The Rise of Earthquakes in Oklahoma Essay
The Rise of Earthquakes in Oklahoma With earthquakes on the rise, we must figure out the cause of
them and determine a solution to help limit or even prevent them from occurring. Since early 2009,
earthquakes have been sweeping across the state of Oklahoma, causing many people to worry about
their own well being. Many scientists speculate the source of the earthquakes might be a result of
Hydraulic Fracturing deep down in Earths crust. Hydraulic fracturing is a process in which oil and
natural gas companies pump up to millions of gallons of wastewater, sand, and chemicals down drilled
holes in order to release pockets of shale within the earth. This use of technology is in question of the
potential cause or inducement of earthquakes in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Areas that have become a prime source for these quakes are being heavily surveyed for signs of
structural damage along with potential changes and repairs by home inspectors. Seismologists have
recorded that most Oklahoma earthquakes generally strike within the 2.5 3.0 magnitude on average.
While some have been recorded to spike up much higher which could potentially cause structural
damage to homes. Earthquakes of large magnitude have the potential to create large scale destruction
to homes, which do not meet building code requirements for earthquakes of this magnitude. It has
implications for calculated risks of seismic hazard, and it will have an economic impact on the state if
people have to start building to more stringent design standards (Brus). Many scientists from around
the country believe there may be links to the earthquakes for hydraulic fracturing, also known as
fracking. Hydraulic fracturing is a process in which millions of gallons of wastewater are pumped
deep down in the earths crust to break down rock releasing pockets of shale. This process is very
important to the oil industry. It is our leading method of obtaining oil and natural gas from the earth.
America has a very poor image when it comes to the oil industry. This process allows us to obtain and
become more sufficient in our pursuit for oil and natural gas. The U.S Geological Survey and OGS

Year Round School Advantages
The children that watch a lot of Tvs have lower grades, don t read as much and could have health
problems. In the summer they watch TV and don t get exercise. If you go to year round school you
won t have much time to watch TV. Year round schooling is positive because it gives students more
frequent breaks to relax, it improves test scores, and there is no summer school.
Year round schooling is unlike regular schooling in many good and bad ways. An example is how
schooling year round will save time in school and outside of school. Due to the shorter summers
schooling year round would make you have more frequent breaks and gives you time to shift their way
of thinking from less active to sharp learning models! Sence schooling year round would not have a
long summer break the smaller more frequent breaks would make sure the children would not get ...

Some ways they help the school is some schools use a multi track system which the school is divided
into four tracks then 3 out of 4 tracks could be in school while the other track could be on vacation and
they switch out. The multi track system helps overcrowded schools and stress of having too many
students. Another thing that helps the schools is portable room dividers that also helps to solve
overcrowding. The room dividers create more flexible space and it quickly changes the look and use
of any given space at any time. Finally the last way to help the school is to help the achievement gap.
The dropout ratings of schooling year round are 2% but the dropout rate of minority school is 5%!
Schooling year round has lower dropout ratings because they have less time to adjust to being off of
school.
Schooling year round keeps kids on task, help retain information better and even if you don t get time
to work in the summer with minimum wage jobs, schooling year round makes high school graduates
earn about $11,000 more per year than minority

Our Time Here at Berks
Our team here at Berks has experienced much over the past 2 1/2 years, carrying the unofficial mantra,
TOC: Take on Change. We ve built and moved into a new facility, been awarded a new staffing
contract, seen people come and go, and transitioned over to an electronic health record. It prides me
that we have been a model for growth and development. Many of you exemplify positive values that I
believe make our work worthwhile. During our time together, I have advocated on your behalf and
made decisions with focus toward what is best for our future and for this agency. We all recognize that
change comes at a cost and that at each crossroad we have the opportunity to determine which road to
follow. We can accept challenges, making them work to our benefit, or we can resist progress. For me
personally, and as you probably have seen, I choose not to be held hostage by those who thwart efforts
to maintain a positive and rewarding work environment. This said I also do my best to give others the
benefit of the doubt, with hopes that others do the same in return. I have done this for many of you
regardless of opinions or differing views and suggestions. Some of you can vouch for this as it has
been at the expense of your own frustration. I ve spoken with each of you on numerous occasions
about toxic effects of gossip and rumors. Previous administrators have done the same, even to the
point of sending official documentation. I have also spoken with some of you about your gifts

Advantage And Disadvantage Of Rectenna
Today s world scenario there is an necessity for an alternative energy source which replaces the on
hand source of energy. These include rectenna s, solar cells, harvesting human energy and wind power.
A new imminent rectenna system design incarnates an antenna, a Schottky diode, a matching circuit
and a DC filter. The harmonics rejection of the antenna is primarily used to reduce the rectenna size.
The filter implemention provides the various advantages in the antenna structure such as Miniature of
rectenna size, hence its become suitable for several applications where the size and weight are well
thought out as critical aspects. There is maximum energy conversion efficiency in this configuration
when compared to the conventional type design. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Reasons For Gun Control
Gun control is one of the most important issues debated worldwide, but most importantly in the
United States. According to the Second Amendment in the Constitution, the citizens have the right to
bear arms, yet this has become an issue that has remained debatable for decades in congress meetings.
A recent event that dealt with gun control regulation is the Sandy Hook Shooting where the tragic
massacre in Newton, Conn. killed twenty children and eight adults including himself. I argue this
event, because it gave me prove for the need for more gun control.
I m for gun control, and the main reason weapon control should be in existence is, because on account
of without law saying something else, a firearm can be in anybody s hands. On the off ... Show more

In addition, it is dangerous for just anyone to have a gun, it is moreover loaded with risk for everyone
(arranged or not) to walk around, equipped, at all conditions. There have been serious incidents where
firearms were unexpectedly terminated, yet at the same time brought on a major issue when they did.
In a current review they have found that, instead of being utilized for self protection, firearms in the
house are 22 times more prone to be required in incidental shootings, manslaughters, or suicide
endeavors. The best claim that people who are unfriendly to gun control have is that it is taking
without end their rights to remain fight prepared as a part of the second change. (against gun control.)
A mistake that was made when the Second Amendment was made is that they gave people the right to
buy a gun without a single background check.
Taking everything into account, weapon control is vital for an ensured put for all. Without firearm
control, a weapon can get in the wrong hands. Also without foundation and medical checks, somebody
with mental issues can get a weapon. In general, having it too were for the most part anybody can get

How Does Shaving Really Work
Does shaving really make hair grow back thicker?
A lot of people believe that they could have thicker hair after shaving but what if we apply this
concept on peoplewho see their doctor to get thicker hair? Scientifically it does not soundreasonable
because hair growth and density is subjected to various factors such as genetic, biological and
geographical factor and many more. Hair growth and thickness is determined by some specific cells
below the surface of the outermost layer of skin, called hair follicle. Hair follicle regulates hair
growth, colour, density as well as thickness. So if you say that some products may grow your hair
thicker by boosting your hair follicles that makes sense.

