The past simple tense is used to describe actions that were completed in the past. It is formed by adding "-ed" to regular verbs like "work" and "listen" or changing the ending of verbs ending in "y" to "ied", like "study" becoming "studied". There are also irregular verbs that have unique past forms, such as "awake/awoke" and "break/broke". To make a sentence negative, "didn't" is used before the infinitive verb, and questions are formed by placing "did" before the subject and using the infinitive verb.

It`s used to express an action happened in the past.
Examples :

3. 1. We add (ed) to the regular verbs to make it in the past simple.
Example : work worked
listen listened
2. With verbs end with (y) and before it a consonant letter, we change
the (y) to (i) and add (ed) so the end of the verb will be (ied).
Example : study studied
marry married
3. Then we have irregular verbs we should know them carefully.
Example: awake ( awoke – awoke ) , break (broke – broken), lay (
laid – laid) , choose (chose – chosen) , make (made – made ).

4. Negation and Interrogative
We use didn’t then the verb in the infinitive ( didn’t + ).
Example:
They dusted the streets yesterday. They didn’t dust the streets
yesterday.
We put did before the subject , then the verb in the infinitive.
Example :
He signed the contract the previous day. Did he sign the contract
the previous day?
