Editor's Notes

  • #3 Script:the main brief surrounding the project is the creation of a transmedial online expansion that will accompany Robyn Ravlich’s work. Her full length documentary that will be aired through Radio National’s “into the music” program will be accompanied by our online feature. The connection between sound and image is the key to this project as the website will be a visual way of expressing the Day of the Dead. Through our projects which will work on the website as additional material to the documentary are best placed in an online space as the projects are a combination of both sound, film and image. Through the use of multiple platforms of media the story of the day of the dead can expressed informatively.
  • #4 I believe that our project fits into the ABC charter as it will be both informative and entertaining. Using the subject matter of the Day Of The Dead and contributing to Robyn’s full length feature piece I think we can create an informed and exciting account of the festival. As well as adhering to the ABC charter as a group we need to make sure that have copyright permission for songs and sound effects used within our pieces. However in the case that these don’t get put online through the ABC the copyright laws need to be abided by so we can present the work on our own websites and online, separate to the ABC.
  • #5  In creating a basis for my own online proposal I have researched some other online projects that have worked in conjunction with radio documentary and audio features and have been very successful. I have chosen to use birdland as my first example which a show that aired on 360 documentaries on radio national. Whilst it is not an online feature as such I found most interesting the inclusion of not only a full length audio documentary but the incorporation of a picture slide show, with a beautiful soundscape. This is not dissimilar to what we are trying to achieve as we are hoping to blend not only documentary material but also image and sound. This was an example of a really beautiful piece that I think would be helpful in putting together our own online project.
  • #6 My second exmaple is from the SBS multimedia section, it is a feature called “How far weve come”. The website itself has a beautiful simple design and features a number of artworks which are linked to audio often soundscape formats. When the buttons are pressed to look at the images with the pressing also comes an audio grab of some sort of soundscape. The inclusion of the audio make the picturesbrighten up and creates more meaning. As you navigate around the homepage there is such an experience of different sounds that as the audience we are taken on a journey just through the use of soundscapes. I think these are ideas that can be used for our own piece, as it obvious that the connection between the sound and the image is so closely intertwined, and such an important way to tell a story. After clicking on an image down at the bottom tabs you are then linked to a page which focuses directly on one person, as the page loads you can hear there voice until it fades out and you are left with the option to click through and watch a film or read further text about that person’s story. There are so many different mediums involved in the creation of this website it brings the whole story to life. it covers a number of different stories about people from a range of different backgrounds. The use of the graphics surrounding the film icon within the website also helps to bring further light to each individuals stories. Something that could work in our project is each group having a photo which represents their own stories, so that while people are listening to audio they constantly have a visual image to remind them of the story, and bring it to life.
  • #9 My final example is “Immigration Nation” which is a website in its own right, however there is a tab within this which takes you through to the ‘interactive documentary’ this includes sound, image and video combined. The website itself is put together very nicely with a slide component that allows the viewer to see all the stories and imagery so they can choose there own path as they scroll through. While scrolling the viewer can hear a soundscape of many platforms, giving the listener an idea of what sort of stories and paths they can take depending on the people they choose to listen to.  As the viewer makes their way around the website you begin to see a number of different mediums emerge, from slideshows to audio to written articles. All these mediums work in conjunction together to paint a colourful picture of Australia as a multicultural country. The podcasts, films and slideshows all combined allow for an informed and interesting approach to documentary subject matter. I think it is a really interesting and intriguing way of making one subject expand and inform a large audience. In the case of this interactive website I believe that the same knowledge and information could have been achieved through one documentary film or radio piece. It needed the inclusion of all the mediums in an online enviroment to be successful and I think this is what we need to strive for in the creation of the Day of the Dead online expansion.
  • #12 Using elements from all of these sources found, I think that an interactive, multimedia website would be the best way to demonstrate the project. Using a combination of audio, slideshow, video footage I think we can create an appropriate representation of The Day Of the Dead. As I found with the SBS interactive websites I believe the online project would work best if it were used as a journey. Like the SBS works the viewer would have control of what “path” they would like to take and the journey was accompanied with soundscapes and imagery. If each group has one photo to represent there work, and that picture were a link to a whole website full of the work created by that particular group then it would be an assessable way for the audience to experience all the stories created. The viewer could click onto a certain image which would be linked to a soundscape and that would then take them through to the website which would be set up to represent that story and be have a separate design so it could best represent that particular story. The website would have a “home” button on all pages allowing the viewer to navigate home at any point during there exploration. The strength of the project will also be how coherently we can match all the stories together and enable our audience to go on a journey and ultimately experience what the festival really is.
