  • #4 Traditional view of eLearning – getting the lectures, library & exam into the computer.
  • #5 But, as well as learning in the library & from the lecturers, most students learn when talking to their friends in the bars & coffee shops.
  • #6 SO, now we have to get the bars & coffee shops into the model. So, we now have people reaching out across the computer.
  • #8 Great debate about what they actually are; do they exist, who is responsible for creating the term (generally seen as Tim O’Reilly) Two main aspects – the ideas of User Created Content – as compared to the more static readable information (also called “Read/write” web). Social Networking – an extension of ideas such as Newsgroups/ Mailists – but much more. How it is used – students have always done these things; but methods & size of audience changing rapidly. Organising personal work – much as students have always done. Prime audience = author. N.B. Backup issues – if material online. What is greater risk – online or the dog? Dissemination – again, what students have done before but changing audience (and potential for more control) Information gathering; but need to learn much greater filtering etc., skills. Group collaboration – should this be an extra category, or is it in fact a combination of dissemination & Information Gathering?
  • #10 The design of AI based tutoring programs represents a new paradigm for educational research. This paradigm involves a unique marriage of methods and goals from artificial inte11igence, psychology, traditional pedagogy, and computer science. Using Logo for teaching

  • #12 Wheeler’s view – many others have drawn diags; this is nice as doesn’t include tool names, and there are places where non-tech aspects can go.
  • #13 Knowledge building; should all know about it! Used Knowledge forum 2002-07 groups of MSc DL students.
  • #14 Current grads – graduation & also in the bar; inc. Glynn who’s not here.
  • #15 Developed in UK as “Learning landscape” – now more generic; offers blogging; groups (N.B. One of biggest Elgg installs is Ruckus – for rugby fans); tagging; links; file uploads & RSS to track them all. Initially used for blogging; then moved to using it with BSc students to develop research communities.

  • #19 Based on Rogers Diffusion of Innovation model. Got 183 responses from c. 847 academic staff; assume it’s not random – just those who were interested enough to fill it in.
  • #20 Have to be using it personally to use it with students.