Book review of All the Presidents Men
All The President s Men written by Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein set at the break in of the
Watergate building and priced at fifteen dollars copy righted in 1974 and published by Simon Schuster
tells the story of the Watergate scandal. It all started with the break in at the Democratic headquarters;
however it proves to lead to something even more complex. This story tells how two reporters worked
together and connected the dots to uncover a scandal that reached the highest government officials.
On June 17, 1972, a reporter name Woodward who worked for the Washington Post was asked to
cover a story. There had been a break in at the Watergate hotel. When Woodward got to the newsroom,
he found that this was not an ordinary break in, and he would not be the only reporter reporting on this
break in. The burglars had broken into the headquarters of the Democratic national committee in the
Watergate office apartment hotel building. Bernstein the other reporter had the same assignment as
Woodward. The two reporters had no pleasure for each other s company.
As the trails continued for the men who had committed the break in, Woodward started to realize that
there might be more to this story than meets the eye. Bernstein did some research of his own and ...

Essay on Frederick Douglas
Paper on Frederick Douglass
In the 1800 s, slavery was a predominant issue in the United States, one that most Americans in the
South dealt with daily. The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass reveals much about American
history during the time of slavery as well as expounds arguments for the abolition of slavery. As a
historical document, it conveys information about the slave family, work, the master slave
relationship, and the treatment and living conditions of slaves. As an antislavery tract, it argues against
commonly held beliefs about slavery s benefits and its morality, making strong points for getting rid of
slavery. In The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, Douglass reveals, through the story he

As these examples show, any member of a family could at any time be separated from any other
member. Controlling the family in this way, slaveholders took away the potential strength that the
slaves could have had if they were allowed to have strong, lasting family bonds. Frederick Douglass
narrative reveals a lot about the work of the slaves. Some few slaves worked in the master s house,
some more worked in the master s production huts around the farm, but most of them worked in the
field under the watch of an overseer with a whip ready in hand. The slaves would be punished,
sometimes very severely, if they weren t working early in the morning. They could also be punished if
they didn t work fast enough or well enough. After a long day of work, they would have to go to their
huts and do their own cooking and washing. They could only sleep a few hours a night after doing all
the work they had to do. When they were finished with their work they would fall down on their beds
and sleep till they [were] summoned to the field by the driver s horn. (48) Looking at the slaves as
property, the master wanted to use them as much as he could to get his money s value. He didn t think
of them as human beings who had needs, but as machines

Whole Foods Market Overview
Whole Foods Market Background Whole Foods Market is an American based retail chain grocery
store. They strictly sell both natural and organic food, offering a variety of products. Natural refers to
food that is free of growth hormones or antibiotics, while certified organic food must meet the
standards of the US Department of Agriculture (USDA). Whole Foods Market is the leading retailer in
the natural and organic foods, with 193 stores in 31 states, Canada, and the United Kingdom. With
Whole Foods Market being the first retailer in the business, they never really had to worry about
competition. However, with the trends changing and people wanting to eat healthier and have healthier
lifestyles, the popularity of the natural and organic products have increased. This means that Whole
Foods Market s competition is growing because different stores are catering to the consumers wants.
So, since Whole Foods Market is the leading market retailer, how are they going to continue to grow
in an increasingly competitive market? This question can be simply answered: they will be able to
continue to grow because of their strategic plan.
Combating an Increasing Competitive Market A strategic plan will basically layout the goals and the
general direction of what the company wants to accomplish. A great way to analyze a strategic plan is
a strategic audit. A strategic audit is a checklist of questions about a certain aspect of the company or
issue that triggers a deeper analysis

Characters Of Scout By Kill A Mockingbird
Courage has the capability of meaning different things to different people. It is usually divided into
physical and mental courage and it has the potential to help people through tough situations.
Throughout To Kill a Mockingbird, both physical and mental courage are shown from many of the
main characters. This courage leads them to making important decisions that impact the outcome of
the novel. Scout, Arthur Radley and Atticus all show an exceptional amount of bravery both internally
and externally and these characteristics can show the reader who these characters truly are.

Research Paper On Insanity Defense
Honesty is the best policy, but insanity is a better defense. Steve Landesberg. Insanity Defense is an
excuse used in court that is arguing that the defendant who committed the crime is not guilty due to
their battle with mental illness, such as severe Depression, Anxiety, Bipolar disorder, Dementia,
Schizophrenia, and much more. Insanity Defense should be authorized to all fifty states because the
mentally ill cannot control their mind, they are not obtained from prison, but they are hospitalized and
given treatment, and there is a low chance of the defendant winning the case.

Four States do not allow Insanity Defense, such as Kansas, Montana, Idaho and Utah. Some of the
jury will not believe that the defendant is truly insane, but just an excuse to dodge prison. Juries find
only about 20 percent of the defendants who plead insanity . It is a very small amount compared to
thousands of cases that they court hear every year. Many states use The M Naghten Rule states that the
Defendant either did not understand what he or she did, or failed to distinguish right from wrong,
because of a disease of mind . A common misconception of the insanity defense is that it is a get out of
jail free card. In reality, The defense is used only about 1% of the time in felony cases and the
acquittal rate is only 26% . Numerous tests are in place to determine the validity of an insanity defense
(M Naghten rule, Irresistible Impulse test, and Model Penal Code, etc) so it is extremely difficult to
fake insanity. The insanity defense is a way to provide help to those who need it; it is unfair to
compare those suffering from mental illness to those who are not. And even if the defense is used, it
does not mean it will be found true by the court and

