past simple

the simple past is a verb tense that
is used to talk about things that happened.
Imagine someone asks what your brother
Alan did while he was in town last
weekend.
Example: Alan entered a hula hoop
contest.
Example: He won the silver medal.
Unlike the past continuous tense,
which is used to talk about past events
that happened over a period of time, the
simple past tense emphasizes that the
action is finished.
You can also use the simple past to
talk about a past state of being, such as
the way someone felt about something.
• Uses
• 1. The simple past is used to talk about a concrete action that began
and ended in the past. In this case it is equivalent to the indefinite
Spanish preterit. Generally, we use it with adverbs of time such as
"last year", "yesterday", "last night" ...
• .
Examples:
Tom stayed home last night. (Tom stayed home last
night.)
Kate worked last Saturday (Kate worked last
Saturday).
I did not go to the party yesterday. (I did not go to
the party yesterday).
Did you walk to school this morning? (Have you
walked to school this morning?)
2. The past simple is used for a series of actions in
the past.
Examples:
He studied for an hour in the
morning, worked all afternoon and
did not return home until 10 at
night
• Form
• To form the simple past with regular verbs, use the infinitive
and add the ending "-ed“ want → wanted. The form is the
same for all people (me, you, he, she, he, us, them).
. For verbs that end in an "e",
we only add "-d".
Examples:
change → changed
believe → I believed
Exceptions:
If the verb ends in a
short vowel and a
consonant (except "y" or
"w"), we double the final
consonant.
Examples:
stop → stopped
commit → committed
With verbs that end in
a consonant and a "y",
the "y" is changed to
an "i".
Examples:
study → studied
try → tried
• Examples:
• learn → learned
• stay → stayed
• walk → walked
• show → showed
