What Is Foundation?
1. It is the lowest part of
a structure below
ground level.
2. Has direct contact
with ground.
3. It provides a base for the
super-structure through
artificial arrangement of
concrete block, piles, raft etc.

Types Of Foundation
What Is Mat Foundation?
It’s a one continuous large
footing spread over the entire
construction area.
It’s a thick slab having many columns
which transfers loads coming through
the columns directly to the soil.
Mainly constructed at a depth of 1-20 feet
from ground level.
When foundation area cover
50-60% of the total plot area.
When Mat Is Required?
When the bearing capacity
of the soil is too low.
When basement is needed.

Construction Procedure
Mat Foundation is applied if bearing
capacity is too low.
Soil is tested for measuring the bearing
capacity.
Soil Test
Centering and Leveling
Land of site can be bumpy so leveling
takes place.
Centering provides accurate
height.
Shoring
Shore Piles are placed continuously
around the boundary of the
construction site.
Used to prevent the side soil from
collapsing.
Concrete, Timber and Steel piles are
used for shoring
The shore piles were
connected by tie beam.
After Shoring the soil is
excavated.
Soil Excavation
The soil wasn’t excavated
fully at once rather it was
done step wise for depth
basis bracing.
King Post is constructed.
Bracing
Ties and Struts are placed.
Further excavation was done if needed.
For Leveling the soil spade
or other tools are used
Leveling And Compaction
Soil is dressed with sand.
Sand is compacted by hammer.
First one layer of brick flat
soiling is placed over the area.
BFS & CC Layer
After that Cement concrete layer
of 3” thickness is provided.
After that Polythene is placed as
damp proof course.
After that another CC layer is provided.
CC blocks of Circular/Cubic shape of about
3” height are placed on the CC layer.
CC Block Placing
Blocks are provided to maintain clear cover at the bottom.
Reinforcements are placed over the CC blocks.

Important Factors
Reinforcement Joints
•Heavy steel wire used for binding
Retaining Wall
It’s one kind of RCC wall constructed around the mat foundation.
It is constructed to resist the lateral load of soil.
Shuttering
Shuttering is used to prevent the concrete falling out of
foundation area.
Steel plate, Wooden plate is used for shuttering purpose.
Casting
The process of pouring concrete in
the reinforcement mesh.
Casting was done in layers.
Compaction
Casting and Compacting was done simultaneously.
Vibrator machine was used for compacting
After casting the concrete, the
upper surface was leveled.
Leveling
Levelers were used for this
process.
Shutter is removed after the concrete
is set and hardened enough.
Removing Shutter & Curing
Curing is done for 28 days.
Water is sprayed on the surface for curing.
Advantages & Disadvantages Of Mat Foundation
Advantages:
 Reduces differential settlement.
 Ideal for poor ground condition.
 Provides more space.
 Provides basement.
Disadvantages:
 Cost is high as shore protection is needed.
 As the slab has greater thickness, heat may trap inside during
hydration reaction.
 Water may seep inside the basement.
 During construction water level may rise that might cause the lose
of contact with the soil.
Observations
 The whole Mat foundation wasn’t done at once.
 Wood plate in shuttering was broken due to lateral load of
concrete.
Casting was done at night to reduce time wastage.
