A project management information system (PMIS) can be a framework to guide the progress of a project and help to increase its success rate. It brings accurate and relevant information to management within the required time frame, and helps to speed up the decision-making process. Any action necessary to ensure that the project is on track in terms of time, budget and objectives.  PMIS helps for effective management of time, money and resources and as it enables team to track the status of each part of the project. Document control including its coding and movement is another vital area of PMIS.

2. Introduction
 PMIs is the system of acquiring, processing and use of information for
Project decision making, stakeholder management, and future knowledge.
 A project management information system (PMIS) is how information
needed to run a project is organized.
 It collects and uses project information through one or more software
applications.
 Project Management Information System (PMIS) is used by upper and
lower management to communicate with each other.

3. Definition
 The Project Management Book of Knowledge (PMBOK) states that
a PMIS is “an information system consisting of the tools and techniques
used to gather, integrate, and disseminate the outputs of project
management processes.
It is used to support all aspects of the project from initiating through
closing and can include both manual and automated systems.”
 According to Donald E. Forbes,
PMIS does is to manage all stakeholders in a project such as
the project owner, client, contractors, sub-contractors, in-house staff,
workers, managers etc.

4. Role of PMIS
 It is also used to create a specific schedule and define the scope
baseline.
 At the execution of the project management goals, the project
management team collects information into one database.
 The PMIS is used to compare the baseline with the actual
accomplishment of each activity, manage materials, collect financial
data, and keep a record for reporting purposes.
 During the close of the project, the PMIS is used to review the goals to
check if the tasks were accomplished.
 PMIS is also used to create a final report of the project close.
 PMIS includes Work Planned Vs Work Completed in a Gantt Chart
Diagram.

5. Importance of PMIS
 The acquired information is communicated verbally to the team members
or stored and distributed in multiple formats as reports.
 The Project Information processes help in generalizing the methods used
to collect relevant and accurate data that is further used to determine the
scope and the progress of the project.
 Managers at all levels of an organization rely on reports generated from
these systems.
 This system helps them evaluate their business daily activities or problem-
solving, decision-making, and track progress.
 An information system consisting of the tools and techniques used to

 Usually it is a part of MIS of the organization as it manages
Information needed from design to the develop stage( which is very
important for Planning and control )
 The project managers need to work with large volume of Information
thus, it helps for effective management of time.
 The flowed Information gradually becomes knowledge requiring
storage and easy access in the future for project managers which
could be possible by PMIS system.
