E-mail is a method for exchanging digital messages primarily between humans. An email consists of content, an author's address, and one or more recipient addresses. Email systems operate over networks using a store-and-forward model where email servers accept, forward, deliver, or store messages on behalf of users, who only need to connect to send or retrieve messages. Rarely is email transmitted directly between users' devices. E-mail originated in 1965 as a way for users of time-sharing mainframe computers to communicate, and was quickly extended to allow passing messages between different computers by 1966.
