quadrangle that functions as the heart of
the scheme, like the Finnish ‘piha’ or the
Indian ‘pol’.

Concept
Presented by A.R Abhay Kumar
The architects did
not oblige to
regionalistic styles,
instead adopted an
internationalist
approach called
‘nature-
architecture’,
practiced in arctic
countries with cold
winters and
landscape of snow
and ice.
Embassy of Finland, India
Concept
Presented by A.R Abhay Kumar
Design concept: Consideration to the wind modeled snow on
Finnish ice fields and Himalayan mountains.
The aerial images of Finnish archipelago, country’s sand
ridges of the glacial period.
Reflections of the concept: Peculiar, undulating roof
structure, folded concrete roof slab.

•Architectural style is primarily monumental with distorted geometry
governing the plan and elevation treatment.
•Sensuous style achieved.
•Organic style is predominant, if one understands the design process of
the architect.

Equipment centre and A/C plant
Presented by A.R Abhay Kumar
Construction & Design: Windows on the
street side are basically clerestory, but
on the interiors they run down till the
floor level.
Interior walls vary in construction.
Spaces are separated by fragile screen of
slat work, part wood and part glass.
Teak works are exposed for texture.
Air conditioning vents are concealed
beneath painted wooden soffits.
Embassy of Finland, India
Desi gn
Presented by A.R Abhay Kumar
The Finnish staff quarters are segregated from the Indian
ones through hedges. The Indians have a separated
entrance opening towards the back street.

Drawbacks: Though embassy of Finland is a joyful and sensuous
work, it has been the least energy conscious in its designs.
Teak has been used indiscriminately and whole quarries of sandstone have
been excavated for cladding purposes

Conclusion: In the words of
the Architect, “We need
another concept of creativity:
one that is less greedy for
power, that accepts the
peaceful co-existence of
nature, integrates our cultural
plurality, deepens it,
preserves the world’s cultural
past”.

Site: The plot area for all the nations is 180X80 mts, despite

The original embassy for the French republic has historical and
architectural significance. Hence, the embassy had to be
relocated in a new diplomatic enclave, 30 kilometers west of the
city of Muscat.

Climate: The climate offers incessant sunshine with little

Concept: Traditional motifs have been used all over in a regulatory
manner.
The courtyard, water, sun are key elements for forming the
composition.
The esoteric use of pergola to form a horizontal Mashrabiyya is
powerful and contemporary adaptation of traditional architectural
elements
French Embassy, Muscat, Oman.
Concept
Presented by A.R Abhay Kumar
Design: The structure is covered by giant pergola, supported
on 4.5X4.5 m analogous to the traditional Mashrabiyya.
The slope of the pergola is 3%.
French Embassy, Muscat, Oman.
Desi gn
Presented by A.R Abhay Kumar
The slope generates a sense of false perspective. 200 support
columns are placed at 90 deg to the Mashrabiyya. The pergola
visually links and unifies various functional units of the
building.
