Zeta functions [4]. • 28. The One Who Flew Over The Cuckoo s Nest Literary Analysis Undeniably, Ken Kesey s intention throughout the novel of The One Who Flew Over The Cuckoo s Nest was to enlighten us to a new world of understanding about the complexities of human nature. From observations on the internal and external conflicts between a rebel and a follower within a suppressive microcosm of society, we are elevated to the understanding of how through human nature, both conflicting figures are inevitably destroyed and further reinforces the social order. Thus, Kesey resolves this complication by inspiring us to be neither a rebel nor a follower, but convinces us throughout the text to take a third option in being a spectator that learns from the mistakes made by others in order to truly escape the repressing order of society. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Because of this Kesey warns us about the consequences of rebellion through the emphasis on the symbolic feature of the electroshock therapy table. This image of the table symbolises the consequences as well as the Nurse s power which is used to plant fear within individuals preventing them from stepping out of line and becoming disobedient to the system. As a consequence to McMurphy s effort in teaching about the importance of individualism and the impudence of conformity, he was given several ruthless electric shocks. The ruthless, abusive treatments that are given to patients who opposes the system, portrays the tactics used by the authorities as a way of maintaining this social order. Thus we are informed about the harsh consequences of disobedience. Additionally, Kesey also takes advantage over the diction combine . Chief mentions how the Combine which is a huge organisation that aims to adjust the Outside as well as she has the Inside , the diction fully represents the idea of a mechanical force on society that represses individuals, manipulating and controlling their movement. The significance of the combine which is a machine that harvests wheat, symbolises the mechanical nature of the hospital and the way in which individuals are cut down and controlled. McMurphy who embodies spontaneity, individuality and freedom opposed too big of a threat to the system and thus through the authority of the combine was eventually lobotomised. Concurrently this idea of rebels being stood down is once again proposed when the nurse states how the patients are all under the jurisdiction and control of hers, this example shows the dominance and control she has on the patients and the way she waits on the sidelines with a needle expresses the violence and power used to suppress rebels from opposing the system that ...