Sigmund Freud, Psychoanalysis and the impact on 20th Century Ego Psychology
Meghan Laubengeyer

Psychologist, psychoanalyst, doctor of medicine, and author, Sigmund Freud s contributions to the
world of science and psychology were far from limited. The self and widely regarded scientist was
born in Friedberg in 1856 where he lived before moving to Vienna, Germany, where he would later
produce founding revelations at the birth of psychology as a science. From his beginnings, Freud
focused on psychopathology and the conscious mind (Jones, 1949). The renowned Father of
Psychoanalysis created a pathway and a foundation for psychology, influencing the world of
psychology from its birth to modern day practice. Freud s delve into the unconscious, dreams,
psychosexual development, and the id, ego, and super ego, are just a limited number of his studies that
greatly influenced numerous psychologists and theories of modern psychology. One of his earliest
practices and most accredited work dealt with psychoanalysis specifically. Though this practice is
seldom used in modern psychology in the treatment of psychological disorders, it assuredly carried
great influence in the development of modern practices of psychological theories. Freud s creation of
psychoanalysis exceeded his professional career, influencing modern psychologists and theories, one
specifically being ego psychology, that was founded in the mid 20th century of modern

Hannibal and the Second Punic War
Hannibal Barca, lived around 247 182 B.C. As the son of Hamlicar Barca, the general of the Carthage

Hannibal was considered to be one of the world s greatest military strategists. This great strategist at

Even with his fast cavalry and strong infantry Hannibal knew that he did not have resources like
Rome. In fact, he was always outnumbered in every battle. Yet despite of being outnumbered, his
strategies helped the Carthaginians win most of the battles in the second Punic war. For example, in
the battle of Lake Trasimene, Hannibal trapped the Romans in an ambush without an escape route.
What he did was to draw the Romans in close ranks, then sneak attack them with his infantry, and
block the way out with his fast cavalry. This lead to the death of 30,000 Roman soldiers plus a high
ranking Roman general named Flaminius. In this battle, the casualties of Hannibal s forces were only
2,500 soldiers.
Another battle that shows the great military mind of Hannibal was at Cannae. At this particular battle
Hannibal, used his great military cleverness to split up the Roman forces. By doing so he attacked
them from many different angles. This strategy called for another stunning victory for Hannibal. As a
matter of fact, his forces killed as many as 44,000 Roman soldiers. These events are some of the
reasons that made Hannibal one of the greatest military minds of all

There Are Many Types Of Ways Teachers Can Assess Students
There are many types of ways teachers can assess students knowledge. A formative assessment is one
of these types. A formative assessment takes place either during the lesson or before, as a pretest.
Formative assessments are used to see where students learning is at along the way. A benefit of
formative testing is that teachers can see what they should improve on in their lessons to help students
learn the content. A drawback is that formative assessments could be seen as busy work if they are not
created with students learning in mind. Another type of assessment is a summative assessment. These
assessments take place at the end of a lesson and cover a range of standards learned throughout a unit.

normal distribution is a bell curve. This is where many scores fall in the middle and fewer fall towards

last concept mentioned is grade equivalent scores. These scores show the average of how people of a

average, your grade level score will be higher than the grade level you are in. This is a topic to be

The President Of The Florida Chapter Of Delta Chi Here At...
To the founders of Phi Beta Kappa, My name is Jacob Dube and I currently serve as the President of
the Florida Chapter of Delta Chi here at the University of Florida. In 1776, you all made a decision
that would forever change the course of college history at the College of William and Mary and many
other universities nationwide as you created the first American collegiate fraternity. I cannot express
my gratitude for you as you all paved the way for the Greek system in a college and university setting.
The Greek experience is one of a kind to all of its members, and it has helped produce some of the
most successful people in our country. I would like to share to you some great news about today s
Greek systems here at the University of Florida and how you helped shape the success of so many
Greek students.
The Greek communities that have risen across the country have created huge impacts on every
university that they have established themselves on. Historically, fraternities were designed for
students to discreetly meet to discuss issues and host debates that their members believed would be
deemed inappropriate by their collegiate faculties. Since their founding, fraternities and sororities have
completely revamped their focuses. They are used as social, professional, and honorary organizations

Biblical Allusions In Cormac Mccarthy s All The Pretty Horses
Countless novels contain allusions to outside references in order to convey a deeper meaning and
understanding of a topic or idea. Allusions enhance the experience for the reader, allowing him to
delve into the authors mind and fully understand the intended message. In All the Pretty, Cormac
McCarthy subtly laces the plot with biblical references to enhance the plot and give the reader a more
meaningful understanding of the novel s events.
A prominent biblical reference in All the Pretty Horses is Don Hector, the betrayer. When the reader
first meets Don Hector, he seems a nice enough man. He gives John Grady and Rawlins jobs on the
ranch, compliments John Grady on his knowledge of horses, and allows him to tame the horses of his
choice; he becomes almost like a friend to John Grady. Upon hearing of John ... Show more content

A central idea is life which is often represented as blood. Early in the book, John Grady describes his
love for horses in a simple sentence, What he loved in horses was what he loved in men, the blood and
the heat of the blood that ran them. (McCarthy 7). In the bible, blood is a major idea. At the last
supper, Jesus gives his blood in a cup to all of his disciples. It represents life, spirit, and soul. John
Grady s connection to the horses is representative of this. The blood and sweat he shares with Redbo
on his journey, the connection he feels with his horse. John Grady is shown to be the Jesus figure in
the novel through the blood allusion. He is firmly devoted to others, selflessly helping the people and
animals around him over himself. John is also firmly devoted to his beliefs in god. When their journey
gets tough, Rawlins asks him about his faith, You think God looks out for people? said Rawlins. Yeah.
I guess he does. You? (McCarthy 92). John Grady stays loyal to his faith, in a similar way to Jesus in

1984 Totalitarianism Essay
George Orwell wrote and published the novel 1984 after World War I and II. These two main wars
gave Orwell a good look at fascist states, totalitarian governments and the destruction that this state
can create in a country. The main goal of the novel 1984 by George Orwell is to show that totalitarian
governments is not the best type of government because it limits freedom and individuality in its
citizens. The main goal of writing the novel 1984 was to warn the future generations of the dangers of
totalitarian states and the threats it poses to society. George Orwell wanted to warn others of
totalitarianism and the dangers that come with it because he went through both of the World Wars and
saw what would happen to society if enemy forces took over. Orwell had socialist views and those
opinions were portrayed thought out his novels (Philips, 77). He believed that there should be

