This paper will present preliminary findings from an ongoing multi-sited ethnography investigating religious education teachers’ use of online social spaces. Looking particularly at the construction of RE teachers’ professional identities, the study focuses on two primary online social spaces: the TES RE Forum and the NATRE Facebook Page. However, also included, as secondary ethnographic sites within this multi-sited framework, are users’ schools and homes as a means of analyzing the interaction between the online and offline domains. The methodological approach is open and inductive, utilizing multiple data sources. The primary methods include: participant observation and analysis of online interactions; in depth narrative based online and offline interviews; analysis of networks; elite interviews; and analysis of RE/ religious discourses in the media. Themes emerging from the fieldwork will be discussed in this paper. In particular, the neutrality of the online social spaces being studied will be questioned and the relationship between the agendas of parent companies and RE teachers’ online engagement and understandings of themselves and their subject will be explored. Additionally, Goffman’s image of ‘backstage’ in his framework of performance will be considered as having useful theoretical implications for an understanding of the place online social spaces play in RE teachers professional lives.

Session presented at a conference of the Academic and Research Libraries Division of the Minnesota Library Association. What is a MOOC, what is it like to take one, why are they important, and what do they have to do with libraries? This session will provide answers to these questions and give attendees a closer look through the presenter’s experience as a participant in seven different courses in 2012. Participants will be better prepared to discuss and make use of the opportunities and challenges these new learning communities present to our institutions. Come learn about the different kinds of MOOCs, how they can be used to learn new skills, how they implement and share open educational materials, and other topics to engage your colleagues and campus community in conversations about their future.

A paper written in 2011. The following proposal suggests a network analysis approach to study the effects of web communication on civic participation. A three-phase mixed methods research design is proposed to examine firstly, the effect of supplementary communication via the social networking site Facebook, on the structure (quantity) and content (quality) of social ties within a network of citizens engaged in health and social care policymaking. It is proposed that the network variables of tie structure and content are then tested in an affective capacity against the participatory attitudes and behaviour of networked individuals. By reframing the study of web use and civic participation under a network theoretical framework, the proposed study will add to the existing literature in the field through recognition of the mediative capacity of relational ties in the formation of participatory capital. It is suggested that it is through their effect on relational tie structure and content within citizen participation networks, that social networking sites such as Facebook affect participatory attitudes and behaviour. To set a critical context for the proposed study, a final qualitative phase of research is suggested to examine the professional power structures impacting upon participant expressions of agency.
