The individual is able to think, feel, strive, and work by himself; but he depends so much upon society -- in his physical, intellectual, and emotional existence -- that it is impossible to think of him, or to understand him, outside the framework of society. Conflicts can therefore be prevented, resolved, transformed, and transcended by identifying the boundaries that separate us and consensually crossing them, communicating across the internal and external borders we have erected to keep ourselves safe, overcoming the sources of opposition we have created within ourselves, and redesigning the systems and institutions we inhabit and turning conflict resolution values and principles into priorities.