The leader of Oceania is referred to as Big Brother. Big Brother is an intimidating face of the Party
who the citizens view as someone they can trust and respect. However if they disobey the rules set in

think freely, love or show emotions to other, and to speak freely. The main character Winston Smith
fights back against the fascist state by keeping a diary in order to regain some of his freedoms.
Winston purses a relationship with Julia and writes in a diary which go against the government s laws.
The relationship with Julia is against the law because the citizens of Oceania are not suppose to show

Why Did America Win The Revolutionary War
Those who expect to reap the blessings of freedom must, like men, undergo the fatigue of supporting
it. (Tom Paine) The Revolutionary War is arguably one of the most pivotal wars in the history of the
United States. Not only did America win the battle, but she also gained her freedom. America had
every reason to lose the war. They weren t trained properly, the British had a stronger army and navy
and they had more money. America won this war because they won the battles that needed to be won.
The Battle of Bunker Hill took place June 17, 1775 in Charlestown, Massachusetts. This battle was
one of many fought between the Americans and the British during the Revolutionary War. Although
the British won this battle it set the tone for how the war was going to be. ... Show more content on

For instance on June 6, 1778 the French signed two treaties with America. One of the treaties stated
that the French were now allied with America and would join the war with them. One of the French

by drilling continental army, bringing order to the camp, and he taught the soldiers about hygiene.
Benedict Arnold, and George Washington were also a major key in the victories of the war. Benedict
Arnold may have been a trader to the American people , and his fellow troops, but he also played a
huge role in the Battle of Saratoga, a major win in the Revolutionary War and turned the tide of the
war. He lead the Green Mountain men and stoped General Burgoyne and his men from gaining control
of Albany. George Washington can be considered the anchor that brought this long and drawn out war

The Machiavelli And Machiavelli s The Prince
I have always found great interest in the infamous Niccolo Machiavelli and his ways of thinking; my
eye was drawn to him long before I knew I would be studying at Colorado State and even before I had
any interest in politics. It was from young man know as Tupac Shakur, and let me tell you it is great to
finally understand who Machiavelli is and the things he has done for the outlook on politics after
hearing about how much respect and praise he got from the iconic rapper of the 1990s. In this paper I
will be analyzing and contrasting Thomas More s Utopia and Machiavelli s The Prince and their ideas
on subjects that include good governance and social orders, key reforms, and who should be held
responsible for providing good governance and an orderly society.
First let us discuss the ideas of Niccolo Machiavelli in is piece The Prince . Machiavelli has a very
independent controversial way of thinking and portraying his ideal form of governance in this text.
The ideal and most effective from of governance for him is not in that of a republic but instead he
insists in an autocratic regime. He argues that republics and other forms of government are too weak
because of the corruptness of human nature. This book is written as a guide on how a prince should
run his state or nation based on how and when he would come into this power. One of his main
concerns in which he has been criticized for is his disregard to follow moral values so as to properly
run the state, as well as

Student Loan Debt And High Cost Of Education
AMERICAN INNOVATION, TOO EXPENSIVE TO EARN Although millions of college students
graduate each year, many of them are not successful after their education. Many jump in without
knowing what they want to do and at the end once they have their degree they realize that it wasn t
what they wanted. Now they have thousands of dollars in debt and a degree they dislike or a degree so
common it earns them but a dollar or two more than a high school diploma would. Some can t even
find job, yet they have the burden to pay back student loans, but what if we as students did not have
the burden of debt? Would that make a difference? Could pursing a second degree be more feasible
without the burden of expanding your debt? Student loan debt and high cost of education has become
a huge issue in this country, they are deterring individuals from pursuing a degree, at times prolongs
their education time frame and more often than not we are left with a huge debt to pay. I believe this
deterrent is gradually affecting the number of innovators in our country. How can we fix this?
With interest rates as high as 9.37% through SallieMae one of the leaders in financing education,
student loan debt has become a big business at the expense of the American people that want to better
themselves. The national student loan debt surpassed 1 trillion dollars with the average individual debt
being thirty thousand dollars. It is obvious why giving an education is more a business than a service.

Comparing Three Chaplin Movies Essay
After seeing three Chaplin films at this point in chronological order it is not hard to notice the extreme
difference from the film City Lights to Chaplin s earlier films Mabel s Predicament and The Pawnshop
. In terms of cinematography it is real easy to see the differences in these films. To begin the
cinematography is different in that in the first two films most of the shots are wide shots and with very
minimal cuts. Also the lengths of the first two films are very short Mabel s Predicament is only 11
minutes long and The Pawnshop is 29 minutes long. The lack of cuts and the shorter runtime of the
films indicate already it is of a shorter budget because the films were limited in terms of how much
they could film. When comparing City Lights it actually is shot like a feature film you don t have a lot

Misogynistic Social Roles In Jane Austen s Pride And...
The novel Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen depicts the endeavours of two sisters finding lovers in
the late 18th century. Austen s novel takes place during the turning of the 19th century in Regency
England, an age in which societal status is of the utmost importance and each individual is ranked
based on their family name, wealth, and education. This common ideal of the time period is
detrimental to the livelihood of the sisters and the probability of them marrying the men that they truly
love. The novel portrays this common prejudice among the social classes, specifically when Mrs
Bennet insists that her daughter marry a man in order to keep their estate, Mr. Darcy s initial dismissal
of Elizabeth due to her class, and Miss Bingley s manipulation of her brother in order to maintain their
families immaculate reputation. The Bennet household consists of Mr. Bennet, Mrs. Bennet, and their
five daughters. As the story begins to unfold, it is revealed that Mr. Bennet s property is entailed,
meaning that when he passes, nothing of his will be left to his wife or daughters, but will be directly
inherited by the closest male relative. In revealing this detail, Austen illustrates the misogynistic social
view of the time period which implies that only men should be held responsible for finances. Due to
this circumstance, Mrs. Bennet finds herself frantically searching for suitors for her daughters while
solely considering their wealth. In Jane s case, she is fortunate enough

Is It Better to Be a Human Dissatisfied Than a Pig Satisfied
Oak Trees versus Acorns: Which is better?
It has been argued for centuries now, that people do not grow their full human potential, largely
because they do not participate in a reasonably sophisticated refinement . John Stuart Mill, in his book
Utilitarianism, claims that It is better to be a human being dissatisfied than a pig satisfied [Mill JS:
1863]. This essay will show that the advantages of being a human dissatisfied are better than those of
a pig satisfied . But before this can be proven, we have to understand the metaphor that compares
humans to pigs.
Mill compares two types of people: people who prefer to be humans according to his definition, and
those that prefer to be pigs . As pigs would ‘eat up anything that ... Show more content on

Whatever kind of pleasure they prefer is the more worthy kind. Mill uses this concept to show that
knowledgeable, higher order beings prefer the intellectual pleasures:
Now it is an unquestionable fact that those who are equally acquainted with, and equally capable of
appreciating and enjoying both, do give a most marked preference to the manner of existence which
employs their higher faculties. Few human creatures would consent to be changed into any of the
lower animals, for the promise of the fullest allowance of a beast s pleasures; It is better to be a
human being dissatisfied than a pig satisfied; better to be a Socrates dissatisfied than a fool satisfied.
And if the fool, or the pig, is of a different opinion, it is because they know only their own side of the
question. The other party to the comparison knows both sides.[MillJS:1863]
Mill highlights that a, a fool or pig, can only have a different opinion because it knows only one side
of an issue. But a Socrates or human, knows both sides of an issue, and therefore can have a different
opinion based on valid justification which can only be achieved haven taken all aspects into regard.
Therefore Mill s argument is a good one because it logically argues that people who have experienced
both types of pleasures (intellectual

To control a vast territory the British copied the French system of recruiting natives to serve in the

the army. Most of the sepoy were either hindus or muslims who would not eat meat or consume pork

The cartridges were, however, were heavily greased with pork and beef fat (Streets). If the sepoys

Eaglette Schubert LLC. Stanley Root contacted the law firm, claiming that he was repeatedly passed

Tanglewood promotes diversity in the workplace, and all hiring and promotion are made on the basis

To analyze disparate impact, it requires to compare the availability of protected classes (the proportion
of the qualified and available workforce who are members of protected classes) to the utilization of
protected classes (the proportion of those employed who are members of protected classes) for each
job in the organization.
In the flow analysis presented, and the chart below, data from the organization s hiring practices and
applicant pool are used to compare how many individuals were hired from various groups in the
applicant pool.
Selection ratios and the 4/5 rule
This method to assess disparate impact is to compare the proportion of applicants who are hired from
several sources.
The rule states that if the organization s utilization rate of minority group is below fourth fifth (0.8) of
the utilization rate of a majority group, disparate impact may exist.
In our case, there are both external and internal applicants for the positions listed:
A. Store Associate:
a) We have only external candidates for this position. The applicant versus selection ratio is 20.87%
Whites, 21.90% Non Whites, and 22.73% African American. Comparing the minority selection ratio
to the majority selection ratio, more than 80.00% are hired, so there is no sign of disparate impact.
B. Shift Leader:
a) External hires: there is a percentage of 57.58% for Non White, and 69.67% for African American,
both below the 80.00% required by the

Death Of A Salesman Linda Loman Character Analysis
Striving for perfection is often futile and frustrating, as societal norms are ever changing. Such
frustration is evident in the actions of Linda Loman, from Death of a Salesman, who is a complicated
and seemingly invisible housewife who must deal with her husband s childlike behavior as he falls
deeper into his mental illness. Linda s devotion, care, and loyalty to Willy and her sons is not enough
as he still treats her terribly by emotionally abusing her and verbally dismissing her, and her sons
abandon her due to the resentment they harbor towards their father. Throughout her marriage to Willy,
she has glossed over reality, attempting to make her family look perfect, and now that she must
attempt to pull her family back together, she resorts ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As a submissive housewife, Linda has limited jurisdiction over her household as Willy is the primary
form of authority; however, Linda leverages her position as her sons pal and continually manipulates
them in attempts to force them to please their father and conform to societal ideals. As she criticizes
her son Happy, stating one a philandering bum (Miller 57), Linda attempts to reign both of her sons
dreams in through manipulation. Happy is the only son attempting to be successful by societal
standards, yet, she criticizes him. Hoping to instill the idea that he will never be good enough, Linda
expects more out of Happy than she does out of her son Biff, who is the true philandering bum . Biff
travels the country looking for work on ranches and steals for no other reason than because he wants
to; however, Linda manipulates Biff with the fate of his father. Linda states Biff, I swear to God! Biff,
his life is in your hands! (Miller 60), using the fate of her husband s life to manipulate her rogue son
into conforming to societal ideals and into joining the business world despite his wishes not to. Linda
expects her sons to cure Willy s mental illness through their own respective successes and does not
believe that Willy will ever be happy until her sons are successful in the business world. Through her
manipulation, Linda is nearly successful in reigning her sons back under her jurisdiction and

Word Choice And Imagery In The Minefield By Daniel Thiel
The Minefield, a poem by Daniel Thiel, portrays itself in an obscure yet abrupt manner in which a
hungry, fourteen year old boy, only looking for a head of lettuce, is blown up by a minefield. The
word choice and imagery in the poem consequently conveys the vision of the minefield explosion (by
the father) being unleashed through the acts of fury and violence towards his children. Word choice
conveys this vision through explicit yet traumatic experiences with the past explosion by referencing
how, only fourteen, innocent, hungry, and under good intention, was the friend blown up. For
example, on the first two lines of stanza three, Thiel depicts the scattered boy as someone who,
...carried them underneath his good intentions , /turned his head, looked back once, / and his body was
scattered across the field (Stanza 1, line 8 9). The word choice within these quotes makes the young
boy appear blameless given his traumatic fate. On the second stanza, the two lines may indicate that
the father is recalling a memory at a dinner table towards his children. Furthermore, the word choice
that compares the memory to anger displacement can be seen on the third stanza on lines 14 17 in
which the father gave the ...volume of his anger to his children, which resulted in the bruises, we
covered up with sleeves./ In the way, he threw anything against the wall... , such as a radio. Following
the line, Thiel then compares how his father threw a melon, having it open, like a head, which is a
direct reference to the father s past experience in regards to the explosion. Secondly, the word
Simic 2 choice following the previous line references how the kids of the distressed father are now
traumatized from the father s outbursts of violence and destruction, that anything might explode at any
time. Imagery for The Minefield, however, portrays a similar approach in relation to word choice.
Within the first stanza, when the ... friend ran a few lengths ahead, the imagery in that can relate to
how close yet distant the fourteen year old boy was in comparison to the others, ending in one tragedy.
On line 7, imagery can be clearly seen as the boy was compared to a ...wild rabbit across the grass,
indicating a race between the

showed good efficacy.
Another type of weight loss pills is gaining more popularity due to more safe and healthy effect
comparing with others fat blockers. Among prescription drugs it is Xenical, blocking fat by affecting
lipase enzymes responsible for fat absorption. It helped many people lose weight along with good
dieting regime, but it s side effects include abdomen discomfort, diarrhea, and the inability to absorb a
lot of important fat soluble vitamins and other nutrients.
Alli is a lighter version of Xenical with the same side effects and many medical professionals refuse to
ally themselves with Alli as best weight loss pill because of moderate efficacy combined with many
side effects.
Among natural fat blockers chitosan is widespread ingredient. There are many pills based on chitosan
claiming fat blocking effect, but scientific researches proved weak fat blocking capacities of chitosan.
As fat blocker, acting somewhat like Xenical but binding fats directly in the stomach, Proactol now is
a leading weight loss pill. It acts safely and helps lose weight steadily and prevent weight gain if we

Philippine Beer Industry
I. TITLE The Profitability of Beer Industry in the Philippines
II. Introduction Oligopoly refers to the market situation that would lie between pure competition and
monopoly. It is characterized by small group of firms that control the market for a certain product or
service. This gives these businesses huge influence over price and other aspects of the market. This
research focuses on the study about the two of the largest beer manufacturers in the Philippines ─San
Miguel Brewery and Asia Brewery─ that participate in an oligopoly within the beer industry. Beer is
the most consumed alcoholic beverage in the Philippines and amounts for a 70% share of the domestic

Daddy Silvia Plath Essay
Another poem where the writer remembers the father but in a slightly negative and brutal concept is
daddy by Silvia Plath. The speaker begins by saying that he does not do anymore, and that she feels
like she has been a foot living in a black shoe for thirty years , too timid to either breathe or sneeze .
She insists that she needed to kill him (she refers to him a Daddy ), but that he died before she had
time. She describes him as heavy, like a bag full of God, resembling a statue which could also
insinuate the burden he was to her life. She remembers how she at one time prayed for his return from
death, and gives a German declaration of misery. When she remembers Daddy, she thinks of him
standing at the blackboard, with a cleft chin

Porter s Five Forces Analysis
Value Innovation
We have all seen that despite recessions some companies grow in revenues and profits. Why is this so?
Until recently, the dominant theory applied to factors driving profitability of an industry was Porter s
Five Forces Model. As the name implies, the level of competitive intensity within an industry from
five specific sources determines attractiveness of an industry to potential entrants. Porter developed
Five Forces Analysis in response to SWOT analysis, a model he found too vague.
Porter s Five Forces include three forces from horizontal competition and two forces from vertical
competition: horizontally, the threat of substitute products or services, established rivals, and new
entrants; and vertically, two ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If your customers rely on you to provide a tool or service that can be easily substituted with that of
another tool or service provider, your market power is weakened.
Your Blue Ocean Strategy
Kim and Mauborgne argue that this approach limits companies to a fight over ever smaller slices of an
existing market and therefore revenues. This is especially true in economies with an aging population.
While these traditional competition based or Red Ocean Strategies are necessary, they are insufficient
to sustain high performance. They argued that companies need to go beyond competing, seizing new
profit and growth opportunities in previously unexplored ways they call Blue Oceans.
Competition based strategies, such as Porter s Five Forces assume that an industry s fundamental
structure is a given and firms are obliged to compete within existing constraints. To sustain their
position in the marketplace, companies sticking to a Red Ocean Strategy emphasize creating
competitive advantage over the competition, usually by observing what the competition does and
striving to do what it does, but better or offering a cloned product, but cheaper. Attaining a bigger
market share in this environment is a zero sum game; one company s gain is another s loss.
In an effort to explain why certain companies grew faster and were more profitable than comparable
companies in their sector Kim and Mauborgne advanced the concept of Value Innovation.

Persepolis By Marjane Satrapi
Writers use characters to represent their alienation from their cultural and social values. This is seen in
Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi who talks about her story of growing up in Iran during revolutions and
war time. In the novel, it s clearly seen that Marji doesn t belong to the society she lives in. In the first
chapter, The Veil , we can clearly notice with the first two panels that she is different. In a class photo,
she is sitting on the far left and we can t see her. This photo can be seen as symbolism. It symbolizes
the alienation of Marji from that religious society. It s also presented in a way that makes readers think
that she s not with them or doesn t want to be with them. This creates the idea of « this is me » and «
here are others ». First two panels are also effective to create a good setting for readers. It helps us to
have an idea of Marjane not being happy to be with others and is not happy at all to wear the ... Show

After the revolution that was sparked by a group of islamic fundamentalists, the people s support for
western ways of life had to be abandoned. That made Iran a more islamic country with a government
that reinforces the word and doctrine of Allah. This affected Marjane because she is a westernized
woman and grew up in a westernized environment. The context proves that Marjane felt alienated
from her culture and society because it s not where she belongs. This is proven in the chapter The
Socks , where Marjane organizes private parties in which she has fun with other women without
respecting the society and its restrictions. It also shows a juxtaposition between her behaviour in
public and and her behaviour in private. This shows that even if the society obligates her to act less
westernized, she continues to do whatever she likes but privately. This proves again the theme of
rebellion, she is a rebellious person since her

Letter For A Credit Card
Eshan De Silva
Professor Brady
English 113A
October 21, 2014
Dear Mr. Jonathon,
I have been working at a bank for over 3 months and the knowledge I ve gained is absolutely limitless.
Since you came to my bank and wasn t quite sure about applying for a credit card, and also because I
value you as a customer, I decided to write this letter hoping to change the way you think about credit
cards.
Did you know according to collegeparents.org , in 2009, over 84 percent of undergraduates had at
least own a credit card (collegeparents.org para4). And from that over 50 percent of students had 4 or
more credit cards (Ghahremani para4). Even though as you mentioned, having a credit card makes you
purchase items that are not needed, more importantly it will help you build your credit. And also when
it comes to buying a car or even renting a car or a hotel, purchasing a house, or even applying for a
student loan, the first factor they look for is your credit history. Some credit cards, such as cash back
or rewards card even give you a little extra money for using them, which is not bad to save some
money without even noticing. On the down side, a lot of people who get credit cards, end up spending
more money than their income. But then once they realized they have exceeded their limit, they blame
on the credit card and not to themselves for purchasing unwanted items. Without any further ado, let
me tell you what a credit score is. Credit score is how much the bank or any type of a

  • 2. The Rise of Earthquakes in Oklahoma Essay The Rise of Earthquakes in Oklahoma With earthquakes on the rise, we must figure out the cause of them and determine a solution to help limit or even prevent them from occurring. Since early 2009, earthquakes have been sweeping across the state of Oklahoma, causing many people to worry about their own well being. Many scientists speculate the source of the earthquakes might be a result of Hydraulic Fracturing deep down in Earths crust. Hydraulic fracturing is a process in which oil and natural gas companies pump up to millions of gallons of wastewater, sand, and chemicals down drilled holes in order to release pockets of shale within the earth. This use of technology is in question of the potential cause or inducement of earthquakes in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Areas that have become a prime source for these quakes are being heavily surveyed for signs of structural damage along with potential changes and repairs by home inspectors. Seismologists have recorded that most Oklahoma earthquakes generally strike within the 2.5 3.0 magnitude on average. While some have been recorded to spike up much higher which could potentially cause structural damage to homes. Earthquakes of large magnitude have the potential to create large scale destruction to homes, which do not meet building code requirements for earthquakes of this magnitude. (Tom Paine) The Revolutionary War is arguably one of the most pivotal wars in the history of the United States. Not only did America win the battle, but she also gained her freedom. America had every reason to lose the war. They weren t trained properly, the British had a stronger army and navy and they had more money. America won this war because they won the battles that needed to be won. The Battle of Bunker Hill took place June 17, 1775 in Charlestown, Massachusetts. It was from young man know as Tupac Shakur, and let me tell you it is great to finally understand who Machiavelli is and the things he has done for the outlook on politics after hearing about how much respect and praise he got from the iconic rapper of the 1990s. First let us discuss the ideas of Niccolo Machiavelli in is piece The Prince . Machiavelli has a very independent controversial way of thinking and portraying his ideal form of governance in this text. The ideal and most effective from of governance for him is not in that of a republic but instead he insists in an autocratic regime. He argues that republics and other forms of government are too weak because of the corruptness of human nature. Many jump in without knowing what they want to do and at the end once they have their degree they realize that it wasn t what they wanted. Now they have thousands of dollars in debt and a degree they dislike or a degree so common it earns them but a dollar or two more than a high school diploma would. Some can t even find job, yet they have the burden to pay back student loans, but what if we as students did not have the burden of debt? Would that make a difference? Could pursing a second degree be more feasible without the burden of expanding your debt? Student loan debt and high cost of education has become a huge issue in this country, they are deterring individuals from pursuing a degree, at times prolongs their education time frame and more often than not we are left with a huge debt to pay. I believe this deterrent is gradually affecting the number of innovators in our country. How can we fix this? • 33. Misogynistic Social Roles In Jane Austen s Pride And... The novel Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen depicts the endeavours of two sisters finding lovers in the late 18th century. Austen s novel takes place during the turning of the 19th century in Regency England, an age in which societal status is of the utmost importance and each individual is ranked based on their family name, wealth, and education. This common ideal of the time period is detrimental to the livelihood of the sisters and the probability of them marrying the men that they truly love. The novel portrays this common prejudice among the social classes, specifically when Mrs Bennet insists that her daughter marry a man in order to keep their estate, Mr. Darcy s initial dismissal of Elizabeth due to her class, and Miss Bingley s manipulation of her brother in order to maintain their families immaculate reputation. The Bennet household consists of Mr. Bennet, Mrs. Bennet, and their five daughters. As the story begins to unfold, it is revealed that Mr. Bennet s property is entailed, meaning that when he passes, nothing of his will be left to his wife or daughters, but will be directly inherited by the closest male relative. In revealing this detail, Austen illustrates the misogynistic social view of the time period which implies that only men should be held responsible for finances. Due to this circumstance, Mrs. Bennet finds herself frantically searching for suitors for her daughters while solely considering their wealth. In Jane s case, she is fortunate enough ... John Stuart Mill, in his book Utilitarianism, claims that It is better to be a human being dissatisfied than a pig satisfied [Mill JS: 1863]. This essay will show that the advantages of being a human dissatisfied are better than those of a pig satisfied . Mill uses this concept to show that knowledgeable, higher order beings prefer the intellectual pleasures: Now it is an unquestionable fact that those who are equally acquainted with, and equally capable of appreciating and enjoying both, do give a most marked preference to the manner of existence which employs their higher faculties. Few human creatures would consent to be changed into any of the lower animals, for the promise of the fullest allowance of a beast s pleasures; It is better to be a human being dissatisfied than a pig satisfied; better to be a Socrates dissatisfied than a fool satisfied. And if the fool, or the pig, is of a different opinion, it is because they know only their own side of the question. The other party to the comparison knows both sides.[MillJS:1863] Mill highlights that a, a fool or pig, can only have a different opinion because it knows only one side of an issue. But a Socrates or human, knows both sides of an issue, and therefore can have a different opinion based on valid justification which can only be achieved haven taken all aspects into regard. • 43. Word Choice And Imagery In The Minefield By Daniel Thiel The Minefield, a poem by Daniel Thiel, portrays itself in an obscure yet abrupt manner in which a hungry, fourteen year old boy, only looking for a head of lettuce, is blown up by a minefield. The word choice and imagery in the poem consequently conveys the vision of the minefield explosion (by the father) being unleashed through the acts of fury and violence towards his children. Word choice conveys this vision through explicit yet traumatic experiences with the past explosion by referencing how, only fourteen, innocent, hungry, and under good intention, was the friend blown up. For example, on the first two lines of stanza three, Thiel depicts the scattered boy as someone who, ...carried them underneath his good intentions , /turned his head, looked back once, / and his body was scattered across the field (Stanza 1, line 8 9). The word choice within these quotes makes the young boy appear blameless given his traumatic fate. On the second stanza, the two lines may indicate that the father is recalling a memory at a dinner table towards his children. Furthermore, the word choice that compares the memory to anger displacement can be seen on the third stanza on lines 14 17 in which the father gave the ...volume of his anger to his children, which resulted in the bruises, we covered up with sleeves./ In the way, he threw anything against the wall... , such as a radio. Following the line, Thiel then compares how his father threw a melon, having it open, like a head, which is a direct reference to the father s past experience in regards to the explosion. Secondly, the word Simic 2 choice following the previous line references how the kids of the distressed father are now traumatized from the father s outbursts of violence and destruction, that anything might explode at any time. Imagery for The Minefield, however, portrays a similar approach in relation to word choice. Within the first stanza, when the ... friend ran a few lengths ahead, the imagery in that can relate to how close yet distant the fourteen year old boy was in comparison to the others, ending in one tragedy. On line 7, imagery can be clearly seen as the boy was compared to a ...wild rabbit across the grass, indicating a race between the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 46. Daddy Silvia Plath Essay Another poem where the writer remembers the father but in a slightly negative and brutal concept is daddy by Silvia Plath. The speaker begins by saying that he does not do anymore, and that she feels like she has been a foot living in a black shoe for thirty years , too timid to either breathe or sneeze . She insists that she needed to kill him (she refers to him a Daddy ), but that he died before she had time. She describes him as heavy, like a bag full of God, resembling a statue which could also insinuate the burden he was to her life. She remembers how she at one time prayed for his return from death, and gives a German declaration of misery. When she remembers Daddy, she thinks of him standing at the blackboard, with a cleft chin ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 47. Porter s Five Forces Analysis Value Innovation We have all seen that despite recessions some companies grow in revenues and profits. Why is this so? Until recently, the dominant theory applied to factors driving profitability of an industry was Porter s Five Forces Model. As the name implies, the level of competitive intensity within an industry from five specific sources determines attractiveness of an industry to potential entrants. Porter developed Five Forces Analysis in response to SWOT analysis, a model he found too vague. Porter s Five Forces include three forces from horizontal competition and two forces from vertical competition: horizontally, the threat of substitute products or services, established rivals, and new entrants; and vertically, two ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If your customers rely on you to provide a tool or service that can be easily substituted with that of another tool or service provider, your market power is weakened. Your Blue Ocean Strategy Kim and Mauborgne argue that this approach limits companies to a fight over ever smaller slices of an existing market and therefore revenues. This is especially true in economies with an aging population. While these traditional competition based or Red Ocean Strategies are necessary, they are insufficient to sustain high performance. They argued that companies need to go beyond competing, seizing new profit and growth opportunities in previously unexplored ways they call Blue Oceans. Competition based strategies, such as Porter s Five Forces assume that an industry s fundamental structure is a given and firms are obliged to compete within existing constraints. To sustain their position in the marketplace, companies sticking to a Red Ocean Strategy emphasize creating competitive advantage over the competition, usually by observing what the competition does and striving to do what it does, but better or offering a cloned product, but cheaper. Attaining a bigger market share in this environment is a zero sum game; one company s gain is another s loss. In an effort to explain why certain companies grew faster and were more profitable than comparable companies in their sector Kim and Mauborgne advanced the concept of Value Innovation. • 49. Persepolis By Marjane Satrapi Writers use characters to represent their alienation from their cultural and social values. This is seen in Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi who talks about her story of growing up in Iran during revolutions and war time. In the novel, it s clearly seen that Marji doesn t belong to the society she lives in. In the first chapter, The Veil , we can clearly notice with the first two panels that she is different. In a class photo, she is sitting on the far left and we can t see her. This photo can be seen as symbolism. It symbolizes the alienation of Marji from that religious society. It s also presented in a way that makes readers think that she s not with them or doesn t want to be with them. This creates the idea of « this is me » and « here are others ». First two panels are also effective to create a good setting for readers. It helps us to have an idea of Marjane not being happy to be with others and is not happy at all to wear the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... After the revolution that was sparked by a group of islamic fundamentalists, the people s support for western ways of life had to be abandoned. That made Iran a more islamic country with a government that reinforces the word and doctrine of Allah. This affected Marjane because she is a westernized woman and grew up in a westernized environment. The context proves that Marjane felt alienated from her culture and society because it s not where she belongs. This is proven in the chapter The Socks , where Marjane organizes private parties in which she has fun with other women without respecting the society and its restrictions. It also shows a juxtaposition between her behaviour in public and and her behaviour in private. This shows that even if the society obligates her to act less westernized, she continues to do whatever she likes but privately. This proves again the theme of rebellion, she is a rebellious person since her ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 50. Letter For A Credit Card Eshan De Silva Professor Brady English 113A October 21, 2014 Dear Mr. Jonathon, I have been working at a bank for over 3 months and the knowledge I ve gained is absolutely limitless. Since you came to my bank and wasn t quite sure about applying for a credit card, and also because I value you as a customer, I decided to write this letter hoping to change the way you think about credit cards. Did you know according to collegeparents.org , in 2009, over 84 percent of undergraduates had at least own a credit card (collegeparents.org para4). And from that over 50 percent of students had 4 or more credit cards (Ghahremani para4). Even though as you mentioned, having a credit card makes you purchase items that are not needed, more importantly it will help you build your credit. And also when it comes to buying a car or even renting a car or a hotel, purchasing a house, or even applying for a student loan, the first factor they look for is your credit history. Some credit cards, such as cash back or rewards card even give you a little extra money for using them, which is not bad to save some money without even noticing. On the down side, a lot of people who get credit cards, end up spending more money than their income. But then once they realized they have exceeded their limit, they blame on the credit card and not to themselves for purchasing unwanted items. Without any further ado, let me tell you what a credit score is. Credit score is how much the bank or any type of a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
